Welcome back to Leaving The Nest! I am so happy to have Devin Jones from episode 13 join the show again, this time to talk about how to make the most out of your first career fair experience! We share some helpful tips that will help you present your best self to employers, everything from your attire to your elevator pitch. Devin has truly seen it all when it comes to career fairs, everything from nervous first-timers to seasoned pros, and she shares what works and what doesn't when it comes to dressing the part, developing a confident elevator pitch, and why it's important to be engaged and respectful at the booths. We talk about how to avoid common mistakes and pitfalls such as getting too distracted by your phone which can send the wrong message. We focus instead on some strategies for making a lasting impression, be it via a quick conversation or by simply making eye contact and being polite. In addition, we discuss the far too often overlooked post-fair follow-up. It's not just about dropping off your resume. You need to also show maturity and initiative and make connections that will benefit you long after the event ends. Whether you are a student getting ready for your first career fair or someone looking to refresh your approach, this episode is packed with advice that you will not want to miss! Key Takeaways: Dress professionally, and wear neutral-toned, business-appropriate attire; avoid casual clothes like sweatpants! Keep your elevator pitch short and confident by introducing who you are, why you are there, and what you are looking for. Engage in a respectful manner, and avoid distractions such as your phone. Arrive prepared with 20-30 copies of your resume! Be sure to follow up by sending a thank-you message within 48 hours! Thanks again for listening to Leaving The Nest! For many of us, life was so certain the week before. But in a matter of days, everything became so uncertain so quickly. Now imagine being a senior in college getting hired at your dream job only to find out you wouldn't be able to walk at graduation and your start date was pushed out to an unknown time in the future. In this episode, I'm joined by the queen of self-love, Devin Jones, who is an International Coach and creator of the program SACRED: 7 Pillars to Self-Love and Liberation. After living as her own worst critic for over a decade and nearly ruining her life and marriage as a result, Devin learned the healing power of self-love, revitalized her relationship, and became a self-love coach to teach others how to do the same. We unpack ALOT in this episode: how to peel back the layers of you and figure out who you truly are and the honesty that comes with developing a relationship with yourself that's grounded in acceptance, boundaries, and your values. We talk about performance, regaining awareness, and the savior complex. Devin also defines and expands upon the concepts of sovereignty and reverence, and why we need to stop hanging out with our shadows and start moving towards doing the work. Jones was very informative on issues pertaining to the black community and how politics works in cities like Chicago. He gave some enlightening insight on black Republicans in the city and the failure of the local GOP to mobilize these individuals. This episode goes into parts of my journey of coming home to myself (aka radical self love) and I talk about how this is the least selfish thing I have EVER done and HOW it has allowed me to show up in my power and can do the same for you. It's also maybe one of the more interesting shows because I may or may not also incorporate an "analogy" about cheese that likely was not an analogy at all... If you have been hesitant regarding self love or really just over how it is portrayed in the majority of the media. This is for YOU! It is not action friends, it is heart. This is a previously recorded podcast from a show called, "God's Praises' Tell", which used to be hosted by the Archdiocese of Chicago. The host of this episode was Devin Jones. On September 11, 2012, we talked about Prince Hall Freemasonry, which is the predominately Black sect of Freemasonry that I once belonged to, and we also talked about why Catholics cannot be Freemasons. It was originally planned that there would be a Part II to this topic, but I was not asked to come back. It is unknown why the Archdiocese of Chicago canned this discussion. The post Prince Hall Freemasonry & Why Catholics Cannot be Freemasons first appeared on DavidLGray.INFO.
