Australian defence officials are preparing to choose whether to buy warships from Germany or Japan. It’s an $11 billion decision – and is about far more than ship design and cost. Given Japan describes Australia as its most important security partner after the United States, our decision will send a signal about whether the relationship is reciprocated. These considerations have been sharpened by the recent appearance of the Chinese navy off our shores – and by the Trump administration's reshaping of American foreign policy. Today, special correspondent for The Saturday Paper Jason, Kootsoukis, on the frigate deal that could cement the Japan-Australia alliance, or sink it. This episode of H2TechTalk dives into the Regional Report on Asia-Pacific from H2Tech's Q2 issue, published in May. Asia-Pacific is forecast to be the fastest-growing region in hydrogen to 2025, as governments continue to adopt green technologies to meet national targets for carbon emissions reduction. Too often, discussion of the 'Indo-Pacific' is heavily focused on China, the United States and India. While these nations are the biggest actors in the region, it is important to note that they are not the only nations with influence. As security policy evolves, we ask how other nations, from big economies such as Japan and Indonesia, to smaller states like Papua New Guinea and Vanuatu, are internalising the concept and incorporating it into national strategy. In this week's episode, Chris Farnham goes in depth on national strategies in the Indo-Pacific region. Chatting Southeast Asia with Greta Nabbs Keller, the Pacific islands with Joanne Wallis, and then turning to Hiroyasu Akutsu for a discussion on Japan, this National Security Podcast offers insight into the shifting sands of the regions' policies. Hiroyasu Akutsu is a Senior Fellow and Professor at the National Institute for Defense Studies in Tokyo. He specializes in political and military issues on the Korean Peninsula and Northeast Asia, Japan-Australia security cooperation, and the Japan-US alliance. Greta Nabbs-Keller is Manager of Indonesia and Southeast Asia programs at the University of Queensland’s International Development unit. Greta’s broader research interests include Indonesian civil-military relations, Indonesia-China relations, politico-security developments in Southeast Asia and the Australia-Indonesia relations. Joanne Wallis is a Senior Lecturer in the Strategic and Defence Studies Centre, Coral Bell School of Asia Pacific Affairs, Australian National University. She completed her PhD in the Department of Politics and International Studies at the University of Cambridge, where she was a Poynton Cambridge Australia scholar and Wolfson College Commonwealth scholar. Chris Farnham is the presenter of the National Security Podcast. He joined the National Security College in June 2015 as Policy and Events Officer. His career focus has been on geopolitics with experience working in and out of China for a number of years as well as operating in Australia and Southeast Asia. Power metal nerds can skip the introduction, however for the rest of you, Jonas Heidgert is a metal vocalist and best known as the front man for Sweden's Dragonland. He's had guest appearances on a number of releases from bands such as Ancestral Dawn, Aldaria, and even Melbourne's Bane of Winterstorm. Jonas has also been fronting 80s Swedish metal band Destiny since 2012 and works with a number of tribute acts. Exhausted at the thought? You and me both! I have a headache just keeping up with one band however Jonas seems to make it all work with ease. In fact, my perception of how time intensive Dragonland would be is quickly dispelled, where despite having formed in 1999 and being based in Scandinavia (a bit of a metal haven!), the band has rarely played live which frees up a lot of time for everyone to be involved in other bands and projects. To my surprise, Jonas tells me that their upcoming Japan/Australia tour will be the longest string of shows in a row that the band will have ever played. It will be their first time in Japan since 2003 playing with Dungeon* and their first ever time in Australia. In other words, if you ever get to see Dragonland live - Count yourself lucky! *Some heavy metal trivia - For the old school Dungeon/LORD fans, you may recall Jonas and Dragonland being featured in the Under the Rising Sun DVD when both Dungeon and Dragonland toured Japan together in 2003 Keeping in theme, Jonas and I spoke about the sporadic nature of the band, the common juggles of life and priorities which have impacted him as a musician (which I could certainly relate to). We also go deep on two of Jonas' favourite bands Dream Theater and Iron Maiden. We talk about our favourite albums and in particular how many Maiden shows we have been to over the years (Jonas wins). Speaking of Maiden, we spoke about his Iron Maiden cover band Made in Iron which at the time of recording they were preparing to play at Cart & Horses in London where Iron Maiden played their first ever shows. To make it even better these shows were straight after Maiden's final two UK tour dates (August 10 and 11) of their Legacy of the Beast 2018 tour. If you check out the Made in Iron page you'll see some cool photos and video from the shows. Certainly a bucket list moment for any dedicated Maiden fan! Jonas and the guys in Dragonland will be touring Australia for the first time ever in September from the 4th until the 8th. All dates are below and tickets can be purchased via Stormrider Touring. For Andy Social listeners, you will already know of the exclusive souvenir you can get if you buy a ticket, so make sure you contact Stormrider Touring if you're keen. Don't know what I'm talking about? Listen to the episode! Dragonland 2018 Australia Tour presented by Stormrider Touring 4 September - Sydney - Utopia Records Meet n Greet only (FREE EVENT) 5 September - Canberra - The Basement with Darker Half, Immorium & Mattersphere - TICKETS

Henry himself is perhaps best recognized around the world as the sweet toned trombonist featured in the Rebirth Brass Band, Galactic, and trumpeter Kermit Ruffins’ band, The Barbecue Swingers. He has also recorded and played with the Dirty Dozen, Treme and New Birth Brass Bands. He has imparted his fiery melodies on stages everywhere from New Orleans neighborhood barrooms to far away festivals before hundreds of thousands in Canada, Japan Australia, Brazil, Hungary, Spain and Thailand and command performances for the ambassadors of Senegal, Morocco, Egypt and Kuwait. Henry has been leading his own band for over 20 years. Like so many other eager young musicians in the Crescent City, he hung around older musicians to build his skills and develop his style. In 1985, the legendary musician, Anthony “Tuba Fats” Lacen, encouraged the 10-year-old prodigy, suggesting he put a band together. The Lil’ Rascals Brass Band has been together now for 26 years, still challenging second liners and rival bands with its hot beats. The ensemble has released two fine, very diverse albums. Since 2008, Henry has been touring with Galactic and has recorded 3 albums with them.In 2011, Henry started a new venture, establishing the Treme Funktet. It’s a funky sextet that’s comfortable moving from jazz to R&B and hip-hop, with an occasional visit to the second-line brass band style. In 2012 Henry won a Grammy Winner with the Rebirth Brass Band for the album Rebirth of New Orleans in the Best Regional Roots Category. Now working on his solo album, Corey Henry plans to pay tribute to all the veteran New Orleans musicians from whom he learned his craft, absorbing all they had to offer.

Long before teaming up with any these vanguard ensembles however, Henry, now 36, had been leading his own band for over twenty years. In 1998, they demonstrated their respect for traditional brass band music on We Shall Walk Through the Streets of the City which includes such classic numbers as “Paul Barbarin’s Second Line.” And in 2001 they released Buck It Like a Horse, a disc filled with sizzling original material, redefining a new era of brass band music. “I wanted to explore something different—do some of my own material and share some of my own ideas,” Henry says of the freedoms offered by Treme Funktet. In 2012, Henry is a Grammy Winner with the Rebirth Brass Band for the album Rebirth of New Orleans in the Best Regional Roots Category. Now working on his solo album, Corey Henry plans to pay tribute to all the veteran New Orleans musicians from whom he learned his craft, absorbing all they had to offer. As a kid, he’d spend hours listening to trombonists like Trummy Young, J.J. Johnson, Al Grey and Jack Teagarden. He hails Fred Wesley as being especially influential to his musical approach. But no matter their style, these masters remain with Henry contributing to his wonderfully uncommon sophistication and tone.
