2022 was my third year competing in the Trainual IRONMAN 70.3 Indian Wells – La Quinta, near Palm Springs, California. In the most recent race, I competed on a relay team as one of three teammates instead of doing the entire thing myself. This decision came from an epiphany I had, and that epiphany is the perfect metaphor for building your business. And more importantly, building the right team around yourself as the business owner. The best way to give somebody hope is by showing up every single day. In this episode, I chat with James "The Iron Cowboy" Lawrence, the man who completed 100 Ironman Races in 100 days. James recalls the mental toughness he had to develop during his journey. He knew that if he quit, he'd never know what it felt like to succeed. He also knew that by quitting, he wouldn't be able to give people hope that anyone can do hard things if they believe in themselves. I challenge you today; whatever you're facing, don't quit. You must believe you will succeed even if nobody's watching you or rooting for you. Create the life you've always wanted!
If you've been feeling uninspired, or unsure if you're up to the task at hand, or finding it hard to get out there and enjoy what life has to offer, then this episode might be exactly what you need! Today on The Karen Kenney Show, we're talking to my longtime friend Sean Snow (S2), a former triathlon coach, who's participated in 5 Boston Marathons, and has competed world-wide in over 70 Half-Ironman Races, 35 Ironman Races, and 15 World Championships, including the Hawaii Ironman 5 times! We're also joined by his daughter Stephanie - a former three-sport athlete, who's now found her passion in endurance racing and is following in his father's footsteps! We dive into what it takes to lead this kind of athletic lifestyle, including the level of commitment, the early wake up times and the daily physical, mental, emotional training and spiritual practices they do that helps them to give their best, create opportunities and bring some light to the world every day. My hope with today's episode is that you'll join us in the laughter and reminiscing, but most of all be inspired to expand your comfort zone, try something new and ask yourself how you can bring your own bright light and “fire” to the world around you. This week I am excited to bring you a fantastic interview. It's been awhile since I've done one and I couldn't be more excited to bring them back. This week I'm excited to share with you a fantastic conversation I had with Sunny Lawrence, someone I’ve known and adored for a long time, and the wife of James Lawrence, the Iron Cowboy. If you are familiar with adventure racing or endurance sports at all, you’ve no doubt heard of the Iron Cowboy and his remarkable accomplishments. Whether it’s 50 Ironman Races in 50 states in 50 consecutive days or the recent World’s Toughest Race: Eco-Challenge Fiji, James dreams big and shows up day after day. Just as remarkable is Sunny and how she has balanced family life, her own big goals, and her partner’s dreams. We sit down to talk about what it means to have a partnership marriage--the good, the bad and the ugly. Sunny brings wit and wisdom as she discusses how they have prepared for James’ latest challenge - the Conquer 100- which they begin this week. Learn more about Sunny and check out other great resources at: www.drmelissasmith.com/ironcowboy

I don’t get the chance to do many Marathon interviews, I’d like to do more to be honest. But this marathon experience is very unique. I loved talking with Kim about her recent race at the Harrisburg Marathon. We talk about her training, confidence, sacrifices, and most of all her goals. Her goal was more subjective than objective and we talk about why and how this is important to her. If you’ve been listening for a while, you’ve noticed a trend of when people like to eat prior to their IRONMAN© Races, but for marathons, it’s a bit different. She talks about how, why, when, and what she eats prior and during as well. Nutrition is very important for Kim for many different reasons just like most athletes, but allegories to common products make things more challenging. Luis Alvarez is a very accomplished Ironman athlete. His story starts like so many with the realization that he was a little overweight and the desire to get back into shape. But where it went from there I don't think even he expected this. He has raced every single Ironman Triathlon course that has ever been. That is 137 Ironman Triathlons. This includes 15 trips to Ironman Kona in Hawaii and in fact when he started to race Ironman triathlon he was able to secure Kona as his first race. This is of course too many races to cover in one interview so we talk about two signature events in his Ironman career. The first is when in order to maintain his streak of having done all the races he had to race Ironman Mallorca in Spain and then get to Ironman Chattanooga in one day. He calls this his 2-2-2, 2 people, 2 Ironman Races, 2 continents. The second story we touch on is his 100th Ironman finish which was timed to be in Ironman Kona for the 35th anniversary of Ironman Kona and also with his 18 year old son who raced with him. Of course, this was no easy task. This is a special interview. After 137 Ironman races you have to listen to hear what he wants to do next. Thank you Luis Alvarez for joining me in person to record this episode of the Mile after Mile Podcast. It was a joy meeting you and I look forward to racing with you in the future.
