This independent psychological thriller was written & directed by Chuck Konzelman and is based on the 2016 novel, “A Nefarious Plot”. The movie stars Jordan Belfi & Sean Patrick Flanery. The film follows a psychiatrist who investigates an inmate on Death Row who claims to be a demon. The movie hit theaters in April of 2023 before landing on Prime Video at the end of the year.

Nefarious is a 2023 exorcism style film based on the source material A Nefarious Plot. Hatched onto the big screen, this flick takes on a different direction than previous exorcism type of movies. Nefarious is a demon who has possessed a man who is about to be executed for his crimes. Before execution it is required by law that he has a psychological assessment to determine if he is mentally insane, and unfit for execution. The film captures that dialogue between the demon and his assessor in a way that would creep out even the worst violent offenders and in many ways is very simular to the book by C.S. Lewis called the Screwtape Letters.Directed by Chuck Konzelman, and written by Chuck Konzelman and Cary Solomon. Starring Sean Patrick Flanery as Nefarious and Jordan Belfi as Dr. James Martin. Also fearing Tom Ohmer as Warden Tom Moss. The film is loosely based on the book by Steve Deace.

Serial killers and demon possession isn't necessarily an original concept in horror media. But a recently released film on VOD after its initial run at theaters in April 2023 gives an interesting twist to the subgenre. The movie is called NEFARIOUS (2023) and gained a lot of traction early with a large push from social media as well as fans of horror films in general.Dr. James Martin (Jordan Belfi) is quickly put on the case of serial killer Edward Wayne Brady (Sean Patrick Flanery). It is execution day, and Dr. Martin has studied the case because he has been designated as the psychiatrist to determine whether Brady is mentally cognizant to face execution on death row. Arriving at the prison, he finds a very meek man that has bursts of energy and ire. But Brady claims he is possessed by a demon, and Dr. Martin begins to believe his split personality may be something more.The movie was co-written/co-directed by Chuck Konzelman and Cary Solomon. The story is based off a manifesto novel A NEFARIOUS PLOT by Steve Deace. The film received mediocre reviews from critics but gained rave reviews from audiences. 'God's Not Dead' Filmmakers Cary Solomon and Chuck Konzelman Talk Their New Film 'Nefarious' in Theaters Friday, April 14, 2023.   'Nafarious' Tag Line: On the day of his scheduled execution, a convicted serial killer gets a psychiatric evaluation during which he claims he is a demon, and further claims that before their time is over, the psychiatrist will commit three murders of his own. Known for their 'God's Not Dead' franchise, filmmakers Cary Solomon and Chuck Konzelman face off with the devil in their latest thriller, 'Nefarious' starring Jordan Belfi as psychiatrist Dr. James Martin and Sean Patrick Flannery as the serial killer who identifies himself by the name Nefarious. Shot in a little over two weeks, the 'Nefarious' faced some supernatural events during the short shooting schedule. Belfi became a father 30-minutes before filming began, their exorcist priest who was to bless the set nearly died on set and a whole host of other demonic entities were trying to stop the production of this movie from being completed. However, Solomon and Konzelman remained true to their faith and forced forward continuing with the movie based on the novels by Steve Deace, 'A Nefarious Plot', which was released in 2016, and 'A Nefarious Carol', released in 2020. But even as the movie was gearing up for release, the project was hit with an R rating by the Motion Picture Association that the filmmakers say was an unfair attempt to keep the movie from reaching a wide audience. Per vederlo bisogna aprire gli occhi, quelli fisici ma anche quelli della mente. Si potrebbe riassumere così la morale di Unplanned, il film su Abby Johnson, la direttrice di una clinica texana della Planned Parenthood che passa dalla parte dei pro-life quando vede coi suoi occhi che l'aborto è l'eliminazione di un bambino e comprende che, diversamente da quanto scrive ipocritamente nel suo statuto, l'organizzazione non cerca di prevenire le gravidanze indesiderate, ma di fatturare sempre di più aumentando costantemente il numero delle interruzioni di gestazione. Trattasi di storia vera e di personaggi reali.Non fosse per la tragicità dell'argomento, farebbe quasi ridere constatare che il fuoco di sbarramento che critici cinematografici e militanti della causa pro-choice hanno concentrato sul film abbia per oggetto le immagini raccapriccianti e i dettagli cruenti di tutto ciò che riguarda gli aborti e i corpi delle donne su cui viene praticato. Da tempo sui grandi schermi e nei teatri si vede assolutamente di tutto, non c'è più nulla di abbastanza sacro, riservato, inaccessibile, turpe, disgustoso, osceno che non possa essere rappresentato.Il valore estetico e sociale di qualsiasi rappresentazione è considerato superiore a ogni tabù. Con la curiosa eccezione dell'aborto, a quanto pare. Ma soprattutto fa cadere le braccia l'ostilità pregiudiziale che impedisce di cogliere l'originalità del film. [...]LA CONVERSIONE DI ABBYCi sono almeno due contenuti sorprendenti che dovrebbero balzare agli occhi perché scavalcano la barriera delle contrapposte visioni partigiane. Il primo riguarda proprio il vedere, il cambiamento che determina il vedere qualcosa che fino a quel momento era rimasto invisibile. A "convertire" Abby Johnson non è il sangue che cola dalle gambe delle ragazze, i corpi smembrati dei feti, gli sguardi smarriti e depressi delle giovanissime sia al momento di entrare che nel momento di uscire dalla clinica. Lei stessa ha vissuto l'esperienza di due aborti, e il secondo, quello indotto chimicamente e vissuto nella solitudine di casa, è stato un'esperienza dolorosissima e truculenta, giorni di un limbo insanguinato nell'angoscia della propria morte incombente.Abby è rimasta impassibile quando la direttrice della clinica l'ha condotta nella cella dove sono conservati i feti fatti a pezzetti, li ha scrutati come se guardasse le ali delle farfalle, e con questo si è meritata il posto che l'altra le lascia. Non è una persona che si fa impressionare dal sangue e dai cadaveri. Tanto meno la mettono in crisi il silenzioso dissenso di genitori e marito, orripilati della sua professione ma mai ostili, o i manifestanti antiaborto che inveiscono o che pregano pacificamente lungo la recinzione della clinica, compresi quelli che cercano il dialogo.Ha certezze benpensanti. Che vanno in crisi una prima volta quando Planned Parenthood batte cassa: altro che aborto raro e sicuro, soluzione estrema quando la contraccezione fallisce; quelli di Houston hanno bisogno di aumentare la produttività per tenere in piedi la baracca, e questo si fa incrementando il numero delle interruzioni di gravidanza, puntando sugli aborti chimicamente indotti perché garantiscono un margine di guadagno maggiore. E Planned Parenthood, che diffonde contraccezione e pratica aborti, funziona letteralmente come i fast-food: non sono gli hamburger (leggi: i contraccettivi) a generare i profitti, ma le patatine fritte e le bevande gasate. Perciò lasciate da parte gli ideali, se volete continuare ad avere una busta paga...IL PECCATORE NON È MAI IDENTIFICATO COL SUO PECCATODopo che si sono aperti gli occhi della mente, è il turno di quelli del corpo: Abby ha visto tante volte i prodotti di un aborto, ma non ha mai preso parte all'azione. Succede che venga chiamata in sala operatoria, e che sullo schermo veda l'immagine di un feto di 13 settimane, testa e corpo formati, che dà l'idea di cercare di sfuggire disperatamente al risucchio della morte. Invano. È la rivelazione che ribalta la sua visione delle cose. [...] Per Abby quel brevissimo video è il film che decide la sua vita. Tutto cambia prospettiva nel momento in cui vedi la cosa non dopo che è accaduta, ma proprio mentre accade.L'altro contenuto sorprendente è il ritratto del mondo in cui si muovono pro life e pro choice. Chi si aspetta la rappresentazione di uno scontro tipo crociata o tipo rivoluzione russa resta deluso: i fanatici ci sono, ma appartengono alle frange estreme delle alte dirigenti della catena di montaggio degli aborti, intransigenti e disincantate. Alla radicale contrapposizione delle opzioni corrisponde l'evidente buona fede degli uni e degli altri; l'avversario non è mai spogliato della sua umanità, il peccatore non è mai identificato col suo peccato. Abby e Shawn, il giovane leader della Coalition for Life, si relazionano con mansuetudine anche prima della "conversione" di Abby. La quale è sposata con Doug, antiabortista convinto che in lei non vede il mostro che annichilisce bambini in germe, ma l'amabile donna a cui non può rinunciare. [...]La critica secondo cui il film predica ai già convertiti ha senso per quanto riguarda la parte finale del film, ma non coglie il segno: Unplanned si rivolge evidentemente a un pubblico di simpatizzanti della causa antiabortista convinti ma passivi, al fine di renderli attivi e impegnati. E gli argomenti sono concentrati nell'ultima parte. Qui si spiega che Planned Parenthood è un'organizzazione tentacolare finanziata da George Soros, Bill Gates e Warren Buffett, che i gruppi di preghiera pro life fuori dalle cliniche sono combattuti perché è dimostrato che dove si svolgono regolarmente diminuisce il numero delle donne che vi si recano ad abortire, che l'organizzazione creata da Abby Johnson dopo che si è dimessa è riuscita ad aiutare 500 addetti ad abbandonare l'industria dell'aborto. In totale, solo in questo Paese, è riuscito a raccogliere 19 milioni di dollari dallo scorso 29 marzo al 29 agosto.Il successo del film si sta espandendo a macchia d'olio ed è arrivato al punto da diventare il 1° dvd nelle vendite su Amazon. Il co-regista Cary Solomon ha dichiarato che la notizia del successo di vendite del dvd è particolarmente gratificante, vista la quasi totale censura che il film ha subito da parte dei mass media americani. Solomon ha confidato che i responsabili delle produzioni cinematografiche sono normalmente contenti delle vendite di 20.000-30.000 dvd, ma l'ennesima sorpresa di Unplanned è che "abbiamo venduto circa 235.000 [dvd] senza nemmeno fare pubblicità", dal momento che è stato messo in vendita su Amazon solo venerdì 9 agosto.Incredibile miracolo della vita ed ennesima testimonianza di quanto il sentimento umano, di ogni colore, religione e convinzione politica, sia attratto dalla verità e dalla vita umana. "Cosa significa tutto quello che sta accadendo?". Si è chiesto lo stesso Solomon. "Significa che abbiamo una nazione che ha fame di storie sulla vita, ma non solo: di storie vere, di testimonianze che rivelino la verità sulla vita del concepito e sulla crudeltà dell'aborto".Per i produttori il successo che sta avendo la pellicola è una vera e propria grazia di Dio, non tanto e non solo per l'incasso ma soprattutto per il bene diffuso da questa storia nella società americana. «Quando abbiamo iniziato, eravamo molto preoccupati e molto spaventati, poi lo Spirito Santo e ci ha incitato a "non aver paura. Questo film è per la mia gloria"». Aggiunge Solomon: «So che migliaia di persone potrebbero non crederci, ma questo è esattamente quello che è successo».Da parte sua, anche l'altro co-regista, Chuck Konzelman, si è detto stupito di come sta andando il film: "Siamo sorpresi ogni giorno. Il perché è semplice: Unplanned ha il torto di attaccare la più grande azienda di aborti di massa del mondo: Planned Parenthood. Ci sono troppi interessi dietro al "business" dell'aborto... Dico solo questo al pubblico italiano: vedere è il primo passo per capire. Se qualcuno non vuole che la realtà dell'aborto venga mostrata, Unplanned ha la folle pretesa di abbattere questo tabù. Come si colloca Unplanned in questa galleria e cosa significa per lei questo nuovo film?È il film che aspettavo da una vita. È quello che da solo giustifica tutte le fatiche e i sacrifici fatti per la creazione dei Dominus Production. Per chiudere il contratto di questo film ho accettato costi e rischi ben al di sopra delle nostre possibilità, e che sinceramente non avrei mai assunto per nessun'altra pellicola. Da qui molte notti insonni... Distribuirlo in Italia è un lavoro enorme e una responsabilità grande, ma con l'aiuto di tutti i supporter nazionali e territoriali di Dominus possiamo farcela.Il popolo pro vita che aspettava trepidante questo film ha ora un modo concreto per sostenere il progetto Unplanned?Trattandosi del film di denuncia più importante mai uscito in Italia, desidero che la promozione per Unplanned sia più imponente di qualsiasi altra pellicola uscita nel nostro Paese.
