IR Department's managing director Jane Lowe talked with Proactive's Tylah Tully about her nomination for the Women in Finance Awards 2024, set for Friday, November 15, at the Hyatt Regency in Sydney. Lowe shared her extensive background in investor relations and capital markets, spanning over two decades. After founding the IR Department in 2014, her goal was to address the support gaps faced by smaller ASX-listed companies. “The smaller guys really could benefit from the sort of consulting work that I was able to offer,” she said. Lowe also emphasized the role of innovation and diversity in investor relations. She noted the importance of inclusivity within a traditionally male-dominated sector, stating that “a good balance on board... should help us to make more balanced decisions.” Beyond gender diversity, she highlighted her company's focus on Environmental, Social and Governance (ESG) standards and ongoing client achievements, including successful IPOs and capital raises. Lowe's nomination in the Small Business Advisor category aligns with her firm's mission to bolster small businesses, which make up 97% of Australia's business sector. Her dedication is evident in her ambitions for the IR Department's future, especially in enhancing ESG consultancy. #ProactiveInvestors #IRDepartment #ASX #WomenInFinance #InvestorRelations #JaneLoy #FinanceAwards #ASX #MicroCapSupport #ESG #CorporateStrategy #CapitalMarkets #ProactiveInvestors

Talking to Maja, Ms Kuszyk spoke about how technology providers can ease the advice burden. “2023 is going to be the year of technology where a lot of firms are going to sit down and actually look at this.” “I think it's important to actually understand what is out there and then make your own judgement on what you think will suit your business best.” Ms Kuszyk added that she believes advisers will be turning their focus on mobile apps. “Out of the last hundred thousand client logins [on myprosperity], almost 70 per cent of them were through the mobile app, not through the desktop browser. Whereas four years ago, that was 40 per cent. So you can imagine in another two years what that percentage is going to be.” Looking further into the future, Ms Kuszyk said “technology is only as good as the adviser actually uses it”. Tune in to hear more, including Ms Kuszyk's message for advisers looking to exit the industry.

Steve W has been looking very hard at Stanley Druckenmiller's 13F and has built a game about his holdings! Its a tough one! Darting onwards we're heading into the first category - Best Savings Account. With this we're thinking specifically about the best place for your emergency fund - there was a clear winner until last month and now it's all up in the air! Next up is Best Bank. Both Steve's are Monzo shareholders so there's a clear winner here....and it isn't Monzo. Having recently incorporated PlayingFTSE into a business we're very much on top of the small business accounts available at the moment, the two Steves breakdown the offerings from the NeoBanks and pick their favourite! So we move onto the ISA's, LISA's and JISA's the Steves pick through each offering discussing merits and opportunities to expand! LISA's is an extremely light category, expect a different winner next year! We finish with the most promising up and comer, this section is dedicated to apps that don't win an award this time but are looking very promising for the future - there's a couple of favourites in the list and we're struggling to pick a winner!

The Risky Mix Podcast
Ep.45 - The ethnicity pay gap and shining a spotlight on disability, Tali Shlomo

The Key Learning Points:1. Tips for organisations looking to build diverse and inclusive work cultures2. The importance of encouraging difficult conversations about race in the workplace and embracing the discomfort involved3.The need for companies to provide better support to, and attract, colleagues with disabilities in order to create a more representative industryThis week, we're joined by a lady who's been a pioneer in many ways for diversity and inclusion within the insurance industry. Tali Shlomo is an internationally recognized HR director, and diversity, inclusion and wellbeing specialist.  As well as being shortlisted in the 2020 Women in Finance awards for Ambassador of the Year, she was highly commended in the Financial Adviser Diversity in Finance Awards 2020 for Diversity Champion of the Year. She's also been recognised in the 2020 Insurance Business Global 100 influential people for creating inclusive cultures. We start by asking Tali about her career journey. She left university and started a summer job in London in, what she described, as the rag trade, working in haberdashery. She then moved to a telecoms start-up - joining as number 11 and working her way up to become head of European operations, and leaving as number 1,000! Tali joined the Chartered Insurance Institute (CII) in 2001 and stayed there for almost two decades, holding HR manager, HR director and global people engagement director roles. She has benefited from working in a wide variety of industries: “In each one of them I've learnt something, and fundamentally the common thread is all about people. How do we support people, how do we support the business to get the best out of people?”During her time with the CII, Tali not only supported her colleagues within the institute but also member firms, which she enjoyed as she could see her work being applied practically. She helped to create the dialogue around diversity, inclusion and wellbeing – starting the conversation around things like dyslexia and Aspergers, all while using the Equality Act as her “anchor”.Two of her main focuses, during her time at the CII, were ethnicity and disability. As the government started to look towards the ethnicity pay gap and broadening out the legal requirement to disclose the gender pay gap, Tali worked on a thought leadership paper, providing insight on the steps that need to be taken by organisations in preparation. “Ethnicity is so much more complex than gender. Ethnicity has many layers.” Tali believes that we need to feel uncomfortable: “Talking about race – we're uncomfortable. Sometimes the only way we grow is through being uncomfortable. Creating a place where we can feel uncomfortable in the workplace so that we can grow and better ourselves, is fundamental.”Tali believes that we're still not tackling disabilities, especially invisible disabilities: “The next opportunity for us is looking at how we support our colleagues and attracting colleagues with disabilities. Because if we are really here to deliver better consumer outcomes, then surely, we need to represent our consumers.”The conversation moves onto technology. Tali believes that AI amplifies biases because it's developed through groupthink: “Yes it's tested, but how mindful are we to test it around ages, different skin colours, different accents?” She acknowledges that none of this is intentional, however, says that we do need to be mindful and break down the groupthink.Tali providers tips for organisations looking to build diverse and inclusive work cultures. For her, it's all about continuing the conversation. And for leaders, start to invest more budget into the area, look at policies that can shift and celebrate some of the wonderful things that have taken place already around D&I.

According to MFAA stats, the number of female brokers has fallen every year for the past three years – with the proportion of female to male brokers also having shrunk on an annual basis since 2016. As such, the industry has been busy working on programs to help promote, inspire and support women in joining this industry and – crucially – remain in it, too. Last month, aggregator and major brokerage brand Mortgage Choice held three digital masterclasses as part of its female talent nurturing program Aspire, and earlier this year partnered with the fourth annual Women in Finance Awards, and announced a new partnership with female financial literacy platform Tilly Money. Tune in to find out: Why Mortgage Choice wants to encourage more women into broking Susan's own experience as a leading woman in finance Why the brand is working to improve female financial literacy And plenty more!

The Key Learning Points:1. How to embrace setbacks and use them to develop both personally and professionally2. The important distinction between confidence and courage and tips on how to become more confident with public speaking3. The changing discourse around diversity and inclusion in the workplaceToday we are joined by Rose St Louis, who has over 20 years' experience in the industry, is co-founder of the Women in Protection Network and is a driving force for diversity in financial services. She won Woman of the Year at the 2019 Women in Financial Advice Awards and Insurance Leader of the Year at the Women in Finance Awards. Rose talks to us about her childhood, being the second daughter of two immigrant parents from Jamaica and Grenada and shared her story of growing up in Luton.  Her parents placed incredible importance on academia, and were supportive around education and school, saying, “you know, you need to just hit them with the books”. That was the way to compete. This was Rose's foundation growing up, focussing on education, studying hard and being credible and qualified. As she puts it: “That's the platform that you will create for yourself to propel forward.”  Being the only black girl in the class and one of three in the year, Rose built resilience “without evening knowing it”, which set her in good stead for making the next move through education and into the world of work. “As long as you can take from your experiences, it just allows you to move past some of those things and gives you skills later in life.” Rose had a tough time in school, and it was through this experience that she was able to add to the skills that she would use later on in life.  Rose tells us about her different experiences in the workplace, from speaking at numerous events, to having career coaching sessions. She explains the interesting parallel between confidence and courage: “When we don't feel confident, we have to feel courageous, and I think the courage comes out of our values and our integrity. That allows us to find the energy to move forward and step into a space where maybe you feel a bit vulnerable”. She lets us in on the tips she uses to make herself feel confident prior to events, and the coping mechanisms people can put in place if they are feeling uncomfortable. Rose's mention of her “power pose” in the mirror is a particular podcast highlight!   The conversation then turns to diversity, and Rose highlights how “diversity and inclusion can differ from sector to sector. Each sector has a different angle and a different lens on their diversity and inclusion experience and how that manifests itself.” Rose admits that she now sees a difference in diversity and the way people behave in the workplace, explaining that people are starting to realise what is an appropriate language exchange, which is a positive and welcome change.
