Now, Diasporaa has been resurrected in the form of a podcast focused on sharing interesting immigrant stories from the South Asian diaspora and uncovering how much we have in common despite our differences. It is available on YouTube, all major podcast platforms such as Spotify, Apple Podcasts, Google Podcasts, etc. and is also broadcast as a radio show on Alternative Talk 1150 AM and 98.9 FM HD Channel 3 on Wednesdays from 2-3pm PST. This week Jun and Daniel dive into a deep exploration of social circles in Korea compared to America. Daniel shares his recent experience joining a church community group after five years, which sparks the main discussion about how social connections form differently across cultures. The hosts debate whether Korean social groups are more like "cliques" while American groups function as broader "communities," examining why Koreans tend to form smaller, deeper, and more exclusive social circles compared to the more open, expansive networks common in America. They explore the role of group harmony, hierarchy, and Korea's competitive society in shaping these differences, and discuss the concept of "third places" - neutral social environments outside of home and work - which Daniel feels are notably missing in modern Korean society. If you're interested in understanding why Korean social groups often require multiple commonalities while American groups might form around just one shared interest, how utilitarian values factor into relationship-building in Korean society, or how much things have changed from the previous generation, tune in to hear Daniel and Jun discuss all this and more! Daniel also shares his personal struggles adapting to the Korean social landscape despite living in the country for well over three years.Support the showAs a reminder, we record one episode a week in-person from Seoul, South Korea. In this enlightening episode of the Tactical Living Podcast, hosts Coach Ashlie Walton and Sergeant Clint Walton dive into an often overlooked aspect of marital health (Amazon Affiliate)— the influence of the couples you spend time with. Titled Choosing Your Circle: The Impact of Couple Friendships on First Responder Marriages, this discussion explores how the company you keep can reflect and affect the health of your own marital relationship. Drawing parallels to how we were taught as children to choose our friends wisely, this episode examines the importance of surrounding yourself with positive, supportive couple friends. Introduction to Couple Dynamics: Begin by addressing the common advice given to children about choosing the right friends and how this wisdom should extend into adult relationships, particularly for married couples. Reflecting on Personal Experiences: Consider how the dynamics of the couples you associate with can influence your own relationship. Reflect on personal experiences or observations where couple friendships might have positively or negatively impacted a marriage. Identifying Healthy vs. Unhealthy Couple Friendships: Discuss characteristics of healthy and supportive couple friendships, such as mutual respect, positive communication, and shared values. Contrast these with signs of unhealthy interactions within couple groups, such as constant conflict, negative influences, or behaviors that do not align with personal and marital values. The Influence of Social Circles on Marriage: Explore how the attitudes and behaviors of couple friends can affect aspects of your own marriage, from conflict resolution and communication to social activities and lifestyle choices. Learning from Negative Experiences: Share insights from an experience where spending time with a certain couple led to negative outcomes, such as the story of a couple who faced serious issues like domestic assault charges. Making Conscious Choices: Provide strategies for evaluating and choosing couple friends who support and enhance your marital happiness and personal growth. Discuss the importance of having open discussions with your spouse about the values and dynamics you both wish to embrace or avoid in your friendships. Benefits of Positive Couple Friendships: Highlight the benefits of cultivating strong, healthy friendships with other couples, including increased support networks, shared experiences, and enhanced marital satisfaction. Recap the importance of being selective with couple friendships and how these relationships can mirror and influence the health of your own marriage. Emphasize that just as with individual friends, the couples you choose to spend time with can significantly impact your life and relationship. As a listener, think about the couples you currently spend time with and assess whether these relationships are healthy and supportive for you and your spouse. Consider engaging in conversations with your partner about how your couple friendships affect your marriage and ways to potentially improve your social circle. Join us in this episode to gain a deeper understanding of how the couples you associate with can influence your marriage and learn how to make conscious choices that foster a healthier and happier relationship. Whether you're looking to strengthen your marital bonds or simply reassess your social interactions, this discussion provides valuable insights and practical advice. My guest today is Robin Dunbar. Robin is a biological anthropologist, evolutionary psychologist, and specialist in primate behavior. He is the man behind Dunbar's number, a theory about the number of stable relationships we can maintain at once. Robin unravels the thread of research that led him to Dunbar's number and describes how this plays into every single person's layers of human connection. It was fascinating to hear how his findings on social circles have implications for optimally structuring businesses and organizations, as well as the idea of homophily, all of which Robin thoughtfully explains. It was a treat to get to explore these topics with Robin Dunbar himself so please enjoy this great conversation.   Listen to Founders Podcast For the full show notes, transcript, and links to mentioned content, check out the episode page here. ----- This episode is brought to you by Tegus, the only investment research platform built for fundamental investors. Around 40 percent of people who marry eventually get a divorce. Almost half of children are born to unmarried women. The number of close friends Americans report having has been on a steep decline since the 1990s, especially among men. Millions of us are growing old alone. We are living out a radical experiment in how we live, love, parent and age — and for many, it's failing. That's partial context, I think, for the recent burst of interest and media coverage of polyamory. People want more love in their lives, and opening their relationships is one way to find it. A poll from last year found that one-third of Americans believe their ideal relationship would involve something other than strict monogamy. But polyamory, for all its possibilities, isn't right for many, and it doesn't have that much to say about parenting or aging or friendship. As radical as it may sound, it's not nearly radical enough. It's not just romance that could be imagined more expansively. It's everything.“If this is such a significant relationship in my life, why is there no term for it?” wonders NPR's Rhaina Cohen about a relationship that transcends the language we have available for friendship. Her forthcoming book, “The Other Significant Others: Reimagining Life With Friendship at the Center,” is a window into a world of relational possibilities most of us never even imagined existed. It's a call to open up what we can conceive of as possible. Some of these models might appeal to you. Others might not. But they all pose a question worth asking: What kinds of relationships would you want in your life, if you felt you could ask for them?Mentioned:“Men's Social Circles are Shrinking” by Daniel A.
