This episode's guest is Mental game Coach Jared Tendler. Jared is the author of a new book, “The Mental Game of Trading”.Jared has worked as a mental game coach with golfers and poker players and has written extensively about the mental game of poker.  The mental aspect of trading is probably the hardest and most challenging part of trading to manage and overcome. You can be strong technically, and may posses a great process or system, but it is the mental side which often causes the most frustration for traders. This is not dissimilar to what happens in sport and gaming; hence is why we were so keen to talk to Jared, who has made dealing with this aspect so central to his work.Jared talks about the blindspots people have in seeing the mental challenges and problems they face. He say they then then compound this error by trying to fix their costly and recurring trading habits by trying to improve their technical skills, when the the real root of these mistakes reside within each person at a psychological level.  Other issues Jared talks about include: - Issues around choking, which is common to all areas of high performance.- The importance of getting 'In The Zone'.- How Jared’s approach, as featured in his book, seeks to bridge the gap from knowledge of psychological issues to helping people make transformations. - Many other areas of the mental game which will fascinating to people involved in and curious about trading and investment roles. Links to Jared and his new book: Webpage: https://jaredtendler.com/Twitter: https://twitter.com/jaredtendler  Linkedin: https://www.linkedin.com/in/jaredtendler/Book: The Mental Game of Trading: A System for Solving Problems with Greed, Fear, Anger, Confidence, and Discipline

Breaking a bone or experiencing a severe cold can make life a little unbearable. Fortunately, a doctor's appointment later, you're practically good to go. However, with spiritual matters, it gets a little complicated than that. Firstly, most of us don't even acknowledge that we're hurting, which makes seeking help even harder. This is mostly because spiritual and mental health issues are often shamed and ridiculed.    Deep down, we all know we aren't immune to life's lemons. Thus, whenever unforeseen things happen, our weaknesses are usually compromised, making us vulnerable. Vulnerability generates fear, which is why most people would rather suffer than seek help.   Of the thousands of people trying to find themselves, only a few manage to do so, and even fewer openly share how they did it. With us today is Jared Schuster, a holistic life coach who spent years learning from Yogis and Shamans, all in the hope of finding himself. Never has this been more true than it is now. The unspoken rule among entrepreneurs and innovators is to forego self-care in the interest of supporting their teams and companies. The result? Burnout. When entrepreneurs fail to keep pace, their teams languish from the lack of clear vision. Successful entrepreneur, Jared Graybeal wrote The Self Help Book as an easy, self-care primer for folks new to the genre. (Check out his TedX talk for a sense of his personal “self-care” style!) The book walks through 6 practical steps for growth, including confidence, connections, competence, character, clarity and commitment. Jared's mission is to encourage, educate, and empower others to live happier, healthier lives. Jared is a NASM-certified personal trainer, fitness nutrition specialist, behavioral change specialist, CrossFit Level 2 trainer, and corrective exercise specialist with an education in marketing and psychology from the University of North Florida. Jared has done a few cool things, like exhibiting Superfit Foods at Forbes Under 30 and giving a TEDx Talk on nutrition and mental health, and every day I get to work hard at doing what I love. What better way to begin discussions of the value of self-care for entrepreneurs and their teams? Jared will teach you how to put yourself first while coaching your teams through the challenges presented by anything from COVID to rapid growth! WHAT YOU’LL LEARN: What made his wife Krista suggest they get into real estate investing What Jared’s and Krista’s parents approach to life and work impacted them What Jared thought of his first real estate investing seminar with Don Campbell of REIN Why he skipped the last day but his wife stuck around, and how that changed everything Why an investment club CRUSHED their investment goals Why his ‘judgement’ of others at these clubs CHANGED everything Rich Dad, Poor Dad is the key His first house was a disaster, SO many mistakes He bought 3 houses his first year, 11 in the second year, and 64 in the third year! Why it’s important to vet your mentors - many are coaches or mentors and have NO properties of their own Why his dad turned him down for a Joint Venture, and why Jared did it anyway! Why trust is everything, and why he failed as a salesperson initially until he started BUILDING relationships, NOT selling Why coaches and mentors help to REDUCE fear in new investors Why his first coaching client was sold on his services and offered $750,000 for investment cash for 10 or 11 JV properties Why this JV experienced issues, and how Jared and Krista bought out the investors Why the recession of 2008-2009 caused him to lose $18,000 a month! Is Climate Change Fixable? A Conversation With California’s EPA Secretary | This episode is brought to you by BiOptimizers, Thrive Market, and Beekeepers NaturalsWe’re divorced from nature and disconnected from wild places. I think this has really hurt us in multiple ways, some of which we are still figuring out, but especially in the way it’s allowed people to desecrate the land, air, and water we rely on for life. Yet people are so resistant to acknowledging climate change and what needs to be done. This could be because of the doom-and-gloom approach many folks take that can be outright depressing or the overwhelming amount of inputs that cause people to simply shut down. It might also just be hard to wrap our heads around how it’s possible to destroy something as vast as the ocean and sky. Today on The Doctor’s Farmacy, I’m hoping to provide you with a different perspective on climate change revolving around hope and positivity. Yes, we still have a long way to go, but we’re seeing some great initiatives and outcomes in places like California where the climate and environment are deemed worthy investments. My guest today is the perfect person to share about those projects, challenges, and victories. Jared Blumenfeld is California’s Secretary for Environmental Protection. Appointed by Governor Gavin Newsom in January, he is one of America’s most innovative environmental leaders, with more than 25 years of environmental policy and management experience at the local, national and international levels. They honestly usually do not have significant full-time staff or if they do, it’s like a legislative assistant. I’ve been one. It’s not a huge policy research team that they have access to, so there’s this enormous need for serious but also digestible research and analysis, and I think it makes a huge difference. “I think there’s more drum sets and pianos collecting dust than are being sold each year.” Jared Falk is the CEO and co-founder of Drumeo. Jared was a private drum instructor earlier in his life but eventually he began to integrate his drum lessons with media after a student of his, Rick Kettner posted a heel-toe instructional video on a Pearldrummers forum. It was the response of this video that got Jared’s gears turning. Unfortunately, Rick had to take down the post because of the incredibly high cost for bandwidth due to the excessive number of people downloading the video. In response to the video’s success, Jared proposed to Rick that they should create a video which would become, “One-Handed Drum Roll” which was filmed in Jared’s shed at the time. This video was produced in 2005. Fast-forward fifteen-years later and we have Drumeo what it is today.  Jared often says that if he didn’t go in the direction he did with Drumeo, he would have likely worked on his parents’ duck farm “Fraser Valley Duck & Goose”. While working for his parents’ farm Jared would drive to Chinatown, Vancouver selling ducks to different barbeque shops. His goal was to drive there with a full load of product and return home empty. Repeating that process over and over must have been instrumental in teaching Jared the skills of communication and business. So, when you combine strong business acumen and a love for drumming you end up with a businessman whose business is selling drumming. Recently, Jared has been standing up strongly towards some of the issues he sees within the industry. Partly out of self-preservation he has chosen to find ways to not just create more drummers but also to keep active drummers engaged with their instrument. Drumeo is constantly innovating within the tech space to create enticing methods of gauging a drummer’s growth with their educational materials, inspire the community and support those who need to regain their passion for drumming. Jared endorses Paiste and Evans.   You Will Hear About…. The story of how Drumeo got off the ground. What is the Drumeo Method is. Jared’s thoughts on making your strengths stronger as a drummer. The stagnation that exists in the drum industry. How Jared balances his personal life amongst Drumeo. Some reasons why we think drumming is great for youth. The process of creating the Drumeo Festival.   Why Should You Listen? Jared is a very unique individual within the industry. He has knowledge and perspectives that are specialized because of what he does. This insight can only really come from a handful of people in the drum industry and perhaps even less within the tech/media space. Jared loves data and studying the market and uses that data to make better decisions within Drumeo. In this interview you will hear about his thoughts on the current state of the industry, how he and Drumeo are making efforts to keep drummers drumming and how he balances this all within his personal life.   Jared’s Socials Instagram Facebook Twitter Drumeo Website   Follow ‘Drumeo Gab’ Instagram Facebook

One of the challenges of agency life is that typically everything we sell is a custom job. It’s tough to build in efficiencies or systemize our production when we never make the same deliverable twice. But it doesn’t have to be that way. Back in Episode 100, we discussed the idea of structuring your agency as a wonder bread factory vs. an artisanal bakery and there are different pros and cons for each. Website By Tonight’s Jared Gold successfully transformed his agency from an artisanal bakery into a wonder bread factory for web development. And in this episode of Build A Better Agency, Jared joins us to share the lessons he learned throughout the process so you can apply them in your own agency. It’s important to revisit those strategies and elaborate, and that becomes a part of your identity. When you sit down with your family around the dinner table, the storytelling begins. Have you ever noticed who is doing the storytelling? Typically, women and mothers in families are the ones who tend to elaborate and go in-depth with their storytelling, while men oftentimes may be more reserved with their explanations. The ways that families reminisce and dialogue about their lives have a significant impact on how children develop their adult identities. Humans are storytelling creatures, but when men are not supported in developing their storytelling muscles, it can lead to lost pieces of their identities. In this episode, I talk with Dr. Jared DeFife about his work as a clinical psychologist. When we begin, we discuss his interest in supporting men who deal with rejection sensitivity, depression, and more. Specifically, we discuss how these experiences take on different characteristics in men than women, and how storytelling may impact men’s ability to connect with himself and heal.  Take a listen to learn more about how to put yourself back in the author’s seat and regain your narrative identity. About Dr. Jared DeFife: Dr. Jared DeFife is a clinical psychologist in private practice. He’s also an adjunct assistant professor in the Department of Psychology and Behavioral Science at the Emory University School of Medicine. Jared is passionate about helping “intense” people integrate interpersonal and personality-focused therapies drawing from schema-focused and mentalization-based therapies into their lives. Some Questions I Ask: What’s the template for the type of clients you attract? (11:32) Do you think it’s hard for men to respond to depression screeners? (15:06) When does the narrative disappear for men? (20:05) How does one begin to re-author their life? (31:23) What resources would you recommend for learning more about this? (52:47)   In This Episode, You Will Learn: About Jared’s work with men who experience rejection sensitivity and depression. (2:53) How Jared transformed his approach as a therapist to connect with and reach men. (10:45) How depression manifests itself differently in men and women. (11:52) How language use and narratives impact how men perceive their struggles. (16:09) What different types of emotionally unavailable men look like. Where do investment experts come from? Do they hatch from Ivy League MBA programs? Or is it possible to have one of the most gifted investment thinkers emerge from rural America? Jared Kizer grew up on a farm in Tennessee in a small town of 5,000 people. Growing up an avid baseball player, finance was never on his radar. A series of injuries led Jared to an interest in physical therapy, and for a time it looked like that would be how he’d spend his career. Fresh out of physical therapy school and married to a lovely dietician, Jared realized that neither he or his wife had the financial know-how to guide their businesses. Jared went to the local bookstore in search of resources. There, in the quiet aisles of Barnes and Noble, Jared came upon “The Only Guide to a Winning Investment Strategy You’ll Ever Need”, written by the person who would become his future colleague at Buckingham Strategic Wealth, Larry Swedroe. On a whim, Jared reached out to Larry, and eventually their correspondence led to a job interview. While Jared lacked experience, he proved to be a natural fit in the finance world. Several years into his work at Buckingham, Jared received national acclaim for an article he co-authored, entitled, “The Death of Diversification Has Been Greatly Exaggerated.” Since then, Jared’s analyses have been published multiple times, including a book he co-authored with Larry Swedroe himself. Now a CFA and CIO of Buckingham, Jared helps people make sense of this often-complicated world on a daily basis. He even maintains a blog devoted to finance education at MultifactorWorld.com. Jared Nichols is a futurist, advisor, and faculty member at the University of Tennessee’s Haslam College of Business, in Graduate and Executive Education. He is the founder of The Foresight Academy where he teaches leaders, teams, and individuals, how to think like futurists so they can create the best future possible, for themselves and the people they serve. Jared is sought out by leaders, organizations, and entrepreneurs to help them identify how emerging trends in technology, media, business, and public policy, may fundamentally change society and shape the future. What you’ll learn about in this episode: How Jared responded when he came to a crossroad in his life and in his business. The way Jared was able to reach and teach more people by leveraging the tools and technology available to him. What Jared meant when he described himself as feeling misaligned in what he was doing before and what it took to realign him and his mission. Authenticity. Why Jared believes it’s so important to help you understand your motivations and get them across to others. Clarity. Why Jared believes it doesn’t matter what kind of people you want to serve, what industries you want to reach, or who you’re trying to connect with. Clarity is the most important thing you need to have about who you are and how that translates into the business you’re working in. Why having the right mentor and the right coach can sometimes help you cut through the noise to help you sort that out and find the clarity you require. Identifying the mission became Jared’s first priority. Once he did that, he was able to shift focus to leveraging technology to reach more people for the sake of his mission. What a “futurist” is and how thinking like one can help teams create their best possible futures. How Jared came up with the idea for the Foresight Academy and what students will learn through the 12-week program. Jared’s four Cs. Conscious. Curious. Creative. Collaborative. Why Jared believes it’s essential to challenge the norms by asking better questions, like what “else” might be possible. Why Jared includes a call to action in each part of his course and why he thinks giving students “quick wins” is so important. Jared’s belief that what you think about the future is far less important, in the grand scheme of things, than HOW you think about the future. Ways to contact Jared: jared@thenewfuturist.com

Jared Ward is a Dad, a Husband, Olympian, runner, and coach. In that order. Our interview is wide ranging from running form and which shoes can best support your body’s preferred running style, injuries he has worked to overcome, and how to prepare for and run well in the heat, from both a physical and mental perspective. The real gems in this interview are all the mental preparation tips we cover.    If you want to learn some tips for focusing on the mental skills you need to succeed, this interview provides you tools you can implement into your running and racing strategy no matter what your overall pace might be. Today’s Guest Jared Ward is a runner, Coach, and a dad, husband and Mormon. He was born in Utah and went to Brigham Young University where he got a degree in Statistics. He is a 6x NCAA All-American, and a 2016 Olympic Marathoner, finishing 6th overall and running his personal best time at 2:11:30. He teaches Statistics at Brigham Young University. What you will learn about: How Jared has explored biomechanics from the standpoint of the statistical side of the research How you can work and perform though injury but doing so can set you back longer than being proactive and dealing with it up front with physical therapy and rest. You can’t fake it through a marathon. Whether Jared felt the Boston conditions might have been the type of day when he could have performed well (in hindsight of course) In warm weather marathons it pays to be a bit cautious at the start of a long race to ensure you have energy at the end, taking extra water early on, slowing slightly can go a long way to helping you finish strong. Performance starts to suffer when you lose 2-4% of your body weight in fluids, which is increasingly an issue if you are a middle of the pack runner and are out there longer. Hot weather tips: wearing a hat and sunglasses, carrying ice in your hands, or pour water over your head. Studies have shown that increasing your blood plasma by training for at least 10 days can help your body increase the plasma (and fluid storage) capability in your body. How you focus during a race is important. You should have a broad focus at the start on how you feel and what is going on around you. But as you get to the end of a marathon you want to be focused narrowly on your strategy, how your competitors are faring, vs how you are feeling, because you are not going to feel good so need to take your focus elsewhere. We need to have a list of positive things that can help keep us focused. As part of his academic research he learned that Boston Qualifiers were running the start of the race more conservatively and closer to their average pace overall than those who didn’t qualify, and were also better at reading and taking advantage of the terrain of the course. Keeping a training log of how your training has gone gives you the data you need to determine about what pace you are ready for so that you don’t overshoot your pace because taper has made you feel so well rested. Start with a can do mindset rather than a “have to” mindset, it will help reduce your anxiety. It will help you to run the pace you are prepared to run. You can only run the best race and the best effort you have. If you do that it is liberating.  How Jared manages the balance of family and career with his running. Setting your priorities for the day and then focusing your energy and schedule on those things lets you get done what is most important. If you remove the things that just pass the time and focus on what is truly important it is amazing what you can accomplish. Jared’s focus next is on the NY Marathon in the fall and is excited for preparing for that race and some half marathons in Europe as tune up races.   Inspirational Quotes: If you can harness the power of your mind, it is amazing what your body can do. Your mind has a focus limit as well, saving some of the mental gas tank is critical. You have to trust your training and the system you have followed. Then run your best and let the rest happen.
