Shoot us a Text.Episode #1017: Today we talk Polestar's bold Tesla takedown with a $20K lease play, Jeff Bezos' stealthy new EV startup with big aspirations, and GM's pause on BrightDrop van production despite rock-bottom pricing.Show Notes with links:A secretive EV startup based in Michigan is gaining attention fast. Funded by Jeff Bezos and stocked with talent from Ford, GM, Harley-Davidson, and Stellantis, Slate Auto is taking a bold swing at building a $25,000 electric pickup.Founded in 2022 via Re:Build Manufacturing, Slate has already raised over $100 million and closed a Series B round. The company is targeting late 2026 production near Indianapolis, building a minimalist two-seat pickup truck.Slate's strategy flips the usual EV script—start affordable and scale with accessories, not luxury trims. Its product roadmap includes personalization, merchandise, and “Slate University” for customer-led upgrades.“We built it. You make it,” is the company's trademarked mission to empower buyers with customization.Polestar is going big to lure Tesla owners, offering a jaw-dropping $20,000 incentive for drivers to lease the new Polestar 3 luxury EV crossover—an offer good through the end of March. The deal includes a $15,000 “Clean Vehicle Incentive” plus a $5,000 “Conquest Bonus” for current Tesla owners. The offer applies only to leased 2025 Polestar 3s; delivery must be taken from existing inventory before March 31.The Polestar 3 is sleek, spacious, and built in South Carolina with top-tier tech and sustainable materials.Performance specs include up to 517 hp, a 0-60 time of 4.5 seconds, and up to 350 miles of range. The Polestar offer says: “The Polestar 3 offers more comfort, tech, and style than the aging Model Y,”GM is hitting the brakes on production of its all-electric BrightDrop van at its Ontario facility due to soft demand—despite deep discounts and compelling incentives that still make it a standout EV deal.Production at CAMI Assembly will pause April 14 and remain idle until October 2025 for retooling. The move affects nearly 500 workers and drops the plant to a single shift post-relaunch.Only 274 BrightDrop vans were sold in Q1 2025—a modest 7% increase year-over-year.The announcement follows market jitters caused by Trump's tariff threats and broader EV hesitations.“It's a crushing blow to hundreds of working families in Ingersoll,” said Unifor President Lana Payne.Join hosts Paul J Daly and Kyle Mountsier as they connect the dots across car dealerships, retail trends, emerging tech like AI, and cultural shifts—bringing clarity, speed, and people-first insight to automotive leaders navigating a rapidly changing industry.Get the Daily Push Back email at https://www.asotu.com/ JOIN the conversation on LinkedIn at: https://www.linkedin.com/company/asotu/

Welcome to Tuesday as we talk about franchise dealership count going down while throughput goes up on the other side of the seesaw. We also talk about Dealer complaints about the use of AI in credit leading to misquotes on payments, as well as a follow up on the dealer-purchased Cybertruck from last week.In 2023, the U.S. saw a slight decrease in new-car dealerships but a notable rise in sales per franchise underscoring the balance between efficiency and high demand. Note: The count excludes excludes BrightDrop, Fisker, Karma, Lucid, Rivian, Tesla and VinFast The U.S. new-car dealership count dropped to 18,133 in 2023, while average sales per franchise surged 14% to 483 vehicles, up from 425General Motors and Ford led the charge in reducing franchise counts, contributing to an overall 3.6% decrease in franchises.Notably, Buick dealerships nearly halved from 1958 to 1052, but doubled their throughput to 111 Lincoln cut 100 of its US franchises bringing the total count to 535 and has plans to cut 100 more this yearHyundai and Genesis are expanding their standalone presence, signaling a shift towards more brand-exclusive dealerships."We are well on our way to 75 percent-plus of our network upgrading their facilities by 2025," says Hyundai spokesperson, highlighting a focus on modernization and brand distinction.A staggering 90% of dealers and lenders report frustrations with AI in digital lending solutions, claiming it often results in inaccurate online payment quotes, a poll by eLEND Solutions reveals. The majority feel that AI's approach to evaluating consumer creditworthiness doesn't align with the reality of customer negotiations, leading to mismatched payment terms."Lenders aren't even pricing to those [rate sheet] tiers any longer," eLEND CEO Pete MacInnis told Automotive News. "Some are, but most of your major ones have this dynamic pricing model" tied to the unique customer and their vehicle choice.Despite AI's sophistication, 76% of initial digital retail quotes reportedly fail to match final lender decisions, highlighting a disconnect between technology and practical application. The Porsche dealer that turned heads last week by acquiring a Cybertruck for $244,000, at a Manheim auction now has it listed for $289,999Porsche South Orlando acquires a Cybertruck for $244,000 from seller “givemethevin” and, now has it listed for $289,999, defying Tesla's resale restrictions which threaten a $50,000 penalty for early resales, the truck has traveled through multiple owners, each turning a profit. The Cybertruck, with under 100 miles on the odometer"Tesla's threat...may have actually helped to inflate the price of the trucks," suggests John Clay Wolfe, CEO of givemethevin.com, pointing to a temporary market anomaly.Hosts: Paul J Daly and Kyle MountsierGet the Daily Push Back email at https://www.asotu.com/ JOIN the conversation on LinkedIn at: https://www.linkedin.com/company/asotu/ Read our most recent email at: https://www.asotu.com/media/push-back-email ASOTU Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/automotivestateoftheunion

It's the last Friday before the big week and we're talking about some BTS info from the UAW side of labor talks. We also give a rounded look at EV news as we ramp up to our big week of experts and news releases next week at ASOTU CON. According to leaked messages from a top aide to UAW President, Shawn Fain, suggest the union aims to damage Detroit 3 automakers' reputations to "keep them wounded for months." Stellantis described UAW Communications Director Jonah Furman's comments as "incredibly disturbing." Ford's Mark Truby said they're "disappointing, to say the least," emphasizing their commitment to bargaining in good faith. General Motors expressed concerns about the UAW's intention to cause prolonged disruption. In the leaked messages, Furman explained the union's approach, "They can basically price in an all-out strike... But if we can keep them wounded for months they don't know what to do... Plus we're breaking pattern and they're bargaining against each other for the first time in 70 years."Previously, the UAW has been accusing the OEMs of bargaining in bad faithThere is also talk about the proposal of the 32 hour work week, which helped to elicit great support from UAW members, never being considered as an actual goal, but more about bringing up a conversation about work-life balanceFain is scheduled to go on FB live today at 10am to announce the next wave of strike targets if significant progress hasn't been madeEV Update:According to a Nikkei newspaper report, Toyota Motor Corp. is set to accelerate its EV production, aiming for an annual output of over 600,000 EVs by 2025 marking a significant uptick from their sales of fewer than 25,000 EVs worldwide last year. The automaker's previously stated objectives are to sell 1.5 million EVs every year by 2026 and to achieve sales of 3.5 million (roughly a third of its current global volume) by 2030.Fleet management and rental company, Ryder, has begun deploying the first of its 4,000 BrightDrop electric vans across four key US cities. These cities include Santa Fe Springs and Hayward in California, Dallas-Fort Worth in Texas, and Long Island City in New York. A new study by Recurrent analyzes data from over 12,500 Tesla vehicles in the US, and suggests that colder climates may be beneficial for the longevity of Tesla EV battery packs.Hosts: Paul J Daly and Kyle MountsierGet the Daily Push Back email at https://www.asotu.com/ JOIN the conversation on LinkedIn at: https://www.linkedin.com/company/asotu/ Read our most recent email at: https://www.asotu.com/media/push-back-email ASOTU Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/automotivestateoftheunion

Stefan Heck, Founder & CEO, NAUTO joined Grayson Brulte on The Road to Autonomy podcast to discuss how NAUTO's predictive-AI software is helping to reduce distracted driving. The conversation begins with Stefan discussing what he saw in the market when he founded the company in 2015 and what he learned from collision data. There is nothing as dangerous as distracted driving. – Stefan HeckAccording to NAUTO's propriety data, on average, a commercial driver is distracted 7 times per driving hour, equating to roughly every 9 minutes. To help mitigate the distracted driving risk and reduce potential crashes, the NAUTO system monitors drivers behaviors and offers audio cues to gain the drivers attention. With-in the first week of using NAUTO, about 80% of all the distractions and nearly 100% of the severe long distractions are eliminated. – Stefan HeckThe system acts as a virtual coach that keeps drivers engaged while driving, giving them feedback in real-time on their driving behavior. The feedback comes in the form of a virtual coach that inspires change. When a driver realizes that their behavior as dangerous, they are more likely to change that behavior. In the data NAUTO has seen 80% to 90% of the drivers drop their risk behavior based on feedback from the virtual coach. This virtual coach, predictive-AI system is able to identify potential dangerous scenarios because it has been trained on 3 billion miles with over 200,000 high-risk driving events. The accuracy of all of these interventions is really important. There's nothing as upsetting as telling you, hey there is a bicycle here and there is no bicycle. Or you are tailgating and there is nobody in front of you. So, we spent years making sure that all of detectors, all of our interventions are super accurate. – Stefan HeckIf the system is not accurate, drivers will begin to distrust the system and figure out a way to turn it off. This behavior is common amongst individuals who own vehicles with lane-keep assist. They simply turn it off because it's inaccurate and annoying. A system that is accurate is a system that works and does it job to help avoid dangers driving scenarios. NAUTO's system caught the attention of Stellantis, as the company invested with a plan to offer the system in their commercial fleet vehicles. At first the system will use the NAUTO hardware and in the future, the software system will run natively on the vehicles by leveraging the on-board sensors without the NAUTO hardware. In addition to Stellantis, NAUTO has a partnership with Brightdrop where fleets can order can order the system pre-installed directly from the factory today. As robo-taxis scale around the world, the NAUTO system could be used for occupant detection and safety routing applications. As autonomy grows, NAUTO's market grows. Wrapping up the conversation, Stefan shares his opinion on the future of AI as it relates to mobility.Follow The Road To Autonomy on Apple PodcastsFollow The Road To Autonomy on LinkedInFollow The Road To Autonomy on TwitterRecorded on Wednesday, July 5, 2023See Privacy Policy at https://art19.com/privacy and California Privacy Notice at https://art19.com/privacy#do-not-sell-my-info.

Travis Katz is the CEO of BrightDrop, a subsidiary of GM that makes electrified delivery vans with an eye toward rebooting all of how delivery works. BrightDrop has pretty big partnerships already, with names like FedEx, Verizon, and Walmart committed to its Zevo 600 van, and it's got big ideas for making the steps from the van to your door more efficient as well with something called e-carts. Katz says there's a huge demand for delivery especially as online shopping keeps getting bigger, but the transportation network is at capacity, and you can't just keep throwing more trucks and drivers on the road, or making city streets wider. His plan is to redesign the entire system to make it more efficient. So I wanted to know how he's attacking that problem and making it manageable, all while getting buy-in from customers that won't really accept delays or increased costs. BrightDrop is a wholly owned subsidiary of General Motors, so I also wanted to know how that works, what he gets from being part of the big company, and which parts slow him down. It's a magnificent Monday to be in the car business as we warm up those turkey ovens and those Black Friday deals. Today we discuss private sector buy/sells, GM's Bright Drop reaching $1B, and Domino's EV delivery strategy. The Dealership buy/sell transaction count reached 178 through the first half of 2022 which is a 19% jump from 150 in 2021 yet the total number of stores which traded hands was down. Private acquisitions drove the purchasing momentum as the publics' activity was down by almost halfAlan Haig, president of Haig Partners, said while the publics' acquisition activity remains high compared with the period before the coronavirus pandemic, it is below last year's first-half pace.Haig and others expect the publics to continue purchasing given their aggressive revenue targets.Record blue-sky is also a factor although earnings have seemed to plateau according to HaigDealers and firms expect acquisition activity to pick up as we approach end of year "We're going to continue to see a lot of activity by private buyers," Haig said. "They have more cash flow than they've ever had in their careers."GM's last mile delivery company, BrightDrop shared that it is poised to reach $1B in sales in the year 2023 which would make it one of the fastest companies in history to ever reach that figure within 3 years. Has over 25,000 reservations and letters of intent from Walmart, Hertz, FedEx and Verizon — and already has vehicles on the road making deliveries todayIn Sept the released their Trace Grocery E-cart and early adopter Kroger to deploy the boxy carts that can carry 350lbs of groceries w/temp controls that keep food safe for up to 4 hours and can be brought outside directly for customer pickup after digital verification“We're a tech startup with a subscription-based product offering that's backed by a global powerhouse — this puts us in a league of our own,” said Travis Katz, BrightDrop president and CEO.BrightDrop is tracking $10B in sales at a 20% margin by 2030Domino's Pizza is investing in a fleet of new Chevy Bolt's in an effort to add delivery drivers to its ranks, cut emissions, save money, and of course, deliver more hot pizzas. Welcome back to TFL Talkin' Trucks! In this episode, Andre and Nathan discuss what it's like to live with a new 2022 Ford E-Transit all-electric full-size van and how it is on a road trip and in city driving.
Damien Scott, Director of EV Product Strategy, BrightDrop joined Grayson Brulte on The Road To Autonomy Podcast to discuss energy and the role that managing energy usage in real-time will play in a future with electrified transportation. The conversation begins with Damien discussing growing up in Botswana, flying around the country with his father who was a medical doctor and why his parents made the decision to homeschool him and his sisters. One of the amazing things about living on a remote game farm in Botswana is you have to become incredibly practical fixing vehicles, borehole pumps, electricity frequently goes down, and so there is a lot of direct exposure to the fundamental things that we use in our life. – Damien ScottHaving been exposed to medicine and aviation at an early age, Damien made the decision to go into technology after being inspired by science fiction. He wanted to work on technology that would bring about some of the more positive visions of the future that involved energy and transportation. While living on the farm, Damien's father installed their first solar powered borehole pump, which reduced the families dependence on diesel. This was the first time that Damien was exposed to solar and the true benefits of the technology. Having experienced solar energy in a remote part of the world first-hand, Damien discusses the opportunities that he sees for solar energy. The market for renewable energy such as solar continues to grow and is projected to make up 27% of the world's energy by 2050, coal still accounts for 27% of the world's primary energy, roughly the same level as 50 years ago. In 50 years from now, how will the world's mix of energy sources change? This is the big question. I think it boils down to a set of actions that technology companies will take, the policy makers will take. It's not determined what this mix is going to look like, it is really ours as a species to make these decisions. – Damien ScottEnergy demand is growing globally and The US Energy Information Administration is projecting that the global energy demand will grow by 47% by 2050. To be prepared to handle this increase in demand, we have to start paying attention to energy demand and its impact on the energy grid. One of the first things to look at is, can we optimize what we have already and take the assets that we have — the electricity grid we have today and the one that we expect to evolve in the short to medium term and just use it more efficiently. – Damien ScottWhat happens when you electrify large fleets of commercial vehicles? What will their impact be on the energy grid? How do you manage the energy usage. This is the problem that Marain set out to fix and they are now doing it as part of BrightDrop. In order to create the future that we want, we have to simulate it. It's really expensive to make the wrong decisions in our infrastructure buildout with the electricity grid. – Damien ScottThis approach will ensure that commercial EV fleet owners are properly prepared and not caught flat footed as they scale up their global electric vehicle fleets. As we are still early in the adoption of electric vehicles, the future is yet to be written in terms of how fleet operators will manage their fleets. Wrapping up the conversation, Damien shares his thoughts on the future of global energy consumption. The next decade leading up to 2030 is going to be the most important for energy and transportation across all areas, technology, business models, policy. – Damien ScottFollow The Road To Autonomy on Apple PodcastsFollow The Road To Autonomy on TwitterRecorded on Tuesday August 9, 2022See Privacy Policy at https://art19.com/privacy and California Privacy Notice at https://art19.com/privacy#do-not-sell-my-info.
