Some thoughts (arguments?) on Hugo Mercier's Not Born Yesterday (https://www.amazon.com/Not-Born-Yesterday-Science-Believe/dp/0691178704), which advances the thesis that humans are not as gullible as is commonly thought. This is our second episode on Mercier's work, and we're as intrigued as ever. But this time we have different interpretations of his thesis, so it's a good thing the man himself is coming on soon to sort us out. We discuss If humans are less gullible than is commonly believed Evolution of Communication Theory Gazelles jumping in the air Are humans too stubborn? Is one of your hosts who shall go unnamed too stubborn? When do humans actually change their minds? Does Mercier's work conflict with Popper? How much of our reasoning is motivated reasoning? While the media fixates on one awful thing Trump and Vance are doing, it ignores lots of others. And that's exactly how the Trump campaign wants it. Today, Josh explains the history of campaigns purposely fanning flames of controversy in the media so that their preferred issues dominate the news cycle. Meanwhile, will that same gullibility lead the media to fall for anti-Israel protests scheduled on October 7, when they should be reporting on what happened in the most evil terrorist attack of modern times? Josh has a plan to push the media to avoid this, and you can help. Plus, Trump is now claiming that if he loses, Jewish people will “have a lot to do” with it. Josh explains why this is so dangerous. He also wrote an op-ed about it for the biggest paper in a crucial swing state.

Serendipity Sessions returns again...for the second time in a row! To be honest, our last episode wasn't a true Serendipity Session because it involved one primary topic and Ryan was pretty prepared to discuss it. So Ryan ruined it. Blame Ryan. But the good news is that this episode is a true Serendipity Session! Serendipity Sessions was designed to be a stream-of-consciousness series so we can stumble upon moments of divine inspiration and clarity without planning anything in advance. In that spirit, we invite you to simply hit play and explore these topics in real-time alongside us. But if you'd like a teaser of what we cover in this episode, here are some hints (with links to resources we referenced in this episode): Starting a new life is hard when you're not ready to let go of the old oneAnxiety and excitement are similarEmbracing miracles (Book: E-Squared by Pam Grout)Being gullible is actually a serious problem (Article Link)Will there be an earthquake on June 6, 2024? Unlike our subject-specific deep dives and guest interview episodes, Serendipity Sessions is a raw reflection of the genuine bond we share. We have no rules and no episode notes in advance, just a free-flowing exchange of thoughts and emotions. It's an exploration of the outer banks of consciousness where untamed treasures are hidden away. We believe one sudden insight can hold immense value, far beyond most meticulously planned discussions. Each session is a unique encounter with chance as we defy routine and enjoy a spontaneous dance with spirituality. How Broken Trust is Poisoning American DemocracyIn this episode, host David Beckmeyer interviews Andreas Schedler about his research on political polarization in the United States. Schedler challenges the traditional understanding of polarization as a simple left-right divide and argues that the breakdown of trust is a fundamental factor driving hostility between political factions. He explains that people increasingly believe the other side is willing to break the rules of democracy to win, leading to a dangerous lack of trust. Schedler discusses the importance of recognizing these perceptions and engaging in dialogue to bridge the divide. He also highlights the need for critical thinking and self-reflection to overcome polarization.Support the showShow Notes:https://outrageoverload.net/ Follow me, David Beckemeyer, on Twitter @mrblog. From the divine creation of the world all the way to the resurrection of Christ, Christians are predisposed to believe in extraordinary things. Or at least, this is what the cultural wisdom of the age would have us believe. But are Christians really uniquely gullible because they affirm the existence of the supernatural? This is a selection of highlights from episode #180 of The 80,000 Hours Podcast. These aren't necessarily the most important, or even most entertaining parts of the interview — and if you enjoy this, we strongly recommend checking out the full episode:Hugo Mercier on why gullibility and misinformation are overratedAnd if you're finding these highlights episodes valuable, please let us know by emailing podcast@80000hours.org.Highlights put together by Simon Monsour, Milo McGuire, and Dominic Armstrong
The World Economic Forum's global risks survey of 1,400 experts, policymakers, and industry leaders ranked misinformation and disinformation as the number one global risk over the next two years — ranking it ahead of war, environmental problems, and other threats from AI.And the discussion around misinformation and disinformation has shifted to focus on how generative AI or a future super-persuasive AI might change the game and make it extremely hard to figure out what was going on in the world — or alternatively, extremely easy to mislead people into believing convenient lies. But this week's guest, cognitive scientist Hugo Mercier, has a very different view on how people form beliefs and figure out who to trust — one in which misinformation really is barely a problem today, and is unlikely to be a problem anytime soon. As he explains in his book Not Born Yesterday, Hugo believes we seriously underrate the perceptiveness and judgement of ordinary people.Links to learn more, summary, and full transcript. In this interview, host Rob Wiblin and Hugo discuss:How our reasoning mechanisms evolved to facilitate beneficial communication, not blind gullibility. How Hugo makes sense of our apparent gullibility in many cases — like falling for financial scams, astrology, or bogus medical treatments, and voting for policies that aren't actually beneficial for us.Rob and Hugo's ideas about whether AI might make misinformation radically worse, and which mass persuasion approaches we should be most worried about. Why Hugo thinks our intuitions about who to trust are generally quite sound, even in today's complex information environment. The distinction between intuitive beliefs that guide our actions versus reflective beliefs that don't.Why fake news and conspiracy theories actually have less impact than most people assume.False beliefs that have persisted across cultures and generations — like bloodletting and vaccine hesitancy — and theories about why.And plenty more.Chapters:The view that humans are really gullible (00:04:26)The evolutionary argument against humans being gullible (00:07:46) Open vigilance (00:18:56)Intuitive and reflective beliefs (00:32:25)How people decide who to trust (00:41:15)Redefining beliefs (00:51:57)Bloodletting (01:00:38)Vaccine hesitancy and creationism (01:06:38)False beliefs without skin in the game (01:12:36)One consistent weakness in human judgement (01:22:57)Trying to explain harmful financial decisions (01:27:15)Astrology (01:40:40)Medical treatments that don't work (01:45:47)Generative AI, LLMs, and persuasion (01:54:50)Ways AI could improve the information environment (02:29:59)Producer and editor: Keiran HarrisAudio Engineering Lead: Ben CordellTechnical editing: Simon Monsour and Milo McGuireTranscriptions: Katy Moore

“Martin Kantor Kantor advises in his 2006 book The Psychopathology of Everyday Life: How Antisocial Personality Disorder Affects All of Us that vulnerability to psychopathic manipulators involves being too:[35] Dependent – dependent people need to be loved and are therefore gullible and liable to say yes to something to which they should say no. Immature – has impaired judgment and so tends to believe exaggerated advertising claims. Naïve – cannot believe there are dishonest people in the world or takes it for granted that if there are any, they will not be allowed to prey on others. Impressionable – overly seduced by charmers. Trusting – people who are honest often assume that everyone else is honest. They are more likely to commit themselves to people they hardly know without checking credentials, etc., and less likely to question so-called experts. Carelessness – not giving sufficient amount of thought or attention to harm or errors. Lonely – lonely people may accept any offer of human contact. A psychopathic stranger may offer human companionship for a price. Narcissistic – narcissists are prone to falling for unmerited flattery. Impulsive – make snap decisions. Altruistic – the opposite of psychopathic: too honest, too fair, too empathetic. Frugal – cannot say no to a bargain even if they know the reason it is so cheap. Materialistic – easy prey for loan sharks or get-rich-quick schemes. Greedy – the greedy and dishonest may fall prey to a psychopath who can easily entice them to act in an immoral way. Masochistic – lack self-respect and so unconsciously let psychopaths take advantage of them. They think they deserve it out of a sense of guilt. The elderly – the elderly can become fatigued and less capable of multi-tasking. When hearing a sales pitch they are less likely to consider that it could be a con. They are prone to giving money to someone with a hard-luck story. Bill Whittle and Alfonzo Rachel analyze the morality of the great events of our day twice each week on The Virtue Signal. They can do this only through the generosity of our Members. Welcome to The Nonlinear Library, where we use Text-to-Speech software to convert the best writing from the Rationalist and EA communities into audio. This is: How we failed, published by Jan Kulveit on March 23, 2022 on The Effective Altruism Forum. Here “we” means the broader EA and rationalist communities. Learning from failures is just as important as learning from successes. This post describes a few cases of mistakes and failures which seem interesting from the learning perspective. Failure to improve US policy in the first wave Early in the pandemic, the rationality community was right about important things (e.g. masks), often very early on. We won the epistemic fight, and the personal instrumental fight. (Consider our masks discourse, or Microcovid use, or rapid testing to see our friends.) At the same time, the network distance from the core of the community to e.g. people in the CDC is not that large: OpenPhil is a major funder for the Johns Hopkins Center for Health Security, and the network distance from CHS to top public health institutions is presumably small. As such, we could say the US rationality community failed instrumentally, given their apparent short distance to influence.Contrast this with the influence of LessWrong on UK policy via a single reader, Dominic Cummings. Or our influence on Czech policy (see What we tried). Also, contrast this with the #masks4all movement. This movement was founded by the writer and speaker Petr Ludwig (pre COVID, he was developing something like his own version of rationality and critical thinking, independent of the LessWrong cluster). After the success of grass-roots activity in DIY mask-making in Czechia, which led to the whole country starting to use the masks within a week or so, he tried to export the "masks work" and “you can make them at home” meme globally. While counterfactuals are hard, this seems a major success, likely speeding up mask uptake in Western countries by weeks (consider the Marginal Revolution praise). Where was the “microcovid calculator for countries”? (see EpiFor funding and medium-range models.) Overreaction through 2021 Personal reactions within the community in February 2020 were sometimes exemplary; apparent overshoots (like copper tape on surfaces, postal package quarantines) were reasonable ex ante. But the community was slow to update its behaviour in response to improved estimates of infection-fatality ratee, long COVID, and knowledge of aerosol and droplet transmission. Anecdotally, the community was slow to return to relatively safe things like outdoor activities, even after full vaccination. While your risk tolerance is a given quantity in decision-making, my impression is that many people's behaviour did not match the risk tolerance implicit in their other daily habits. Inverse gullibility Many large institutions had a bad track record during the pandemic, and the heuristic “do not update much from their announcements” served many people well. However, in places the community went beyond this, to non-updates from credible sources and anti-updates from institutions. Gullibility is believing things excessively: taking the claim “studies show” as certain. Inverse gullibility is disbelieving things excessively: failing to update at all when warranted, or even to invert the update. Example: the COVID research summaries of the FDA are often good; it's in the policy guidance section that the wheels come off. But I often see people write off all FDA material. My broad guess is that people who run off simple models like "governments are evil and lie to you" are very unlikely to be able to model governments well, and very unlikely to understand parts of the solution space where governments can do important and useful things. Failing to persuade reviewers that important methods were valid More locally to our research: we used skilled forecasters for many of our estimates, as an input for our hybrid of mathematical and judgmental prediction. ...
After weeks of randomness, the guys turned to Craig for some focus. But considering he has trouble even spelling "outline" the guys managed to decipher a few themes during the noise. Gambling. Gullibility. Christian lies. Personalized movie names. Embroidered pillows. For one week only, it's all on the table, and all from the mind of the mindless.

Paul, April and Jeremy discuss the Southern Baptist Convention's decision to have a closed investigation of the more than 700 sexual abuse cases within SBC churches. The messengers wanted an open investigation and full transparency of all findings, and the higher ups at the SBC voted against the will of the people to protect themselves. So, they discuss the implications of this and how widespread abuse is in churches beyond the SBC. They also talk about the gullibility of evangelicals and how 19 of the top 20 Christian Facebook pages were controlled by foreign troll farms. https://www.relevantmagazine.com/culture/tech-gaming/almost-all-of-facebooks-top-christian-pages-are-run-by-foreign-troll-farms/ The show ends with some improv sermon illustrations. Religious Indoctrination Of Children In this podcast we look at the indoctrination of children into religion and the problems that arise from that. We wanted to be quite clear that the parents are not to blame, but we ask simply that theist parents just take a step back and think how this religious indoctrination may affect their children. The future of humanity is fragile. Our world has some spectacular issues. The act of putting God and the superstitions of the past behind us is the first step toward a more civil, rational and connected world. Teaching our children that it's OK to believe in the supernatural and superstition is setting them up for failure, to be gullible later in life when it really matters, as well as actively enabling the stunting of their education. Robbing them of the ability to use scepticism, and critical thinking is no way to help them approach modern life. Gullibility is how people walk into social indoctrination; it's how freedoms are eroded, it's how the dark regimes are created, survive and flourish. In the UK we have an organisation called 'Truth In Science' that promotes intelligent design. They are simply a creationist organisation promoting the 'teach the controversy' campaign started by the 'Discovery Institute' in the USA, which wants to drive creationist teaching into the scientific curriculums in schools, initially in America, but ultimately into the education systems across the western world and beyond. Both of these organisations try to give the false impression that they are legitimate scientific organisations, who are simply asking us to be sceptical, but not sceptical of wild claims such as the existence of god or gods, but the supposed wild claims and misconceptions of evolution. Giving the impression they are a scientific organisation (which they are NOT) is a desperate and dishonest approach, a devious deception that says everything about the moral and ethical code they have decided to live by. They will lie to manipulate and brainwash people, and the people they really want to manipulate and brainwash are the young. They want to lie to children, this is what angers many people who oppose having religion, the supernatural and pseudoscience taught as science in our schools. People will believe the craziest things. We talked this morning at a Bible study about people who run catfish accounts, and how gullible people are fooled into sending money to people who are manipulating them. I remember a viral episode of Dr. Phil back in 2015 about a woman who was swindled out of 1.4 million dollars. Well...there are catfish preachers too. False teachers that twist truth to manipulate their listeners for dishonest gain. We must test the spirits, and not be spiritually gullible. Search the Scriptures, and learn for yourself.
Rep. Ro Khanna was on point about these billionaire astronauts being parasites to us all. And it is much deeper and exploitative. MSNBC Hallie Jackson got one dissenter from the gullible and programmed euphoria surrounding newly minted billionaire astronaut Jeff Bezos and his Blue Origin team successful 10-minute roundtrip to space. Democratic Congressman Ro Khanna hit the nail on the head. "I don't think I have heard of a bigger oxymoron than talking about billionaires going up into space and then using the word "democratizing," Rep. Ro Khanna said. "Here are the facts. Amazon has refused to pay any tax in 2017 or 2018. Jeff Bezos didn't pay tax two of those years. And now they are spending millions of dollars that could have been taxed, using that to go up into space."--- If you like what we do please do the following!
