Are you curious about how the art of data collection and analysis can transform the impact of continuing education in the health professions? What if you could easily prove that learning activities drive tangible outcomes? Today's guest is Dr. Alaina Szlachta, a Learning Architect who improves the results of personal and professional development programs through data enablement. She joins us to unravel the complexities of effective education activity and program evaluation. In a world increasingly driven by data and evidence, understanding the outcomes and impact of educational programs is crucial, but learning professionals in many sectors often struggle to effectively evaluate education activity and program impact. And without proof of outcomes, it's difficult to demonstrate value and make data-driven decisions. Alaina outlines the crucial checkboxes for successful evaluation and highlights the art and science of strategically aligning evaluation variables to forge a persuasive chain of evidence. We also tackle the sometimes daunting task of identifying behavioral change indicators and how to build "indicator muscle." In this episode, you'll hear how to: Develop a simple framework for aligning learning outcomes. Identify indicators that reliably track performance improvement. Leverage AI to efficiently create assessments tailored to your needs. Tune in to hear how to build a rock-solid evaluation process in under an hour. Takeaways Effective evaluation in any field requires a balance of trustworthy evidence, improvement data, and operational insights, acting as a compass for success and growth. Create your impact hypothesis by lining up "dominoes"; start with the change you intend to make, then trace back through outcomes, outputs, and inputs. Visualize this sequence to clarify your strategy and prepare to measure each stage. The distinction between outputs (the immediate, tangible products of a program) and outcomes (the longer-term changes resulting from those outputs) is essential in evaluating the true impact of any initiative. Develop your "indicator muscle" by applying evaluation strategies to personal goals. Choose a goal, define indicators of success, and track them over time. This practice will build your skills in a lower-stakes environment and prepare you for larger, more complex projects. In this special episode, I've invited one of my team members to join me. You're about to hear from Theshel Govender. Theshel is a Senior Learning Architect on our team at Curious Lion and the recent author of a post on our blog that went viral in our corner of the world. We started a project this year in which everybody on the Learning Architect team started to write articles and publish them on our blog. Our goal is for the world and our clients to hear from our team and for us to expand our own understanding of our expertise. Theshel has stepped up as a leader of this project. The article that you'll hear came, at least for me, out of the blue. I didn't even know she was writing it. I hadn't seen an early outline for it; I didn't know anything about it.And I will never forget this - I was at a brewery with my wife and son. I got a notification on my phone from Slack, saying that an article had gone up on our website. Whenever I see that, I'm immediately drawn to reading them. So, I quickly asked my wife, who said it was okay, and I just started reading this article while sipping a beer. My jaw just started to drop as I was reading.I don't want to give too much away, but a big theme of the piece is loyalty. It's an incredibly vulnerable piece in which Theshel shares a difficult period for her creatively and personally that she overcame, and that she feels like she's overcome by working at Curious Lion with the incredible team we have.It made me think about my style of leadership, which I can best describe as inclusive leadership. I've realized from reading Theshel's article that inclusive leadership is what inspires loyalty, and loyalty creates massive leverage. That's ultimately my goal - to create a workplace in which everyone feels like they can bring their best selves to do their best work.I'll hand over the microphone to Theshel, who's going to read her amazing article. Please sit back, relax, and enjoy this episode with Theshel Govender.

It may be that you're having to reassess your current role as an L&D Professional due to circumstances related to the pandemic and the disruption it's inflicting on the world --- especially the workplace. And although Cara North had planned this discussion months ago, it's one of the more important and relevant topics we can talk about today. In this episode, Cara explores L&D job descriptions. More specifically, she talks about three titles: Learning Experience Designer, Learning Engineer, and Learning Architect. And she also brings on Helena Smith from the audience to talk about what these titles mean and what they cover. Give this episode a listen - you'll hear lots of useful information and you can probably identify with most of what is discussed.
During this episode Lindsay shares her thoughts on how teachers should relabel themselves. We often use derogatory language to refer to ourselves and this limits us. We aren’t JUST teachers, we are so much more. Guest: Lindsay Wesner

I recently went to Omaha, NE to spend two days with my guest to create my Life Plan. Her dad, and my dear friend, Arlin Sorensen felt I had lost my purpose after my mom passed away. He was right in that I lost my ability to see it, having pushed me aside to be with my mom for the last six years. Those two days have transformed me on the inside. I feel lit up again with possibility. Including the possibility that taking care of me is a part of my plan. So what is a life plan and how does several years in China as a missionary set one up to help others connect to and define their life's purpose? Laurie Sorensen shares the 5 domains critical to a Life Plan, what happens when one or more is out of alignment and she even shares a few exercises you can do on your own to begin creating your own life plan. If you cannot verbalize your purpose in this world, or if you want to get clear how what you need to do next, you will want to listen to this interview. Laurie Sorensen serves as a Learning Architect with HTG Peer Groups where she is energized by thinking, planning, speaking and writing on topics to help leaders grow. Laurie is the author of the Planning for Success workbook which guides people through Business, Leadership, Life, and Legacy planning the HTG Way. She blends her intuitive ability to connect with people and her passion for learning as she designs experiences that help people to grow personally and go home equipped to make a difference for others. Laurie’s favorite part of her job is walking with leaders as a facilitator of the LifePlan process, a 2-day guided journey. Outside of work hours you can find Laurie spending time with international students or volunteering with Safe Families, a ministry that helps to stabilize families in need.

College for America CFA) has designed a new approach to higher education based on skills learned vs. time spent in the class (contact hours). Students do not get letter grades; there is no teacher to beg for a better grade. Students are assessed with either Not Yet or Mastery. They need to fully master 120 skills to graduate. This program is affordable, and students progress through the course at their own pace, while coached by the team at CFA.
