Keyboardist: Gail NoblesStory by: Gail NoblesPhoto: Rob Mieremet / AnefoUsage: Wikipedia Public DomainToday's topic is the Edwin Hawkins singers. They sing: Children, Oh children, won't you try to get together? Children Oh children, try a little love for your sisters and brothers. My dear friends, today I invite you to join me in a melody that rings through the ages, a song that speaks to our hearts. It is an anthem of love and unity, as expressed by the Edwin Hawkins Singers in their call to "Get Together." The song comes from their 1971 album: The Edwin Hawkins singers-Children Get Together. In a world that often pulls us apart, we hear the clarion call that beckons us to embrace our sisters and brothers with a spirit of love and compassion. In the beauty of this song, we find a profound truth: every child, every individual, is a thread woven into the magnificent creation. We must remember that it is love that binds us together and forges the connections that transcend the barriers of race, creed, and circumstance.Let us take a moment to think about this call. It urges us to reach out—to think about the life we lead and how we interact with one another. Are we lifting each other up? Are we approaching our fellow beings with kindness? Or are we stuck in our own narrow outlooks, forgetting that we are all part of the same human family?Friends, it is not enough to simply coexist. We must actively engage in the sacred act of love. This love is not merely an emotion; it is a duty, a responsibility we owe to one another. It asks us to stand in the face of division, to break down the walls of indifference and to say, "I will take a step toward you; I will meet you where you are."The Edwin Hawkins Singers remind us, "Try a little love for your sisters and brothers." Such simple words carry immense weight. It asks us to take action—to extend our hands, to open our hearts, and to share the burden of one another's struggles. To love is to recognize the inherent dignity in every human being, regardless of where they come from or what they believe.Let us embrace this vision, where love is our guiding principle. Love is powerful enough to heal wounds, to mend broken relationships, and to foster a world where understanding prevails over conflict. In this collective love, we can build bridges, break chains, and uplift those who have been grouped together and oppressed. So please, let us pledge to try a little more love for our sisters and brothers.I'm Gail Nobles. You're Listening to the Gospel Greats. Today's topic: The Edwin Hawkins Singers, Children Get Together.

Since 1975, she has recorded a number of albums of gospel favorites, as well as her original songs. Lillie Knauls To answer the question, "Lillie who?" Here's the answer about this incredibly moving musician. Ms. Knauls was born in Arkansas. Her parents had six girls and one boy. Church was the first place Lillie went in life. When the church doors opened, the Knauls family was there. Lillie can't ever remember not loving the Lord. She asked Him to come into her heart at a very young age. At age 13 her father passed away and the family moved to Seattle, Washington, to live with her Mother's sister. Lillie attended Middle and High school, and began working at Pacific Telephone in 1956. While working at the Telephone Company in San Jose, Lillie took a leave of absence to sing with the Edwin Hawkins Singers in 1970. This was when their song, "O, Happy Day" was Number One on the Gospel charts. It was the first Gospel Song to cross over to Secular Billboard Charts, and sold over a million copies. Ms. Lillie's version can be found on her "Lillie Knauls Past and Present" 2007 Dove Winning CD. They sang all over the United States and Europe, in concert halls and on television shows. Knowing that God called her to a full-time music ministry, she walked away from her job of 22 years at the telephone company. During her farewell luncheon, God gave her a scripture which is still one of her favorites, Matthew 6:26, "Look at the birds of the air; they do not sow or reap or store in barns, yet your Heavenly Father feeds them. Are you not much more valuable than they?" God has proven Himself true to His Word! He is faithful and supplies ALL her needs with no regular paycheck. Around the world several times, the "MUSICIANARY" goes wherever the doors are opened. Ms. Lillie ministers in large and small churches, Aglow Fellowships, rest homes, prisons, Christian Women's clubs and major Christian TV programs. In addition, God gave Ms. Lillie the gift of being single. (1Corinthians 7:32) Lillie is a frequent speaker at Single's Rallies where she shares on the subject, "Single and Satisfied." She stresses the importance of singles being involved with families, especially ones with children. Lillie has covered the globe ministering and singing about God's love in all nations, except those under Communist rule. Once in Rio de Janeiro, she sang to 200,000 people and 500,000 in Ghana! Though the times and places change, her musical message remains the same... strictly Christ-centered! Ms. Lillie now lives in California and has covered the globe ministering and singing about God's love. She continues to bless and delight audiences all over the world! Steven Hi, my name is Steven Williams. Clara And my name is Clara Williams. Steven We would like to introduce you to our podcast series, Voices From The Choir: Oh Happy Day Reflections. I will be your host for these nine episodes as we hear the personal stories from some of the original members of the Northern California State Youth Choir of the Church of God in Christ. As they reflect on their amazing journey in 1969 singing in the State Youth Choir. After recording an album to raise money to travel to a church choir competition, things change when one of the songs broke out to be a hit record. The song was Oh Happy Day, and its success changed everything. It changed their lives and changed the gospel music world, even to this day. The choir transformed into the Edwin Hawkins Singers, and they were thrust into taking their gospel message onto the world stage, performing with some of the biggest artists in music. Clara During our 50 years of marriage, Steve and I have often discussed telling the story of the Northern California State Youth Choir's journey from a denominational church choir into one of the world's top recording artists. We are excited to share for the first time the stories of some of the choir members journey. I am one of the voices you will hear along with some of the original members of the Northern California State Youth Choir. In 1968, the choir recorded an album titled Let US Go Into the House of the Lord. This album included Oh Happy Day. In the spring of 1969, Oh Happy Day reached the US top five on the Billboard charts. On its way to selling 7 million records and won a Grammy Award. Steven The inspiration for this podcast is from the Academy Award winning documentary Summer of Soul, directed by Questlove, which was centered around the 1969 Harlem Cultural Festival, a seminal African-American cultural event that went untold for 50 years. You're going to be hearing stories about growing up in the Bay Area with its rich gospel music history. You will hear stories about raising families, building community and finding joy in spiritual food and daily life. Clara Seeing footage of the choir singing at the Harlem Cultural Festival captured in the Summer of Soul documentary sparked the flame to share stories of our collective yet individual reflections as some of the original members of the Edwin Hawkins Singers. The Harlem Cultural Festival represented one of the many entertainment venues the choir sang at. We sing at rock festivals, jazz festivals, concert halls, Yankee Stadium, and appear on popular television shows of the day. This is a time to tell our story, which has remained stored in our collective memories but not shared beyond friends and family. These reflections show the impact of the music from the album. Let us go to the House of the Lord and how its message impacted the world in our lives. Steven Yes, the stories of the teens and young adults who grew up in the Bay Area in the shadow of the civil rights movement, the Black Panther movement, and the protests surrounding the escalation of the Vietnam War. Their music provided a message for the world to cope with the national and global issues at that time and continues to resonate today. We hope you will be inspired and encouraged by the stories that you will hear. You can find Voices From The Choir Oh Happy Day Reflections wherever you listen to podcasts.

The Beatles: “All things must pass.” What is life. My Sweet Lord. Thanks for the pepperoni. Y mientras tanto… ¡Buenas Vibraciones!

His personality was a natural fit for promotion and sales which proved to be right.. Throughout the 60’s he worked for Columbia and later as a Regional Manager for Mercury Records… promoting the artists Clyde McPhatter, Bobby Byrd, Dee Dee Warwick, and Mack Rice. His next stop was Cameo-Parkway Records where he began a friendship with Neil Bogart. In 1967 they moved to Buddah Records….whe he as a VP signed the Impressions, Edwin Hawkins Singers, the Five Stairsteps and Gladys Knight & the Pips. Thru Buddah records, he also distributed Curtom, T-Neck, Hot Wax, and Sussex Records which had many big names in the black music genre. While at Buddah Records, he produced 2 albums under the name "The Cecil Holmes Soulful Sounds," in 1973. The following year, Cecil relocated to LA to join Neil Bogart for his next venture, Casablanca Records. As one of the original founding partners, Cecil helped launch the label with albums by KISS and Parliament. He also worked closely with the Pips, the Sylvers, Hugh Masekela and he helped Donna Summer, Village People and other disco artists to worldwide success. While working as VP od Casablnca, in 1975, Cecil premiered his own custom label...Chocolate City... named after Parliament's album "Chocolate City". At Chocolate City he had biggest success with the band Cameo…and he also signed Brenda & the Tabulations, Vernon Burch, Randy Brown, Starpoint, 7th Wonder and Kevin Moore (later known as Keb’ Mo). In 1980, Neil Bogart and Cecil Holmes sold Casablanca records to PolyGram. After that, Cecil joined CBS Records as VP for both Columbia and Epic Records. He worked with top acts like Earth, Wind & Fire, Mtume, and Luther Vandross. A few years later, Cecil and Larkin Arnold signed New Kids on the Block to Columbia Records…which brought him the biggest worldwide success. Stay safe, G

This episode tells the story behind The Edwin Hawkins Singers' ceiling-shattering song, ""Oh Happy Day". It was the first gospel song to top the secular charts. Hawkins' use of contemporary sounds - a Latin groove, synthesizers and a soul-influenced lead vocal performance - created a new model for gospel music. But some in the church didn’t want sanctified music to leave the sanctuary.

Keyboard player Billy Preston is another excellent candidate to be called the Fifth Beatle. In April 1969 the Get Back single was credited to "The Beatles with Billy Preston", as was its b-side, Don’t Let Me Down. Along with Tony Sheridan, he was one of just two non-members to receive top billing on a Beatles single. On the Beatles albums ‘Let It Be’ and ‘Abbey Road’ we can listen to Preston’s keyboard playing. Here in the Cellar, for the first time ever, we have a recording of Preston singing, accompanied by the Beatles. He really makes ‘I’ve Got a Feeling’ his own! Billy Preston is also associated with the history of the Beatles in many ways over the years. Billy Preston first met the Beatles in Hamburg in 1962. Preston was playing keyboards for Little Richard, and the Beatles were huge fans. Harrison, the youngest of the Beatles, bonded with the 15-year-old Preston, and they remained life-long friends. They met again in 1969, during the sessions for the Let It Be album and film. According to George Harrison, George had walked out of the studio and gone to a Ray Charles concert in London, where he saw Preston playing the organ. George brought Billy in to play keyboards on some of the Let It Be tracks, as the original idea of Let It Be was to be a "live" recording with no overdubbing, which left none of them to add things like a keyboard part. According to others, George invited Billy to say hello to the Beatles when they were recording in the Apple studios, and Paul invited him to jam along. Anyway, they probably all felt that bringing in an outsider would make the others behave nicer and make the Let It Be set a happier place to be, and it worked, albeit temporarily. Billy worked with The Beatles from 22-31 January 1969, playing Fender Rhodes electric piano and a Lowrey DSO Heritage organ (not Hammond organ!). The Beatles were happy to have Billy in the studio, and after 2 days John suddenly said that he’d like to see Billy join The Beatles. Feeling that two days involvement is rather too short an apprenticeship for membership in the world’s most influential band, Paul half-jokingly stated that it’s bad enough with four of them. George settled the matter by saying that he then would invite Bob Dylan to join The Beatles! If only……….. Preston performed with The Beatles during their 42-minute performance on the rooftop of Apple, on 30 January 1969, which was the band's final public performance. Billy Preston also played on the Abbey Road album. He performed on the songs I Want You (She's So Heavy) and Something, though was not credited. Billy's relationship with the Beatles continued even after their breakup. George Harrison co-produced two albums for Apple with Billy. His greatest hit single, That's The Way God Planned It, was produced by George Harrison. Billy performed with George at the Concert for Bangla Desh at Madison Square Garden, and played on these George Harrison albums: All Things Must Pass, Extra Texture, Dark Horse and 33 1/3. He also played on John's Plastic Ono Band and Sometime in New York City albums (and is reputed to play on Instant Karma!), and with Ringo on the ‘Ringo’ and ‘Goodnight Vienna’ albums. Billy Preston performed at the Concert For George, the 2002 tribute concert for Harrison at the Royal Albert Hall, where he played My Sweet Lord and Isn't It A Pity. In 2003 he was heard on Let It Be... Naked, the de-Spectored version of the 1969 Let It Be sessions. His final public appearance was at a 2005 in Los Angeles, for the re-release of the Concert for Bangladesh film. Afterwards he performed Give Me Love (Give Me Peace On Earth), My Sweet Lord and Isn't It A Pity with Ringo Starr and George's son Dhani. Preston was the first to record My Sweet Lord, for his 1970 album Encouraging Words, and this would come to haunt poor Harrison; Harrison wrote “My Sweet Lord” in 1969, while he, Eric Clapton, and Billy Preston were on a European tour backing Delaney & Bonnie and Friends. Harrison had been listening a lot to the chart hit “Oh, Happy Day,” a gospel recording by the Edwin Hawkins Singers. George continued to develop the composition over the next few days, including a recording session during which Billy Preston recorded “My Sweet Lord,” featuring backing vocals from the Edwin Hawkins Singers. Billy Preston’s version was issued on Apple just prior to George's. Preston's version didn’t chart, but George took his version all the way to the top, becoming a major smash over Christmas of 1970. It remains his biggest chart hit to date. Unfortunately, My Sweet Lord sounds rather similar to another song: the Chiffons' 1963 hit 'He's So Fine'. A liability trial over “My Sweet Lord” began on February 23, 1976 in Manhattan. District Judge Richard Owen was also a trained pianist who composed publicly performed operas, sometimes sung by his soprano wife, Lynn. Harrison was accused that the songs were so similar that Harrison could have only written his by copying “He’s So Fine.” In court, the Judge had both versions (Harrison and Preston’s) played, to compare with ‘He’s So Fine’. Surprisingly, the Judge found that Preston’s version included a few notes that made it more similar to He’s So Fine than Harrison’s own! This probably contributed to the Judge’s ruling: My Sweet Lord was copied from He’s So Fine. In a strange twist, the legal battle over financial compensation continued for decades, and saw Harrison opposed by his former manager, Alan Klein (who had bought the rights to He’s So Fine). The matter was finally settled in 1998. A few notes can have big consequences! Preston passed away in 2006. Intriguingly, in the years preceding his death Billy worked on a collection of Beatles cover versions, which remains unreleased………. With thanks to P.R. Lee for the idea.

Sad news from the world of music this week as we learn that Edwin Hawkins has died at the age of 74. I have to confess that this came as a surprise because I started doing the math and realized that Hawkins was in his mid-20s when "Oh Happy Day" became a hit. For whatever reason I thought he was at least twenty years older THEN. Hawkins was the founder of the Northern California State Youth Choir, and the choir recorded some songs to make a fundraiser album, which unfortunately didn't get pressed until after the event for which they needed the money. That event was a choral competition, and the NCSYC came in second, perhaps because "Oh Happy Day" wasn't one of the songs they sang. As it turns out, that wasn't one of their favorite songs! The unexpected success of "Oh Happy Day" led to the group being asked to provide the backup singing for Melanie's tribute to her experience at Woodstock, "Lay Down (Candles in the Rain)". The Edwin Hawkins Singers experienced some more success on the Gospel charts over the years, and lead singer Dorothy Morrison gained acclaim as a backup singer for several rock artists. And I'm sure you know the drill by now, but if your RSS feed is failing you somehow, there's always the player below for listening or downloading: And please feel free to leave comments here, or leave a review on your favorite podcast software.

"Holy (4 day!) Week!" (Podcast Title) Here's to Holy-4-day-Week, for Christians, working stiffs and anyone else... I wanted to do a gospel history theme for a little while, as I haven't done one in a long time... Black History Month seemed like a good time, but other ideas kept coming like popcorn, so now let's enjoy some thumping, smoking gospel sounds and find out a thing or two about gospel music, it's relationship to established hymns, and such... I also talked about Thomas Andrew "Georgia Tom" Dorsey, Chicago's Pilgrim Baptist Church, Black Nova Scotian history, and more... As usual, things started off with a few Canadian selections including a Bob Burchill album with, uh, religious over-and-undertones, which I just picked up and a surprising jam from Measha Brueggergosman on a Jesus tip. Tonight we heard... Neil Young - Everybody Knows... / Winterlong- live in Cincinnati '70 from l.p.
