In this week's episode, both of our storytellers share tales of persistence and beating the odds in order to pursue their scientific dreams. Part 1: Determined to become an academic, Rajyashree Sen must take on a broken system to secure a spot in a PhD program in Vienna. Part 2: Josh Barber dreams of studying fish, but when his father goes to jail and his mother is diagnosed with breast cancer, he's left to care for his nine younger siblings. Rajyashree Sen is a neuroscientist and postdoctoral researcher at Columbia University. She holds a PhD in neuroscience and molecular biology from the University of Vienna (Austria), and a masters degree in Biotechnology from the University of Hyderabad (India). As a graduate student with Dr. Barry Dickson, Dr. Sen dissected the neuronal pathways for evasive walking in fruit-flies. Her research focused on a set of neurons, dubbed the moonwalker neurons, that constitute the key pathway for backward walking in flies. Her work has been tweeted by MC Hammer. Dr. Sen is currently a postdoctoral fellow in the laboratory of Nobel Laureate Dr. Richard Axel, where she investigates the neuronal basis of social memories in mice. When she is not in the lab, she does improv comedy. While science has taken her to interesting places in interesting brains, improv has taken her to the moon, hell, back and beyond. Josh is the Assistant Director of Aquatic Life at Columbia University where he oversees the well-being of various aquatic species in biomedical research. He's cohost of the Podcast "Gettin' Fishy With it" a podcast about fish in the wild, the hobby and the laboratory. His hobbies include improv comedy, ruining conversation flow with terrible puns, fishing, and fishing in his favorite videogame, World of Warcraft. Learn more about your ad choices. Cities and Memory - remixing the sounds of the world

"The original field recording was from Hotel Shadab, Hyderabad India. The recording was so humanly rich, with lots of voices, and activities which gave me an aural sense of a city in a busy day. Although I have never been to Hyderabad, the recording presented information about a generic day but of a particular time.  "So the recording inspired me in a way, that I wanted to illustrate my city, which is Kolkata sonically, but the time, the incidents which I tried to capture with my illustration were not generic, but of a particular period. "For the past few months, the city has been ablaze regarding the protests for a horrific incident in RG Kar Hospital, and parallelly the biggest festival of the city, which is Durga Puja, was also coming in. There were two narratives of thought, floating around.  "The government was trying their best to push the term 'festival' in such a way that it directly opposed the term 'Protest', however, the people were hell-bent on the idea, that a protest against atrocities is a festival.  "I tried to capture this particular turbulent time of this city, and its gradual shifts during the Durga Puja festivities while parallelly drawing a line with all those familiar sounds with the protest and festivities.  "I have used the original recording from Hyderabad, in a way where it symbolizes the vocalization of the most mundane human beings, who become not so mundane when they gather in for a collective voice and the voices blend in. " Hotel Shadab, Hyderabad reimagined by Prabuddha Mukhopadhyay.

Young men are crying out for spiritual fathers. Being a father requires hard work and dedication. Correction is essential in spiritual mentorship. You cannot disciple from a distance; you must go. Spiritual fathers bring transformation to nations. The goal is to raise spiritual sons who become fathers. Discipleship is a hands-on process. The nations are filled with men hungry for guidance. Revival is coming, but we need more spiritual fathers. This conversation is with Nazia Akhtar, Assistant Professor at the Human Sciences Research Centre, International Institute of Information Technology, Hyderabad and the author of Bibi's Room: Hyderabadi Women and Twentieth-Century Urdu Prose, in which she has profiled three prolific Hyderabadi Urdu writers, namely Zeenath Sajida, Najma Nikhat and Jeelani Bano. We discuss some of the most influential and invigorating writings by these women, notably stories like Sajida's ‘If Allah Miyan Were A Woman', which offers a critical and compassionate outlook of womanhood in negotiation with one's Muslim beliefs, Nikhat's writings that starkly brought out the behaviours and attitudes of feudal class, and Bano's body of work spanning almost fifty years. We also discuss Dakhani as a language of the Deccan soil and ‘Begumati Zubaan' that opens a world of its own through communications between women interacting with one another. Through this conversation, Nazia offers a nuanced understanding of the lives of these women in post-Independence decades in Hyderabad, who as Nazia puts were “thrice marginalised”. Bibi's Room is an invaluable source of Indian Muslim women's writings challenging patriarchal structures and norms within and outside their circles, and expands the canon of feminist Urdu writings in the country. Do give this episode a listen, and pick up the book, wherever you can.About Nazia Akhtar (bio republished with permission by the author)Nazia Akhtar is an Assistant Professor at the Human Sciences Research Centre, International Institute of Information Technology (IIIT), Hyderabad (India), where she teaches courses in Indian and Russian literatures. In 2017, she was awarded a New India Foundation fellowship to write a book on Urdu prose by Hyderabadi women. Bibi's Room: Hyderabadi Women and Twentieth-Century Urdu Prose went into print in July 2022. She received a commendation from the jury of the Jawad Memorial Prize (2021) for her translation of Zeenath Sajida's Urdu short story “Chhotam Jaan.” Her second book, The Deccan Sun: Essays and Stories by Zeenath Sajida (1924-2009), will be published by Penguin Random House in 2025. In this episode, FAQ is: What if I don't like the food? Today's Destination is: Hyderabad, India Today's Misstep- Wrong color nail polish Travel Advice: Grateful before happy FAQ: What if I don't like the food?   Answer:  You mostly will, but if not, have a plan. If you find yourself not enjoying the food in a travel destination, there are several things you can do to make your dining experience more enjoyable: Explore hyper-local options: Try different restaurants and eateries in your immediate neighborhood that offer a variety of local dishes. Sometimes, a dish or cooking style may not suit your taste, but other options might. Ask Locals for Recommendations: Locals often know the best places to eat. Don't hesitate to ask for recommendations from hotel staff, tour guides, or friendly locals you meet during your travels. Tell them your limitations. Look for Familiar Cuisines: If you're having trouble adjusting to local flavors, look for restaurants that serve familiar cuisines. Many tourist destinations have various international restaurants catering to diverse tastes. Check Reviews: Use online review platforms like TripAdvisor, Yelp, or Google Reviews to find highly-rated restaurants. These platforms often provide insights into the food quality and overall dining experience. Communicate Your Preferences: If dining at a local establishment, consider politely communicating your preferences or dietary restrictions to the staff. They may be able to offer alternatives or modify dishes to suit your taste. Visit Markets or Grocery Stores: Explore local markets or grocery stores to find fresh produce, snacks, or even pre-packaged meals that you might enjoy. This allows you to have some control over your food choices. Opt for Self-Cooking Options: If you have access to a kitchen, consider preparing simple meals for yourself. You can buy ingredients from local markets and try cooking, providing a more personalized dining experience. Pack Snacks: Bring some of your favorite snacks from home to supplement your meals, especially if you're in a place where your preferred foods might be hard to find. I brought Peanut Butter to many places where I knew that Chilis was on every menu. That gave me protein and confidence. Be Open-Minded: Sometimes, embracing the local culinary culture and being open-minded about trying new foods can lead to unexpected discoveries and a more positive dining experience. Today's destination: Hyderabad, India I arrived from Kerala to Hyderabad and had a phone number of someone to call that I would be staying with. We had a few texts to each other. Basically, a friend of a friend allowed me to stay with them and I was grateful.. They had their worker pick me up in the family car at the airport. My new friend, Soujanya, came along for the ride, which was special. We visited her parents' apartment, and I rested. Then we explored places such as her dad's 7-acre farm, about an hour away, with ripe fruits like mangos and vegetables near a beautiful lake. it was nature in one of the finest moments. then we went to my host's home and met the other family members, husband, daughter, and then finally, brothers and sisters of the hosts, who all seemed to live in the same development. They also have a “family “ business, and they showed me the office space and several employees working on projects.  One of the highlights was seeing the Golconda Fort, with its architecture and panoramic city views. They had an impressive sound and light show in the evening. Seeing this in the evening, it was not crowded when things cooled down.  We went to dinner afterward. Then, we drove around the city, including across the bridge. I could see the icons of tech here on parade in neon. Every company I could think of and more, including Qualcomm, is clearly part of the Hyderabad skyline, based in San Diego. Here are some recommendations for things to do in Hyderabad: Charminar: This iconic monument is a must-visit. You can explore the surrounding markets for traditional bazaars and enjoy the local street food. Qutb (ku-teb)Shahi Tombs: Visit the Qutb Shahi Tombs to experience the serenity of the surrounding gardens and explore the intricate architecture of these historic structures. For my next visit, here's what I will see: Salar Jung Museum: If you're interested in art and history, the Salar Jung Museum houses one of the largest private collections of artifacts worldwide. Ramoji Film City: If you enjoy the world of cinema, spend a day at Ramoji Film City, one of the largest film studios in the world. It's a fascinating experience with film sets, gardens, and entertainment. Birla Mandir: This stunning white marble temple dedicated to Lord Venkateswara offers a peaceful atmosphere and a beautiful city view. Hussain Sagar Lake: Take a boat ride on Hussain Sagar Lake and visit the Buddha Statue on an island in the middle of the lake. Eat at Paradise Restaurant: Hyderabad is famous for its biryani, and Paradise Restaurant is renowned for serving delicious biryani. It's a must-visit for food enthusiasts. Remember to prioritize your safety, especially when exploring new places alone. Inform someone about your whereabouts, use reliable transportation, and be aware of your surroundings. Enjoy your solo trip to Hyderabad!   Today's Misstep- Wrong color nail polish. Make it clear or natural. Use natural or clear colors instead of bright or bold colors. They get cracked, and you don't want to spend time fixing them.   Today's Travel Advice- Be grateful before you seek happy as a traveler.   If you do this in order you will have both. Gratitude comes first, before happiness. So be grateful for what you have now.  In positive psychology research, gratitude is strongly and consistently associated with greater happiness. Gratitude helps people feel more positive emotions, relish good experiences, improve their health, deal with adversity, and build strong relationships.   “Man cannot discover new oceans unless he has the courage to lose sight of the shore.” – Andre Gide “Remember that happiness is a way of travel – not a destination.” – Roy M. Welcome to Episode 1484 in which Marc Millon interviews Valentina Abbona of Cantine dei Marchesi di Barolo in today's episode of Wine, Food & Travel The winery is awarded the Best Red Wine 2023 Trophy, Barolo DOCG Sarmassa 2018 at the 5StarWines & Wine Without Walls wine selection in 2023. More about today's guest About today's guest: Valentina Abbona, 6th generation at Cantine dei Marchesi di Barolo together with her brother Davide, lives a passionate and profound relationship with wine, which for her is emotion, feeling, history, terroir and - above all - home. After attending to the Liceo Scientifico in Alba, she moved to Milan where she attended the Bocconi University, where she graduated in Business and Economics. During these years, her personal and professional training grew constantly thanks to various school-exchange programs, which took her from Manchester to Hyderabad (India) and then to New York. Her highly "international" career continues in Shanghai, where she worked for about a year for a niche high-profile consultancy firm. Welcome to Episode 1003 Steve Raye interviews Valentina Abbona of Cantine dei Marchesi di Barolo in this installment of Get US Market Ready With Italian Wine People on the Italian Wine Podcast. About today's guest: Valentina Abbona, 6th generation at Cantine dei Marchesi di Barolo together with her brother Davide, lives a passionate and profound relationship with wine, which for her is emotion, feeling, history, terroir and - above all - home. Her experience begins in her family's cellars - a plunge to the heart every time she returns from long journeys - and it is here that the operativity of her daily work grows. Meanwhile she was attending university, she also accompanied her mother Anna on her numerous business trips all around the world, which allowed her grasp the most diverse perspectives of the wine business and to exploit them in the perfect crossroads of tradition and innovation represented today by Marchesi di Barolo. Having the chance to go back to Hyderabad, India for a wedding of our two friends, Preetham and Spandana, was an unforgettable experience. Not only did we have the opportunity to partake in the many ceremonies of the marriage including Sangeeth, Haldi, Groom’s Day, Bride’s Day, Mehndi, and the huge wedding event, we also visited Hitec City, Nalgonda, and Gandipet. The incredible visit included a trip out delivering invitations on a motorbike, dancing choreographed steps to Indian music, and making a trip for Toddy palm wine. The people were all incredibly kind from the families to our amazing hosts. We stayed with four different families, met kids on the streets playing cricket, and enjoyed late nights understanding the culture. This India trip will not be forgotten, and we hope you enjoy us telling our unique story of discovering more reasons why we love to travel so much in this episode of Passport Joy Travel Talk. Main Topics Covered: Hyderabad Nagole Hitec City Nalgonda Links Mentioned in the Episode: Check out all of the PARTNERS that have made our lives easy while traveling the world.  Nikki’s first published book - Passport Joy - can be found on the Kindle store on Amazon.  Listen to our previous journey to India on Podcast 48: India is Incredible (2 Months Traveling 7+ Cities).  Utilize the Pre-Paid Taxis ran by the government to give you peace of mind when you land at the airport in Hyderabad. Our outfits during the wedding festivities were outstanding.  HITEC city is an area in Hyderabad focused on technology, engineering, and other sectors of economic growth.  The Westin in HITEC was unbelievable with its great service and huge rooms.  Toddy palm wine is what we went searching for on Sunday and it was a great trip.  Our hosts, Jaya and Anthony, were amazingly kind. I compared tattoos with their mother one day.  Sangeeth is the dance portion of the wedding festivities. Nalgonda was smaller version of Hyderabad and a fun town. We celebrated the bride’s day and Haldi at her home.  Nikki got mehndi on her hands and forearms.  The wedding was a bit early in the morning but a gorgeous ceremony.  Sign up for our Newsletter to get the latest tips in Travel and hear about our weekly visits around the world

Episode 142: Have you ever thought of going to the International Permaculture Conference and Convergence (IPC)? Held every two years, switching between continents at different locations, the IPC is a gathering of Permaculture designers, teachers, and enthusiasts. This year, the IPC is held in India, which is celebrating 30 years of permaculture! To learn more I spoke with Margie Bushman & Wes Roe of the Santa Barbara Permaculture Network. In this interview, Margie and Wes discuss Permaculture, their involvement with the IPC, and the next one taking place in Hyderabad India, in November and December of 2017. Hosted by Aranya Agricultural Alternatives NGO, the IPC 2017 will be a unique and possibly transforming experience. The whole Aranya organization, including community members, farmers from nearby villages, a dynamic group of international volunteers, and especially the community's women and children are all joyfully preparing to welcome the world to the IPC conference & convergence. Margie & Wes are founding members of the Friends of the International Permaculture Convergences (FIPC) that works to insure there is a diversity of participants at each IPC by providing scholarships for delegates from around the world. Diversity is key here. Delegates come from a wide variety of regions and contribute toward a diversity of ideas and solutions arrived at each IPC. IPC's reach into every corner of the world, local to global, to bring forth and share these ideas. Past host sites have been in Australia, USA, New Zealand, Scandinavia, Nepal, Croatia, Brazil, Malawi, Jordan, Cuba, United Kingdom, and India in 2017, followed by Argentina in 2020. This year for the first time FIPC launched an ambitious worldwide crowdfund, so all in the global Permaculture community could easily contribute using the powerful energy of money to help shape a better world. We are a global society, and more than any other time in history, in order to be resilient, we need a diversity of ideas from all regions and cultures to survive. For more than forty years Permaculture has been leading the way with innovative, planet and climate friendly design strategies, that are just now being fully recognized by the rest of the world as the answer to some of our most pressing challenges.  Margie Bushman and Wes Roe are the co-founders of the Santa Barbara Permaculture Network, an educational non-profit founded in 2000 that has sponsored hundreds of workshops and events about Permaculture and sustainability. Margie was the Program Coordinator for the Santa Barbara City College (SBCC) Center for Sustainability from 2009-2013, where she developed a Cities as the Solution series and an Eco-Entrepreneurship pilot program. Together Margie and Wes teach the Invisible Structures component of the Permaculture Design Course, a credited class, that they are proud to have helped initiate at SBCC. Wes served as a board member of the Permaculture Credit Union for nine years, later as Board President. Margie and Wes have been volunteer coordinators for the IPC Support Group since its inception in 2005. For more information on IPC2017, visit the IPC India website at : http://ipcindia2017.org/ Visit the Santa Barbara Permaculture Network/IPC page for the FIPC and crowdfund information: http://www.sbpermaculture.org/ipc.html
