Molly was also a spokesperson for the event, with a focus on her as a new mom, as well as a 3-time back to back to back champion at this race, 2015-2017. Molly has been very deliberate about sharing her pregnancy and post-partum journey as a professional runner as a way of moving the sport forward and advocating for more support of professional running moms and moms to be. This episode covers not only Molly's racing life leading up to and in the race, but also her larger role in the event, sharing her experience navigating professional running and motherhood. As she's said, when you're a professional runner, "your body is your business," so planning to have a baby is something you give a lot of thought to. And it's a process without a lot of guidance or enough support, yet. This episode is brought to you by InsideTracker, one of the most reputable blood testing companies in the world. They were founded in 2009 by aging, genetics, and biometrics scientists to help you analyze your body's data and get a firm idea of how well you're responding to training. Understanding your body's biomarkers, from stress hormones to testosterone to Vitamin D, can help you figure out if you're over-training, under-training, optimally training, or if you have a health issue that might be affecting your running. But the best part is that they give you personalized optimal ranges for each of these biomarkers and a host of ways to improve these markers through diet, lifestyle, or exercise changes. I've personally gotten three Ultimate tests from them and the process is simple, easy, and very eye-opening if you haven't done a deep dive on your biomarkers yet.  Of all the investments you can make in your running, this one is like getting a detailed checkup or regularly scheduled maintenance for your internal physiology.  If you're ready to take control of your health and optimize your training, get 25% off any of their blood tests with code STRENGTHRUNNING at InsideTracker. Thank you Therabody! If you want sound recovery, a big part of that is circulation. One of the reasons why massage feels so good after a hard effort is because of circulation: it brings fresh, oxygenated blood to your legs. The RecoveryAir by Therabody does that without needing someone to give you a massage. Plus, you can do it on the couch while you watch Netflix. What I love about the RecoveryAir Jetboots is that the pressure travels from your feet up to your heart and this graduated approach is more effective. The compression goes beyond your normal blood pressure while also monitoring it to prevent over-constriction. My personal preference is to use the boots the day after a hard day so I'm not giving my legs more than they can handle. Sit back, relax and recover. Sara Slattery  learned the importance of hard work from her father, watching him wake up at 4am while running his sign business.  She began her athletic career as a swimmer, training twice daily for several hours before and after school.  She joined her high school track team, merely as a way to stay in shape for swimming. As a freshman, she was state runner up in both the 800 and 3200 meters. This rising star realized she needed to focus her energy on running, training alongside her high school coach, Sabina Robinson—then 42 years old—a masters champion and Olympic trials marathon qualifier. Sara's work ethic and talent yielded twelve state high school championships and one national junior championship. Sara tells us of the challenges she faced after she sustained a serious injury during her senior year at the University of Colorado.  Once again, her work ethic - specifically her swimming background and ability to cross-train paid dividends; with very little running base she capped her outstanding, 11-time All-American collegiate running career with a victory in the 2005 NCAA 10k. Today Sara is the men's and women's head distance coach at Grand Canyon University in her hometown of Phoenix, Arizona.  She wanted to create a similar environment of excellence she experienced under Coach Wetmore at CU.  She recently collaborated with fellow elite runner and Olympian Molly Huddle on their new book How She Did It - just released this month, March 2022. Sara's book is an essential guide for female athletes navigating the world of competitive running. During her post-collegiate professional running career, Sara posted personal bests of 4:32 in the mile, 15:08 in the 5,000meters, and 31:57 in the 10k. This inspirational athlete was the 2007 Pan American Games 10k Champion,  2008 USA 8k Champion, and an alternate for the 2008 Olympic team. It was a pleasure to spend a moment in Sara's busy life, she is the mother of Steve, Cali, and married to former world-class Steeplechaser Steve Slattery. We are honored to welcome Sara to this episode of Intrinsic Drive™. Intrinsic Drive™ is produced by Ellen Strickler and Phil Wharton. “It felt like there was an earthquake in the running world, and we're seeing these fault lines change everything. And some things are good, and some things are weird.”   As the current American record holder in the 10,000 meters, Molly Huddle was one to watch heading into this year's Olympic Track & Field Trials. But just a few days before the Trials kicked off in Eugene, OR, Molly (who is also the American record holder in the 10 mile, the 20K, and the half-marathon) announced that she wouldn't be racing the 10K after all. She pulled out of the race, citing an injury that she's been dealing with since last year's Olympic Marathon Trials. On this episode, Molly — who represented Team USA at the last two Olympics, in 2012 in the 5000m and in 2016 in the 10,000m — talks about what it was like scratching from the biggest race of the year, and how she's handling the loss of an Olympic cycle and a chance to be on this year's team. She talks about watching her training partner and friend Emily Sisson win the 10K, shares her Trials highlights as a fan of the sport, and reflects on the current state of the running industry as a whole. Plus, Molly talks about what's next, including her running goals, her upcoming book (How She Did It, out next year), and what's on tap for the Keeping Track podcast, which she co-hosts with Roisin McGettigan-Dumas and Alysia Montaño.   SPONSOR: AfterShokz — Visit ontherun.aftershokz.com for 15% off wireless headphones.   What you'll get on this episode: What it was like watching training partner Emily Sisson win the 10000m at the Olympic Track & Field Trials (6:20) What it's been like dealing with an injury for the past year (18:00) Reflecting on racing the Mini 10K a few weeks ago (22:30) Making the decision to scratch from the Trials (35:30) What it was like hearing about Shelby Houlihan's positive drug test (38:20) How Molly felt emotionally after scratching from the Trials (41:50) Molly's thoughts on returning to the track, what the fall has in store for her, how book writing is going, and what's coming soon to Keeping Track (45:00) Molly's “State of the Running Industry” (55:00)   What we mention on this episode: Molly Huddle on Episode 51 of the Ali on the Run Show Molly Huddle on Episode 66 of the Ali on the Run Show Molly Huddle on Episode 259 of the Ali on the Run Show   Follow Molly:  Instagram @mollyhuddle Twitter @mollyhuddle Website   Follow Ali: Instagram @aliontherun1 Join the Facebook group Twitter @aliontherun1 Support on Patreon Blog Strava   Listen & Subscribe: Apple Podcasts Spotify SoundCloud Overcast Stitcher Google Play   SUPPORT the Ali on the Run Show! If you're enjoying the show, please subscribe and leave a rating and review on Apple Podcasts.
