It's easy to look at people working on these AI-native products and assume they have it all figured out… but we're all still learning and exploring what's possible. This came up in George Kedenburg's episode too.Curiosity > everythingI asked Maheen what traits are more important than curiosity for people interested in designing AI products. Her answer? Nothing. The importance of passion projectsThere's a trend I'm noticing in these interviews… the designers who are creating cutting edge use cases for AI are the ones actively exploring the technology with side projects. Reading essays isn't the way to learn. You have to want something to exist in the world and use that as a reason to figure out what's possible. For Maheen it was using AI models to colorize images of Pakistan. For Nate Parrott it was using AI to hallucinate in HTML.Maheen references Alex Cornell's storytelling abilitiesMaheen's demo for animating drawings (it's very fun)We referenced Colin Dunn's episode about the importance of naming in AI productsMaheen's colorized photos of PakistanMaheen's FakeID podcastMeta's AI releaseMaheen raved about the Rosebud journalling app

In this episode of Podcast Mark, host Mark de Grasse has an extensive discussion with his long-time collaborator Brad Ball, focusing on artificial intelligence and its impacts on industries like branding and design. They explore the current capabilities of AI—as well as its limitations—and caution that it is not magic, still requiring significant human input and creativity.TOPICS:- What AI is and isn't, and its current limitations: They explore the current capabilities of AI like accelerating processes and generating ideas. However, they note AI still requires extensive human creativity, planning, and editing to shape the output in a useful way towards desired outcomes. It is not magic—it has boundaries in its abilities.- How AI can be used for ideation and accelerating creative processes: AI tools can rapidly produce ideas, concepts, and drafts to significantly enhance and expedite creative workflows. As an example, Brad discusses quickly mocking up visual concepts to demonstrate for clients rather than only written explanations. The key is crafting thoughtful prompts and parameters to guide the AI.- The potential of AI to transform education by personalizing lessons: They envision AI enabling customized educational approaches tailored to individuals' interests and comprehension levels rather than one-size-fits-all. Mark gives an example of struggling to grasp abstract moon-phase terminology until it was framed as a house construction analogy. AI could perpetually re-frame concepts until they "click."LINKSBrad Ball: https://www.linkedin.com/in/iambradball/Ardent Creative: https://www.ardentcreative.com/Support the show

Can you believe that LMT (https://lmtmag.com/) Lab Day Chicago was almost 3 months ago? We got 7 hours of recordings when we were set up in the Ivoclar (https://www.ivoclar.com/en_us) Ballroom. This week wraps it all up with 4 amazing conversations from that wonderful weekend. First up is Susan van Kensbergen who is the Vice President of Myerson (https://www.myersontooth.com/). Susan talks about her journey from being a ceramist, moving up in lab responsibility, managing the world's largest LAVA milling center, and finding her new home at Myerson, the home of Durflex (https://www.myersontooth.com/duraflex/) and an upcoming "game changing" printer. Then we chat with Neal Allen from Mustard Seed Dental Studio (https://www.mustardseeddental.com/). Neal spent 20 years in a large lab before moving into a growing lab owned by a Prosthodontist. Neal talks about the importance of creating a happy lab culture and treating the employees like family. Next is the "better" half of Artifex Dental Lab (https://artifexlab.com/), Julio Munoz. Julio grew up in Bolivia where he is a board-certified Oral Surgeon. A lady brought him to the US where he connected with Artifex and helped create the "Triple Jig" technique for full arch implant restorations. We wrap us the whole weekend with a special treat, Barb's technician son, Zack Wojdan. Zack talks about growing up in the lab, starting at the beginning, working his way up, working with his mom, and goals for the future. A BIG thanks to LMT for putting on an amazing weekend and a BIGGER THANKS to Ivoclar for hosting us. Your hosts this week are John (@johnbiggs on Twitter), Victor (@vmarks) and Nicholas (@nicholasadeleon). We open the week with some AI talk, stuff like ChatGPT and Dall-E, and whether or not these tools can be used to create watches. We more or less land on, "Sure, why not?" We then pivot to a new (to us) Norwegian brand called Aigi, whose Satellite Ground Station we're definitely big fans of. John loves it, and he hates everything! Victor then brings the brand Houtman to the table, which he now has in for review. Another new-to-us brand that's a winner. Nice! There's a bit more but that's the gist. Episode Highlights:02.10: May tells the listeners a little bit about her journey in tech as a founder.02.22: May and her co-founder have been building tools for writers in some way or other during their whole entrepreneurial journey. 04.11: Many teams are building their own quality content style guides, or some call it content design systems, which is the kind of product teams take for brand book but only for a digital product. 05.45: The goal of the content strategy is that the person owning the systemization is to enable them to do good writing on their own. The best practice for setting up the system depends on where the team is, says May.07.18: May explains that they are doing a templates library that their customers and their community is contributing, and they will be able to quickly build a very deep style guide in Writer, even if a user is starting from the scratch.08.04: We have got teams that are taking 200 pages of style guides and getting them into Writer in one day, and then your end-user has that at their fingertips while they are writing, says May.09.27: Yuval inquires from May, if we have 200 pages of a content style guide and people in the company would follow the guideline, how do you guys solve that issue and make the content accessible for everyone in the product team?10.45: May explains that they have got a chrome extension that is a sidebar that kind of lives alongside various apps and underlines things while a user is writing in chrome, and the same works in Figma.13.01: You have a content style guide connected to some database operated by the content style guide team, and then you could use it in your Figma because it is integrated with that in the frame of writing, says Yuval.14.47: Yuval asks May, based on her experience and clients, how do people use Figma to work with their copy management these days?18.57: Yuval asks May's take on the future of AI and writers who think that all these AI tools would replace them at some point?19.58: Everything on the market today on language generation piece is at best one layer of rules on top of the very broad-based API of GPT 3, affirms May.21.38: An accelerant to your workflow has a lot to do with your native writing ability and creativity. At this stage, it is not an out-of-the-box solution that writers for a living think are great.22.31: AI is not convinced to replace us this year, or even in the next few years, but the question is for writers or designers that oversee creating digital experiences, “what kind of challenges do you think they will have in the future?”24.23: The quality input is what is required for anything that is helping you on the consistency side and under a scale on the enablement side, says Yuval.28.29: Yuval has been reading a lot on strategy, design, content space, and rereading stuff. We don't save any customer data, and it is a big differentiator against the Grammarly release of the world. We are world-class at synthetic data creation, says May.  Tweetable Quotes“We still are kind of in the same place where overall leadership doesn't understand the power that words can have to drive business objectives.” – May“If you don't have a style guide, you can work with our support team and us or our CS team to use the writer product to define rules.” - May“The beauty of having everybody in Figma who's writing and reviewing is that it has much higher fidelity. Amy Yoshitsu, a Founder and the Head of Design for Kleeen software, joins us to talk about their vision for using machine learning to automate a variety of design and engineering tasks for enterprise software. She introduces us to the plans of her startup, Kleeen Software, which aspires to transform enterprise software by automating a variety of design and engineering tasks. Amy also talks about how Kleeen hopes to level up remote collaboration in the process, shared in part from the perspective of their own distributed team and model.   Memorable Quotes “Imagine a world where the enhancement of the core features were part of a release all the time instead of just once a year.” “What makes software a good candidate for automation? Consistency. What makes good UX, what makes good code, or even good features? It is consistency. We were able to determine patterns and repetition in something, and that something may be a good candidate for automation if we can do that.” “When designers are creating wonderful things and working with engineers who aren't totally bogged down by the tedious tasks on their end, they can be excited about and engaged in making the product they're working on its best.” “The process is about making connections and determining patterns, and then the goal is to automate those patterns away.” “Our goal is that anyone can quickly make a high fidelity prototype of a flow or a product to clearly communicate their ideas.” “The skills that are gonna be important are critical and analytical thinking, creativity, and emotional intelligence. And the requirements for these will only grow, especially in the design world.” “Maybe technology could facilitate people having different experiences that are outside of the limitations of their body and identity. And maybe this will help people to understand each other and maybe themselves a little bit more.” “Enterprise spaces are more appropriate for this automation oriented approach than let's say the consumer or the medical product space.” “We start with the problem, we understand the data that we have right now around that problem, and then we back into the right algorithm for a specific situation.” “We are able to decompose UI and teach our system about these modular concepts.”   Who You'll Hear Dirk Knemeyer, Social Futurist and Producer of Creative Next (@dknemeyer) Jonathan Follett, Writer, Electronic Musician, Emerging Tech Researcher and Producer of Creative Next (@jonfollett) Amy Yoshitsu, Co-Founder and Head of Design, Kleeen Software (AmyYoshitsu.com)   Join The Conversation Website & Newsletter: www.creativenext.org Twitter: @GoCreativeNext Facebook: /GoCreativeNext Instagram: @GoCreativeNext   Sponsors GoInvo, A design practice dedicated to innovation in healthcare whose clients are as varied as AstraZeneca, 3M Health Information Services, and the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services. www.goinvo.com  Design Museum Foundation, A new kind of museum, they believe design can change the world.
