PLUS: How'd an innocuous Social Circle warehouse somehow improve in value by $100 million in just two years for DHS to have paid that much more for it? Prior to his visit to Rome, GA, today, Donald Trump thought it fitting to take swipes at Atlanta over his perception of the city's crime woes (his Mar A Lago hometown with a higher crime rate per capita, mind you ...) but the day actually isn't about him; not here. Instead, Ron discussed someone who didn't shirk military duty; someone who actively sought it out despite not even being an American citizen. The deportation of Godfrey Wade, a U.S. Army veteran and longtime Georgia resident sent to Jamaica after missing a court date he says he was never notified about, was the focus of much of today's show, with his attorney Tony Kozycki at Kozycki Law joining Ron. Hear why Wade missed his court date (not his fault) but also hear how this military veteran / permanent resident was blithely vilified by one DHS official - Tricia McLaughlin - who's now resigning. She similarly smeared Renee Good and Alex Pretti, too, though, so a skunk never loses her stripes. Good riddance.Oh, and it's curious - is it not - in this "DOGE-y" era, that DHS spent $128.5 million on a warehouse previously purchased for $29 million just two-ish years ago. Hard to imagine there were upgrades and/or increases in value that come to a tidy $100 million profit for the LLC that snapped it up back in December of 2021. Greg Bluestein and Patricia Murphy dig into the federal government's push to turn warehouses in Social Circle and Oakwood into large-scale ICE detention facilities. They're joined by AJC immigration reporter Lautaro Grinspan to break down what we know about the 183-acre purchase in Social Circle, the second site in Hall County, and the infrastructure and tax questions local officials are raising. Hey it's Ron; earlier in the week I'd highlighted some sound legislative offerings from Republican women in the Georgia general assembly that I hoped Democrats would join in on and push across the finish line. There's another, giving pharmacists the ability to prescribe HIV prevention medication, again, penned by a Republican. This is encouraging to see. What's discouraging, of course, is that the same Georgia GOP saw fit earlier in the week to "poison-pill" a bill both parties were enthusiastic about - HB 54 - by adding anti-trans language into it. To discuss some of that refreshing (and rare) bipartisanship - but also the more troubling legislation making its way through this session, is Dr. Michelle Au, representative for Georgia's 50th House District, and host of the new podcast "Georgia Diagnosis."Rev. Senator Raphael Warnock added an amendment to DHS funding in an attempt end DHS/ICE purchasing warehouses in Oakwood and Social Circle, GA, two small communities sure to be overwhelmed by facilities their infrastructure cannot handle; the kind of treatment op/ed writer Patricia Murphy called 'unconscionable.' Then I got my mental wellness break with comedian / political satirist Sterling Thrill. Between 'Bad Bunny' triggering Megyn Kelly & Pam Bondi going full "Karen" with her flash cards, we had plenty to chuckle about - and did. Lastly, an op/ed I saw from Mariah Parker & Dominique Grant at Fair Play ATL reminded us all that Atlanta's Olympic legacy isn't just tarnished by a bombing, but a lack of positive impact - and its negative impacts on housing affordability. It's their push to insist that Atlanta hosting eight FIFA World Cup matches in 2026 invests its windfall in positive change and a lack of ICE in the city's streets.

Sobriety doesn't just change your habits. It changes your social surface area and that's where most men get uncomfortable. In this episode of That Sober Guy Podcast (the number one sober podcast since 2014), we break down a hard truth most people won't say out loud: when you stop drinking, your social circle often gets smaller, but your leverage gets bigger. This isn't about isolation. It's about signal-to-noise ratio. We explore why sobriety naturally compresses relationships, how alcohol props up low-value social volume, and why fewer but clearer connections often lead to better decisions, stronger positioning, and higher performance. Inside the episode: Why sobriety exposes which relationships were built on access vs alignment How fewer social obligations create more focus, time, and strategic clarity The difference between social popularity and social leverage Why some people get uncomfortable when you opt out, and what that reveals How disciplined men often get mislabeled before they get respected We also unpack the trade-off most high-performing men face: short-term social friction in exchange for long-term authority, credibility, and optionality. If you've noticed your calendar clearing, your phone getting quieter, or your tolerance for surface-level conversations dropping since you stopped drinking, this episode will help you understand why that's not a loss. It's a recalibration. Bottom line:Less noise. More signal.Fewer circles. Greater leverage. Like, who's not surprised this wasn't a "day one" thing for these white nationalists? Mango Madman really wants Greenland, too, and now Denmark's military is ramping up "exercises" on the territory. Great. We're going to war with Danish people. The episode expands to Governor Brian Kemp's "big reveal," which was - ho hum - more interstate lanes and not even a public-private rail concept like Air Canada and the Ontario government as working on. Sad.On to Savannah, where a local gun storage ordinance is being overridden by state lawmakers, and goes into a deep dive of newly released grand jury testimony revealing what top Georgia Republicans privately said about Trump's 2020 election claims.Oh, and back to ICE ... it's bad enough ICE is using Nazi and white nationalist symbolism to lure in that mindset, but get this: a liberal blogger with an easy-to-Google disdain for ICE applied to work for ICE without a background check and was offered a job by ICE. That's how thorough the vetting is for these masked goons getting $50,000 sign-on (taxpayer-funded) sign-on bonuses who wander the streets to rough up protestors and hunt down immigrants. GDP Script/ Top Stories for September 18th Publish Date: September 18th PRE-ROLL: From the BG AD Group Studio Welcome to the Gwinnett Daily Post Podcast. Today is Thursday, September 18th and Happy birthday to Tyne Sandberg I’m Peyton Spurlock and here are your top stories presented by KIA Mall of Georgia. Annual Lake Lanier Shore Sweep takes place this weekend Landowners near Rivian defeat state demand for legal costs Friday Night Food Fight turns 10 and nears milestone for helping feed Gwinnett families Plus, Leah McGrath from Ingles Markets on sweet tooth All of this and more is coming up on the Gwinnett Daily Post podcast, and if you are looking for community news, we encourage you to listen daily and subscribe! Break 1: Ingles Markets 1 STORY 1: Annual Lake Lanier Shore Sweep takes place this weekend The Lake Lanier Association is gearing up for its 37th annual Shore Sweep, the massive cleanup effort that’s been keeping the lake and its shores clean for decades. Mark your calendars: it’s happening Saturday, Sept. 20, with advance cleanup sites open now through Sunday, Sept. 21. Over the years, volunteers have pulled a staggering 2.33 million pounds of trash from the lake. Last year alone? 85 tons, thanks to 1,200 dedicated helpers. This year, they’re aiming even higher—100 tons. Volunteers can bring trash to 15 drop-off sites or join mobile crews on the water. Registration is required—visit lakelanier.org/shore-sweep for details. STORY 2: Landowners near Rivian defeat state demand for legal costs A group of landowners who tried to block the massive Rivian auto plant near Social Circle just dodged a $338,000 legal bill. The state wanted them to pay for its defense, calling their lawsuit frivolous, but a Morgan County judge wasn’t buying it. Judge Stephen Bradley ruled the suit was a legitimate attempt to question whether Georgia officials could sidestep local zoning laws for a private company on public land. The state had bought the 2,000-acre property, leased it to a development authority, which then leased it to Rivian. Bradley’s 11-page order didn’t hold back, even suggesting the state’s actions seemed designed to silence local opposition. For the landowners, it’s a huge relief. Meanwhile, Rivian is moving forward, with groundbreaking on the plant expected soon. The state insists the project will bring “generational economic opportunity,” but the legal battles aren’t over yet. STORY 3: Friday Night Food Fight turns 10 and nears milestone for helping feed Gwinnett families What started as a simple idea at Susan Lang’s kitchen table has turned into something extraordinary: 10 years of Friday Night Food Fight, a student-driven effort that’s collected nearly half a million pounds of food for Gwinnett County families in need. It all began when Lang’s son, then a senior at Mill Creek High, suggested turning a football rivalry with Dacula into a food drive competition. That first year? They hauled in 45,000 pounds of food. Now, schools across the county join in, with donations feeding hundreds of families weekly. We have opportunities for sponsors to get great engagement on these shows. Call 770.874.3200 for more info. We’ll be right back Break 2: GWINNETT FAIR STORY 4: Northside Duluth doctor first in Georgia to perform new knee procedure Last month, Northside Hospital Duluth made waves in Georgia’s medical community. Dr. Timilehin Wusu, an orthopedic surgeon at Northside, became the first in the state to perform a groundbreaking procedure using the MISHA (Medial Implantable Shock Absorber) system. The device, designed for patients with medial compartment knee osteoarthritis, helps reduce pain and improve mobility—without the need for a total knee replacement. The first patient? A 54-year-old woman who’s already on the road to reclaiming her active life. STORY 5: Georgia high court decision ends Fulton prosecutor’s participation in case against Trump The Georgia Supreme Court just slammed the brakes on Fulton County DA Fani Willis’ election interference case against Donald Trump and his allies. In a tight 4-3 vote, the court refused to hear her appeal after the Georgia Court of Appeals disqualified her from prosecuting the case. Why? Her romantic relationship with Nathan Wade, a special prosecutor she’d assigned to the case, raised too many eyebrows. The ruling leaves the state Prosecuting Attorneys’ Council to potentially take over, as it did with Lt. Gov. Burt Jones’ case. We’ll be right back. Break 3: 07.14.22 KIA MOG And now here is Leah McGrath from Ingles Markets on sweet tooth Break 4: We’ll have closing comments after this Break 5: Ingles Markets 1 Signoff – Thanks again for hanging out with us on today’s Gwinnett Daily Post Podcast. At the turn of the common era, the Jewish communities of Roman Palestine saw the organization of a small group of literate Jewish men who devoted their lives to the interpretation and teaching of their sacred ancestral texts. In How Rabbis Became Experts: Social Circles and Donor Networks in Jewish Late Antiquity (Princeton University Press, 2025), Krista Dalton shows that these early rabbis were not an insular specialist group but embedded in a landscape of Jewish piety. Drawing on the writings of rabbis in Roman Palestine from the second through fifth centuries CE, Dalton illuminates the significance of social relationships in the production of rabbinic expertise. She traces the social interactions—everyday instances of mutual exchange, from dinner parties to tithes and patronages—that fostered the perception of rabbis as experts. Dalton shows how the knowledge derived from the rabbis' technical skills was validated and recognized by others. Rabbis socialized and noshed with neighbors and offered advice and legal favors to friends. In exchange for their expert judgments, they received invitations, donations, appointments, and recognition. She argues that their status as Torah experts did not arise by virtue of being scholars but from their ability to persuade others that their mobilization of Jewish cultural resources was beneficial. Dalton describes the relational processes that made rabbinic expertise possible as well as the accompanying tensions; social interactions shaped the rabbis' domain of knowledge while also imposing expectations of reciprocity that had to be managed. Dalton's authoritative analysis demonstrates that a focus on friendship and exchange provides a fuller understanding of how rabbis claimed and defended their distinct expertise.
