“It felt like there was an earthquake in the running world, and we're seeing these fault lines change everything. And some things are good, and some things are weird.”   As the current American record holder in the 10,000 meters, Molly Huddle was one to watch heading into this year's Olympic Track & Field Trials. But just a few days before the Trials kicked off in Eugene, OR, Molly (who is also the American record holder in the 10 mile, the 20K, and the half-marathon) announced that she wouldn't be racing the 10K after all. She pulled out of the race, citing an injury that she's been dealing with since last year's Olympic Marathon Trials. On this episode, Molly — who represented Team USA at the last two Olympics, in 2012 in the 5000m and in 2016 in the 10,000m — talks about what it was like scratching from the biggest race of the year, and how she's handling the loss of an Olympic cycle and a chance to be on this year's team. She talks about watching her training partner and friend Emily Sisson win the 10K, shares her Trials highlights as a fan of the sport, and reflects on the current state of the running industry as a whole. Plus, Molly talks about what's next, including her running goals, her upcoming book (How She Did It, out next year), and what's on tap for the Keeping Track podcast, which she co-hosts with Roisin McGettigan-Dumas and Alysia Montaño.   SPONSOR: AfterShokz — Visit ontherun.aftershokz.com for 15% off wireless headphones.   What you'll get on this episode: What it was like watching training partner Emily Sisson win the 10000m at the Olympic Track & Field Trials (6:20) What it's been like dealing with an injury for the past year (18:00) Reflecting on racing the Mini 10K a few weeks ago (22:30) Making the decision to scratch from the Trials (35:30) What it was like hearing about Shelby Houlihan's positive drug test (38:20) How Molly felt emotionally after scratching from the Trials (41:50) Molly's thoughts on returning to the track, what the fall has in store for her, how book writing is going, and what's coming soon to Keeping Track (45:00) Molly's “State of the Running Industry” (55:00)   What we mention on this episode: Molly Huddle on Episode 51 of the Ali on the Run Show Molly Huddle on Episode 66 of the Ali on the Run Show Molly Huddle on Episode 259 of the Ali on the Run Show   Follow Molly:  Instagram @mollyhuddle Twitter @mollyhuddle Website   Follow Ali: Instagram @aliontherun1 Join the Facebook group Twitter @aliontherun1 Support on Patreon Blog Strava   Listen & Subscribe: Apple Podcasts Spotify SoundCloud Overcast Stitcher Google Play   SUPPORT the Ali on the Run Show! If you're enjoying the show, please subscribe and leave a rating and review on Apple Podcasts. Molly Stillman is a writer, blogger, wife, mom, and podcaster. She describes her life as a continuous act of trying to make as much positive impact as she can from her own little space.    Molly’s blogging success Molly started her online blogging journey way back when she was in college, a time when not so many people were familiar with online journaling and blogging.    Having majored in Creative Writing whilst in College, this went a long way in helping Molly stay consistent and better on her online writing hobby.  When she graduated in 2007, Molly decided to take her blogging a notch higher and made a switch from Journal blogging to live WordPress blogging.  Looking back at how she’s grown and transformed over the years, Molly owes a lot of it to her first 2-3 years outside of college. It was during this period that she started experiencing the real outside world from a whole new set of lenses; and as she kept writing about these new experiences, her following kept growing.  In 2012 Molly decided to rebrand and commercialize her blog.  Writing a consistent 5-6 posts a  week, Molly was not only grateful for the big following she had begun to amas but also made the big decision of fully focusing on Blogging as her job in 2014.    About her niche. And podcasting.  Molly writes about purchasing ethical training in the Fashion industry.  She’s focused on helping individuals use their purchasing power as clients to make a positive impact.  So it was a no-brainer in focusing her podcast theme on the same theme when she started her podcast in 2016.  Business with purpose is a podcast where Molly interviews companies, and individuals who are impacting the world in a positive way.  She talks about the various stakeholders that these companies and individuals are working with, and how they’ve all decided to put their personal interests aside in order to serve the greater good.  230+ episodes down the line and Molly is more than enjoying her experience with providing a platform to share these wonderful stories.    Through the podcasts, Molly is trying to change the current societal culture and mainstream belief system of putting yourself first, and looking out for yourself before anyone or anything else.  Molly is trying to show how serving the community and placing yourself after others is a way to not only lead a grateful and happy life but a way of attracting good and luck into your life too.    Growing her blog and podcast.  Molly has sacrificed her time and focus to ensure the slow and steady growth of her show. She’s said no to ‘Gaming the system’ schemes of trying to amass a big following which isn’t genuine or specific to her niche. This has indeed paid off, as Molly recently did a survey, through which she found out that she has readers who have been following her content for more than 6 years!  They’ve become a sort of online family, that has been with her throughout every major step of her adult life; from when she got engaged, married, pregnant, lost her pregnancy and prospering in her career.  She’s also had the honour of hosting a diverse range of professionals on her podcasts, all of whom are in unique careers, but in a way, still, find a way to make a positive impact.  Because at the end of the day, it really doesn't matter the industry or job that you do, what really matters is how you decided to frame and look at it. You can choose to see it as any other job, or you can see it as an opportunity to serve people and make a positive impact.    Molly’s superpower.  Integrity. Molly highly values integrity in not just herself, but also in her close friends and family. She’s been committed to sharing nothing but honest and transparent stories through her blog.    Molly is also a good discerner. She has the superpower of making the right decisions when faced with the pressure to pick a path in business, or in life generally.    Timestamps 00:46 When Molly started her blog in college.  02:21 How Molly rebranded her blog after college 03:39 Starting her Podcast in the summer of 2016 06:13 Changing the current culture to a serving culture 07:16 Growing her podcast.  10:32 The kind of businesses Molly interviews.  14:19 Giving genuine help 16:02 Molly’s advice to aspiring writers 19:46 Practicing daily gratitude journaling.  22:03 Molly’s superpower   Quotes There’s only so much you can do with pictures and written words. Actually hearing the story has much more impact.    In a culture that promotes the practice of putting your self-interest before others, I’m trying to counter the message by showing the personal and general benefits of serving others.    It doesn’t matter what kind of job you’re doing, what really matters is how you choose to look at it, you can either see it as just any other job or a way to make a positive impact and serve people.    We all have so very many different and diverse gifts, and they're all an opportunity to make a positive change in the world.    Serve without the expectation of receiving in return. Do it cause it’s the right and good thing to do.    Connect with Molly S Website - https://www.stillbeingmolly.com Facebook - https://www.facebook.com/stillbeingmolly Twitter - https://twitter.com/stillbeingmolly Instagram - https://www.instagram.com/stillbeingmolly/ Podcast - https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/id1160036500

This week, on the PRmoment podcast in the latest of our life stories series, I’m pleased to welcome Molly Aldridge, Global CEO of M&C Saatchi Public Relations.Molly has worked for both large and small agencies, independent and networked. She joined M&C Saatchi Public Relations in 2012. The company has a fee income of circa £10m and employs circa 100 people. Here is what Molly reveals: [00:03:32] The importance of PR being a good place for parents to come back to work after having children. [00:04:36] Why PR as a sector needs to make sure that it looks after working mums and dads otherwise you lose a whole set of talent certainly within the industry at a time when PR firms are struggling to find sufficient talent. [00:05:27] Why Molly's time at Cohn & Wolfe was such an important job in her career. [00:05:45] What makes a good public relations practitioner today. [00:06:50] Why PR needs great people brokers. [00:08:34] How sometimes a hotbed of exciting young agency talent can splinter to launch a number of different agencies. [00:10:00] Why an agency has to keep its momentum up. [00:10:03] Why the type of clients are a really important part of an agency’s momentum. [00:10:03] How an agency can lose its momentum. [00:12:29] The difference of working for a big agency compared with an independent agency. [00:14:57] Why you need to be a lot more autonomous, a lot more proactive and a lot more entrepreneurial in a smaller firm. [00:15:23] Why Molly's time at Henry's House was critical to the success of Slam. [00:15:46] Why success is a mixture of hard work and luck. [00:18:10] How the opportunity to create and lead Slam came about. [00:18:45] Why the launch of Slam would not have worked without Scott Wilson's sponsorship. [00:19:58] Why the launch of Slam worked when so many other consumer offers of large PR firms have failed. [00:20:20] Why rapid agency growth is much easier if you grow as your clients grow. [00:23:30] How Slam managed to grow at 30% year on year with a profit margin of 30% in the consumer PR market. [00:24:59] Why was Colin Byrne such a good mentor to Molly? [00:26:43] Why in a “US holding company world” you need someone at a senior level to have your back. [00:28:19] Why did Molly leave Slam - which she had grown to a multi-geography global PR firm - to join M&C Saatchi PR which at the time had a fee income of less that £1m? [00:31:08] Why the right opportunities should make you excited and terrified in equal measure. [00:31:37] Why Molly felt she'd taken Slam as far she could. [00:31:42] Why, because of its US-based ownership, Molly felt (at the end) the relationship was getting a bit parent-child like. [00:33:10] How Molly and Chris Hides have taken M&C Saatchi Public Relations from a fee income of circa £1 million to over £10 million. [00:33:54] Why growing an agency business quickly is really about relationships, people and hard work. [00:35:53] The mystery of why there is not more cross pollination of clients in multi-discipline marketing firms. [00:37:56] the In the absence of global British brands how has Molly grown M&C Saatchi Public Relations globally. [00:40:26] Why the partnership between Molly and Chris Hides works so well. We are all meant to change the world… some people just get to working on it sooner than others. Today's guest, Molly Hayward has felt called to speak up for and take a stand against social injustices since she was just a little girl- and since then she has never stopped. Molly is the visionary founder of Cora, a lifestyle brand giving women a modern method for managing their periods. Cora gives body-conscious organic tampons and sustainable menstrual products to girls in underdeveloped countries for every package shipped, using her business and her voice as an opportunity to speak for women who don't have the chance to speak for themselves. Molly Hayward is changing (and in many instances creating) the dialogue about women and their periods- one that has been hushed beneath shame and cultural norms- on a global scale. I am honored to have her on the show today, so get ready- this conversation is going to change the way you see your body, your global sisters, and yourself. IN THIS EPISODE: Today's guest, Molly Hayward [ 0:48 ] iTunes Review of the week: [ 3:10 ] How I found Cora and began using their amazing products [ 4:15 ] Where Molly's desire to help others came from [ 5:11 ] How Molly turned a spark of inspiration into a thriving business [ 13:03 ] The startling truth about what's happening to less fortunate women in our world [ 18:05 ] Honoring the seasons of our bodies and our lives [ 26:45 ] Why it's so important to give back in our businesses, and to work with others who want to do the same [ 29:15 ] The story behind Blood + Milk [ 32:58 ] How to create a dialogue around what we're experiencing during our periods [ 46:40 ] Why switching to organic products and respecting your body's cues can help stop severe cramps [ 50:00 ] The most surprising thing Molly has learned on this journey [ 55:33 ] All you need to know about Cora [ 59:30 ] SOUL SHIFTING QUOTES: “It felt so deeply ingrained inside of me that I had to do this; that I had to feel the fear and do it anyway.” “The reason why it has taken this long for there to be a consciousness among women about this experience is because there has been this overriding stigma about it that has been ingrained in girls from an extremely young age.” “There is that moment in the deepest part of winter when the seeds for the next spring are germinating underground. What our society does does not honor- is that moment.” “You don't devote your life to something for a paycheck; you do it because you know that it has meaning and it has greater purpose.” “Having severe pain, having severe discomfort, having a negative perspective on this experience is not natural. This is learned- this is culturally ingrained.” “Honoring my intuition and maintaining a positive perspective on everything is what moves this train forward.” LINKS MENTIONED: Start your subscription today by going to Cora.life! When you think of fun and happiness, generally the three things that come to mind are family, maybe traveling, and of course, accounting. No? Just us? Well, on today’s episode of Just the Tips, Dean and I welcome somebody who went from being an accountant to being sort of an entrepreneur whisperer, helping startup founders achieve their goals and, yes, happiness. She is the creator of Founder's Haven, which believes that “the driving force behind a startup's ability to succeed is in the founder's capacity to evolve, personally and professionally, while actively leading their company through its early stages of growth.” What that means is ensuring there is joy alongside all of the hard work. If you’ve been feeling like the grind is just the grind these days, this episode is for you. Compassion for the fraudsters Molly told us about how she started out getting her degree in accounting, and actually took a very interesting left turn, conducting audits for casinos and other huge organizations around the world. And while she said the work was fascinating, it wasn’t really what she wanted to do. She found herself fascinated with the people behind the audits, even finding compassion for the people who were committing fraud. And as she heard more and more stories about people starting businesses, and struggling at the outset, she found that was her calling: Helping entrepreneurs. But before we got into that, and because this is Just the Tips, of course we had to hear some good casino audit stories. Get back to the “why” After seeing so much fraud and corruption in her job as a forensic accountant, Molly decided she needed to do something that allowed her to use her empathy and compassion. As she says, often entrepreneurs lose sight of their own well being while pursuing the dream of their business. And often, when doing that, they lose sight of all of the reasons besides money that they love what they’re doing. So what Molly does is go in and reconnect business owners with the “why” of what they’re doing, set new expectations and new goals to align with why they’re doing it, and take off in a new direction. If you’ve ever felt that you’re caught up in the slog, you’re going to want to hear this week’s episode of Just the Tips. Molly’s framework for clearing your head A lot of what Molly talks about in today’s episode of Just the Tips jibes with what Dean and I have been saying this year: It’s important to keep things focused and simple. She says she often talks with entrepreneurs who are scattered, losing their way, and one of the first things she suggests is: Turn off social media, turn off your phone, and just grab a pen and a piece of paper and write down everything going on in your head. Basically, do a brain dump of everything you’ve been thinking about or worrying about in your life and in your business. Do some meditation, and then identify what it is you need to focus on. Reset your expectations One of the things that Molly mentions that really resonated with me and that I think will hit home for a lot of our listeners, too: If you’ve been in your business a year or two years or even longer, you’re different now. You’re a different person maybe doing the same things. You need to stop and check in every once in a while and see if what you’re doing is working, if it’s working for you, and if it’s still leading you where you want to go. Molly calls that “resetting your expectations,” because as things change, so should your expectations. Molly was a really interesting guest with a unique, warm perspective that you don’t often hear when talking business, and I think this episode of Just the Tips will really strike a chord with you. Molly Tissenbaum is a former Harvard Hockey Goalie and currently serves as a Research Analyst at the Sports Innovation Lab in Boston, MA.  I came across Molly's story of overcoming post-concussion syndrome on the Concussion Legacy Foundation's "My Legacy" page.  Molly's first concussion happened when she was just 13 years old after taking a puck to the facemask while training with some older boys.  Molly went to school at Premier Elite Athletics Collegiate (PEAC) which is a school for elite athletes.  There were very few female hockey players at this school so she frequently got to play with the boys.  Which proved to be a double-edged sword in this situation.  After asking if the puck went in the net, she immediately knew something was wrong and took herself out. Molly stayed home from school for about a week, and when her symptoms cleared, she went back to school, and within 2 weeks she was back on the ice without symptoms (the way it should work!).  At the time of the first concussion Molly was wearing a junior level mask instead of the superior senior-level mask. During our conversation we talked about the difference between junior and senior-level masks. Molly also believes that her mask wasn’t fitted properly, which is especially important for females with pony tails.  Molly recommends getting your mask fitted by someone reputable and don’t worry about what your hair looks like.  She found that the best fit comes when you leave an inch between where you tie your hair and the back plate of the mask.  Here is a link to a blog post on proper goalie mask fit. The second time Molly suffered a concussion was two years later in a playoff game when she was 15. In the second period of a 0-0 tie, she got hit in the head with a stick across the left side of her head. She was in a butterfly (on her knees to cover the bottom of the net), when a puck was flipped in the air towards her. The girl on the opposing team took a swing to try and bat it out of the air and missed, but made clear contact with the side of her head. Having suffered a concussion at 13, she knew immediately that something was off. She remembers looking up to see who hit her and struggled to determine if the number was 13 or 31. The numbers looked like they were dancing. But it was only the second period, and her team had to win this game in order to advance to the provincial championship tournament.  So she finished that game and her team ended up winning. Molly remained silent because she only had 2 weeks until the tournament. She was a leader and the starting goalie. She felt that her team needed her, so she tried to tough it out for the sake of the team.  "At no point did it occur to my 15-year-old self that I might be hurting myself, or even the team, by playing through a concussion." Molly struggled with post-concussion symptoms for nearly six months.  Her academics were severely impacted throughout this time, and teachers began to notice that something was off because the quality of her work declined.  She eventually recovered enough to be named valedictorian of her graduating class and get into the most prestigious university in the United States.  She credits her teachers support and patience throughout the difficult times she encountered following her second concussion. Concussion #3 was actually not sports-related. Her family got into a car accident on move-in weekend of Molly's sophomore year at Harvard.  Mollys first thought after impact was "thats the end of my career." This accident triggered post-concussion symptoms that forced Molly to take a medical leave of absence for a year.  Molly and I dive in to her struggles with symptoms and isolation during this time. Below are some more talking points during our conversation: How Molly fell in love with the goalie position after giving up 18 points in her first game. Common mechanisms for goalie concussions The Ice Guardians Documentary Rules in place to protect goalies The importance of academic support during PCS recovery Healing with time and rest The role of a muscle activation therapist Dealign with FOMO during PCS recovery Focusing on what you can do rather than what you can't The lack of a blueprint for concussion recovery Finding a new normal Why you need to be honest with yourself and prioritize your mental health to stay healthy Molly's transition to life after hockey, and why thinking about your future is not selfish Molly's work with The Butterfly Cares organization Where can you find Molly?
