The lymphatic system is crucial in keeping our bodies healthy by helping eliminate waste products. Without a pump, it's essential to support your lymphatic system by keeping it moving, and castor oil packs are a great way to do just that. For centuries, castor oil packs have been used as a natural therapy on various parts of the body, from the liver to the abdomen, joints, and thyroid. The process is simple and starts with applying a piece of cloth soaked in castor oil to the skin. The pack is then covered with plastic wrap and a heat source, such as a hot water bottle, and left on for a specific time. For this episode, I had the pleasure of interviewing Carrie Vitt about the incredible benefits of castor oil packs for thyroid health. Carrie is a Functional Nutritional Therapist at Our Well House and the publisher of the health and wellness site, Deliciously Organic. Carrie specializes in teaching how to use nutrition, detox therapies, and lifestyle changes for those with thyroid disease and autoimmunity. In this conversation, Carrie and I explore how castor oil packs can benefit people with both hyperthyroidism and Hashimoto's, how Carrie approaches iodine supplementation, the simple steps you can use to get started with castor oil packs, some of Carrie's favorite essential oils to support both the thyroid and immune system, and more. “When you live each day with intentionality, there's almost no limit to what you can do. You can transform yourself, your family, your community, and your nation. When enough people do that, they can change the world. When you intentionally use your everyday life to bring about positive change in the lives of others, you begin to live a life that matters.” ~ John C. Maxwell Guest Introduction:  Welcome to Exploring the Seasons of Life, a podcast for women with a big heart on a spiritual journey. I'm your host Cindy MacMillan and I'm joined today by Amy Saloner. Each week, I interview coaches and spiritual explorers from all walks of life about beginnings, endings and the messy bits in-between. Self-love, well-being, and mindset are at the heart of our conversations because once you change the inside, the outside will begin to change as well.  This is part of a self-care series called Life in Full Bloom: Living From the Inside Out. Amy is a Licensed Clinical Social Worker and Functional Nutritional Therapist. She has worked with children and families for more than 25 years as a therapist, educator, event producer, ceremony facilitator and community builder. She lives in an intentional community in North County San Diego with her husband, two children, dog and ten of her closest friends. I am so happy you are here and I can't wait to share today's guest. Here's a glimpse of our conversation: Amy, welcome to the podcast.  3:03 It's a very meaningful discussion point. Because, to me, the seasons of life are those steps we take from childhood all the way through adulthood, that take us through various growth points. And a lot of work that I do, that I've done in my own personal life and now that I do professionally with families, is really support various rites of passage that we go through.  7:05 I really wanted to support families in capacity to be resilient and strong and so I did a lot of research. I put together this course, that allowed for people to explore how to be strong in their bodies, how to be strong in, you know, their mindset, how to fortify their relationships, through this challenging time.  8:30 And following me on social media, I share various themes throughout every month. And we just keep talking about and creating community, because it's one of the things I'm really passionate about is just making sure people have support to continue to grow that capacity for resilience.  11:53 Journaling is one part; I pair journaling with meditation or just quiet, self-reflective time.  15:03 I actually call boundaries one of our most important self-care tools.  22:33 I focus a lot with families and adolescents around life skills in general. I am teaching a course next month, for graduating seniors and their families around this transition.  24:03 It's called Beyond Graduation. And it's a two-part workshop. The first one is really with the parents and the teens together to focus on again, this rite of passage of graduation, that it's more than just walking across the stage and getting a diploma that there is a great transition and shift in in roles and responsibilities between the parents and the children and to really honor that this massive shift that's about to happen that this person is going to go off and be independent for the first time probably in their life, and what that means in their relationship and individually for each other. He comes from a strict research background having spent several years with hands-on R&D in the fields of molecular medicine and microbiology at the University of Iowa. He left University research to take a position as the U.S. Business Development and Product Development lead for Amano Enzyme, USA. Amano is one of the world's largest suppliers of therapeutic enzymes used in the dietary supplement and pharmaceutical industries in North America. Kiran also established a Clinical Research Organization where he designed and conducted dozens of human clinical trials in human nutrition. Kiran is also a co-founder and partner in Nu Science Trading, LLC.; a nutritional technology development, research and marketing company in the U.S. Dietary Supplement and Medical Food markets. Most recently, Kiran is acting as the Chief Scientific Officer at Physician's Exclusive, LLC. and Microbiome Labs. He is currently involved in 9 novel human clinical trials on probiotics and the human microbiome. Kiran is also on the Scientific Advisory Board for 5 other companies in the industry. Kiran offers his extensive knowledge and practical application of the latest science on the human microbiome as it relates to health and wellness. Interesting study on how meditation can improve your health! “Psychological stress typically triggers a fight-or-flight response, prompting corticotropin-releasing hormone and catecholamine production in various parts of the body, which ultimately disturbs the microbiota. In the absence of stress, a healthy microbiota produces short-chain fatty acids that exert anti-inflammatory and antitumor effects. During stress, an altered gut microbial population affects the regulation of neurotransmitters mediated by the microbiome and gut barrier function. Meditation helps regulate the stress response, thereby suppressing chronic inflammation states and maintaining a healthy gut-barrier function. Conclusions • The current research team recommends the integration of meditation into conventional health care and wellness models. Concurrently, studies to explore the effects of meditation on human microbiota are warranted.” https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/29306937 It is unique analysis to see what is going on “under the hood” and then we can determine your “areas of opportunity” with nutrition and health building lifestyle habits.  Ideally, we run the full investigation (my Health (RE) Building Packages) with you to see the WHOLE pictures with other labs to help identify more clues of hidden internal sources of chronic stress but at least you can get a head start into learning more about your gut terrain and status of microbiome with BiomeFX lab test.  I can email you a sample lab report if you are curious. The lab test results will provide us with clues towards your areas of opportunities to optimize your health from the inside out.  Read more about the test and analysis on my blog here   As you know, I have been focusing continuing education over the past ten years to become certified as a Functional Nutritional Therapist, Functional Diagnostic Nutrition Practitioner, CHEK Holistic Lifestyle Coach, Ben Greenfield's Kion (plus Superhuman Coach) health coach and more trainings.    Since high school, I was always interested and curious about nutrition, health and exercise as we need it all – as what I term “The WHOLESTIC Method” to be fit and healthy from the inside out.  One of my favorite quotes is “you can't out exercise a bad diet” and “you can't out supplement poor lifestyle habits”.   More than ever, we should be striving to feel our best each day by running well chosen functional lab tests (test and assess instead of guessing!), investigating the external and internal sources of chronic stressors (inflammation) and then creating an individualized “D.R.E.S.S. for Health Success” protocol.  What are you doing now to build your immune system and resiliency?  I have been blogging and podcasting since March about the immune system and ways we can build our resiliency.  Tune in to my weekly blogs and podcasts here.
