A Death Investigator's Memoir.
Barbara Butcher is the former chief of staff and director of the Forensic Sciences Training Program at the New York City Office of Chief Medical Examiner (OCME). Only the second woman hired as a death investigator in Manhattan (and the first to last more than three months), during her 23 years there she investigated more than 5,500 death scenes. She also created and directed the federally funded Forensic Sciences Training Program at OCME, taught at the New York University School of Medicine and New York Medical College, consulted for governmental agencies around the world, and spoken at disaster planning conferences across the United States. In What the Dead Know, Butcher delves into the journey that led to her unlikely career, revealing some surprisingly useful life lessons and stories about some of New York's most notorious crime scenes. ''Impossible to outwit'' (Entertainment Weekly), Kate White is the New York Times bestselling author of the psychological thrillers The Second Husband, The Fiancée, and The Secrets You Keep. Her other works include the Bailey Weggins mystery series and numerous popular career advice books for women. White formerly served as editor-in-chief of five major magazines, including a 14-year stint at Cosmopolitan. True Crime Tuesday presents What The Dead Know: The Life Of A NY Death Investigator with Chief Medical Examiner/Investigator/Author, Barbara Butcher! Barbara Butcher was early in her recovery from alcoholism when she found an unexpected lifeline: a job at the Medical Examiner's Office in New York City. The second woman ever hired for the role of Death Investigator in Manhattan, she was the first to last more than three months. The work was gritty, demanding, morbid, and sometimes dangerous – she loved it. Butcher (yes, that is her real name, and she has heard all the jokes) spent day in and day out investigating double homicides, gruesome suicides, and most heartbreaking of all, underage rape victims who had also been murdered. In What the Dead Know, she writes about investigating more than 5,500 death scenes, 680 of which were homicides. In the opening chapter, she describes how just from sheer luck of having her arm in cast, she avoided a boobytrapped suicide. Later in her career, she describes working the nation's largest mass murder, the attack on 9/11, where she and her colleagues initially relied on family members' descriptions to help distinguish among the 21,900 body parts of the victims. On Today's show, Barbara opens you up a little to her world, professional and personal, and shows us why it takes not just strength, but the best of our humanity to do what she does. Barbara Butcher – What the dead know: learning about life as a New York City death investigator...with TRE's Selina MacKenzie
Dealing with death was a part of Barbara Butcher's day job. In her new memoir, the former "death investigator" at the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner of New York City takes readers through the homicides and crime scenes she investigated throughout her tenure, and the life lessons she learned along the way. Butcher joins us to discuss her book, What the Dead Know.
A riveting, deeply personal memoir of more than twenty years of death-scene investigations by New York City death investigator Barbara Butcher. Barbara Butcher was early in her recovery from alcoholism when she found an unexpected lifeline: a job at the Medical Examiner's Office in New York City. The second woman ever hired for the role of Death Investigator in Manhattan, she was the first to last more than three months. The work was gritty, demanding, morbid, and sometimes dangerous - she loved it. Butcher (yes, that is her real name, and she has heard all the jokes) spent day in and day out investigating double homicides, gruesome suicides, and most heartbreaking of all, underage rape victims who had also been murdered. In What the Dead Know, she writes with the kind of New York attitude and bravado you might expect from decades in the field, investigating more than 5,500 death scenes, 680 of which were homicides. This is the fascinating and stunning real-life story of a woman who, in dealing with death every day, learned surprising lessons about life-and how some of those lessons saved her from becoming a statistic herself. Fans of Kathy Reichs, Patricia Cornwell, and true crime won't be able to put it down.

Such a pleasure to share this with you all. Today Clare brings in the powerhouse Anne Sexton with a poem called The Truth the Dead Know. You can read the poem here.
I have told you what the spirits have told me about heaven and I have been to heaven many times and seen it. The first time I was to heaven was in 1978 and I know what I saw in heaven so I understand what the spirits are talking about. There is many sort of death and I will tell you about them when those words show up that is about death in the King James Bible.

Hey I’ll give you for reasons why I believe our fellow Christians in heaven can see what it is were doing here on earth.
1. Exemption from mitzvos even when not in front of the deceased The Mishnah on 17b states that someone who is required to bury his dead relative, who is right now in front of him, is exempt from mitzvos. According to Rav Ashi, he is exempt from all mitzvos, even when not in the presence of the deceased. Rav Ashi learns this from Avraham and the burial of Sarah. The pasuk says, And Avraham arose from the presence of his dead, followed by the next verse after Avraham had walked away, … that I may bury my dead from before me. 2. Mocking the dead One is not permitted to wear tefillin, learn from a sefer or wear his tzitzis out in a cemetery. Doing so is considered mocking the dead (לרש לעג ,(because they can’t do mitzvos anymore. 3. Are the dead aware of worldly events? In discussing the question of whether the dead are aware of wordly events, the Gemara relates the story of a chasid who successfully planted his crops each year based on forecasts he overheard from two spirits talking in a cemetery. בן י'ח לחופה – Chuppah – Siman Two spirits standing under a chuppah in a cemetery discuss next year’s weather forecast and are overheard by a rich farmer with tucked-in tzitzis, who is about to bury his mother.

On September 21, 2013, a crowd of 14,689 Brooklyn hockey fans cheered when the NHL’s New York Islanders played a pre-season exhibition against the New Jersey Devils in the sleekly modern Barclays Center – the first-ever contest of its kind in New York’s most populous borough, and one that set into motion the eventual relocation of the team from Long Island to Kings County. What few in the stands realized, however, was that the borough, technically, was the home to a professional hockey team many decades earlier. Originally funded from a Depression-era bootlegger’s fortune, the New York (later renamed Brooklyn) Americans pre-dated the NHL’s long-running and legendary New York Rangers by a year, and were the star attraction of the third incarnation of Madison Square Garden during its debut in 1925. Featuring brightly colored, red-white-and-blue, star-spangled uniforms, and a roster of largely Canadian players from the recently league-expelled Hamilton (ON) Tigers, the “Amerks” were the immediate toast of the Gotham sports scene upon their arrival. So much so that MSG majority owner Tex Rickard soon connived with the NHL board of governors to secure his own franchise (originally dubbed “Tex’s Rangers”) the following season – quickly dooming the Americans to second-class status as the league’s loveable losers for the rest of their mostly lamentable run through 1942. Documentary filmmaker Dale Morrisey (Only the Dead Know the Brooklyn Americans) joins host Tim Hanlon to discuss New York’s (and Brooklyn’s) original and oft-forgotten National Hockey League franchise, and the unique part hockey history it occupies.
