POPULARITY
Max Roach — the indomitable drummer, activist, bandleader and composer — was born 100 years ago this month, on Jan. 10, 1924. His centenary is the perfect opportunity to reconsider how his genius changed the game, and not just in rhythmic terms. So in this episode, we talk about Max as an innovator and a liberator, a connector and a catalyst. We also consider his sterling example as an elder, with deep insights from Nasheet Waits — one of Max's leading inheritors on drums, someone he mentored from an early age. Nasheet has incredible stories to tell, and he shares them here. In this week's episode Lieutenant Colonel Dave Grossman, a retired US Army Ranger and psychology professor known for his expertise in violence and crime psychology joins me to discuss the current state of crime and violence, emphasizing the need for individuals to be prepared and armed, both physically and mentally. Listen in as we also touch on topics such as hunting, gun laws, media influence, and the impact of sleep deprivation on societal problems. Lt. Col. Dave Grossman is an internationally recognized scholar, author, soldier, and speaker who is one of the world's foremost experts in the field of human aggression and the roots of violence and violent crime. Col. Grossman is a former West Point psychology professor, Professor of Military Science, and an Army Ranger who has combined his experiences to become the founder of a new field of scientific endeavor, which has been termed “killology.” In this new field Col. Grossman has made revolutionary new contributions to our understanding of killing in war, the psychological costs of war, the root causes of the current "virus" of violent crime that is raging around the world, and the process of healing the victims of violence, in war and peace. Today Col. Grossman is the director of Grossman On Truth, LLC (www.GrossmanOnTruth.com). In the wake of the 9/11 terrorist attacks, he has written and spoken extensively on the terrorist threat, with articles published in the Harvard Journal of Law and Civil Policy and many leading law enforcement journals, and he has been inducted as a “Life Diplomate” by the American Board for Certification in Homeland Security, and a “Life Member” of the American College of Forensic Examiners Institute. “Deeds Not Words!” was the slogan of the militant sufragettes who fought for the vote. We get into some of their dramatic acts and some of the reasonings of their leaders – which are not always discussed in their full detail today. Also the (non-socialist) part of the pacifist movement – a crowd the socialists … Continue reading "World War Civ 15: Sufragettes and Pacifists"
We were proud to be invited to attend and roll tape on the second annual Unified Jam during SXSW in Austin, and this week's podcast includes portions of two of the day's panels. The second updates the ongoing fight for reproductive justice in Texas: "Reclaiming Rights: Organizing in a Post-Roe World" was moderated by Cy White, managing editor of Austin Woman magazine and features former Texas State Senator, Deeds Not Words founder and current Planned Parenthood Texas Votes Senior Advisor Wendy Davis, Texas State Representative Donna Howard, former NARAL Pro-Choice America president and current Purpose president Ilyse Hogue, and Avow Executive Director Emily Martin. Deeds not words from International leading women's rights activist Helen PankhurstIn this episode I am in conversation with Helen Pankhurst an international leading women's rights activist, an experienced advocate and passionate collaborative campaigner for social justice. We delve into how Deeds not Words matter, why we must choose to challenge, to connect and dialogue with each other – locally and globally. We talk about what it means to live and lead a portfolio life, and how fun and purpose go hand in hand, and how shoulder to shoulder we can make a difference together. Helen established the Centenary Action Group (CAG) in 2018, to mark the century of some women getting the right to vote by campaigning for greater representation of women, in all their diversity, addressing the barriers that prevent women from taking part in politics, through collaboration, joint action and campaigning.Helen also leads the charity GM4Women2028, a coalition of change makers committed to making Greater Manchester a better place for women and girls, in all their diversity to live, work and prosper. She is a mother of two children and the great granddaughter of Emmeline Pankhurst and granddaughter of Sylvia Pankhurst who herself was an alumni of Manchester School of Art. Addressing the law and its ramifications for women (and especially women of color), Miller and Davis bring front line news and historical context to this demoralizing moment in the years-long battle for women's reproductive rights. They also consider the political fallout and offer ideas for a path forward in what is sure to be a long and rocky road ahead. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit podcastchoices.com/adchoices

“When we got to 4 shelters, was probably when people stopped saying that your model is never going to work...when we opened it, the wonderful manager rang me and said we've just taken in our first resident, it's a 17 year old women with a 6 month baby leaving terrible domestic violence. That was a full circle moment because this person could not have got in anywhere else." Take flight into Annabelle's journey - curious nature growing up despite her parents splitting very early with a roster of ideas and interests she explored. Hear about how the passion for social justice and equality originated through some trial and error, her expansive family being close with her grandparents and now children. We go in depth as Annabelle talks about leaving her secure job to join what was then a NGO start up that she now leads as CEO helping women and kids feel safe, find shelter and build a life and hear about the the role we can all play as a community to support the efforts. In today's episode we spoke to Wendy Moore about her book No Man’s Land (Basic Books), as its described in the Wall Street Journal, the "absorbing and powerful" story of two pioneering suffragette doctors who shattered social expectations and transformed modern medicine during World War I. Its a book where Wendy illuminates a moment of global war and pandemic when women were, for the first time, allowed to operate on men. Their fortitude and brilliance serve as powerful reminders of what women can achieve against all odds (Amazon).Wendy Moore is a journalist and author of several previous books, including How to Create the Perfect Wife and Wedlock, a Sunday Times best seller. Her writing has appeared in The Times, The Guardian, The Observer, and the Sunday Telegraph. She lives in London. Una hermosa narración de un hecho histórico: cómo un grupo de mujeres lideradas por Flora Murray y Louisa Garrett Anderson se hicieron cargo del primer hospital llevado sólo por mujeres en Inglaterra durante la Primera Guerra Mundial. Una admirable historia de lucha por la igualdad de derechos, valor, coraje, amor y determinación, que les recomiendo plenamente.Para que la conversación no perdiera su esencia, se publica cómo se grabó: en inglés. Try as he might, Pat can't escape Mike's jones for jazz mixed with politics, so he submits and the boys do a trawl through just a few of the examples of art-music and rhetoric spilling forth from improvising musicians less than thrilled, let us posit, by the political bent of the last few years. Do the bastards pontificate more than the music they're criticizing? You be the judge. Cutting edge acts such as Black Sabbath, Jethro Tull, and the Go-Go's give Pop Matters that contemporary vibe it so desperately needs. Wendy Davis came into the spotlight in 2013 when she took to the Texas Senate floor to perform a 13 hour filibuster to block a bill that would severely impact abortion rights. She received her degree from Harvard and practiced law for several years before becoming Texas’s State Senator from 2009 to 2015. She is also the founder of Deeds Not Words, a non-profit organization that focuses on engaging young women in politics. Her and Jonathan sat down backstage in Austin Texas while on the road for his comedy tour to discuss her epic filibuster, the current state of Texas politics and why she’s passionately running for Texas’s 21st Congressional District in 2020! GRP 137-Deeds not Words: A discussion with a Canadian Tier 1 Sniper Joining me for this week's podcast is Jeff Depatie. Jeff served in the Canadian Army before going to selection for their Tier 1 Special Forces unit JTF2. Serving for over a decade as an Assaulter, and Sniper Jeff saw combat across the globe. During the emergence of ISIS, the JTF2 were some of the first western forces on the ground, engaging ISIS on the battlefield. We discussed the common ancestor of American and Canadian Special Operations, the "First Special Service Force," or "Devil's Brigade." The FSSF was a joint unit between the two countries, taking on some of the most dangerous missions during WW2. Canadian Snipers hold several of the world's longest kill shots ever recorded included a 3500-meter hit. We discussed the dynamics and culmination of years of cross-training with the British SAS and American Special ops that led to the skills Canadian long gunners now possess. Jeff now runs a company that puts civilians through a special forces selection type of experience and uses a method he calls "Post Traumatic Growth," or PTS. They utilize PTS to arm people with tools to get through challenging situations in life. While we're on break, we're revisiting some of our favorite episodes from Season 1. This week, Wendy Davis officially filed to be on the ballot for U.S. Congress in Texas's 21st district (Becky's district!). We thought a proper way to celebrate was to re-play one of our favorite interviews -- the one where Wendy made her first ever public mention that she was considering running for this seat. She also talks lessons learned from run for governor in 2014, and how a "painfully shy" book-loving little girl grows up to become a modern feminist icon and rabble rouser. Plus, we wade into the "Creepy Uncle Joe"-infested waters and discuss intent vs impact. We also get a primer in how our Texas schools get their dollar bills and learn about HB3, the most comprehensive school funding legislation Texas has passed in decades (no thanks to Rep. Jonathan Stickland, the lone "no" vote). And so much more! PRESENTING SPONSOR: This episode of The Rabble is brought to you by “Supper Club Szn” by Puli.Ra and the Austin Winery. Each month's dinner features a specially curated wine selection and menu dreamed up by chef Deepa Shridhar who combines her deep South Indian roots, Nordic pragmatism, and super fresh Texas ingredients to make some crazy delicious shit happen. These bills are currently moving through the Texas legislature, and we urgently need to call our state senators to OPPOSE expanding the school marshal program in our state. SB 244 would remove current restrictions to allow unlimited armed "marshals" (school staff) per school. SB 406 would weaken the current responsible storage requirements for school marshals. We try to maintain our cool while interviewing shero Wendy Davis about her plans for 2020, lessons learned from 2014, and how a "painfully shy" book-loving little girl grows up to become a modern feminist icon and rabble rouser. We also get a primer in how our Texas schools get their dollar bills and learn about HB3, the most comprehensive school funding legislation Texas has passed in decades (no thanks to Rep. When it comes to living with integrity, fewer phrases are as important as “Deeds, Not Words.”
In her latest book, Eve Was Shamed, British barrister Baroness Helena Kennedy QC forensically examines the pressing new evidence that women are still being discriminated against throughout the legal system. The law holds up a mirror to society and it is failing women, she says, and the #MeToo campaign has been in part a reaction to those failures. So what comes next? She talks to Róisín Ingle. Later: 'Deeds Not Words', is a conference at the National Museum in Dublin on Saturday November 3rd looking at a century of change since some Irish women got the vote in 1918. Irish Times journalist Bernice Harrison, is delivering a fascinating speech at it about the design of the first uniforms for women in the Irish Army. She joins Dr Tina Kinsella, who is chairing a panel on women’s bodies, to explain what it’s all about.

A little over two years ago, Wendy Davis founded Deeds Not Words in response to the millennial population's strong desire for political change. Deeds Not Words satisfies this calling by providing digital resources and content surrounding particular issues of interest. The organization also works on the ground in Texas to demystify the political process for young people. They encourage this motivated population to lead the conversation and take action to implement change by increasing voter turnout, getting involved in the political process, and demanding change from our political leaders. The ladies had the opportunity to interview the incredible Wendy Davis LIVE on the SXSW podcast stage! If you’re not familiar with Wendy Davis, she is a former Texas senator and founder of the nonprofit Deeds Not Words. You may have heard of Wendy after she stood for 11 hours in the floor of the senate chamber in the Texas legislature to filibuster against highly restrictive reproductive rights in the state - single-handedly making pink tennis shoes a political fashion statement. Since then she’s started her own non-profit Deeds Not Words that unites women to drive change. Enjoy this show and get ready to feel empowered and ready to take action!

Former Texas Senator Wendy Davis sits down to talk about Deeds Not Words, a group founded by Davis to advocate for women's equality. Davis, the Democratic gubernatorial candidate in 2014, also talks about the collective power of people in influencing politics and how college students can affect the upcoming election.
Senator Wendy Davis is a Democratic politician from Fort Worth, Texas best known for her 2013 eleven-hour-long filibuster to block a Senate bill which included restrictive abortion regulations. The filibuster garnered Senator Davis national notoriety which she propelled into her 2014 gubernatorial campaign. Senator Davis stopped by Lance’s to catch up on a variety of things including: growing up in Texas, her new women’s equality organization: Deeds Not Words, the 2016 United States Presidential Election and much more.
Despite the Liberals winning a landslide election in 1906, the political situation in the UK was turbulent. Liberal constituencies were jockeying for favor. The new Labour Party and the working classes were increasing in power. The women's suffrage movement was getting militant, even violent. And the Irish Question hung over everything.
Former Texas State Senator Wendy Davis -- most famous for her filibuster to stop legislation that would severely restrict abortions in that state -- talks with Kara Swisher about her new digital initiative Deeds Not Words, which hopes to mobilize young women into political action. She discusses her history of confronting misogyny and discrimination, both in real life and online, and why progress in women's rights has been so slow. Davis thinks women must forcefully call out attempts to silence them and learn to put a human face on grim statistics. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices
