Storybook byScott Holmes from Free Music Archive (https://freemusicarchive.org/) Canal 3 by Quincas Moreira from YoutubeAudio Library (https://studio.youtube.com/)
This year has seen a tremendous amount of change for Christian NGOs doing transformational development throughout the world. In many ways, we are entering a new era of global mission and international development. To talk about some of those changes and to help us keep a pulse on what God is up to, we're joined by Michael Cerna who serves as the CEO at the Accord Network. Building on topics from Accord's Thursday Three weekly newsletter, Michael talks with Brandon Stiver about recent reports, articles and resources that are charting a path forward for us. Before the Conference League anthem came on in Celje Slovenia, one warm August night this year, today's guest had a lot of work behind him already while I was was on my way via train, uber and rental car from Bosnia. He is Rok Gregoric, press and pr wizard of NK Celje, a Slovenian club that was long a middling in the league of an already small country but has made it to the group phase of the conference league last year and again this year. A remarkable feat for a really pretty quiet city between the two main Slovenian cities Ljubljana and Maribor. Find out why. But also: what goes on in a smaller club when a UEFA competition comes to town? How do they coordinate with the visitors? What security arrangements have to be made? Where does all the UEFA signage come from? Which media gets which access? Rok takes us behind the scenes of his work, and shares about the club and the city - and a remarkable coach. OMG, there's a missing child! And for once, a bunch of middle-school girls actually *are* the best people to solve this, because the adults are busy making casseroles and phoning Kristy to trauma-dump. Meanwhile, Mary Anne makes Jell-O. On today's agenda: cutting-edge computer technology; a mysterious lack of Jessi; a catalogue of OSHA violations; Barratt family revisionism; how to get your kissing face just right; cutting-edge weapons technology; historical turnip grievances; Stoneybrook's rich Francophone heritage; cutting-edge time-travelling cassette-tape technology. Our theme song is ‘The Incredible Shrinking Larry' by Matt Oakley and ‘Big Band Jingle A' is by Lobo Loco, both on the Free Music Archive. If you like our show, tell a friend, rate and review on your podcast app of choice, drop us an email, or come say hi on Instagram! We also have a ko-fi and we're real self-conscious about it!

StorybookbyScott Holmes from Free Music Archive(https://freemusicarchive.org/) Canal 3 byQuincas Moreira fromYoutubeAudio Library (https://studio.youtube.com/)

Recently, physicists learned how to generate lasers from Peacock feathers. After discussing that, we explore a recent report that 5% of birds in Australia might exhibit 'sex reversal'. In 'sex reversal' the body's sex organs don't match the sex as determined by DNA testing. Finally, Dr. Leslie Moise reads a poem she wrote about an innovative recycling program in New Orleans that converts discarded glass bottles into beach sand. ‘Bench Talk: The Week in Science' is a weekly program that airs on WFMP Louisville FORward Radio 106.5 FM (forwardradio.org) every Monday at 7:30 pm, Tuesday at 11:30 am, and Wednesday at 7:30 am. In this episode we're discussing Blood in the Machine by Brian Merchant, published in 2023 by Little, Brown and Company. Blood in the Machine is an account of the Luddite rebellion in early 19th century England. Merchant's engaging study draws parallels between this account and contemporary questions about the effects of automation, big tech and AI, as well as efforts to resist and challenge the degradation of working conditions and society in general. ---------------------------------------------------------------We have now fully decamped from Twitter, but you can keep in touch with the podcast our email abcwithdannyandjim@gmail.com, and our Substack https://abcwithdannyandjim.substack.com/. StorybookbyScott Holmes from Free Music Archive (https://freemusicarchive.org/) Canal 3 by Quincas Moreira fromYoutubeAudio Library (https://studio.youtube.com/)
There is no place on Earth that God is not working. Even in authoritarian regimes that make following Christ illegal, He still moves. Iran is one of those countries. While we hear about Iran pretty regularly in the news, we don't typically hear about what God is doing through His Spirit and in His Church there. Today we're joined by the CEO of Transform Iran, Lana Silk. The Assistant Professor of Football: Soccer, Culture, History.
This is Part 2 of an unusual episode, on the move through countries, memories, wounds, war, peace and the beautiful game.Sturm Graz is and was a workers club when I came to the club in the 90s, one year before Ivica Osim arrived. We knew he was a mathematician, soccer player and coach, and he knew workers clubs, from Željezničar, in Grbavica, back home in Sarajevo, the city then under a yearlong siege in the Bosnian independence wars. But he added something else. To him, the game was discourse, it was beauty. He explained soccer to us in a way we'd never seen it. Professorial and sometimes grumpy, but always extremely humble. He made us see things in football that we hadn't seen before. And even on the day of his funeral, he made me see things about life that I wouldn't have seen otherwise.Osim, an Agnostic and philosopher of football and of the world, is a kind of saint most Bosnians can agree on. He is recommended reading in Japanese schools. And he is the reason why I went to Sarajevo this hot August. BUZZWORDS is a new pilot podcast from Open City, produced in collaboration with the arts and culture podcast EMPIRE LINES. The podcast unpacks words and phrases often overused in the fields of art and architecture. Produced by curator, writer, and researcher Jelena Sofronijevic, each episode invites artists, curators, architects, and academics to consider what we really mean when we use terms like “sustainable” or “decolonised.”In this episode, Jelena speaks with artist Jasmina Cibic about the idea of “care thinking” and what it means to be both care-ful and care-less in the practice, performance, and preservation of art and cultural artefacts. Their conversation ranges from Cibic's current exhibition The Gift Ecology at Void Art Centre in Derry, to her representation of Slovenia at the 55th Venice Biennale, exploring how care shapes her work and what we might learn from it.The theme music is “Devotion” by Jim Hall from the Free Music Archive, licensed under a Attribution 4.0 International License.Subscribe to the Open City Podcast on Spotify, Soundcloud or iTunesThe Open City Podcast is supported by Bloomberg Connects, the free arts and culture platform and produced in association with the Architects' Journal, London Society, C20 Society and Save Britain's Heritage. The Open City Podcast is recorded and produced at the Open City offices located in Bureau. Families are the center piece of how God created societies to flourish, yet there are so many things that can tear down this fundamental part of God's design. We know that orphanages are spread out throughout the world and we know that those children should be allowed to grow up in families. In today's episode, we have Chantry Mweemba of Alliance for Children Everywhere joining to dive deeper into the effects of urbanization, education access and other factors that are leading children in Zambia to separate from their families. We also get into how the recent USAID closure is negatively affecting the protection of children in Zambia and how organizations like ACE are continuing to step up for children even in the midst of uncertain times. The Assistant Professor of Football: Soccer, Culture, History.
Sturm Graz is and was a workers club when I came to the club in the 90s, one year before Ivica Osim arrived. This is Part 1 of an unusual episode, on the move through countries, memories, wounds, war, peace and the beautiful game.HELPFUL LINKS AND SOURCES FOR THIS EPISODE:Uni of Michigan Libraries, resource guide for Bosnian history and cultureIvica Osim (Wikipedia)Tifa (Mladen Vojičić) - Grbavica, live in 1994 (YouTube); introTifa - Grbavica at Grbavica stadium, with Zeljo's fans; (Youtube) outroIvica Osim memorial ceremony in Graz (Youtube), during introSev Dah - Grbavica (Youtube) (background track)CNN's Christiane Amanpour reporting after the Srebrenica genocide (Youtube - warning, brutality and dead bodies)Sarajevo (wikipedia)Visit SarajevoNEW: send me a text message! One of our great passions behind the show is equipping practitioners globally to serve the poor and develop communities. Today's episode is all about that. We've invited our friend Jeremy Macias back onto the show to share with us about the "messy middle" of monitoring and evaluation and the critical role that it plays in community interventions. Jeremy works with World Relief and shares some of his experiences developing monitoring and evaluation frameworks with different organizations over the years. Then, Brandon dives into the Apostle Paul's words from Romans 12 as an ethical framework for understanding Romans 13, but really all of Christian life. Lastly, we've got some gifts that we want to share with you! You've heard Brandon's book recommendation for years, now it's time to give some away. The Assistant Professor of Football: Soccer, Culture, History.
Damiano Benzoni, Italian journalist and seasoned groundhopper, has written a wonderful book - an "emotive map of football in Berlin," a rich portrait of a city through the eyes of football. And when that city happens to be the German capital, torn by wars, shaped by the dvide between two Germanies and various migrant influences, the texture of such a book happens to be particularly interesting. The book, for now, is available only in Italien, so consider this an English language exclusive. We also get an update on SC Freiburg's last season. And just to scare the right people away, an Austrian workers' song that dovetails wonderfully with Gabriel Kuhn's engaging portrait of a social democratic soccer utopia from Spring.HELPFUL LINKS FOR THIS EPISODE:Book website (Urbone Publishing)Damiano Benzoni on X and InstagramBiberstand Boys - Unioner im Haus (YouTube) - this is an anti-Union song, mind you!Die Arbeiter von Wien - Austrian workers' song (YouTube), with English lyricsNEW: send me a text message! There is no more salient, no more pressing global event right now for the Church to engage than what is happening currently in Gaza. Gaza presents not just a lightning rod for conversation (or controversy), but also serves as a moral compass for all humankind. The global Church is wrestling with questions like, "is Israel justified in their offensive?" "how do we understand the theology and politics in play?" and "are we watching a genocide unfold before our eyes?" To help us understand the broader history and context around Gaza, we've invited Dr. Ben Norquist from Churches for Middle East Peace to the show. He sits down with Brandon Stiver to discuss all things surrounding the conflict and most importantly the decades leading up to what we see in 2025. Join us in this conversation and join us in praying and acting for peace. She sits down to talk with Brandon Stiver about the trip, the book and why basketball turned out to be the MVP of the trip.
