We hope you enjoy entering the Mind of a Writer.AWM PODCAST NETWORK HOMEMore about The Make Believers:In McSweeney's 78: The Make Believers (guest edited by Thi Bui and Vu Tran), ten writers of the Vietnamese diaspora write from the eclectic hodgepodge that is their shared imagination of what it means to be "Vietnamese." Packaged in a beautiful foil-stamped cigar box (with art by Bui on each and every surface), and including two booklets, one menu, and a glossary of broken Vietnamese, the work in this issue spans from highbrow to lowbrow, proper to naughty, logical to absurd, and painful to funny. Published on the occasion of the fiftieth anniversary of the end of the Vietnam War, its contributors work across perspectives and multiple languages. In this completely singular, nothing-else-of-its-kind anthology, these artists write (and illustrate!) from a place of collective loss and joy.Featuring work by: Doan Bui, Thi Bui, H'Rina DeTroy, Anna Moï, Hoài Huong Nguyen, Vaan Nguyen, Isabelle Thuy Pelaud, Bao Phi, Paul Tran, and Vu Tran. Kevin King: Conference Season, Networking & The State of Amazon Selling The King is Back! Host Danny McMillan welcomes back Kevin King, a well-known figure in the Amazon selling space. Kevin has been on a whirlwind tour, hitting 17 flights by March as he gears up for the busy conference season. In this episode, Kevin shares insider insights on key Amazon events, the evolving seller landscape, and why stepping outside the Amazon bubble is crucial for long-term success. The Amazon Conference Circuit Titan Event in Cancun: A high-level mastermind with seven and eight-figure sellers. Kevin notes a big increase in expertise at this year's event. Prosper Show (Las Vegas): Not just an expo—MDS (Million Dollar Sellers) Inspire Event kicks off before the main show. "Every night there are 2-3 major parties surrounding Prosper," Kevin says. The growing trend of "satellite events" around conferences, similar to Amazon Accelerate in Seattle. Iceland: Billion Dollar Seller Summit (BDSS): Kevin's last BDSS in its current form before shifting to a new event model. Over 120 high-level sellers attending, with an average revenue of $7.5 million. AI Contest, Market Masters, and Ted Talk-style sessions. Streaming available for those who can't attend in person. Post-BDSS event Elevate 360 focuses on non-Amazon marketing, featuring experts like Mr. Beast's YouTube strategist and Google Ads expert John Moran. Why Amazon Sellers Need to Expand Their Horizons Kevin emphasizes a major issue: Amazon sellers operate in a small fishbowl. “We stay in our little ecosystem and don't learn from general marketers,” Kevin warns. Successful sellers must learn skills from outside Amazon, such as YouTube, funnels, paid ads, and branding. Many Amazon educators only teach TikTok or PPC from an Amazon perspective, which limits sellers' potential. Kevin's Elevate 360 event brings in non-Amazon experts to teach sellers real marketing strategies. The Importance of Amazon Events & Networking Conferences aren't just about content, they're about networking and high-value connections. Kevin shares a powerful success story: A seller with a multi-million-dollar supplement brand was suspended for 8 months. After a hot seat session at Market Masters, Kevin advised them to attend Amazon Accelerate's Genius Bar in Seattle. The seller flew there, met an Amazon rep, and got reinstated in 24 hours. "These events can literally save your business," Kevin says. Seller Sessions Live: A New Approach Danny shares details about his upcoming Seller Sessions Live event, which shifts from the traditional conference model to a more hands-on learning experience: Built from the ground up with full participation from attendees. ClickUp documentation for frameworks, prompts, and strategies. Custom AI tools to reduce seller decision fatigue. “Most conference attendees take notes but struggle with retention and implementation. This new format solves that.” Kevin King's Newsletter & Industry Influence Kevin's Amazon newsletter is now the #1 source of industry insights. “More people come up to me at events and say they love the newsletter than anything else I do,” he says. He also runs four major events per year, including: BDSS & Elevate 360 (Iceland) Billion Dollar Seller Summit (Virtual) Market Masters (High-Level Mastermind) The Future of AI for Amazon Sellers AI tools must go beyond basic ChatGPT prompts—sellers need practical, plug-and-play solutions. Kevin and Norm Farrar are launching DragonFish, a new service suite that includes: AI-driven branding Advertising & content creation Managed services for Amazon & Shopify sellers Final Thoughts Attending the right events is crucial—it's not just about learning but also making connections that can change your business. Amazon sellers must think bigger—general marketing skills will separate average sellers from great ones. Kevin and Danny both challenge sellers to step outside their comfort zones and level up.

There is one special place that simultaneously terrifies and has unexplainable pull: 300 ships gone missing, 75 aircrafts never found; you're right, that's all about the Bermuda Triangle. Few people are aware of what the life is like at the bottom of the Bermuda Triangle – are you ready to meet the most shocking and scary creatures ever? Dragonfish live at the staggering depth of 5 to 7 thousand feet. This fish looks quite terrifying, with its black coloring and the light it produces on its own. Unlike other deep-water inhabitants, dragonfish produces light in the infrared range while the blue and green range is what other fish stick to. Vampire Squid has the largest eyes in terms of proportions in the world and is born to live in the depth. These animals are also covered with photophores which distract predators and lure prey. The mouth of the gulper eel is loosely hinged which makes it extremely wide and big. In fact, the length of the jaw of the eel reaches one-fourth of the length of their body. Despite being the owner of an enormous mouth, the gulper eel has tiny teeth, and this means that it isn't supposed to prey on large animals. The Goblin Shark reaches 13 ft in size and is also called the Vampire Shark due to the fact that it avoids light at all cost. Due to this feature, you can see the shark in its natural habitat only if you go as deep as 890 to 4300 ft. Pharynx, a complex feeding apparatus that helps Eunice Aphroditois catch the prey, can turn inside out, not unlike glove fingers. It has strong and extremely sharp mandibles which can easily cut the prey in half due to the strength and speed of the worm's attack. These are just some of the creatures that lurk in the depth of the Bermuda Triangle. Who knows what other unbelievable horror-movie beasts we can meet there? Nobody knows for sure what makes crafts disappear in this area. -Dragonfish looks quite terrifying, with its black coloring and the light it produces on its own in case of danger. -The Vampire Squid has is bright red eyes and crimson cloak that looks like webbing. In case of a threat, these creatures can invert their skin exposing their spines. -The pouch-like structure of the lower jaw allows the eel to deposit its prey there. Even the stomach of the eel can stretch so much that the creature can hold there a huge amount of food. -The Goblin Shark reaches 13 ft in size and is also called the Vampire Shark due to the fact that it avoids light at all cost. As soon as the prey appears in the vicinity, the jaw of the shark will elongate and grab it. -The worm buries itself in the seafloor with just a fraction of its body exposed. It has five antennae it uses to sense the prey. It might sound impossible to hide a cluster of hundreds of the biggest and brightest stars in the galaxy — but it's not. In fact, what could be the most impressive stellar nursery in the Milky Way wasn't discovered until 2010. It's hidden behind clouds of dust, which absorb the stars' visible light. Astronomers found it by looking at infrared light, which shines through the dust. The Dragonfish Nebula is about 30,000 light-years away. It's in Crux, the southern cross, which is too far south to see from the U.S. Its contours resemble the deep-sea dragonfish. Astronomers have discovered about 400 stars that form a cluster inside the nebula — one of the most impressive populations in the entire galaxy. All of those stars are members of the two brightest and heaviest classes of stars. They're only a few million years old, but many of them are almost done. They'll soon explode as supernovas. The hottest and brightest of these stars blow away the gas and dust around them. That's carved a hole in the nebula a hundred light-years across, forming the “mouth” of the dragonfish. As the gas flows outward, it squeezes the material around it to make more stars. Two bright clumps of newly forming stars form the fish's “eyes.” In all, the mass of the nebula is about a hundred thousand times the mass of the Sun. That means it'll be giving birth to more stars for a long time to come — hidden in the depths of the Milky Way.  Script by Damond Benningfield Support McDonald Observatory

This week, Pulitzer Prize winner Viet Thanh Nguyen discusses his new book A Man of Two Faces, a highly original, blistering, and unconventional memoir in which he rewinds the film of his own life with insight, humor, formal invention, and lyricism. Nguyen is joined by writer and professor Vu Tran. This conversation originally took place October 23, 2023 and was recorded live at the American Writers Museum. AWM PODCAST NETWORK HOME About A Man of Two Faces: Viet Thanh Nguyen expands the genre of personal memoir in A Man of Two Faces by acknowledging larger stories of refugeehood, colonization, and ideas about Vietnam and America, writing with his trademark sardonic wit and incisive analysis, as well as a deep emotional openness about his life as a father and a son. At the age of four, Nguyen and his family are forced to flee his hometown of Ban Mê Thuột and come to the USA as refugees. After being removed from his brother and parents and homed with a family on his own, Nguyen is later allowed to resettle into his own family in suburban San José. But there is violence hidden behind the sunny façade of what he calls AMERICA™. One Christmas Eve, when Nguyen is nine, while watching cartoons at home, he learns that his parents have been shot while working at their grocery store, the SàiGòn Mới, a place where he sometimes helps price tins of fruit with a sticker gun. Years later, as a teenager, the blood-stirring drama of the films of the Vietnam War such as Apocalypse Now throw Nguyen into an existential crisis: how can he be both American and Vietnamese, both the killer and the person being killed? When he learns about an adopted sister who has stayed back in Vietnam, and ultimately visits her, he grows to understand just how much his parents have left behind. And as his parents age, he worries increasingly about their comfort and care, and realizes that some of their older wounds are reopening. Profound in its emotions and brilliant in its thinking about cultural power, A Man of Two Faces explores the necessity of both forgetting and of memory, the promises America so readily makes and breaks, and the exceptional life story of one of the most original and important writers working today. VIET THANH NGUYEN was born in Vietnam and raised in America. He is the author of The Committed, which continues the story of The Sympathizer, awarded the 2016 Pulitzer Prize in Fiction, alongside seven other prizes. He is also the author of the short story collection The Refugees; the nonfiction book Nothing Ever Dies, a finalist for the National Book Award; and is the editor of an anthology of refugee writing, The Displaced. He is the Aerol Arnold Professor of English and American Studies and Ethnicity at the University of Southern California and a recipient of fellowships from the Guggenheim and MacArthur foundations. He lives in Los Angeles. VU TRAN is the author of Dragonfish—a New York Times Notable Book and a San Francisco Chronicle Best Books of the Year—as well as a forthcoming novel, Your Origins. His writing has also appeared in the O. Henry Prize Stories, the Best American Mystery Stories, Ploughshares, Virginia Quarterly, and the New York Times. Born in Vietnam and raised in Oklahoma, Vu received his MFA from the Iowa Writers' Workshop and his PhD from the Black Mountain Institute in Las Vegas, and is also the recipient of a Whiting Writers' Award and fellowships from the NEA, MacDowell, Yaddo, Bread Loaf, and Sewanee. He teaches English and Creative Writing at the University of Chicago, where he is an Associate Professor of Practice in the Arts.

While at CES 2022, DroneDJ's Seth Kurkowski had the opportunity to speak with the owner of Autel Robotics, Maxwell Lee. At Autel's booth, the two spoke about the company's latest products, the Autel EVO Nano and Lite series, as well as the company's more high-end offerings. Autel EVO Nano and Lite The EVO Nano, Nano+, Lite, and Lite+ join the company's EVO II series of drones as the company's lower-cost consumer drones. While these drones may be smaller and cheaper, Lee doesn't want consumers to underestimate the power of the drones. With impressive battery life and high-quality cameras, the Lite and Nano drones become easy-to-transport content creation machines. Autel EVO II As the EVO II gets older, and the Lite+ comes in with impressive video creation features, it may be easy to think that the EVO II is losing its top spot, but it hasn't. The additional sensors and more tailored app continue to position the EVO II as the company's drone for more professional video production and uses. Dragonfish While the Dragonfish vehicle may be prohibitively expensive for most of us, it isn't tailored or meant for the average person. The extremely long battery life and extensive camera options make the Dragonfish perfect for enterprise or law-enforcement purposes. Whether that's border patrol or watching for pirates, Lee made it clear that this drone is exclusively for non-weaponized purposes. Tom and Cody Vanderholm discuss Drones and SureSpeed. Dragonfish from Alltel is beyond cool, but is it useful for your operation? You bet it is! Crop Scouting is a breeze with level of cameras on this fixed wing drone. SureSpeed from AgLeader allows accuracy at higher speed. Cost of Ownership? AgLeader took that into consideration in designing SureSpeed. Compared to other systems, you'll love it. Heather fell in love with color at New Trier High School in Winnetka, IL where they had an amazing art department and after that she attended a private design school in Chicago where she left with honors. There could be a long drawn out story about how she got started dyeing yarn but it's really simple, she loves big bold color, loves yarn and loves knitting and crocheting. Heather is also an avid lover of cake.  Heather’s husband Christopher works for the shop full time so they are a true family run business. Heather and Chris met at work so they are used to working together, a question they get asked all the time. They have been at this for about 7 years and haven't killed each other yet, so they are calling it a win! Their daughter Grace is in High School and can be found helping with making the new stitch markers they recently added to their shop. It's not very riveting, but they love it!       On the Needles:(0:47) Gigi's new arbitrary knitting rule: finish something out of the UFO bin before casting on something new. In March, we co-presented a series of conversations with DVAN, the Diasporic Vietnamese Artists Network. For this podcast we’ll be listening to an introduction by DVAN founder and author of the Pulitzer Prize-winning novel The Sympathizer Viet Than Nguyen. Following this is a conversation around the concept of Vietnamese ghost stories moderated by Lawrence-Minh Bùi Davis and featuring authors Violet Kupersmith, Thanhha Lai, & Vu Tran. The order they’re listed here is the same order they answer the first question. Together, they dissect the concept of the ghost story, as a metaphor for the immigrant, a reflection of the self and one’s deepest fears and insecurities, and then broaden the conversation to talk about community and what a Vietnamese diasporic literary community looks like to them. Violet Kupersmith is the author of The Frangipani Hotel, a collection of supernatural short stories about the legacy of the Vietnam War. She is writing a forthcoming novel about ghosts and American expats in modern-day Saigon. Thanhha Lai is the author of the National Book Award-winning novel Inside Out & Back Again and the novel Listen, Slowly.  Her third novel, Butterfly Yellow, will be published this fall. Vu Tran is the author of Dragonfish, which was a NY Times Notable Book and a San Francisco Chronicle Best Book of the Year. He is the recipient of a Whiting Award and an NEA Fellowship. Lawrence-Minh Bùi Davis is curator of Asian Pacific American Studies at the Smithsonian Asian Pacific American Center. He is also founding Director of the Washington, DC-based arts nonprofit The Asian American Literary Review. Co-sponsored by the APA Institute at NYU.

This week we talk to two artists who see themselves as detectives. Trevor Paglen has designed sculptures for the Fukushima Exclusion Zone, as well as art that's been launched into geostationary orbit. His photographs of secret military bases (taken at long range, using equipment made for astronomers) appeared in the Academy Award–winning documentary Citizenfour. We spoke with him about how to care for one's personal digital hygiene in the age of surveillance. To document torture, mass executions, and human-rights abuses at Saydnaya Prison in Syria, Amnesty International enlisted the help of sound artist Lawrence Abu Hamdan. This week we're presenting Abu Hamdan's sound installation Saydnaya (The Missing 19DB)—that's “DB” as in decibels, the standard measure for the volume of sound. It offers an uncompromising depiction of Saydnaya, a notorious military prison in Syria, believed to be the site of up to fifty hangings each day. It's a compound in the mountains just north of Damascus holding up to twenty thousand people in conditions of enforced silence. Abu Hamdan made the piece through interviews conducted in Istanbul with five survivors from the prison. This episode also features a luminous and digressive review of the Organist, ripped from the heaps of listener commentary on our Apple Podcasts page, by the writer Vu Tran—no stranger to art as detective work himself. His work has been anthologized in Best American Mystery Stories, and his novel Dragonfish adapts and carries forward the tradition of writers like Raymond Chandler and Dashiell Hammett. In his reflections on this podcast, Vu finds Melville's Secret Sharer in the woods of Vermont. What do Edith Wharton, Haruki Murakami, Raymond Chandler, John Fowles, Alfred Hitchcock, and Wong Kar-wai have in common? All are known for their ability to generate a particular mood and atmosphere – and all were selected by our guest, Professor Vu Tran of the University of Chicago, as being particularly inspirational as he wrote his novel Dragonfish. In this episode, Vu and Jacke discuss what makes these works so compelling, how the works helped Vu write his novel, and how a certain American city produces an intense feeling of endless hope and melancholy, twenty-four hours a day.  VU TRAN is an Assistant Professor in the English Department at the University of Chicago and the author of Dragonfish: A Novel (2015). Professor Tran has been described as “a fiction writer whose work thus far is preoccupied with the legacy of the Vietnam War for the Vietnamese who remained in the homeland, the Vietnamese who immigrated to America, and the Americans whose lives have intersected with both.” “Richly satisfying work….[Has] a place on the top shelf of literary thrillers.” —Gerald Bartell, San Francisco Chronicle Works Discussed: Dragonfish: A Novel by Vu Tran The Magus by John Fowles The Wind-Up Bird Chronicle by Haruki Murakami The Age of Innocence by Edith Wharton The Big Sleep by Raymond Chandler Vertigo (dir. Dragonfish (W. W. Norton & Company)Robert, a rugged Oakland cop, still can’t let go of Suzy, the mysterious Vietnamese wife who left him. Now she’s disappeared from her new husband, Sonny, a dangerous Vietnamese smuggler and gambler who blackmails Robert into finding her for him. Pursuing Suzy through the glitzy gambling dens of Las Vegas, Robert finds himself chasing the past that haunts Suzy—one that extends back to a refugee camp in Malaysia after the fall of Saigon and to her daughter, Mai, abandoned long ago, now a steely professional poker player. The dangerous legacy of Suzy’s guilt threatens to immolate them all.Taut, cinematic storytelling, vivid dialogue, and mesmerizing atmosphere combine here with beautiful, original prose. Some aspects of Tran’s own life are present in Dragonfish. He was born on September 17, 1975, six months after the fall of Saigon. In 1980—like the novel’s characters Suzy and her daughter Mai—Vu Tran, with his mother and sister, escaped Vietnam by boat and ended up in the refugee camps on Pulau Bidong. They spent four months there until Tran’s father sponsored them and they moved to the United States.  Their reunion in Tulsa, Oklahoma—where Tran would grow up—was where he met his father for the first time. “On the pure joyous level of great storytelling, Dragonfish is a top notch mystery; but it also deals with so goddamn much: the ramifications of war and the perils of assimilation, the impossibility of straddling two cultures and belonging to none, the limitations of the past, grief, lost lovers, gambling, ghosts, and Vegas, baby, Vegas. Note-perfect. Heartbreaking.  Profound. Dragonfish is a polished dagger of a novel that will cut out your heart."  -- Charles Bock, New York Times bestselling author of Beautiful Children“A haunting, beautifully written novel, almost more ghost story than thriller, as Tran explores the world of refugees, immigrants, and the long hold the past and its dead hold on the present.” – Sara Paretsky, New York Times bestselling author of the V. I. Warshawski novels"Dragonfish is a novel about identity, exile and the chains of memory wrapped in the muscle of a thriller. The suspense kept me turning the pages, but the beautiful writing and aching sense of loss remained with me long after I reached the end.” --  Lisa Brackmann, New York Times bestselling author of Rock Paper Tiger and Dragon Day“Is this an immigrant saga disguised as a crime novel? Or a smart thriller that just happens to be set in the Vietnamese immigrant community in Las Vegas? It’s both -- but what matters is that Vu Tran has written a debut novel of uncommon artistry, about a group of Vietnamese Americans and the history of love, violence, and sacrifice that binds them together and tears them apart.”  – Tom Perrotta, New York Times-bestselling author of Nine Inches and Little Children“Vu Tran's spellbinding debut novel had me turning pages late into the night.  I was drawn in partly by the book's utterly engrossing plot, partly by its vivid portrayal of a pitiless and dangerous Las Vegas, but mostly by its lovingly interwoven themes of loss, longing, renewal, and cultural memory.” – Tim O’Brien, winner of the Dayton Literary Peace Prize for Lifetime Achievement“Vu Tran’s Dragonfish is that rare hybrid marvel—a literary thriller, a narrative of migration and loss that upends the conventions of any form. Tran draws the reader into an exquisitely rendered world of violence and heartbreak, loss and love that is impossible to forget.”  – Dinaw Mengestu, author of The Beautiful Things that Heaven Bears and How to Read the Air“Sometimes it's creepy, like a really fine noir novel. Other times it's heartbreaking, as when it dives deep into the anguish of Vietnamese refugees. But either way, Dragonfish is absolutely gripping. Vu Tran has written a terrific novel.” – Tom Bissell, author of The Father of All Things: A Marine, His Son, and the Legacy of VietnamVu Tran is the winner of a Whiting Award recognizing “exceptional talent and promise,” and he teaches creative writing at the University of Chicago. In 2008, Tran was asked to contribute a short story about Chinatown to the Las Vegas Noir anthology (Akashic Books).  After “This Or Any Desert” was included in the 2009 Best American Mystery Stories, he found himself still intensely drawn to the four main characters—Robert, Suzy, Sonny, and Sonny Jr.. In particular, he thought it would be interesting to apply elements of his own life to their backstories. Tran expanded the story and devised Suzy’s letters, the novel’s secondary narrative, which provides a riveting literary and emotional contrast to the crime narrative.Tod Goldberg is the author of several books of fiction, including the novels Living Dead Girl, a finalist for the Los Angeles Times Book Prize, Fake Liar Cheat and the popular Burn Notice series, as well as two collections of short stories, Simplifyand Other Resort Cities. His essays, nonfiction, and journalism have appeared widely, including, most recently, in Best American Essays 2013. His latest novel, Gangsterland, was release in fall 2014. Tod Goldberg holds an MFA in Creative Writing and Literature from Bennington College and lives in Indio, CA where he directs the Low Residency MFA program in Creative Writing & Writing for the Performing Arts at the University of California, Riverside.
