Women are often accused of being “too emotional”, whether it's PMS, perimenopause, or just plain life. Worse, we're made to believe those emotions make us weak. What if the opposite were true? What if our emotions were our super power, a force we could channel to give us strength in and out of the gym? This week's guest Aimee Anaya Everett is living proof we can do just that, as she has channeled her own emotional turmoil into a world class Olympic coaching and lifting career. Now she helps other women in midlife and menopause do the same. Aimee Anaya Everett is the co-owner of Catalyst Athletics. She has devoted the last 29 years to the sport of Olympic Weightlifting as an athlete and a coach. In her time as a coach, Anaya Everett became the second female International Coach in USA Weightlifting, and the first American female coach to coach at the Olympics. Aimee is also the head lifting coach for Mat Fraser's HWPO Training. Aimee coaches Olympic Weightlifting athletes across all levels, including a multiple American and Pan Am record holder, World Championship multi-medalist, and a Youth World Champion. She also loves coaching beginners and garage lifters with no desire to compete. Aimee has a passion for mental training and toughness, and has a Masters Degree in Human Behavior Psychology. We tend to think of the Olympic lifts as just two lifts, but there are numerous derivates that each provide their own unique benefits. The muscle snatch is one overlooked variation that can help you maximize power while minimizing the technical demands. On this week's episode lifting coach Wil Fleming breaks down the lift and what makes it special. You can follow Fleming on Instagram (@wilfleming), Twitter (@wilfleming) and his website. You can also follow his weightlifting club 1Kilo on Instagram (@1kilo.wl) and pick up some gear in the 1Kilo Shop. His top athlete Mary Theisen-Lappen (@marytheisenlappen) is also a great follow. Fleming was also a guest on Episode 251, Episode 236 and Episode 147, where he shared lessons from hammer throwing, weightlifting, and velocity-based training. Even more details on this topic are in Fleming's books Velocity-Based Training for Weightlifting: Current Concepts & Applications and Complete Olympic Lifting Handbook. For a demonstration and description of the muscle snatch, check out this video from Catalyst Athletics. The topic of how Olympic lifting fits into the training of non-lifters has been a topic we've addressed on numerous occasions on this site. In particular, check out the multi-part roundtable discussion we had with weightlifting coaches (including Fleming). We also covered weightlifting with Matt Foreman on Episode 82 and did this Q&A with legendary lifting coach John Thrush. We discussed Dan Pfaff's 3-day rollover plan which we have written about and also discussed with Pfaff himself. This approach also has many similarities to Bondarchuk's methodology.

I'm often asked about Olympic weightlifting. Specifically, I'm asked about lifts like the clean and jerk, snatch, and power clean, and how to incorporate them into a more general strength training or even bodybuilding program. Should you even include Olympic-style lifts? What are the benefits of Olympic weightlifting? Can it increase your power, speed, explosiveness, and athleticism? Is it dangerous? All that and more in this podcast. I wanted to get an Olympic weightlifting expert on the podcast to help answer these questions. So, I tagged in Greg Everett, owner of Catalyst Athletics, which is a USA Weightlifting National Champion team and a huge educational resource for Olympic weightlifting content. Not only is Greg an accomplished Olympic weightlifter himself, but he's a coach at the world championship level. He's also an author of a dozen books, including Olympic Weightlifting, the world's best-selling book on the subject. So I was happy to have him join me for an interview. In this podcast you'll learn about . . . What Olympic lifting is and how it differs from strength training, bodybuilding, and powerlifting Reason to do Olympic weightlifting (and who shouldn't do it) How to learn the Olympic lifts and how to get started with it How Olympic lifting affects explosiveness and athleticism Olympic lifting's safety and danger compared to basic compounds (and what to do to avoid injuries) Programming considerations (and how to progress) Body fat percentage sweet spots for performance And more . . . So if you've ever wondered about Olympic weightlifting, what you might be missing by not doing any Olympic lifts, and how to get started with Olympic-style weightlifting, listen to this episode. Our guest this week is Greg Everett, owner of Catalyst Athletics and author of the new book “Tough”As the subtitle of Greg's book explains, this book is a guide to building true mental, physical & emotional toughness for success & fulfillment. It's about a lot more than how to be the traditional vision of a “tough guy” - and in today's conversation we talk about why clearly defining your values and purpose are foundational to becoming tough, the four C's that define toughness for Greg, and why tough people should have a journaling routine. To connect with Greg, give him a follow on Instagram where he is @catalystathletics and to order the book online you can check out becomingtough.com where you will find a ton of absolutely glowing reviews for this book. This conversation is not what you might expect. A world renowned olympic weightlifting coach, on the Essential Strength Podcast, talking about toughness - and we're having a conversation about fulfillment, empathy, journaling and discovering your true purpose. But that's the point - being tough doesn't mean falling in line with some pre-historic definition of being the burly man who shoves their feelings down into the deepest recesses of their brain, carries a big stick around and pretends that nothing hurts. Being tough is about having the courage to identify what sets your soul on fire, creates that greatest good in the world and being tough enough to stay authentic to those things.Action PlanYour action plan this week is simple - start a journaling practice. Try it for at least two solid weeks. I know I was super resistant to this for a long time but in the last 4 weeks of podcasts, we've had an Olympic athlete, world record-holding powerlifter and author/weightlifting coach all have one thing in common - they are adamant about the incredible power of journaling. So start - TODAY - by writing down one thing you are grateful for and one affirmation - an “I am”, “I can” or “I will” statement - and do that each day for 2 weeks. I've been doing it for about 4 weeks now, not perfectly, but as many mornings as I remember too, and I can say the mornings I write down my gratitude and my affirmation always set me up for a great day.Alright, that's it for this week. Until next time, we wish you STRENGTH and GOOD HEALTH!

On this week's episode of the Gifted Performance Podcast, we have a man who needs little to no introduction. In 60 seconds, he can convey more information than your favorite coach does in five episodes of a two hour podcast. He is the founder of Catalyst Athletics and stands atop the pinnacle of US Weightlifting as one of the most decorated and well known coaches in the sport. Weighing in at 210 pounds, standing 6 feet 2 inches tall, a jarring 5% body fat year round, twisted steel, sex appeal, the beard that should be feared, wearing the neon purple trunks.....Greeeeeeeeeeeeeeg Everett: @catalystathletics We had the pleasure of chatting with Greg about his training for the Tactical Games, how he approaches competition, and his new book Tough which is Greg's own examination of how to build true mental, physical, and emotional toughness for success and fulfillment. All links for pre orders of Tough can be found in our bio as well as the description of this video on Youtube. This book comes highly recommended by some of the best known and most respected figures in this space. Other topics discussed include: The possibility that we don't see Weightlifting in the Olympics after Tokyo 2021 An overview of the competition that is, The Tactical Games - Greg and Gunshow's hardest transition points going from their previous sports to Tactical training - The integration of Weightlifting and Strongman training into Tactical training Programming errors and managing inputs within Tactical Games training Greg's keys to becoming "Tough" We want to give a massive Gifted shout out and THANK YOU to Greg for coming on. Juliana Riotto is an 87kg weightlifter who competes for Team USA and Catalyst Athletics. She was recruited to weightlifting after winning a clean & jerk event in the 2015 CrossFit Open. Since then, she has competed internationally for Team USA multiple times. Some achievements include medals at Jr. Worlds, Jr. Pan Ams, and Jr. Lifter of the Year in 2018. On the show, we got into Juliana's transition into weightlifting. She grew up with hopes of playing soccer in the Olympics, but transitioned when she realized that weightlifting was a more likely ticket to the games. You'll hear that her story is shaped by much more than lifting weights. Weightlifting is the filet Mignon to the ground chuck of powerlifting and bodybuilding, the First Class to our coach seats on the Iron Game Express. Most people can lift weights, but weightlifting requires power, range of motion, and coordination that squatting or curling in the squat rack simply can’t compare to. In this episode of Iron Culture, we’re joined by Amy and Greg Everett of Catalyst Athletics, former champions in American Weightlifting, and now some of the most prominent coaches and content creators in the sport. Also, Max Aita returns, also a prominent coach working with Juggernaut Training Systems, who competed at a high level in both weightlifting and powerlifting. In this episode of Iron Culture, we explore the unique aspects, history, athletic demands, experience, and training philosophies of weightlifting, and compare and contrast them with the rest of the iron game.
The goal of The Win Your Life Podcast is to illuminate the intersection between prevention and performance. The fitness industry is focused on performance and not always concerned with prevention. On the other hand, our health care system is focused, by necessity, on combatting the overwhelming amount of disease, illness and injury in our society. At the intersection of prevention and performance, there is a group of coaches, medical professionals, business leaders, athletes, and thought leaders that are working to help you Win Your Life. In this series, we are addressing the idea of 'Universal Prescriptions', the notion that there is a best way for us all to exercise, eat, sleep, breath and live. In this episode, Catalyst Athletics Athlete & TPHMN Performance Coach Caitlin Schad tells her story of making the Catalyst Team and tells us how her breathing and meditation practice has helped her in her sport. Caitlin explains why her approach to training, breathwork and meditation is not a one-size-fits all approach and how this has influenced her coaching. On today’s episode, I’m chatting to founder of Bike, Row, Ski and Performance Therapy Ireland. Swapping an engineering degree for a full on career in the world of fitness and physical therapy, this week’s founder has never been one to shy away from risk, especially if it meant spending each day doing what he loved. Starting out by opening what would become North Dublin's first CrossFit affiliate and Ireland's first Catalyst Athletics weightlifting affiliate, things grew, quite literally, from strength to strength and it's been all go ever since! Coming up with the idea to create a brand new studio class involving all three of the Concept2 ergs, he launched his latest venture - aptly named Bike, Row, Ski - and in just a few months of business, began attracting plenty of attention from overseas. Taking me through his journey from the very beginning, here’s what it’s like to be Stephen Weinmann. For more information on Bike, Row, Ski visit https://www.bikerowski.ie and for Performance Therapy Ireland, visit http://performancetherapy.ie.

This was by far one of my best and favorite episodes to date. Much of the discussion transfers over to topics other than weightlifting as we applied them to life, firearms and self defense training, and more. You can find more out about Greg at https://www.catalystathletics.com/

Greg Everett of Catalyst Athletics is almost a household name. Anyone (especially in the USA) interested in weightlifting has heard of Everett—but why? Greg is an incredible coach. But he's an even better producer of content, and that's why he's able to make a great living as a nationally renowned coach. Get that? He's a great coach—and he knows how to tell you so. Greg spends almost as much time sharing his knowledge and building his audience as he does coaching. And that's a very, very smart move. In this episode, Greg talks about the "art of coaching"—the stuff between the reps that makes a trainer a "real coach." He also talks about his business, CrossFit, models and mentors. His website is https://www.catalystathletics.com/
