Jacob Tsypkin is the owner of Anarchos Training Methods. As a long time coach, he has helped people and athletes at every level in CrossFit, from being a former affiliate owner at CrossFit Monterey to helping athletes qualify for the CrossFit Games. I first remember reading about Jacob's coaching when he coached the winner of the UK CrossFit sectionals, Owen Satterly, back in 2010. Jacob was one of the earliest adopters of remote coaching for competitive CrossFit athletes, with his most notable athlete being multiple time games qualifier Sean Sweeney. In addition to coaching, Jacob has organised his thoughts and methods over the years contributing writing to Juggernaut Training Systems and has done podcasts with Reactive Training Systems. Es gibt viel Kritik an dem Westside Barbell System von Louie Simmons und die sicherlich fachlich hochwertigste kommt von Chad Wesley Smith von Juggernaut Training Systems und Mike Israetel von Renaissance Periodisation in diesem Video Aber wie sehr kann jemand das Trainings System beurteilen, der noch nie bei Westside war oder mit Louie Simmons gesprochen hat? Viele Kritikpunkte würden sich in Luft auflösen, wenn beides anders wäre und einige Mythen um Westside wären auch enttarnt. Vieles liegt sicherlich auch an der etwas chaotischen Art von Louie Simmons Wissen in Büchern zu verpacken. Jon and Travis sit down and talk with Juggernaut Training Systems owner and BJJ Blue Belt Chad Wesley Smith. Chad has been competing in a plethora of sports at a high level since he was in High School.  He has thrown an Olympic standard in the Shot Put, achieved the 9th highest total in powerlifting raw, and became a professional Strongman all while still coaching strength and conditioning for all levels of sports.  Even over a zoom call, the atmosphere was infectious. All three guys seemingly having a small on their faces the whole time. Chad is a big man with a bigger than life personality. His wealth of knowledge just flows out effortlessly as he answers each question with great detail leaving almost no stone unturned. Even with such awe-inspiring answers, Chad mentions that he has a YouTube video for everything that goes into even more detail than offered on this show.  Chad's knowledge did not come to him overnight. It was gained from years of hard work and having an attitude that was hungry for information. He is currently enrolled in the exercise science M.A. program at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. He's held three all-time world records in powerlifting in the 220lb and 242lb classes. He's trained hundreds of athletes and regular folks, both online and in-person. A good coach is someone who has a competitive experience and a genuine understanding of weightlifting training programming.  In today's episode of RX'D Radio, we're on the show with weightlifting coach Zack Telander to talk in detail about the world of weightlifting coaching as a profession. He also shares how he uses YouTube as a platform to provide informative content and to reach a wider audience. About Our Guest Zack Telander is an outstanding coach in weightlifting, CrossFit, and to multiple sports at Texas A&M University and Northwestern University. Zack has a USAW-Level 2 coaching certification and is a weightlifting coach at Juggernaut Training Systems and Texas A&M. How Should Weightlifting Programming Look Like   Getting Into Weightlifting Zack grew up as an athlete in a very athletic home. Playing high school football drew him to the weight room. After graduating from the University of Vermont, he went to a CrossFit gym, and there he was inspired to be a coach. After he got his level one in CrossFit, he started to advance. In 2014, he started training with one of the coaches and did his first weightlifting meet. He eventually got his USAW-Level One and got a full-time job as a CrossFit coach. As a CrossFit coach, he was able to teach non-athletic people the "snatch, and the clean and jerk" on a high volume. The golden standard for getting into strength and conditioning is passing the Certified Strength and Conditioning Specialist (CSCS) exam. After passing the CSCS exam, he got an internship at Northwestern University and Texas A&M University. When he got into College Station, he started competing again on weightlifting and started personal training for profit. Using YouTube as a Platform In 2016, he started getting into YouTube. After a while, he started making and uploading CrossFit videos. After releasing his videos, a guy commented that there's no story in his content.  For Zack, he wanted to deliver his expertise and combat issues on the CrossFit community. He started writing and doing voice overs to try and give solutions to these problems. From 1,000 views, he has now reached almost 100,000 subscribers. Weightlifting Coaching as a Career He does remote coaching and coaching in-person. Physical coaching is essential for development. Actual interaction is critical in being a coach. Coaches have to know how to interact and how to calm people down. In terms of ROI, weightlifting coaching as a profession is always going to be relatively low. Most weightlifting coaches do it out of passion, but they have other sources of income. Remote Coaching and RPE You can get a lot stronger with low percentage squats. It's all about positioning and speed. Rate of perceived exertion or RPE is the rating on how hard you work. It's hard to perform a good rate with dynamic movements such as snatch, clean and jerk. Max Aita, the Head of Juggernaut Training Systems Weightlifting Coach, and Zack's mentor invented a scale for RPE. Zack, on the other hand, gives ranges with the eye. By following those rules, they can go as heavy or as light as they want. He uses these techniques to breed a culture in the gym and instill to people that he coaches. Ideal Movement The only real prescription for training is an ideal movement. Overload movements like poles or squats are heavier and more fatiguing than clean and jerk or snatch. There are many tricks you can do if your lifter is fatigued and is not feeling good instead of just putting in arbitrary percentages. When you introduce novelty, the person just forgets that they're lifting heavy. Periodization Models Block periodization: Working on one aspect of training; this can be (1) muscle building, (2) muscular endurance, and (3) strength. Concurrent periodization: Here, you're working on all three aspects, but you undulate the amount of intensity and load in each phase. Daily undulating periodization: If you stress the body, it needs time to recover. The real trick of programming is understanding how you can emotionally tap into the athlete without scaring them. Gauging System To gauge an athlete's performance, he watches them every day. The system is feedback; communicate consistently to athletes as a coach. Reporting fatigue is very hard for athletes, and it takes years of training to understand how to accurately and efficiently assess your own fatigue. You have to determine how many days you're going to implement stressors (e.g., very high intensities clean and jerk). As a coach, you have to see all the factors and what's happening and make the right adjustments unique to each athlete. Outlook on Programming Focus on the quality of the execution as the end goal. As an athlete, you have to take responsibility on how to regulate and make adjustments for yourself. You also have to be interested in experimenting, changing, and holding yourself accountable. Your coach is just there to guide you through all that. Zack works mostly with college students, and he realized they don't really understand a lot of these concepts. It is essential to be interested in the sport enough to learn about the simplest to the most complex terminologies. If athletes understand what they're getting into, they will not end up quitting. Furthermore, he’s had the opportunity to work with and learn from numerous record holders, champion athletes, and collegiate and professional strength and conditioning coaches through his previous job as Chief Content Director for Juggernaut Training Systems and current full-time work here on Stronger By Science. His passions are making complex information easily understandable for athletes, coaches, and fitness enthusiasts, helping people reach their strength and fitness goals, and drinking great beer.   Some of the questions we got to ask him included: Mobility, foam rolling, and stretching (static or dynamic) - what is good for powerlifters vs bad or waste of time? How would you recommend a powerlifter do an off season on season when they are scheduling meets in a year? Is it true that you should only work on weaknesses on off season times? Lets assume you have 16 weeks before the next meet, how much weakness work can you do before you should start focusing on being more specific on the comp movements? Should there be a body fat percentage that is optimal for bigger powerlifters to try to stay around? Is there a good rule of thumb on weight gain when trying to go up a weight class? BB medicine has the limit to 40” on the waist and PLto win says to maintain no greater than 15% bf Cardio - are 10 minute walks enough for most lifters? What would also be good as far as cardio for general health? From Jeff Ash - Is high intensity interval training better than low intensity cardio for strength athletes trying to maximize gains?

With a background in track and field, Smith took his 2 collegiate national championships and continued his success in powerlifting and strongman. Today we discuss Chad’s 7 Scientific Principles of Strength Training 1. Specificity — Training designed to achieve a particular outcome 2. Overload — Is training stimulating enough to drive neural adaptation? Training must become harder overtime through more volume and more weight. 3. Fatigue management — Your recovery process: Besides deload days and proper nutrition and sleep, should include adaptive recovery strategies like ice baths, massages, etc. 4. SRA (Stimulus Recovery Adaptation) — Your training process: Frequency and duration of training and recovery. 5. Variation — Avoid staleness by shifting phases. He has studied and trained under many highly successful coaches, including Ivan Abadjiev, Steve Gough, and Glenn Pendlay. Max is a USA Weightlifting Club Coach, has trained national medalists, National and PWA record-holders, as well as helping bolster the lifting talents of Regional and Games level CrossFit athletes. In the gym, you can usually find him sitting in a yellow chair with his head tilted watching a lift, eating food out of tupperware, or making wise-cracks at whoever might be listening. If given control of the music, you will notice that Max has an unhealthy obsession with Katy Perry, but does his best personal lifts when Enya is cranked to 11.

The guest on the show today is a good industry friend of mine, Greg Nuckols. Greg is the content manager for Juggernaut Training Systems, one of the biggest strength training websites in the world. He's also the owner of Strengtheory.com, a site that has exploded in popularity over the last year due to the quality and originality of the writing that he's putting out. In addition to being a very well educated and exceptional writer, he’s also an elite level powerlifter, with best lifts including 755 pound squat, 475 pound bench and 725 deadlift (so over 1900 pounds total). Greg holds one all-time world record, he used to have two more but those were beaten in the last year, and I know he is itching to get those back. You have to embrace the grind. You have to love what you are doing.
