From breaking bones to trudging through snow – it is a Foley artist's role to reproduce the everyday sound effects that are added to film, TV and games. By using a variety of unconventional props and their own bodies, the goal is to create an authentic soundscape that will enhance our auditory experience. If the Foley goes unnoticed then they've done their job well! Datshiane Navanayagam speaks to two award winning Foley artists and asks what it's like to spend so much time, quite literally stepping into someone else's shoes. Caoimhe Doyle has over 25 years' experience creating Foley sound effects and footsteps for film, television and video games. She's been nominated three times for the MPSE Golden Reel Award for her work on Colm Bairéad's An Cailín Ciúin (The Quiet Girl), The Favourite, directed by Yorgos Lanthimos and David Cronenberg's Eastern Promises. In 2011 she won a MPSE Golden Reel Award and was nominated for an Emmy for her work on Game of Thrones: Season 1 and is a current MPSE nominee for work on Rich Peppiatt's Kneecap. Caoimhe collaborates with an all-female team out of The Foley Lab in a quiet part of County Wicklow in Ireland.Marita Sbeih is a Lebanese Foley artist and one of only a handful working in the Middle East. Since 2018, she has been the dedicated Foley Artist at DB Studios in Beirut, which provides audio post-production for films, documentaries, and art productions from around the globe. Pursuing a career as a Foley artist in a country with many unique challenges has been far from easy, but Marita has built an impressive list of credits for Foley and footsteps in some of the Arab world's more distinguished art-house and indie productions, as well as international projects. Most recently, she worked on Hot Milk, a UK film directed by Rebecca Lenkiewicz, which was selected for the official competition at the 75th Berlinale (2025).Produced by Hannah Dean (Image: (L) Caoimhe Doyle courtesy Caoimhe Doyle. Ever wondered what the creative process is behind the films, TV shows and theatre productions you watch? Well, Crew Chats is a podcast that goes behind the scenes and speaks to the crew that help make these productions. Have you ever wondered about the sound of footsteps echoing in a hallway, the rhythmic trot of a horse, the rustle of clothing, or even the clatter of a wand in your favourite film or TV show? Those sounds don't just happen—they're created by Foley artists. And in this episode, I had the pleasure of speaking with Foley artist, Pete Burgis, who is so passionate about the craft. We talked about what Foley involves, how he found his way into this fascinating world, some of the strangest props he's ever used, and he even recreated some sounds just for us! Credits include: Blood Brothers, Paddington 1 &2, Batman Begins, Harry Potter films from Chamber of Secrets - Deathly Hallows part2 Pete's Recommendations: Twin Peaks Shaun of the Dead Gladiator 2

If you can... then you might just be a foley! We hear from a brother sister duo who make sound effects on the big screen. (Krissy Holmes with foley Hilary Thompson and sound editor Matthew Thompson)

Had a fun conversation with world traveler Charlie Samos. Charlie is a bit of a modern day renaissance man, an explorer of sorts. Mr. Samos lives a full-size life. Not only is he a well accomplished Yoga Instructor who rock climbs, he also worked as a Foley Artist for film and television. Charlie still finds time to travel the world a few times a year. When describing Charlie Samos, one often sounds like you're describing “The Most Interesting Man in the World” from those “Dos Equis” ads. Charlie's stories of travel and intrigue and adventures and dangerous close calls would make even “Robert Ludlum” lean in to hear more. Robert might even steal a few scenarios for his next book. Charlie Samos has keen observational skills and insights into the human condition. This is evident as he relays the stories of his adventures with such picturesque details, recounting the emotionally impacted moments of his journeys. He may not be “The Most Interesting Man in The World“ but I guarantee you, when Charlie Samos speaks of his adventures and travels, he is the most interesting man at a party. --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/rawle-d/message
Mani Ratnam's Ponniyin Selvan Part 1 released a little over a week ago and has taken the box office by storm. A critical and commercial success, the film has attracted a wide demographic to the theatres. Largely due to its source - Kalki R. Krishnamurthy's serialized novel Ponniyin Selvan published in the 1950s, a historical fiction based on the Cholas and the conflicts within and outside the kingdom for the throne. The film, like most Mani Ratnam films, is also an example of technical mastery which is one of the attractions for widespread theatre viewing with almost no one choosing to wait for the streaming release like it is the norm of late. The film is star studded - Karthi, Aishwarya Rai, Vikram, Trisha, Jayam Ravi, Jayaram, Sobhita Dhulipala, Aishwarya Lekshmi, Sarath Kumar, Parthiban, Prabhu, Lal, Prakash Raj and more. There are stars behind the camera as well apart from the director and writing team (Mani Ratnam, Jeyamohan and Elango Kumaravel). It is edited by Sreekar Prasad, art direction by Thotta Tharani with cinematography by Ravi Varman. Music is by A.R Rahman and sound design by Anand Krishnamoorthi. Foley Artist is Prathap and re-recording mix by Craig Mann. In this episode, we talk about one aspect of the technical mastery - sound design. Sound Designer/Engineer/Editor Anand Krishnamoorthi joins Aditya and Ashoka to talk about the sound of Ponniyin Selvan Part 1 and the nuances in the art of sound design. We talk about sound design in general in cinema as well as the work that has gone into Ponniyin Selvan. Anand gives both eli5 explanations for some aspects of his work and also some nerdy and deeply technical things that go into a film's sound. Listen on. Susan Fitz-Simon has carved out an interestingly unique path for her life. She has been a professional Foley Artist for almost 30 years. What the heck is a Foley Artist, you say. Well that is exactly what Susan was so eloquently and passionately able to explain to us during this podcast interview. Foley is the art of performing sound effects to picture after a film, T.V. show, commercial or video game has been shot. Susan informs us that the Foley Artist is often performing live syncopations to picture in order to enhance sounds in the scenes. Certain sounds like footsteps, prop noises, sword play, clothing flapping in the wind are often added by the Foley Artist. Susan Fitz-Simmons has worked on over a hundred film and television projects, carving out a reputation as an extremely respected Foley Artist/Foley Editor. Susan is able to use her knowledge of music gained from her rock star days in the 90's. These skills have given her a rhythmic approach to the world of Foley which helped her to adapt nicely to this very unique occupation. Okay, this is a fun episode about something that we've all heard about but have rarely seen. Have you ever noticed in movie credits that there's somebody called the Foley Artist? Well this episode is about those people. Almost 100% of the sounds that are recorded on a movie set during production are actually replaced by Foley artists, in some amazing, remarkable, wacky ways. Enjoy. This is one to talk about.

See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.
In episode 6, I review the "Podcast Taxonomy" whitepaper, a framework for who does what in this nascent industry. Drawing comparisons to traditional media and entertainment, I dive into one specific role, that of the Foley Artist. What an exciting time to be involved in the audio space. Behind Movie Sound Effects (0:34)Guest: Marko Costanzo, Emmy Award-Winning Foley ArtistWe know there's a lot of movie watching going on right now with everyone cooped up at home, so here's a conversation about the really surprising origin of the sounds you hear when you watch a film. Marko Costanzo's done sound effects for a bunch of hit movies and TV shows, including The Irishman, The Nutcracker and the Four Realms and Mary Poppins Returns. (Originally aired 2/6/19) In the Surprisingly Organized World of Kidnapping for Ransom, Insurance Companies Are Key (25:35)Guest: Anja Shortland, Professor in Political Economy, King's College London, Author of “Kidnap: Inside the Ransom Business”A lot of people are probably kicking themselves for not buying travel insurance for trips they had to cancel due to the pandemic. But no one could have foreseen that happening. There's another kind of insurance you will probably never need: kidnap insurance. There's a surprisingly organized industry built around kidnapping people for ransom globally. The companies that provide insurance against the possibility that you'll get kidnapped for ransom play a strange and important role, according to the research of Anja Shortland. (Originally aired 9/25/2019) First It Burned Them, Then It Froze Them. How an Asteroid Killed the Dinosaurs. (50:41)Guest: Sean Gulick, Research Professor, University of Texas at AustinYou've heard that a massive asteroid caused the dinosaurs to go extinct. But how exactly? I've never understood why a giant rock crashing to Earth would kill all the dinosaurs. One asteroid couldn't smash them all. What about the dinos on the other side of the planet – how does an asteroid kill them? Geologist Sean Gulick at the University of Texas at Austin is part of a team that's pieced together the most detailed timeline yet of just how the extinction happened. (Originally aired 9/26/2019) Human Trafficking Is More Prevalent Than Previously Thought, Know the Signs (1:07:14)Guest: Amy Farrell, Associate Professor of Criminology and Criminal Justice, Northeastern UniversityHuman trafficking still happens right here in the United States. And it's happening more often than the official data suggest. Police departments often don't have a category for “human trafficking” when recording crimes in state and federal databases. Criminologist Amy Farrell at Northeastern University says that – coupled with insufficient training of police officers – has led to a “massive undercount” of human trafficking cases in the US. (Originally aired 10/7/2019) Processing Processed Food Guilt (1:24:23)Guest: Ruth MacDonald, Department Chair / CALS Assistant Dean of Graduate Programs, Department of Food Science and Human Nutrition, Iowa State University When people rushed to stock up on food at the start of pandemic quarantines, the cereal and pasta shelves emptied – but there was still plenty of fresh produce at my grocery store. Which makes sense, because if you don't know how long you'll be stuck at home, you want stuff that won't go bad as quickly. And there's the rub of processed food – it lasts longer and is often easier to cook. But it's also not good for us, right? (Originally 10/14/2019)
