I believe people-centric investors handle uncertainty better

The best investment opportunities exploit uncertainty. These are found by exploring setbacks and change. However, conventional investment training is number-centric, while I argue investing is all about people. Investors must understand companies and their customers and competitors, the motivations of other investors and, importantly, themselves. Empathy is key, yet industry convention emphasises modelling skills and cultivates auras of certainty. To better develop the skills required to analyse corporates, one can start with individuals as case studies and scale from there. If analysts can't do that, it's unlikely they can address more complex situations. - Douglas Isles, Platinum Asset Management. Earn 0.25 CE/CPD hrs on Portfolio Construction Forum

If you are not empathetic, if people don't believe that you care about them, none of the other stuff matters.”“Even in the hard times, there are things we can be grateful for. Change that mindset, reduce your anxiety. ““The 8th strategy is gratitude. Treat yourself and treat those around you with a little bit of gratitude - it lifts them up, and it lifts you up.”“Gratitude is an extremely effective way to lead your teams in business. If you lead with gratitude, you'll have more engaged, happier employees. If you're happy at work, you'll be 150% more likely to be happy in your personal life. ““We've got responsibilities as leaders to send our people home happy, virtually or physically. It's a great way to lead. It's a great way to run a business. It's an even better way to just live. “ “Trust me on this one. That when you live a life of gratitude, you're more relaxed, you're more aware, you're a better support to your spouse, your partner, your kids, your family, your community. ““When you put gratitude at the center of your life, it's just a better way to live.”“The bravest thing you can do is ask for help.”“Having anxiety is a normal human behavior for us all to have and it's okay to normalize it and to not to frown upon it in this flawless corporate landscape today.”Stay connected:Chester EltonLinkedinhttps://www.linkedin.com/in/chesterelton/The Culture Workshttps://thecultureworks.com/Podcast: Anxiety at Work with Adrian Gostick & Chester Eltonhttps://apple.co/3H5tqoVEmotional inclusionhttps://www.emotionalinclusion.com/https://www.instagram.com/emotional_inclusion/

What a year for books 2021 has been! It seems like authors, editors and publishers have all been working overtime this year to bring us some incredible new content. Books that have challenged our beliefs, calmed our anxieties and transformed our habits.  To help us with the mammoth job of summarizing the best behavioral science books from 2021, we are joined by the incredible Louise Ward, who has read over 100 books this year! Louise is the co-host of the Behavioural Science Club, a LinkedIn group established in June 2020 now with over 5,000 members. If you haven't yet joined the club, you definitely should. Today. Alongside co-host Prakash Sharma, the Behavioural Science Club interviews top authors each week about fascinating new insights in human behavior. In our discussion with Louise, we noticed some trends among our favorite books. One is that we are moving past the presumption that humans are flawed and irrational. Books such as Useful Delusions and Nudge focus instead on the evolutionary usefulness of our biases and heuristics. In addition, we loved that after reading books on heavy topics such as suffering (The Sweet Spot), racial inequalities (The Person You Mean to Be) or conspiracy theories (How to Talk to a Science Denier), we were still left with a feeling of hope and optimism. And if you're new to behavioral science and wondering how to get started or underestimating the impact you can make as an individual, there was an empowering theme to this year's books too. Dive into You Have More Influence Than You Think to recognize how you can make an impact on people, You're Invited to reflect on the connections you make in your life or Non Obvious Megatrends to start noticing more of the world around you.  We would LOVE to hear your favorite books of 2021. When did a colleague last thank you for your work? Managers generally underappreciate their employees, but more importantly, they tend to undervalue the benefits of expressing their gratitude. And how do you create a grateful work environment? Chester, along with his co-author, Adrian Gostick, have sold millions of books on how to lead with gratitude. In our conversation with Chester, he tells us how there is disparity between how well managers believe they are expressing their gratitude and how employees feel they are valued. Today I talked to Chester Elton, coauthor of Anxiety at Work: 8 Strategies to Help Teams Build Resilience, Handle Uncertainty, and Get Stuff Done (Harper Business, 2021). During my interview with Elton, the theme was really about the importance of creating a sense of psychological safety for employees, with gratitude being the other key in terms of providing social support. As to specific solution, quelling uncertainty, signaling that perfectionism can be harmful, and that a philosophy that less can be more when it comes to curbing burn-out were all keys. So too is normalizing conversations about anxiety on the job because, right now, 90% of workers don't feel like this crucial topic is something they can discuss with their boss. Finally, employees can manage to be resilient more easily when these three motivators are in place: a job role that enables making an impact, ongoing learning, and doesn't compromise the importance of family. The two lead authors have teamed up on three previous New York Times and Wall Street Journal bestsellers and have sold over 1.5 million copies worldwide. Adrian Gostick is ranked among the top 10 global gurus in leadership and organizational culture. Chester Elton is ranked number 2 among organizational culture experts globally and in the top 10 for leadership. Anthony Gostick adds a millennial perspective to this work. Gratitude Chester Elton made my day. Not just because he's a big Orange fan and a fascinating thinker. He's also a genuinely gifted listener and a reassuring soul. You'll be thankful – no pun intended – for his take on gratitude. I certainly am. Chester's most recent book (his 14th) is entitled Anxiety at Work: 8 Strategies to Help Teams Build Resilience, Handle Uncertainty, and Get Stuff Done. He was good enough to join me for a podcast conversation to talk about leadership and mental health. Along the way, we touched on what it takes to overcome anxiety – both our own anxiety and that of colleagues; on tennis phenomenon Naomi Osaka, fondue and what propels perfectionists. Ever heard of the “duck syndrome”? They seem to glide across the water so effortlessly but below the surface they're actually paddling like mad. “Everyone's anxious,” he says. “And it's OK.” There are ways to tamp this down. Be where your feet are, get to know each other's story. If you manage others, lead with gratitude, vision and purpose. Gratitude first. In the words of that football player: “Great leaders don't think less of themselves. They think of themselves less.” One particularly valuable take-away from our meandering dialogue was this: Don't mask your mental health. No one should feel alone. So if you're in a position to do so, normalize this conversation. Destigmatize! It should be emotionally safe to talk about mental health. Empathize. At our house, we take our shoes off when we come in from outside and it turns out to be a good idea. This episode begins with an explanation of what is clinging to your shoes when you walk into your house and why leaving your shoes outside is a really good idea. https://www.usatoday.com/story/news/2019/07/03/my-shoes-dirty-studies-suggest-theyre-covered-fecal-bacteria/1637780001/ How did Amazon get to be such a giant company? For many of us, Amazon has become an important presence in our lives whether it is shopping on their website, reading on your Kindle, listening to your Alexa speaker - Amazon is everywhere. How did it happen? Is Jeff Bezos a genius or was he just at the right place at the right time? One person who understands Amazon better than most is Brad Stone. Brad is senior executive editor for global technology at Bloomberg News and the author of Amazon Unbound: Jeff Bezos and the Invention of a Global Empire (https://amzn.to/3hxau9u). Listen as he gives us a peek behind the curtain at Amazon and explains how Jeff Bezos made the company so successful.  The Covid epidemic has helped to create another epidemic - workplace anxiety. A large percentage of people today are very concerned about their job security and other workplace issues caused by all the uncertainty we have experienced over the last year. That anxiety then spills over into peoples’ personal lives and can even cause health problems. What’s so interesting is that even though many people experience this anxiety, no one talks about. Chester Elton has investigated this. Chester is co-author of the book, Anxiety at Work: 8 Strategies to Help Teams Build Resilience, Handle Uncertainty, and Get Stuff Done (https://amzn.to/3huFbfy). He joins me to discuss this silent epidemic among today’s workforce and what people can do to relieve their anxiety so we can get on with life.   If you are passionate about something - anything - it is probably good for your health. Love In Action is celebrating 100 episodes! In this 100th edition of Love In Action, four specially invited mystery guests join Marcel Schwantes. They share stories of their career development and give insights about workplace rituals, anxiety and happiness at work, and COVID-19’s impact on workplace culture. Marcel welcomes Erica Keswin, who was the very first guest in the pilot episode of Love In Action. She is a speaker and strategist and has recently written a new book, Rituals Roadmap: The Human Way to Transform Everyday Routines into Workplace Magic. She shares what prompted her to write the book and why she believes it needed to be written. [2:04] Workplace rituals give us a sense of psychological safety, an opportunity to connect to purpose and values, and a performance boost. Erica distinguishes the difference between a ritual and a routine and shares the three components of a ritual. [5:09] The second mystery guest is Chester Elton, who is an advisor, executive coach, mentor, and third-time guest on Love In Action. He is the co-author of Anxiety at Work: Eight Strategies to Help Teams Build Resilience, Handle Uncertainty, and Get Stuff Done. Chester talks about anxiety and its effects in the workplace. [13:48] “Until you, as the leader, give your people permission to be vulnerable, they won’t be,” Chester claims. “The way you do that is to be vulnerable yourself. [When you say] ‘Hey, we’ve all been through a lot, and I am burnt out, I’m going to take a mental health day, and I encourage you all to do the same if you need to,’ you give your employees permission.” [19:19] Mystery guest number three is Richard Sheridan, who featured on the fifth episode of Love In Action. Richard is the CEO and Chief Storyteller at Menlo Innovations, and the author of Chief Joy Officer: How Great Leaders Elevate Human Energy and Eliminate Fear. Rich and Marcel discuss the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic. [24:54] The workplace rituals at Menlo have mostly remained the same since the pandemic, with modifications to accommodate remote work, Rich says. [27:53] Annie McKee is an advisor, executive coach, speaker, and author of How to Be Happy at Work: The Power of Purpose, Hope, and Friendship. Annie was the featured speaker on the 14th episode of Love In Action. She describes why happiness at work, especially currently, is so elusive. [31:40] According to Annie, the three key elements that must be present in order for there to be happiness at work are a sense of purpose in our work; a sense of hope and optimism about our lives and careers; and friends at work. [32:52] Marcel hosts a mini Q&A session with the four guests. Annie asks Chester how we can combat the lesser-known pandemic of stress and burnout. “I believe one of the cures [we need] is to bring civility back to the workplace and to our communities… we need to be kinder to each other,” Chester responds. [40:26] “I honestly believe this movement for a kinder, gentler, more meaningful, purpose-driven workplace is not just a better way to work; it’s a better way to live,” Chester remarks. “This isn’t something you leave at work, it's something you carry with you in every phase of your life.” [49:33] Resources Erica Keswin on LinkedIn | Twitter EricaKeswin.com  Rituals Roadmap: The Human Way to Transform Everyday Routines into Workplace Magic Chester Elton on LinkedIn | Twitter ChesterElton.com Anxiety at Work: Eight Strategies to Help Teams Build Resilience, Handle Uncertainty, and Get Stuff Done Richard Sheridan on LinkedIn | Twitter MenloInnovations.com Chief Joy Officer: How Great Leaders Elevate Human Energy and Eliminate Fear Annie McKee on LinkedIn | Twitter AnnieMcKee.com How to Be Happy at Work: The Power of Purpose, Hope, and Friendship
