He outlined the Shia theological stance towards Yazid's status in the hereafter and justifications for why it is permitted to curse him. The issue of qirtas, refers to the incident at the end of the Prophet's life when he asked his companions for a pen and paper to record something but was refused, which has been an ideological dividing line for the Shia and the Ahl al-Sunna. He reasoned that the issue of succession is so great that the Prophet would have insisted because it would have been his duty to convey the message. However, according to the narration when the Prophet asked for a pen and paper Umar ibn Khattab said that he was unwell and that the book of God is sufficient guidance. When his companions began arguing the Prophet said it was not appropriate for them to raise their voices and ordered them to leave. If he wanted to write something so fundamental to the wellbeing of the Muslim Ummah, he would have corrected Umar ibn Khattab as he had done on previous occasions and persisted. Thus, the Prophet wanted to convey something personal, and not something which had been revealed to him regarding the leadership after him. The final revelation of the verses of the Quran which occurred a few days prior to the incident stating, ‘We have not missed anything from the book', supports this view and provide a justification as to why Umar ibn Khattab insisted that the book of God is enough. Event Date: 14th September 2019 Shaykh Mahmood using the Quran and hadith critiqued arguments used to justify the actions of the companions who denied the Prophet's request in writing something down on his deathbed. He then went on to conclude, evidenced by hadith, that the Prophet had indeed wanted to write a will and that the will was in regard to his successor being Ali. (part 3 of 4)

Event Date: 14th September 2019 Amongst the points raised in the discussion was that companions not following the Prophet's commands in providing him with paper could be taken as a failure in his mission, and thus should be dismissed as a possibility. However, this was rejected as a weak argument as the disobedience of a people is not an indication of success or indeed a failure of prophets or for that matter God. Of the more interesting points raised during the discussion was the acknowledgement by certain Sunni scholars that the Prophet had indeed wanted Ali to be the successor, however since this was a communal matter, it was up to the community to decide ultimately i.e., the Prophet's words were just advice and not binding. Event Date: 1st of April 2017 Shaykh Arif's presentation saw him divide the fundamental beliefs into two parts; - the primary (usūl awwaliyya) beliefs, subscribing to which one can be considered a Muslim, - and secondary beliefs (usūl thānawiyya), belief in which would consider one a Shia. The primary being belief in the oneness of God (tawḥīd), Prophethood (nubuwwa) and the day of judgement (qiyāma) whilst the secondary being belief in the justice of God (ʿAdl) and in the Imams (Imāma). Event Date: 1st of April 2017 At the core of Shaykh Abdul Hadi Al-Omri's presentation regarding the fundamental articles were the belief in one God (tawḥīd) and prophethood of Muhammad (SAW) (nubuwwa). This is rooted in a lengthy narration in which the Prophet is asked what islām and īmān are, to which he replies Islam is; a) belief in one God b) belief in the prophethood of Muhammad c) establishing prayers d) paying the zakat e) fasting in Ramadhan and f) carrying out the Hajj whilst Iman is; a) belief in Allah b) his angels c) his messengers d) books e) day of judgement f) predestination. Building on this as his framework and considering Islam and Iman as being synonymous, he cited several verses to establish belief in all the above as being fundamental in being considered a Muslim. Event Date: 28th January 2017 Of the questions raised in the discussion was the narration found in Shia hadith works “all the companions committed apostasy (irtadū) except three” to which Sayed Qazwini responded by rejecting this narration based on the lack of chain, in addition to it being logically impossible that only four companions out of the thousands remained on the faith. It was also evident from the discussions that the Shia narrative is one that is over-critical to the Sahaba perhaps due to a reactionary outlook to the Sunni narrative. . Some Shia scholars did however raise that, although the ṣahāba need to be seen in terms of their human capacity, there is a general lack of knowledge amongst the lay Shia about the various companions of the Prophet and their services to Islam. The notion of ʿadūl (trustworthiness) of the companions was also further discussed where it became evident that the term used in the presentation was in reference to the moral integrity of the companions whilst the technical term in this discussion is about the trustworthiness of the companions in narrating hadith (See CIMS discussion on this from Sunni perspective - Link below). This led naturally to the topic of cursing the companions – to which the Shia and Sunni scholars present agreed that cursing and abusing of the companions is categorically wrong, and whilst critiquing the companions' actions does not amount to cursing, it should only ever be done in a respectful manner. Good morning, RVA! It’s 66 °F, and highs today look like they’ll top out in the low 80s. It’s raining now, it’ll probably rain for the rest of the morning, but Andrew Freiden says today the sun returns! Maybe we’ll even see some more of it over the weekend? 'Twould be nice.Water coolerAs of this morning, the Virginia Department of Health reports 1,229 new positive cases of the coronavirus in the Commonwealthand 25 new deaths as a result of the virus. VDH reports 103 new cases in and around Richmond (Chesterfield: 32, Henrico: 18, and Richmond: 53). Since this pandemic began, 163 people have died in the Richmond region. To be honest, the data in my personal spreadsheet no longer looks anything like the data on the VDH website, which has me both bummed and frustrated. Check out this graph from VDH of Number of Cases by Event Date and compare it to my graph of Number of Positive Cases by Date Reported. These are two different graphs that show two different things, for sure. But, still, every day reporters—and hobbyists like myself—are all “Welp, 1,229 new cases reported today, that’s the most ever in a single day. Yikes.” Meanwhile the VDH graph says, “Nah, that was back on May 16th and today doesn’t look so bad.” I’m not smart enough to know what’s going, but I wonder if its due to the concept of completeness. I figured this was a thing but just found out there’s a specific word for it yesterday via Patron Casey on the GMRVA Slack (which is open to all patrons!).Mayor Stoney announced that Richmond will use some of that federal CARES Act money to support folks who test positive for COVID-19 and need a safe place to isolate. I’m pretty excited about this as it’s one thing for officials shout at people to isolate if they get sick, but it’s an entirely different thing to actually help sick folks who don’t have the space or opportunity to do that.It’s Friday, and the Virginia Employment Commission has updated its weekly unemployment insurance claims numbers. 44,699 new people filed for unemployment insurance in the week ending May 16th—this is down 7,440 claimants from last week. The horrifying—but mathematically beautiful—graph of both new and continued claimants continued its previous trends, with the total number of folks filing for unemployment insurance increasing. However, the rate of that increase has slowed, which seems good. It’s still shocking to look at these numbers in the context of this same week form last year, a week that saw “only” 18,177 continued claims. That’s 22 times more claims! VEC also provides a breakdown of claims by locality. For the week ending in May 16th, Richmond saw 18,875 total claimants. That’s two and a half Siegel Centers of people.Colleen Curran at the Richmond Times-Dispatch talked with some music venues who are basically stuck in eternal pandemic purgatory until…who even knows when. Honestly, it’s nice? refreshing?—neither of these are the right word—to read something about the issues facing any industry other than the restaurant industry. I love restaurants, but, I’m thankful to expand the context of our conversations about how COVID-19 is impacting local businesses. As The Broadberry’s Lucas Fritz says, “We have zero income. The Broadberry is completely closed with no revenue coming in. We still have to pay rent, utilities and insurance fees on a monthly basis. We’ve been burning through cash since March.”Roberto Roldan at VPM sat down for an interview with John Moeser and Rutledge Dennis to talk about Richmond’s annexation of Chesterfield. My contractual obligation to always link to annexation stories aside, I know about this stuff and am still shocked every time I read about it. Here’s Moeser: “What the Richmond oligarchy decided to do was to simply reduce the black population. And the way to do that was to annex thousands, tens of thousands of white people from the adjoining County, Chesterfield County. In fact, when people learn the story about the annexation, they are amazed. They are shocked. I mean, the number of secret meetings that were held.” Secret meetings! Rebecca Riley (Centre of Excellence, NIESR) XVI IDP Lecture – Organised by SOAS Economics Research Cluster on Industrial Development and Policy. Many advanced economies have seen a slowdown in productivity growth since the middle of the 2000s. In the UK this slowdown has been particularly stark. A decade on from the global financial crisis UK productivity levels are little different to what they were at their peak in 2007. In this paper we use new data to provide a detailed account of the weakness of UK productivity, documenting patterns across industry sectors and across the sources of growth. Productivity weakness has been pervasive across many UK industries. But, as we move further away from the crisis, the slowdown in aggregate productivity growth is increasingly apparent in particular pockets of the economy. We also discuss the likely implications of measurement error for the interpretation of our findings. Rebecca Riley is director of the Economic Statistics Centre of Excellence (ESCoE) at the National Institute of Economic and Social Research. Liliann Fischer (University of Kent), Ben Fine (SOAS), Alfredo Saad Filho (SOAS) Rethinking Economics takes action: The Open Economics Forum and SOAS Department of Economics will be hosting a book launch for the recently published reader "Rethinking Economics - An Introduction to Pluralist Economics". The book is among the very first to provide a concise overview of different schools of thought in economics. The book launch will feature one of the editors, Liliann Fischer (University of Kent), as well as Professors Ben Fine (Economics, SOAS) and Alfredo Saad Filho (Development Studies, SOAS) who contributed with a chapter on 'Marxist Economics'. Speaker biographies: Liliann Fischer has an International Relations background, recently graduating from her first Master’s degree in Global Conflict and Peace Processes at the University of Aberdeen and is now studying for a second degree in Political Psychology at the University of Kent, UK. Ben Fine is Professor of Economics at the SOAS Department of Economics. He is the author of a number of works in the broad tradition of Marxist economics, and has made contributions on economic imperialism and social capital. He took his doctorate in economics at the London School of Economics, under the supervision of Amartya Sen. Alfredo Saad Filho is a Professor of Political Economy at the SOAS Department of Development Studies. Alfredo has degrees in Economics from the Universities of Brasilia (Brazil) and London (SOAS). He has worked in universities and research institutions based in Brazil, Canada, Japan, Mozambique, Switzerland and the UK, and was a senior economic affairs officer at the United Nations Conference on Trade and Development (UNCTAD). His research interests include the political economy of development, industrial policy, neoliberalism, alternative economic policies, Latin American political and economic development, inflation and stabilisation, and the labour theory of value and its applications. Hannah Bargawi (SOAS), Hassan Hakimian (SOAS), Susan Joekes (Independent Researcher) and Massoud Karshenas (SOAS) Researchers at SOAS are leading a Global Challenges Research Fund (GCRF) that is intended on identifying innovative disciplinary and inter-disciplinary research agendas on female labour and dynamics of inequality in developing countries. This seminar is an opportunity to find out more about the network, its activities and avenues for future research. This network is concerned with gender and dynamics of inequality in three world regions, with specific focus on (a) the interplay of economic structures, policies and institutions as the determinants of women’s access to employment and (b) the patterns of women’s economic participation as key drivers of inequality. Speaker biographies: Dr. Hannah Bargawi is co-Investigator of the Dynamics of Gender Inequality in the Middle East, North Africa and South Asia network. She is a Senior Lecturer in the Department of Economics at SOAS, University of London. Her recent research focuses on issues of gender and work in the Middle East and in Europe and she recently co-edited a volume entitled Economics and Austerity in Europe: Gendered Impacts and Sustainable Alternatives, published by Routledge. Dr. Hassan Hakimian is co-Investigator of the Dynamics of Gender Inequality in the Middle East, North Africa and South Asia network and is the director of the London Middle East Institute and Reader in the Economics Department at SOAS University of London. He was previously an Associate Dean at Cass Business School, London. His research focuses on MENA economies, specifically human resources and demographic change, labour markets, inclusive growth and the economics of Arab uprisings. Susan Joekes is an independent researcher with special interest in trade, industrial organization and the economics of gender relations in the Middle East and North Africa. She has degrees in Persian with Arabic from Edinburgh University and in development economics from Oxford University, UK. Before becoming affiliated with SOAS, as a member of ESRC GRCF research network, she was a Senior Visiting Fellow of the LSE Gender Institute, 2016-2017. She was for many years a Fellow of the Institute of Development Studies, Sussex, UK and also staff economist at the International Centre for Research on Women (ICRW), in Washington DC. Rebecca Riley (Centre of Excellence, NIESR) Many advanced economies have seen a slowdown in productivity growth since the middle of the 2000s. In the UK this slowdown has been particularly stark. A decade on from the global financial crisis UK productivity levels are little different to what they were at their peak in 2007. In this paper we use new data to provide a detailed account of the weakness of UK productivity, documenting patterns across industry sectors and across the sources of growth. Productivity weakness has been pervasive across many UK industries. But, as we move further away from the crisis, the slowdown in aggregate productivity growth is increasingly apparent in particular pockets of the economy. We also discuss the likely implications of measurement error for the interpretation of our findings. Lorenzo Pellegrini (Erasmus University Rotterdam) To reduce the risk of catastrophic climate change a large share of existing fossil fuels reserves has to be kept underground. This basic fact can be challenged only by climate skeptics and technological optimists. The former are in denial of climate change and/or of its anthropogenic root, the latter believe in the massive development of (yet non-existent) capture and storage technologies within the next few decades. Notwithstanding the relatively uncontroversial nature of the fact that a large share of fossil fuel reserves are ‘unburnable’, little progress has been made to identify the specific reserves that should be left untapped and the way the costs of the policy should be met. This presentation is going to explore the methods to develop spatially-explicit and just proposals for specifying the reserves that need to be labelled unburnable and the way these proposals intersect and can contribute to global environmental justice. At the same time, they also face pressure to trust recipient governments to disburse project funds themselves, so as to build capacity in developing countries. This paper assesses under which conditions donor regulations are successful in controlling corruption in aid spent by national governments through procurement tenders. By mining procurement contracts funded by the World Bank in 100+ countries over the period 1998-2008 for corruption “red flags”, we create a dataset that provides an unprecedentedly accurate picture of corruption risks in the spending of aid across the developing world. Through propensity score matching and regression analysis, we find that the 2003 World Bank regulatory reform aiming to control corruption was effective in reducing corruption risks: lowering single bidding on competitive markets by 3.8-4.3 percentage points. This effect is greater in countries with low state capacity. Speaker biography: Dr Liz David-Barrett is Deputy Director of the University of Sussex Centre for the Study of Corruption and Senior Lecturer in Politics. Her work focuses on the government-business interface, particularly on corruption risks arising from this relationship, including bribery, favouritism in procurement, lobbying and the revolving door. She also researches anti-corruption tools and is particularly interested in how international tools influence national politics. Dr Mihály Fazekas has been pioneering the use of ‘Big Data’ for social sciences research, especially for measuring and analysing corruption and administrative quality across Europe. He uses mixed research methods while working in interdisciplinary teams of IT specialists, practitioners, and social scientists in order to collect, structure, and clean large administrative datasets generated by governments. One of his primary areas of work is public procurement and high-level corruption. Deborah Johnston (SOAS). In her presentation at the Food and Nutrition in Development Summer School, Deborah Johnston explored the definitions and literature around famine. She discusses the causes of famine and how famines can be predicted and prevented. Dr Deborah Johnston is Pro Director Learning & Teaching at SOAS University of London and Reader at the Department of Economics. The Food and Nutrition in Development Summer School at SOAS University of London is designed for students, academics and practitioners interested in gaining knowledge on food, nutrition and health in low and middle-income countries (LMICs). The course will cover three areas: global food, nutrition and health-related challenges facing low and middle-income countries; key aspects of changing food systems and the politics of food; responses to hunger, malnutrition and poor health. The course will offer theoretical aspects combined with case studies and methods to start approaching complex aspects of food systems, malnutrition, and heath in LMICs. It is aimed at providing knowledge on fundamental debates in these areas of study and policy making and, crucially, at stimulating critical thinking on these issues. The contents draw on a range of disciplinary perspectives, such as political economy, nutritional science, and anthropology. The course does not require students to have prior qualifications in economics. After a long history of exploitation, violent conflicts, and economic turmoils, it has finally seen a decade of improved economic growth and greater political stability. Once written off as a continent uniquely suffering from structural impediments to economic growth and development there is now widespread optimism about the future of the continent. The African countries need to start to think seriously about – and to implement – ways to upgrade their commodity sectors and, more importantly, promote the development of higher-productivity sectors, especially manufacturing but also some high-end services.
