CLIMATE ACTION SHOWProduced by Vivien Langford17th March 2025D O N ' T   B U R N   OUR   F U T U R E“The PM's Climate Speech we've been waiting for” from the SLF 2025 Join climate activists Violet CoCo, David Spratt and Mark Carter to view and reflect on the speech — that we all want to hear. They ask the government to safeguard the wellbeing of all Australians by responding at emergency speed to an honest, evidence-based, risk-averse assessment of our climate predicament. The panellists will discuss what that response could actually look like, why it is now necessary, and how it can provide climate-concerned Australians — those now despairing at current, demonstrably ineffective, national climate policy and actions — with a future they can demand.Remember with an election coming up:Pick your battles, Don't go alone, The Time is Now! Music by  James Brook featuring Violet Coco "Peoples' uprisinghttps://jamesbrook.bandcamp.com/album/yandoitViolet Coco https://greenagenda.org.au/author/violet-coco HEADLINES showing CLIMATE ACTION WORLDWIDE Our energy bills are torching the planetMarch 04, 2025 by Extinction RebellionActivists from Extinction Rebellion North and Axe Drax staged a banner-burning action on the day that tree-burning power station Drax announced earnings of over one billion pounds in 2024. What would the world look like at 3-degrees Celsius of warming above pre-industrial levels? In his latest work, Collision Course: 3-degrees of warming & humanity's future, David Spratt explores the catastrophic implications of the planet we're heading towards as warming continues to accelerate. He argues we need to face up to realities of the crisis and have an honest discourse on risks and impacts already occuring. On the show this week, he joins us to discuss the significance of tipping points, and the systemic risks posed by climate change, and the non-linear, catastrophic impacts expected at 3-degrees. We also explore the dire implications for food security, agricultural yields, and social stability. David underscores the need for greater awareness and understanding of climate risks and the importance of leadership in tackling the climate crisis. Melbourne's David Spratt (pictured), who co-authored the prescient 2008 book, "Climate Code Red", has questioned the value of the 28th Conference of the Parties (COP) about to begin in the United Arab Emirates. David and a former international oil, gas and coal industry executive, chair of the Australian Coal Association and CEO of the Australian Institute of Company Directors, Ian Dunlop, wrote the Pearls and Irritations article, "COP-out: Why the petrostate-hosted climate talkfest will fail". The BBC reports in a story "COP28: UAE planned to use climate talks to make oil deals", and in a second story, "COP28 ‘moment of truth' for oil industry, says energy boss" casts additional doubt on why the petrostate is hosting this major climate action meeting. From The Washington Post it is "Why an oil kingdom is hosting the COP28 climate summit and other questions answered". New Scientist reports: "COP28: When is the climate summit and why is it being held in Dubai?". Aspect of how do we reclaim and respond appropriately in a real Climate Emergency - much like the one we are irrefutably in. [Support this channel and access episodes early by joining up on Patreon or Youtube] For those that are not familiar with Ecocide it has this simple definition: Ecocide means unlawful or wanton acts, committed with knowledge that there is a substantial likelihood of severe and either widespread or longterm damage to the environment, being caused by those acts. A law of Ecocide was first proposed by the late Polly Higgins and it is fantastic to see the progress the organisation is making in fulfilling its objectives. Outlawing environmental destruction is a critical part of how we as a species, reassess our relationship with nature, in the face of climate and ecological breakdown. The question on the minds of many is will the passion for action on climate change by Prince Charles vanish now that he is King Charles (pictured)? Stories discussing that issue can be found on The Conversation: "It would be appropriate for King Charles to remain strong on climate: Albanese" and SBS: "Will Charles as King mean an end to his climate change activism?" And it was a question posed several years ago by Melbourne climate researcher and activist, David Spratt, who was also co-author of "Climate Code Red", that lives with me today and was reinforced/underlined/confirmed while reading the new book from Australia National University climate scientist, Dr Joëlle Gergis - "Humanity's Moment: A climate scientists case for hope". Other climate links are: "Climate change is white colonisation of the atmosphere. It's time to tackle this entrenched racism"; "‘Untenable': even companies profiting from Australia's carbon market say the system must change"; "The climate crisis is real – but overusing terms like ‘crisis' and ‘emergency' comes with risk"; "Reasons for (cautious) optimism: the good news on the climate crisis". It was daring for the ABC. Geoff Thompson's Background Briefing is well worth a listen, though 3CR has been reporting on this movement for ages.  We are looking for social tipping points when the majority of people understand that direct action is needed.  Nature understands the tipping points of hot house gasses, the Antarctic Ice shelf just crumbles..... and you know the rest.PODCAST :  https://www.abc.net.au/radionational/programs/backgroundbriefing/inside-the-climate-activists-plan-to-shut-down-australia/101324992  In search of what climate action works, I quote from Erica Chernoweth's study on how Non Violent Action has more lasting effects than Violent revolution, especially if we all get behind it. Then I go to the Sydney Climate Rally of August 7th. The harsh new anti protest laws and imminent opening of new gas wells are upermost in our minds.Paddy Gibson talks about the hopes of the Gommeroi people that the new government will stop the Santos Gas project in the Pilliga. Yet Santos is attempting to overide their Native title to establish  850 gas wells in the Pilliga Forest.Paul Keating and Abigail Boyd voice the massive opposition from unions and civil society groups to the new police powers over protesters and Rilka speaks about how harshly they had been applied to Blockade Australia. Then we hear from David Spratt talking to Nick Breeze about climate risk. He says that the IPCC is giving policy makers the wrong message.   For him the only question is "What is the worst that can happen and what do we need to do to prevent it? Breaking news : Paul Gilding's comments on changing our focus from reducing emissions to slowing the RATE of warming by cancelling methane."Much of the climate debate and its central arguments were formed in the 1990s when we perceived we had decades to get things under control. The context has now dramatically changed. The 2020s already see unprecedented heatwaves, wildfires, floods, emerging food crises and related geopolitical conflict – and yet this process has just begun. Every fraction of a degree of warming now brings us closer to climate tipping points that if breached, could lead to a runaway process we cannot control. We are teetering on that edge. Therefore, we need to reset the debate to have a laser focus on the immediate rate of warming and everything that influences it.This will not be easy. History shows that most large-scale global change happens with many distributed actions. Rather than ‘death by a thousand cuts', it's more like ‘life by a thousand little victories.' Thus, most arguments about the merits of different possible actions on climate change, end up with the same conclusion – we need an ‘all of the above' strategy. We see no silver bullets or amazing heroes, just all of us, and all that we do.Sometimes, though very rarely, an idea comes along which is not like that. A single action that could literally change the course of history.I believe slashing methane emissions urgently, with large reductions this decade, is such an action. Methane is a climate weapon of mass destruction if we don't act, but a silver bullet if we do. It will not stop climate change - not even close - but it might buy us the time to do so. Success in rapid methane reduction could be the singular difference between achieving some level of messy but manageable global change vs the descent into chaos and economic collapse. However, we will only take this action if we shift our mindset and focus from the ‘level of emissions' to the ‘rate of warming'.It's a hard argument to make because of the deeply entrenched focus and momentum on emissions reduction – towards which all progress is then seen as additive. As a result, everyone agrees methane is important, but its singular power to change the path we are on is not yet recognised.Let me be very clear - my key argument is not ‘methane vs CO2', it is ‘warming vs emissions.' They're connected, but very different. And it's the difference that defines the importance. If we are to reduce the existential risk of runaway climate change, we must slow the 'rate of warming' in less than 10 years. Even drastic reductions in CO2 emissions - while essential and urgent for different reasons - will simply not get us there. Firstly, because CO2 warms the climate slowly (and thus cutting it reduces the rate of warming slowly) and secondly because cutting fossil fuel use also reduces the aerosol pollution which currently has a temporary ‘cooling' effect.Given all the above, we can see that slowing the ‘rate of warming' is our single most critical task and urgent methane reduction is the most viable way to achieve it.We must therefore throw everything at this task – including faster elimination of fossil fuels, especially gas, and a dramatic focus on food and agriculture, particularly livestock. And we must deliver this change in less than 10 years. It's a tall order. The good news is that, while not easy, it's completely doable. Everything we require is available - we just need to decide. As with fossil fuels, the incumbent players will argue it's complicated and difficult, bad for jobs and the economy, that ‘sure we need to change, just not so fast!'.They are completely wrong. The science is clear that the path we are on – unprecedented climate events, geopolitical chaos, food crises and the risk of runaway warming - is immeasurably and incomparably worse than anything we can do to slow it down.If you want to understand the detail behind this argument, I explored it all in a recent discussion paper at the University of Cambridge. It covers the emergency nature of the task, the actions available and the economic opportunities that result. In particular, I explain why a focus on food and agriculture – particularly livestock – should now be our priority task. This detail matters, but don't let it distract you from the simplicity of the idea. The path we are on today is accelerating climate change with the risk of runaway warming and global economic chaos. We can choose a different path, but only if we slash methane emissions to slow the rate of warming. The future may well be determined by our decision."~ Paul Gilding, 15 August 2022PDF:https://www.paulgilding.com/s/CC-emissions-v-warming-20220815-FINAL.pdfDiscussion paper:https://www.cisl.cam.ac.uk/resources/publications/methane-markets-and-food-how-climate-emergency-will-drive-urgent-focus Source:https://www.paulgilding.com/cockatoo-chronicles/shifting-focus-from-emissions-to-warming

Phillip Sutton (pictured) was one of Australia's busiest climate activists, but sadly he died in mid-June, robbing Australia, and the World, of one of its clearest and most far-reaching thinkers, when it came to understanding how we, that's the world community, could navigate a problem that going to test our resilience, tenacity, endurance, resourcefulness and within all those things, our ability to collaborate. Phillip played a key role in seeing the worldwide take-up of the climate emergency idea, working closely with Adrian Whitehead to see Melbourne's Darebin City Council become the first jurisdiction in the world to declare a climate emergency. Adrian now administers an organization known as CACE - Council and Community Action in the Climate Emergency. The Victorian Climate Action Network has its usual monthly meeting on Saturday, June 18, and Phillip was to share with the group his knowledge and understanding of geoengineering and along with that how we should care for others. However, friend and co-author of "Climate Code Red", David Spratt stepped in with an interview he had recorded earlier with Professor John Moore from the Arctic Centre at the University of Lapland. This week is energy week! Zeb and Kevin speak with climate change activist David Spratt about a lack of climate solutions worldwide since his co-authored publication Climate Code Red: the case for emergency action,14 years ago. They discuss:- the upcoming "non-climate climate election"; the irony of how climate issues have dominated federal leadership changes for the past several years and yet neither major party wants to talk climate policy.- recent carbon offset whistleblower Professor Andrew Macintosh, former chair of the Emissions Reduction Assurance Committee, to denounce the carbon market, with a report that 70~80% of carbon credits are "markedly low in integrity". - how the carbon market's degeneration into this rort of nonviable schemes (such as carbon capture and storage) trickles down to the collective conscience of consumers, whilst allowing companies to emit more in the name of money- how these corporations "should be paid to clean up the mess, but right now they're being paid to make the mess", with the last financial year showing fossil fuel subsidies equaling $19,600 each minute. Not only does this encourage more pollution, but also is a reflection of how much money the goverment has to spend.- the false panacea of the electric car with precious metal extraction required for batteries not quite the ethical or environmental solution under a system based on eternal economic growth- lack of forward thinking policy for Victorian Government approved developments when it comes to sea-level projections and more...David stresses that climate change is not a technological problem, but a problem of political will, since we are stuck with two major political parties with deep connections to the fossil fuel industry.

In this ClimateGenn special episode, I publishing my first interview with Dr Jim Hansen who was at the time Director of NASA's Goddard Institute for Space Studies. This was recorded in 2012 at the European Geophysical Union, the annual conference that takes place every year in Vienna. Please support at https://patreon.com/genncc or follow on https://genn.cc. In recent weeks I have exchanged emails again with Dr Hansen to discuss his recent work that has a working title of ‘The Big Climate Short'. Hopefully this will be recorded once his latest work is submitted for publication. What strikes me about this decade old interview is that the language is so clear and the warnings regarding urgent action are in the timeframe of the next 1-1.5years. He even states the danger of waiting a decade to what would be 2022. Hansen made international news in the late 80's when he testified to US Congress about the need to change our energy system and reduce atmospheric greenhouse gases. He is straight pragmatic speaker who has consistently issued warnings that have been ignored despite the rising cost inflicted by such ignorance. Here he gives very clear definitions of what tipping points are and the danger of crossing them. He discusses the challenges that scientists face in communicating these problems. He also highlights evidenced strategies that could have significantly dealt with them at the time but with each passing year create an ever growing challenge. We are now where we are. The recent IPCC report talks about the closing window of opportunity to act. Coming at a time of extreme chaos and suffering in Europe, it is hard to see how we will navigate the coming weeks, months and years. How we deal with our own fear and concern regarding these issues is very important. War is obviously not the answer and neither is any sense of nihilism. Being able to focus on the problems and act with a broader sense of community is far more rewarding. In the next episode I am speaking to climate and policy analyst, David Spratt, Research Director at the Breakthrough National Centre for Climate Restoration in Melbourne, Australia. We will be discussing a range of subjects including the accelerating rate of impacts, what climate models don't tell us, as well as the tipping point risks we can't see or measure and that may already have been crossed.
