Todd Hopwood shocked me when he explained his radical approach to mental health transparency. We discuss a system he has implemented which is designed to help him when he is struggling and needs help the most. Frankly, it is not an approach that I would personally be comfortable practicing in my workplace. However, there is no question that his courage, leadership, and modeling of this behavior promotes greater awareness of mental health issues in the workplace and it most definitely gives employees greater assurance that their mental health concerns are valid and will be supported within the organization. In this episode, I share: Life & biz updates after my period of Mars Rx hibernation How to recession proof your business while honoring ethics. As a neurodivergent astrologer, online business strategist, educator and an "ambivert-ish" person moving through the world, part of the conditioning that I've been navigating is releasing guilt around my energy levels changing like the phases of the moon. On a macro level, I've been observing how I parallel what I do in my business to the changes of the season. After recovering from burnout 3 times (each time, my burnout period lasted anywhere from 3 months to 9 months) during my years in corporate and building e-commerce brands, building a business that sustains my energy as I move through my cyclic waves became paramount. The second item next on my priority list after I figured out how to fill my own cup back up - unique to my conditioning & life lessons, was figuring out how to help other growing soulpreneurs break the vicious cycle of busywork, teetering on the edges of burnout because they didn't have the supportive tools that honors their unique energy. As I look at what's happening in our current economic climate, the way outdated financial structures are going through it's tower moment - I also understand that fear, uncertainty may take the driver's seat. I felt called to explore how we navigate our business with resilience & grace, how we stay authentic in our soulpreneurship while honoring the ethtics of this financial climate without furthering harm & scarcity in others. Corruption is an unfortunate fact of business life. How can you remain ethical and still survive when it seems that everyone else is playing the game? Soji Apampa is one entrepreneur who believes there are ways to strategically navigate a corrupt system. Hear how his NGO in Nigeria is helping entrepreneurs to keep their hands clean. And listen to true stories from business owners across Africa and South Asia about the real cost of corruption on lives and livelihoods. When it comes to dealing with corruption, you are definitely not alone. Which is a key reason why Soji Apampa created an NGO dedicated to the issue. In 1995 the Integrity Organization was born and later the Convention on Business Integrity for the sole purpose of dealing with the issue of corruption in Nigeria. The organization's early goal was simple according to Apampa: “We would like to be that matchstick that starts the bush fire. And even if the matchstick gets extinguished, so long as the fire spreads, we will have achieved something.” Twenty-five years later, they've achieved far more, studying corruption and explaining how it actually operates to help others avoid it — in Nigeria and beyond. “The reasons why people fall prey is, number one, they don't know the rules. So, you don't know the rules, you do the wrong thing, they just charge you. If you do the right thing in the first place, you can avoid those petty charges to start with,” Apampa suggests.Apampa encourages people to do the right thing from the start to avoid the “slippery slope” of corruption. “For many wise organizations, they just bite the bullet from the start and do the right thing, and they can avoid the bulk of it. But if you pay once, they keep coming. And imagine you do that with four or five agencies, then you're totally at their mercy,” he says.Unfortunately, the only way many small businesses can avoid corruption is to stay small and under the radar, but this ends up hampering their growth. So, one of Apampa's goals is to help educate people on how to be ethical within an unethical environment. Leadership, he believes, is the best place to start.“If you're trying to be ethical as a small business, it starts from the posture of the leader,” Apampa explains. “Everyone takes a cue from there. It's not enough for you as the chief executive to be a moral person or an ethical person if you cannot put in the systems for compliance to ensure that even those who want to act immorally or unethically cannot.”Apampa believes there can be upsides to operating ethically within a corrupt system. “The whole anti-corruption thing is not always all bad, because if you are trying to survive by doing it ethically, you have to be more innovative than those who are willing to do the bad things.”Listen to Apampa's advice on how to develop strategies and structures for avoiding or navigating corruption in your business environment. This episode is based on research and materials developed by Ken Shotts and Neil Malhotra. This episode is inspired by my own breaches in integrity over the 2 decades plus that I've been a coach and some I see other coaches stumble with as well. Find the FULL show notes at prosperouscoach.com/141.If you took coach training, hopefully you were provided with some standard ethical guidelines that need to be followed with your clients. Things like:·      Keeping your coaching client's contact info and what they say confidential unless they give express permission for you to share some part of it.·      Setting personal and time boundaries with clients.Beyond that, no one talks much about ethics and integrity in coaching.Coaching is not currently a regulated field so it's doubly important that you, as the professional coach, regulate yourself. That helps all coaches and the future of coaching.Complaints about coaches hurt the field of coaching. And we really don't want this field to be regulated, as it would greatly change the coaching industry for the worse. What It Really Means to Be a Professional CoachHave you realized that YOU are a PROFESSIONAL? Take this in.Own the fact that what you do is a professional service and you are a trained professional offering serious and consequential experiences through your coaching. When I say serious and consequential, I mean that you could hurt someone just as easily as you could help them.I don't think you should fear the possibility of hurting someone, but it's wise to consider it often. More and more I craft what I say to clients both verbally and in writing. When a client pays you for your services it automatically changes the power differential. You have a bit more or maybe a lot more perceived power than your client. You can equalize that by:·      The respect you show your clients. Acknowledge always that they are resourceful, intelligent and whole human beings who don't need you to survive. They can take of themselves.·      Encouraging them to take full responsibility for their feelings, thoughts and actions.I even have a sentence about this in my Coaching Agreement — part of my intake packet (also called a welcome or onboarding packet.)As a professional you have an obligation to improve and maintain your integrity – your professional boundaries and more.A Make or Break Factor of Your Coaching Business SuccessBeyond being the right thing to do, I've come to think of integrity as a make it or break it factor in coaching business success.I've seen how the way coaches conduct themselves affects their ability to earn well. For example, if a coaching relationship is damaged by a breach of some sort that's not addressed quickly that bad energy can float out and infect your business. People may not want to work with you even if they don't know why.Your integrity is about your core values in life, business, relationships — everything. It's a set of principles that guide your words and actions – and even your mindset to help you to be your best self and do well at everything you do.5 Powerful Questions to Check In With Your Integrity LevelTo raise your integrity in your coaching business, look at all of these areas:1.     What you do and say with clients2.     What you do and say with potential coaching clients – including your marketing practices, social media posting, the words on your website, how you enroll clients3.     Your business habits and timeliness4.     How honest you are with yourself about what's going on with your business.Consider checking in with yourself every month or so. The Guidebook "Strengthening Ethical Conduct & Business Integrity: A Guide for Companies in Emerging Markets" highlights a decade of lessons learned and observations of the private sector supporting ethical business practices among companies in emerging markets. The guide aims to help companies in emerging markets in three main ways: 1) Make company leaders confident that behaving ethically will not put their company at a disadvantage compared to competitors that continue unethical, “business as usual” practices. 2) Equip individuals who champion business integrity within their company with better guidance on how to implement a business integrity program. 3) Offer practical suggestions to interested business leaders who are still at an early or exploratory phase in their approach to business integrity.  Check out the CIPE website to view the Guidebook.

She joins Vince Walden to discuss how the Forum deals with global corruption and promotes integrity. The World Economic Forum is an international organization for private-public cooperation whose goal is to bring businesses, governments and civil societies together to address a wide array of issues. PACI is a platform in the global anti-corruption arena that puts emphasis on public-private cooperation, responsible leadership, and technological advances. Their agenda is to leverage the tone from the top to change how companies operate and build a corporate culture of ethics and integrity.  There are four pillars of the agenda for business integrity: commitment to ethics and integrity beyond compliance; the strengthening of corporate culture and incentives to drive continuous learning and improvements; the leveraging of technologies to reduce the scope of corruption; and the supporting of collective action to increase scale and impact. Global corruption levels are expected to rise as a result of the rising pressure caused by the pandemic. Lisa recommends appointing leaders who think of integrity as essential as a way to combat it. Holed up in a small Nordic city, a disruptive genius develops a robot lawyer designed to methodically take over the Norwegian legal industry. But this isn't a synopsis for the next big Scandi thriller – it's the latest episode of The Hearing. This week's guest, Morten Tidemann, flew in from Stavanger in Norway. He's best known for the innovative methods he's using to disrupt the business of law. Morten sits down with Kevin to discuss the efficiency savings enabled by his robot lawyer 'Ida' – around document assembly for legal, as well as business transactions and processes. The pair also chat about Nordic noir TV, alternative fee arrangements, the stigma of low-cost legal services, and why lawyers tend to be so risk-averse when it comes to tech adoption. I spoke with Austin-based professional voice actor Melanie Scroggins, Owner of Melanie Scroggins Voiceover. Melanie found me based on my tweets about junk skills (Alexa skills with no content that are squatting on search terms). Her story resonated with me because it opens the door to a larger conversation about how we value and pay talent. For voice actors who are providing the important sonic branding that we in the voice community are effusive about, communities like SpokenLayer are underpaying freelancers to a surprising degree. And somehow, no one is talking about it.This is about integrity and hopefully serves as a conversation starter. Let’s openly discuss these things so we can create a better place for everyone, from users and customers to developers, brands, and content creators.Connect with Melanie Scroggins:melaniescroggins.comLinkedIn1-click subscribe on your native podcast app See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.

What Works for Biz Podcast - Business Management

Business integrity is earned, not automatic. Have you ever come across these situations? A person says one thing and does another. Someone lies to obtain an advantage. A story is made up to protect yourself or put others in jeopardy. You may get away with it in the short run. But there is usually … Continue reading "How to Gain Business Integrity" The post How to Gain Business Integrity appeared first on What Works for Biz.

Topics:1. Introducing Erich Krauss [2:34]2. Transitioning to paleo publisher [8:11]3. Focusing on the client [16:46]4. Hustle and grind [25:02] Erich Krauss is the owner and President of Victory Belt Publishing, but his position in life wasn't always on top. He started with modest aspirations to be a writer, and did become one, only not in the genre he expected sa first. His dream to be a writer led him down a path to learning the ins and outs of the publishing industry, which, to his surprise, wasn't quite what he expected. When Erich discovered that, in the majority of cases, authors barely makes any money from the sales of a book (and that the books are often edited and changed to not be exactly as the author wanted or intended) he decided to take matters into his own hands to start a company with different values - focused on the authors. His story is inspiring and motivating as Victory Belt has become the #1 Paleo publisher there is today. The company is also the publisher with the highest ratio of New York Times bestsellers - often with multiple books on the list at once, crushing the competition.
