We are in the sixth mass extinction phase and it's primarily driven by human activity. Globally, 1.2 million species are at risk of extinction and around 70% of the planet's ice-free land has already been altered, primarily for agricultural use. In the second episode of this five-part miniseries, we look at AI's role in sustainability and how it can help us better understand the natural world. In Europe, unsustainable farming and forestry, urban sprawl and pollution are predominantly to blame for a drastic decline in biodiversity. This latest era of extinction in the natural world also comes at a time when we are making giant leaps in an artificial realm and while AI is no silver bullet it could help us better understand how to sustainably reinvent our agriculture, farming and food systems. Protecting species is also of the utmost importance. Insects, for example, are an important piece in the biodiversity puzzle and are under threat. But AI can help us understand our insect friends and the environment they serve. In this episode we speak with Faustine Bas-Defossez, Director for Nature, Health and Environment at the European Environmental Bureau, which is the largest federation of environmental NGOs in Europe, where she discusses how AI can help understand the problems that exist within the agricultural industry and the importance of transforming our food systems to a more sustainable, circular model. Katharina Schmidt, CEO of APIC.AI, an AI startup from Germany that monitors bee populations, tells us how AI models are helping to analyse individual bee behaviours in a hive of 50,000, and what this tells us about the health of our environment. Adam Elman, Head of Sustainability, EMEA, at Google further extols the value that AI can bring to mapping key environmental change and the value of data sharing on a global scale. Rethinking the Race for Metals and Minerals

EU industrial policy for silicon chips to space technologies to electric vehicles too often seems to rely on Europeans prevailing in a global race to mine. The phrase "drill, baby, drill" applies as much to metals and minerals as oil and gas these days. But the EU's industry hawks are in denial. This is a race Europe can't ever win. The EU has relatively few metals and minerals of its own and little capacity to process the vast quantities it will require. To make matters worse, the short-term approach risks alienating the partners Europe says it needs for a sustainable energy transition. But the voices questioning the coherence and viability of the EU strategy are easily drowned out — and so that's why we tracked them down for this episode on rethinking the race to mine. MEP Mohammed Chahim says the EU's forthcoming Critical Raw Materials Act should do more to allow supplier countries and regions to get enough value from their resources to industrialise and give people better lives. Diego Marin of the European Environmental Bureau explains why reuse is one of the most important strategies for mitigating demand and reducing the negative social and environmental impacts of mining. Elle Merete Omma of the Saami Council says mining should only be permissible within environmental limits — and only with the full consent of indigenous people like the Sámi. Together they show how misaligned Europe is becoming with parts of the world like Africa, the High North and South America on which it will be relying for supplies in future — and how a more cooperative and mutually beneficial approach is needed with the Global South if Europe wants reliable access to the building blocks of its industrial future. Agriculture's impact on the environment remains one of the most controversial aspects of the Common Agricultural Policy. However, the European Union is moving progressively towards a greener, more sustainable way of farming that prioritises environmental considerations and where farmers become enablers of the green transition. Europe's citizens are increasingly demanding to know where their food comes from and how it's been produced. NGOs and ecological organisations are contributing their views to the debate and monitoring the implementation of policy in the EU's 27 Member States. Farmers, meanwhile, are stressing the need to ensure that change is steady and manageable rather than revolutionary. This latest podcast in the ‘Food for Europe' series looks at the environmental policies that emerged from the recent legislative process to reform the Common Agricultural Policy. Our guests on this programme include: Christian Wester, president of the Centrale Paysanne farmers' union in Luxembourg; Michael Pielke, acting director for sustainability in the European Commission's Directorate-General for Agriculture and Rural Development; Célia Nyssens-James from the European Environmental Bureau; Elena Ambühl from Agroecology Europe; and Benoît Biteau, a Green MEP from France.

Biologist Paul Ehrlich reflects on the 1972 MIT study, The Limits to Growth, on its 50th anniversary – including the fact that it has been refuted (poorly), ignored, and confirmed. The study was done by a team of scientists commissioned by the Club of Rome to develop a computer model to simulate the interaction of earth and human systems. It revealed that continuation of the then-current trends in population, industrialization, resource use and pollution would result in overshooting the carrying capacity of the Earth and result in a general collapse at some point in the first half of the 21st century. The study results were published in the 1972 book, The Limits to Growth, which holds the record as the top-selling environmental book. The book was authored by four system dynamics scientists (Donella Meadows, Dennis Meadows, Jørgen Randers, and William Behrens III). Gaya Herrington, whose 2020 analysis of The Limits to Growth was published in Yale's Journal of Industrial Ecology, described the study and book aptly: “the authors identified society's relentless pursuit of growth not as the solution to, but the cause of, so many of the environmental and social crises that plague humanity still today.” “....what is it about Homo sapiens that leads us to the limits as a moth to a flame.  Why don't we stop?  Why should we?  Can we?”   – Brian Czech, Executive Director of the Center for the Advancement of the Steady State Economy Read The Limits to Growth: Online Read, but includes scans of pages and downloadable charts https://collections.dartmouth.edu/teitexts/meadows/diplomatic/meadows_ltg-diplomatic.html High Quality Scan https://collections.dartmouth.edu/content/deliver/inline/meadows/pdf/meadows_ltg-001.pdf Mentioned in Our Discussion of The Limits to Growth: Limits to Growth 50th Anniversary Events - on Club of Rome website https://www.clubofrome.org/ltg50-events/ UN Event June 2-3: Stockholm+50: a healthy planet for the prosperity of all – our responsibility, our opportunity View live on the web: https://www.stockholm50.global/events/programme The Stockholm+50 Conference: What You Need to Know and Why It Matters https://unfoundation.org/blog/post/the-stockholm50-conference-what-you-need-to-know-and-why-it-matters/ Take this survey before June 2: https://www.stockholm50.global/state-planet-global-public-survey June 10 seminar: Limits to Growth +50: Can Economies Keep Growing Indefinitely on a Finite Planet? It's  Martyn Lee here and I go through every EV story so you don't have to.   Thank you to MYEV.com for helping make this show, they've built the first marketplace specifically for Electric Vehicles. It's a totally free marketplace that simplifies the buying and selling process, and help you learn about EVs along the way too.   EU PROPOSES EFFECTIVE BAN ON NEW FOSSIL-FUEL CAR SALES FROM 2035   - The European Union on Wednesday proposed an effective ban on the sale of new petrol and diesel cars as of 2035 which, as part of a broad climate package, will accelerate a switch to zero-emission electric vehicles (EVs).   - The EU executive, the European Commission, proposed a 55% cut in CO2 emissions from cars by 2030 versus 2021 levels, much higher than the existing target of a 37.5% reduction in CO2 emissions by that time.   The Commission also proposed a 100% cut in CO2 emissions by 2035, which would make it impossible to sell new fossil-fuel-powered vehicles in the 27-country bloc.   - In order to boost sales EV sales, Brussels also proposed legislation that would require countries to install public charging points along major roads with a maximum distance of 60 kilometres (37.3 miles) between them by 2025.   Original Source : https://www.msn.com/en-gb/money/other/eu-proposes-effective-ban-on-new-fossil-fuel-car-sales-from-2035/ar-AAM9g1P   EU ENTERS BATTLE OVER ITS GREEN REVOLUTION   - The myriad proposals include an effective ban on the sale of new petrol-driven cars from 2035, one of the boldest moves against gas-guzzlers ever, and one that has already raised concerns in Paris and Berlin.   - The laws will now snake their way through the EU's legislative system amid high-stakes horse-trading in the European Parliament and among the bloc's 27 member states, egged on by industry lobbyists and green activists.   - Environmentalists swiftly denounced the laws as not going far enough -- with the European Environmental Bureau decrying a plan that was "unfit and unfair" to fight climate change effectively. One major fear is resistance from the motoring public in a continent-wide replay of the "yellow vests" protests that erupted in France when the government imposed a new fuel tax in the name of defending the environment.   Original Source : https://www.msn.com/en-sg/news/world/eu-enters-battle-over-its-green-revolution/ar-AAM9lgu   EU SETS 40% RENEWABLES GOAL FOR 2030   - All Member States will contribute to this goal, and specific targets are proposed for renewable energy use in transport, heating and cooling, buildings and industry.   - President of the European Commission Ursula von der Leyen (pictured) said: "The fossil fuel economy has reached its limits. We want to leave the next generation a healthy planet as well as good jobs and growth that does not hurt our nature. The European Green Deal is our growth strategy that is moving towards a decarbonised economy. Europe was the first continent to declare to be climate neutral in 2050, and now we are the very first ones to put a concrete roadmap on the table.”   Original Source : https://renews.biz/70981/eu-sets-40-renewables-goal-for-2030   AUDI Q6 E-TRON SPOTTED TRYING OUT PORSCHE'S LATEST PLATFORM   - Audi will be launching the all-electric SUV dubbed the Q6 e-tron next year, which will slot in in between the Q4 e-tron and the large e-tron model, based on the PPE architecture of the latest Porsche Macan.   - the camouflage is as thick as ever, the lower front grille is missing altogether, and the rear end sports obviously fake taillights. Even so, it should be obvious that the Q6 takes strongly after the original e-tron. The switch to the PPE platform will enable the new SUV to have a rather long wheelbase and support charging terminals rated above 270 kW. Such features as torque vectoring, 4WS and air suspension will also be supported.   Original Source : https://www.formacar.com/en/news/view/36925.html   LG CHEM TO INVEST 10 TLN WON BY 2025 IN BATTERY MATERIALS, RENEWABLES   - LG Chem Ltd., South Korea's leading chemical firm, said Wednesday it will invest 10 trillion won (US$8.7 billion) by 2025 to expand its battery material, renewable and bio businesses.   The chemical unit under LG Group said it will speed up its transition to an eco-friendly business portfolio by expanding partnership with major industry players through mergers and acquisitions, joint ventures and strategic investments, saying over 30 projects are currently under review.   - LG Energy Solution Ltd. said it will pour 6 trillion won into the e-mobility sector to ramp up the production capacity for major lithium-ion battery materials, including cathodes, anodes and separators, to establish a stable battery supply chain.   - LG Energy, the world's No. 2 battery supplier, is a major supplier of batteries for nearly all major global carmakers, including Tesla, General Motors, Ford, Renault, Volvo and Volkswagen, as well as South Korea's two largest automakers -- Hyundai Motor and Kia Corp.   Original Source : https://en.yna.co.kr/view/AEN20210714002951320   USPS SUED OVER ELECTRIC VEHICLE CONTRACT FOR DELIVERY TRUCKS   - An electric vehicle manufacturer is suing the U.S. Postal Service for what it alleges was bias in picking a company to make its latest fleet of delivery trucks.     Congressional Democrats are skeptical of the contract, too. Though USPS has cast the new vehicles as a "major step forward" toward a greener future, some Democrats are saying the plan doesn't go far enough.   - Postmaster General Louis DeJoy announced plans to finally replace the U.S. Postal Service's fleet of gas guzzling, unairconditioned and fire-prone delivery trucks in February with great fanfare.   - According to a lawsuit filed by electric vehicle maker Workhorse, which lost the contract — worth as much as $3.1 billion — Oshkosh has never made a electric delivery vehicle.   Original Source : https://www.npr.org/2021/07/12/1015371368/company-that-wasnt-picked-to-make-mail-trucks-is-suing-the-u-s-postal-service&t=1626262829134   GM CONFIRMS HIRING SUPPLIER TO BUILD FIRST ELECTRIC VANS FOR BRIGHTDROP   - General Motors will use a German parts supplier to initially build its new electric commercial van for its BrightDrop startup. The move will keep GM's BrightDrop, a commercial van and software business, on schedule to deliver the EV600 vans to its initial customer, Fedex.   - GM plans to make the EV600s at its CAMI Assembly in Ontario, Canada, starting around November 2022. At that time, the plant will have been converted to a dedicated EV plant for "long-term large-scale BrightDrop EV600 production," Katz said.   Original Source : https://eu.freep.com/story/money/cars/general-motors/2021/07/13/gm-confirms-hiring-supplier-build-first-electric-vans-brightdrop/7951140002/   SECOND-HAND TESLAS CATCH ON AMONG CHINA'S YOUNG MOTORISTS   Original Source : https://www.scmp.com/business/companies/article/3140970/second-hand-teslas-hot-commodity-among-chinas-young-motorists   WHY DOES THE TESLA MODEL Y EUROPEAN RELEASE EXCITE SO MANY PEOPLE? Crystal is an American storyteller, photographer and filmmaker. She studied commercial photography in graduate school and then managed shoots and photo archiving for an entertainment production company that owned the now-defunct Barnum & Bailey Circus. If someone needed a decades-old picture of a certain clown, she tracked it down. Crystal left that job to launch her freelance career for clients including UNICEF, Save the Children and the European Environmental Bureau. Full disclosure: Crystal is my very good friend! We met several years ago when we both lived in Rwanda. Since then, we've worked on projects together and co-edited the website NGO Storytelling for over five years.
