Welcome back to 'AI Lawyer Talking Tech.' Today, we dissect a legal world fundamentally transformed by artificial intelligence. Investment is surging, with plaintiff litigation platforms like Eve achieving billion-dollar valuations to arm firms fighting corporate giants, delivering justice at a scale never seen before. Simultaneously, law firms are recording immediate financial gains through AI tools, such as timekeeping solutions that instantly boost gross billings by up to 25% by automating overlooked billable hours. This dramatic acceleration mandates new skills, demanding that lawyers move past purchasing boxed solutions to cultivate deep AI fluency, strategically orchestrating Large Language Models (LLMs) to eliminate decades of manual processes like contract review and legal research. Yet, this innovation arrives heavily tethered to intense scrutiny: California has enacted a landmark safety law requiring transparency from frontier AI developers, while legal bodies emphasize clear ethical guardrails, holding attorneys fully responsible for AI consequences to prevent malpractice and confidentiality breaches. From redefining judge protocols to exposing employers to FLSA misclassification risks as AI takes over professional judgment duties, artificial intelligence is forcing the legal industry to pivot from reactive caution to proactive mastery.Revolutionizing Legal Education Through Innovative eLearning2025-09-30 | InvestorsHangout.comTempello.ai Revolutionizes Law Firm Billing: Boost Gross Billings by 25% Overnight with Seamless Clio and 8am MyCase Integration2025-09-30 | Law Firm NewswireThe impact of AI's ongoing evolution on NC's legal landscape2025-09-30 | Carolina Journal OnlineAI Mental Health Tools Face Mounting Regulatory and Legal Pressure2025-09-30 | JD SupraFrom hours to seconds: How AI is transforming law firm reporting2025-09-30 | Legal FuturesWhere should law firms start with their technology strategy?2025-09-30 | Legal FuturesMajor changes in business law demand attorney attention2025-09-30 | UNC School of LawMark Cuban Is Right: The Only Legal Skill That Matters Now Is Making Machines Work for You2025-09-30 | JD SupraHybrid AI Firm Covenant Launches Data Intelligence Platform2025-09-30 | Artificial LawyerNearly a million jobs in London may be changed by AI - which jobs are most at risk?2025-09-30 | AOL UKWhat Gen Z Lawyers Want in 20252025-09-30 | JD SupraSimpleDocs and Law Insider Merge Together2025-09-30 | Artificial LawyerSmarter Law Firm Marketing: AI Tools That Actually Work, with FirmPilot2025-09-30 | Lawyerist Podcast - Legal Talk NetworkOHA Secures Private Financing for Elite's Growth with Francisco Partners2025-09-30 | InvestorsHangout.comLexisNexis Legal Tech Speakeasy: Wed, Oct 12025-09-30 | Artificial LawyerCalifornia enacts AI safety law targeting tech giants2025-09-30 | Tech XploreHow Technology Is Transforming DIY Legal Services2025-09-30 | TechBullionProtecting Access to the Law—and Beneficial Uses of AI2025-09-30 | Electronic Frontier FoundationKatherine Forrest '86 on Her Time as a Federal Judge, the Future of AI, and Wesleyan Memories2025-09-30 | Wesleyan ArgusCalifornia Governor Gavin Newsom signs landmark AI safety bill into law2025-09-30 | SiliconANGLECan Judges Use AI? Welcome back to 'AI Lawyer Talking Tech.' This week, we examine the massive regulatory and technological currents shaping legal practice. AI adoption is driving unprecedented efficiency, as seen when firms use specialized tools to recover thousands of pounds in outstanding debt in under five minutes or employ agentic AI to transform document processing into strategic decision-making through specialized, collaborative agents. Simultaneously, the legal system faces critical threats to its integrity: deepfake technology can fabricate evidence, such as manipulated audio or forged documents, in high-stakes cases like divorce and custody disputes, while generative AI "hallucinations" introduce phantom cases and invented quotations directly into court filings, exposing lawyers to sanctions and prompting courts to retract decisions. To address these dangers, governing bodies are stepping in; California enacted landmark legislation requiring major AI developers to publicly disclose safety protocols and report critical safety incidents—including dangerous deceptive behavior during testing—and new data protection laws, such as Maryland's MODPA, impose heightened restrictions on processing sensitive personal data and information related to individuals under 18. As legal educators integrate mandatory AI certification into core curricula, we explore how legal professionals are building the necessary tech fluency to govern and leverage these powerful tools.Rosen Law Firm Investigating Disney's Child Privacy Violations2025-09-30 | InvestorsHangout.comCalifornia enacts AI safety law targeting tech giants2025-09-29 | Black Hills PioneerCalifornia enacts AI safety law targeting tech giants2025-09-29 | Fox41Yakima.comGarfield Law shares “£7k in 5 minutes” debt recovery and says Mazur judgment is driving firms to AI2025-09-29 | Legal IT InsiderAI in the Legal Profession2025-09-29 | Bracewell LLPIf Brad Pitt Can Be Deepfaked, So Can Divorce Evidence2025-09-29 | Forbes.comReminder: Maryland Data Protection Law Comes into Effect on October 1st2025-09-29 | JD SupraExploring Innovative Strategies for Law Firm Advancement2025-09-29 | InvestorsHangout.comWhen AI 'Lies': The Legal Risks of Hallucinations2025-09-29 | Wisconsin Lawyer MagazineBigLaw Firms Double Down on AI: New Strategies Aim to Boost Attorney Adoption2025-09-29 | JDJournalLaw Schools Go High-Tech: Mandatory AI Certification Now Part of Legal Education2025-09-29 | JDJournalLife as a lawyer taking on AI-fuelled fraud2025-09-29 | Legal CheekMilbank LLP To Host Call for Unsecured Bondholders of Braskem S.A.2025-09-29 | StockTitan.netUnlocking Blockchain and NFTs: A Deep Dive into Technologies2025-09-29 | InvestorsHangout.comExclusive: Lexroom raises $19M to scale AI-powered legal tech across Europe2025-09-29 | Tech Funding NewsAI-powered fraud detection platform raises £1m - advised by Weightmans2025-09-29 | Insider Media LimitedBoost Your Visibility in AI Search With Our New FAQs AI Optimization Tool2025-09-29 | Legal Marketing & Technology BlogFrom Documents to Decisions: How Agentic AI Is Rewiring Legal Workflows2025-09-29 | Legaltech on MediumIus Laboris and Lewis Silkin partner to launch global employment law guide powered by AI2025-09-29 | Legal Technology News - Legal IT Professionals | Everything legal technologyDiving into Data: Managing the Legal Risks of a Data-Driven Economy2025-09-29 | Stoe Rives LLPPittsburgh Tax Review Symposium, AI in Tax Law: Tax Administration & Educating the Next Generation, October 18, 20252025-09-28 | The Faculty LoungeAI and the IP Legal Landscape: Disruption, Opportunity, and the Path Forward2025-09-28 | Legal Technology News - Legal IT Professionals | Everything legal technologyKarisma Kapoor family battle escalates with children alleging massive £2.52 billion estate accounts wiped while court questions will's validity2025-09-27 | Eastern Eye
The legal world is undergoing a profound transformation as artificial intelligence (AI) rapidly reshapes practice and regulatory boundaries, demanding immediate adaptation from professionals. This shift introduces high-stakes challenges, particularly concerning ethical integration, the protection of sensitive client confidentiality, and the integrity of AI outputs, which occasionally fabricate case citations (or "hallucinate"). Lawyers must contend with protecting various forms of client data, including Protected Health Information (PHI) and location data collected by third parties, while establishing that AI systems provide defensible, transparent reasoning rather than functioning as a "black box". In response, governments globally are accelerating the creation of comprehensive frameworks, such as the planned UK AI bill, California's stringent ADMT regulations governing employment decisions, and new data privacy acts like MODPA, alongside state-level pilot programs testing alternative legal business models. This new landscape demands that law firms embrace responsible AI adoption, utilizing structured governance models—like the "pilot, govern, verify, scale" approach—to maintain professional duty and secure a competitive advantage. Far from displacing attorneys, AI integration is expanding the need for human experts in high-growth specialties such as AI & Technology Law, consequently focusing legal roles on critical judgment, strategic negotiation, and risk shifting where human oversight is indispensable. Today, we explore how legal professionals are managing these complex shifts by prioritizing transparency, compliance, and rigorous human oversight in an increasingly automated world.Holding back the AI waves2025-09-29 | Law Society GazetteUsing AI in marketing – how to lead with transparency2025-09-28 | Legal FuturesAI Chatbot Confidentiality: Legal Experts Debate Privileged Protections2025-09-28 | IndexBoxWhy Libraries Matter Now More than Ever to Democracy: Legal Issues Affecting the Future of Public Knowledge2025-09-28 | Seattle UniversityCould AI Adoption Create MORE Jobs for Lawyers? Avaneesh Marwaha, the CEO of Litera, visits the show to discuss his journey from IP lawyer to becoming a legal tech CEO and investor. He discusses the motivations behind his career pivot, including his desire to be a decision-maker and his passion for the business side of law. The conversation delves into the evolution of Litera, from its origins as a document-focused migration software company to its current role as a comprehensive legal tech ecosystem. Avaneesh highlights the company's strategic shift from acquiring to building new technologies. He also emphasizes the importance of Litera's strong partnership with Microsoft and the company's focus on enhancing law firms' productivity and client service. Key Takeaways: Pivoting from Law to Business: Avaneesh's move from practicing IP law to an in-house role and eventually becoming a CEO was driven by his desire for a more active role in business decision-making. He saw lawyers as reactive to business decisions, and he wanted to be at the forefront of the action. The Value of a Law Degree in Business: Avaneesh shares his perspective on the value of a law degree for business professionals, highlighting the critical thinking and risk tolerance skills it provides. He notes that the corporate transaction course he took in law school was particularly beneficial, teaching him about corporate governance and fiduciary duties. Litera's Evolution: Avaneesh discusses how Litera has grown through strategic acquisitions and a recent focus on internal development. He explains how the company integrates various tools, like Kira and Foundation, to create a seamless ecosystem for lawyers within their daily workflows, primarily in Outlook and Word. The Impact of Generative AI: The discussion touches on the transformative impact of AI on the legal tech industry. Avaneesh explains how AI has enabled Litera to accelerate its product development and introduce features that proactively assist lawyers with tasks like document comparison and client relationship management. Build vs. Buy Strategy: Avaneesh outlines Litera's shift from a buy-heavy strategy to a more balanced build-and-invest approach. This change is largely due to the increased efficiency and speed of development enabled by AI tools. Future of Legal Tech: Avaneesh shares his vision for the future of Litera, which includes a focus on "maniacal client service" and helping law firms proactively grow their business. He believes that as automation handles routine tasks, lawyers will have more capacity for business development and client-centric work. Things We Talk About Kira Systems - A company acquired by Litera specializing in AI-powered contract analysis. Foundation Software - A business acquired by Litera focused on knowledge management. Welcome to 'AI Lawyer Talking Tech,' the podcast that explores the future of law in the machine age. Today, we unpack a professional landscape defined by rapid acceleration and profound risk. The legal world is currently experiencing a foundational shift, driven by artificial intelligence that simultaneously promises exponential efficiency and introduces critical new liabilities. We examine the dynamic efforts by courts and policymakers to establish boundaries for AI-generated content and copyright, even as legal tech leaders introduce innovative solutions that streamline complex documentation workflows with over 99% accuracy. However, this new reality brings inherent danger: sophisticated cyber espionage groups are targeting U.S. legal firms for high-value national security intelligence using backdoors like BRICKSTORM, while pervasive data breaches compromise sensitive personal information across the healthcare and academic sectors. From law schools mandating AI fluency to state initiatives testing legal practice reforms using new technology like chatbots, the industry is actively balancing the promise of augmented intelligence against the threat of "AI slop," where rigor and verification remain paramount to ensure documents are enforceable. Join us as we dissect these crucial developments shaping compliance, commerce, and the core definition of legal value today.Copyright and AI: Controlling Rights and Managing Risks; Morgan Lewis, September 23, 20252025-09-24 | Ethics, Info, Tech: Contested Voices, Values, SpacesEdelson Lechtzin Investigates Data Breach for Albany Gastro Clients2025-09-24 | InvestorsHangout.comWashington becomes latest state to test legal practice reforms2025-09-24 | ReutersInnovative Integration Revolutionizes Legal Documentation Workflow2025-09-24 | InvestorsHangout.comChinese Hackers Steal Data from U.S. Legal, Tech Firms for More Than a Year2025-09-24 | Security BoulevardSmartAdvocate's Consistent Excellence Shines at Awards Ceremony2025-09-24 | InvestorsHangout.comValparaiso University Faces Data Breach Investigation2025-09-24 | InvestorsHangout.comUnderstanding the Implications of the Sturgis Hospital Data Breach2025-09-24 | InvestorsHangout.comAccelerate Sales With CLM Implementation2025-09-24 | Epiq SystemsTop Law Schools In Nevada: Acceptance Rates, Rankings, & Academics2025-09-24 | Lexinter Law DirectoryLaw School In Wyoming: University Of Wyoming Law School2025-09-24 | Lexinter Law DirectoryAmy Ross Highlights Importance of AI Fluency for New Attorneys in Reuters2025-09-24 | Ropes & GrayAI-Written Contracts: What to Do When a Client Brings You One2025-09-24 | Wisconsin Lawyer MagazineLegal Department Operations Index 2025: LDO teams join GCs' quest for value2025-09-24 | Thomson ReutersMichelle Kallen Talks Data Center Regulation on Bloomberg Law's "On The Merits" Podcast2025-09-24 | SteptoeUNC5221 Uses BRICKSTORM Backdoor to Infiltrate U.S. Legal and Technology Sectors2025-09-24 | The Hacker NewsMCN Law September round-up | ‘Can ChatGPT win my case?'2025-09-24 | Motor Cycle NewsWhitepaper open for comment: The Unfinished Digital Estate: Culture, Law, and Technology After Death2025-09-24 | OpenID FoundationGuest Column: As AI Helps Close the Justice Gap, Will It Save the Legal Profession or Replace It?2025-09-24 | LawSitesTop 50 Legal Employers Hiring Now: Where the Opportunities Are in 20252025-09-24 | JDJournal[Video] 5 Key Takeaways | The Law of the Machine (Learning): Solving Complex AI Challenges2025-09-24 | JD SupraCities Need a New Model for Incentivizing Responsible AI2025-09-24 | TechPolicy.press5 Key Takeaways | Faulty Intelligence Responding to an AI Incident2025-09-24 | JD SupraThe Living Playbook: How AI Will Truly Transform Legal Work2025-09-24 | Legaltech on MediumThe Case for Multilingual AI in Global Legal Operations2025-09-24 | Legaltech on MediumIf Lawyers Don't Trust AI, They Won't Use It2025-09-24 | Artificial Lawyer

The legal profession is rapidly shifting toward advanced technology, with the largest law firms leading the charge in both adopting and promoting AI tools, many of which they developed internally. This transformation is driven by projections that AI can save lawyers approximately 190 hours annually, prompting firms to re-engineer workflows and accelerate the shift away from the billable hour toward fixed-price models. Innovation centers, such as Ulster University's Centre for Legal Technology (CLT), are applying AI to large-scale challenges like mass case management and reinventing processes like conveyancing. Crucially, the focus is pivoting to data-centric AI, emphasizing superior data quality over the scale of generalized large language models (LLMs), to achieve the precision required for legal work. However, this rapid integration is fraught with risk; multiple cases have resulted in lawyers receiving sanctions for submitting legal documents containing fabricated case citations or "hallucinated" content from AI chatbots. Consequently, regulators emphasize that human judgment, verification, and accountability are absolutely essential for all AI-generated output. This environment demands widespread upskilling, prompting programs like the CILEX AI Academy, and is spurring legislative regulation, such as California's "No Robo Bosses" Act (SB 7) aimed at overseeing AI use in employment decisions.Biggest law firms lead way in using – and showing they use – AI2025-09-21 | Legal FuturesUlster Uni launches Centre for Legal Technology, pioneering future of justice2025-09-21 | NewsLetterUnlock Your Options: Discover Over 50 Alternative Career Paths for Attorneys2025-09-21 | JDJournalAI versus the human touch2025-09-20 | Law Society GazetteJudge Gives Humiliating Punishment to Lawyers Caught Using AI in Court2025-09-19 | FuturismIt's A Small (Language Model) World After All2025-09-19 | Above The LawAssociates' Dissatisfaction With Firm Tech: What We Have Here Is A Failure To Communicate2025-09-19 | Above The LawChinese Cyber Actors Impersonate House Committee Chair: Key Risks Companies Must Understand2025-09-19 | JD SupraThree ways AI will change the legal sector… and three ways it won't2025-09-19 | RaconteurHow to adapt a law firm for AI2025-09-19 | RaconteurLaw360 Cites Elevate Expert Pratik Patel on Law Firms' Path to AI Adoption2025-09-19 | Elevate ServicesGoogle-backed AI company insists jobs are safe as it buys first UK law firm2025-09-19 | Roll On FridayAI and Arbitration – A Perspective from the UAE2025-09-19 | Clyde & CoWhy AI must power the next wave of Social Housing delivery2025-09-19 | Local Government LawyerIs It All About the Prompts? Folge von How to Legal Tech. Viel Spaß beim Reinhören und ein großes Dankeschön an Wolters Kluwer, die die Umsetzung unserer Podcasts möglich machen.
Here are the top 5 takeaways from this episode with Ray Allen of ContractsCounsel:* ContractsCounsel is Transforming Legal Services with a Marketplace Model:ContractsCounsel connects consumers, small businesses, and startups with lawyers through a competitive, flat-fee proposal system. The platform emphasizes transparency, defined scope of work, and easy communication, making legal services more accessible and predictable for clients.* Flat Fees and Productized Legal Services Reduce Disputes and Increase Satisfaction:The platform encourages lawyers to offer fixed-fee services, which helps clients understand costs upfront and reduces billing disputes. Data from ContractsCounsel shows that disputes are rare, especially with flat-fee arrangements, and user satisfaction is high (average rating 4.9/5).* Subscription and Instant Bid Features Enable Lawyers to Modernize Their Practice:ContractsCounsel offers tools like instant bids (pre-set proposals for common services) and subscription-based offerings (e.g., monthly legal chat access). These features help lawyers productize their services, save time, and create recurring revenue streams, while also providing clients with affordable, ongoing legal support.* The Legal Market Opportunity is Vast and Largely Untapped:A significant portion of legal needs in the U.S. go unmet due to traditional billing models and lack of transparency. By shifting to fixed fees and subscription models, lawyers can tap into a much larger market—potentially worth over a trillion dollars—by serving clients who previously avoided legal help due to cost uncertainty.* Legal Tech, AI, and Passive Income are Shaping the Future of Law:The role of AI tools, legal chatbots, and digital product marketplaces (like selling legal templates) in the legal industry is growing. Lawyers who embrace technology, automation, and new business models (such as selling templates or offering AI-powered information bots) will be better positioned to serve clients and generate passive income.__________________________Learn more about ContractsCounsel.Want to maximize your law firm? Welcome to a fascinating exploration of the hidden legal battles shaping tomorrow's technology. Predictive algorithms have become the crystal balls of modern business, forecasting everything from home prices to healthcare costs, but they're also becoming the center of high-stakes courtroom dramas worth hundreds of millions of dollars.Across the globe, from Texas courtrooms to China's Supreme People's Court, judges and juries are answering a profound question: who owns the right to predict the future? The House Canary v. Amrock case resulted in a staggering $600 million verdict over real estate valuation algorithms, while Alibaba secured a 30 million RMB judgment against a company that allegedly scraped its predictive marketing tools. Even industrial applications aren't immune, with companies like Shen Group successfully protecting predictive design software for machinery components. What makes these cases particularly compelling is how they're redefining intellectual property law. Courts are now recognizing that AI model weights, the mathematical parameters tuned during training, qualify as protectable trade secrets. Data pipelines, prediction engines, and algorithmic structures have all received similar protection. The real drama often unfolds when employees change companies, raising thorny questions about what constitutes general expertise versus proprietary knowledge that belongs to the former employer.Healthcare prediction presents especially valuable territory, with ongoing battles between companies like Qruis and Epic Systems, or Milliman and Gradient AI, demonstrating how patient data forecasting creates immensely valuable intellectual property. Whether it's forecasting home values on Zillow or optimizing Medicare billing, these predictive tools aren't just convenient features, they're corporate crown jewels worth protecting at almost any cost.Ready to dive deeper into the invisible rules governing innovation? Subscribe now and join us as we continue to decode the legal frameworks shaping our technological future. The algorithms may predict tomorrow, but who gets to own those predictions? That's what we're exploring on Intangiblia.Get the book!Send us a textSupport the show
Welcome to 'AI Lawyer Talking Tech,' where we explore the dynamic intersection of artificial intelligence and the legal world. Today, we delve into a landscape undergoing significant transformation, as AI rapidly revolutionizes legal practice, from streamlining complex medical record reviews and automating case management tasks to enhancing access to justice. This powerful technology is democratizing expertise and offering unprecedented efficiencies, with agentic AI systems now able to interpret complex objectives and execute multistep workflows with industry-standard precision. However, alongside these advancements come substantial challenges. We'll examine the escalating legal battles over content ownership and intellectual property, with publishers confronting tech giants like Google and AI services such as Perplexity AI over unauthorized content use, copyright infringement, and revenue impact. We'll also discuss critical ethical and regulatory questions, including the debate around granting legal rights to AI systems and the emerging field of "model welfare". Furthermore, we will consider the FTC's inquiries into AI safeguards for children and the controversial use of AI in authorizing Medicare treatments, which has drawn bipartisan criticism. Finally, we'll touch on the imperative for human oversight, the risks of AI "hallucinations" in legal filings, how law firms can protect their AI innovations through patent eligibility, and the evolving demands of digital marketing in this technologically advanced era.Penske Media Challenges Google Over AI Content Practices2025-09-14 | InvestorsHangout.comBritannica, Merriam-Webster Sue Perplexity in Escalating AI Copyright Battle2025-09-13 | TekediaShould AI Get Legal Rights?2025-09-13 | Stephen's LighthouseFTC Inquires AI Companies on Safeguards for Children and Pilot Program Uses AI to Authorize Medicare Treatments — AI: The Washington Report2025-09-13 | Mintz LevinThe Balancing Act: Tracking Technology Trends and Risk Mitigation Techniques2025-09-12 | JD SupraPresident Trump Might Extend The TikTok Ban Again Next Week, But Should He?2025-09-12 | Forbes.comSuspended lawyer accused of citing hallucinated case in bid to reinstate law license2025-09-12 | ABA JournalHow Clients Find Lawyers in 2025 (And What It Means for Your Firm)2025-09-12 | Articles, Tips and Tech for Law Firms and LawyersFor Agentic AI, Intelligence Is Only Half The Battle2025-09-12 | Crunch BaseAI in Arbitration: A Perspective from Chile2025-09-12 | Clyde & CoEmpowering Law Firm Leaders Podcast: How to plan for your firm's success2025-09-12 | Legal FuturesLawfront selects GenAI marketplace Jylo: “This is about democratising expertise”2025-09-12 | Legal Technology InsiderScotland's lawtech boom can take our legal firms to a new level2025-09-12 | Insider.co.ukLovable, Harvey Does A2J, Legora, LegalOn, LexisNexis2025-09-12 | Artificial LawyerLawfront chooses Jylo as key AI platform for its regional leader law firms2025-09-12 | Legal Technology News - Legal IT Professionals | Everything legal technologyGoodwin Announces Successful Roll Out of AI Legal Platform Legora Firmwide2025-09-12 | Legal Technology News - Legal IT Professionals | Everything legal technologyHow Agentic AI enables Legal Case Management Automation2025-09-12 | Legaltech on MediumFTC Announces Children's Privacy Enforcements and Launches AI Chatbot Inquiry2025-09-12 | Nelson MullinsHelpful Reminders for Patent Eligibility of AI, Machine Learning, and Other Software-Related Inventions2025-09-12 | McCarter & EnglishDOE Opportunity to Lease INL Land for AI Data Centers and Integrated Energy Infrastructure2025-09-12 | Holland & KnightFrom Algorithm to Asset – Protecting AI Innovations2025-09-12 | CooleyHow AI Is Revolutionizing Medical Record Review for Legal Teams2025-09-11 | BusinessABCHigh Point University Celebrates Grand Opening of Law School2025-09-11 | InvestorsHangout.com

In episode #577 of Lawyerist Podcast, discover how to use AI to drive firm growth, expand practice areas, and strengthen client relationships while avoiding the trap of treating it as a simple efficiency tool. Too often, conversations about AI in law stop at shaving time off tasks or reducing headcount, but AI holds far more potential than cost-cutting. Innovation strategist Sam Harden explains why firms should resist the temptation to view AI as a staff replacement and instead embrace it as a growth engine. By experimenting with generative tools and even “vibe coding,” lawyers can create new services, improve client experiences, and reach entirely new markets. Rather than narrowing practice, AI can open doors to expansion, innovation, and more sustainable business models—helping firms future-proof themselves in a rapidly evolving market. Ideal for growth-minded lawyers, firm leaders, and legal innovators who want to use AI strategically to scale smarter, serve better, and stay ahead. A conversation with Ben Chiriboga, Chief Growth Officer at legal CRM company Nexl and host of the This Legal Life podcast. Ben shares his journey from a litigator to a legal tech innovator. He recounts how an early e-discovery tool using natural language processing completed in six hours what had taken him six months, leading to an epiphany about the power of legal technology. The conversation delves into the legal industry's historical resistance to technology, prioritizing billable hours over efficiency, and how Ben leveraged his legal experience to transition into a new role in tech. Ben discusses the challenges of building a legal tech company and the critical distinction between a general CRM and one designed specifically for law firms. The episode concludes with a thought-provoking discussion on the impact of AI on the legal profession, focusing on what aspects of law are truly "fundamental" and what new roles and jobs AI will create. Key Takeaways The Power of Tech: Legal tech tools can drastically improve efficiency, as demonstrated by an e-discovery tool that performed six months of work in just six hours. Transitioning Careers: A background in law can be a valuable asset in the legal tech sector, but success requires adapting to new skills like sales, marketing, and growth strategy. The "Why" Behind a Legal CRM: General CRMs are built for sales teams with built-in incentive structures, whereas a legal-specific CRM, like Nexle, is designed to passively collect and enrich data without requiring lawyers to manually input information. The Fundamentals of Law: The human element—relationship building, counseling, and strategic advisory—is the core function of a lawyer that AI cannot replicate. The Future of Legal Jobs: AI's true impact will not be in better-drafted motions, but in the creation of new "legal adjacent" roles and business models that merge legal expertise with technology and data.

Daniel Lewis has witnessed legal technology's evolution from multiple vantage points that few others can claim. As a Stanford law student in 2012, he and classmate Nik Reed co-founded the legal research startup Ravel Law with the audacious goal of taking on LexisNexis and Westlaw using machine learning and data analytics – at a time when such challengers were few and far between. Not only was Ravel Law pioneering in its own right, but it also spearheaded and funded the Caselaw Access Project, an ambitious partnership with Harvard Law School's Library Innovation Lab to digitize and provide free and open access to every official court decision ever published in the United States. After Ravel's acquisition by LexisNexis in 2017, Lewis spent the next five years leading product teams within the legal research giant, including as vice president and general manager of its Practical Guidance and analytics products. This dual perspective – startup founder turned corporate executive – helped shape his understanding of what works and what doesn't when building technology for lawyers. Today, as CEO and global chief executive of LegalOn Technologies, Lewis leads a 600-person company that is tackling contract review with a fundamentally different approach. Rather than relying solely on tech-enabled services or raw AI that can hallucinate legal advice, LegalOn combines large language models with attorney-developed playbooks to help in-house legal teams achieve up to 85% time savings on contract review. The company just raised $50 million, for a total raise of $200 million across multiple funding rounds – which Lewis says makes it the most well-funded AI company focused on in-house contract review – and announced a strategic partnership with OpenAI to develop AI agents for legal workflows. In this wide-ranging conversation, Lewis shares hard-won insights about the realities of legal tech entrepreneurship, from the "deranged" confidence required to challenge industry giants as a law student to the leadership lessons learned managing teams through multiple business transformations. He discusses why the current moment represents the most significant opportunity for legal tech innovation in decades, how AI agents will reshape routine legal work, and what he's learned about building technology that lawyers don't just try once but actually integrate into their daily practices. This week we are joined by Patrick DiDomenico and Kevin Klein, two longtime builders of knowledge programs and legal tech gatherings. They walk through the evolution of KM&I for Legal, now entering year three, and the debut of its co-located counterpart, Legal Tech Connect. Both events run in New York on October 22 and 23, with a single community, two distinct agendas, and one big goal, stronger conversations across buyers, builders, and backers of legal tech.Patrick traces the roots, from the ARK KM era to the launch of KM&I, then to twisting Kevin's arm to join as a producer. A larger home opened the door to ambitious programming, Ease Hospitality at 3rd and 40th near Grand Central. Think bright rooms, live plants, strong AV, plenty of seating, and an adjacent tenant lounge with coffee, terrace, and breakout nooks. Lessons from last year show up in smart touches, an overflow room streaming the main stage for those who need to handle calls or email without missing core content, longer breaks for real conversations, and, yes, food worthy of repeat trips.Format matters here. KM&I holds firm on peer-to-peer sessions led by law firm professionals. Providers participate through tight five-minute spotlights between talks, plus optional demo rooms during generous coffee breaks and lunch. Legal Tech Connect flips the lens, product stories on stage, founder journeys, market forces, and regulatory themes. A crossover ticket lets attendees roam freely between both programs. Breakouts return by popular demand, a C-suite roundtable, KM 101 for newcomers, a track for KM attorneys and PSLs, and a managers and directors forum that grew from attendee feedback.Themes thread across both days. ROI from AI and KM tools appears throughout, from data strategy as a differentiator to co-development case studies. Expect a lively take on the rise of the legal engineer, with skills for scaling tools and driving adoption, plus a frank discussion about where these roles sit inside firms. Professor Michele DiStefano opens with client centricity, drawing on her research and book, with every attendee receiving a copy. She then moderates a session at Legal Tech Connect on how legal tech companies sell to law firms, bridging provider goals with buyer needs. Another panel stages the AI conversation among a partner, pricing director, client, and innovation lead, a timely look at value, billing, and collaboration. The bigger story is community. Patrick and Kevin highlight the peer network that forms in hallways and over coffee, mentors found by chance, and ideas that travel home in workable form. Legal Tech Connect brings investors and founders into the mix, which raises the quality of dialogue on funding, product focus, and adoption. Looking ahead, they predict fewer conferences, higher quality bars, and a shift toward substance over appearance. Listeners who want more details, including registration, should visit kmniforlegal.com and legaltechconnect.com. Watch the YouTube version of this episode HEREAre you looking for advice on how to keep a firm running smoothly? In this episode of the Maximum Lawyer Podcast, Tyson interviews Gary Allen, a lawyer-turned-legal tech founder who shares lessons learned from witnessing two law firm collapse. Gary talks about inefficiencies and cultural barriers in traditional firms, then explains how these experiences inspired the creation of Lean Law.Gary shares his thoughts on the issues that can lead to the collapse of a law firm. One big issue is too much overhead in comparison to what a firm is making. In Gary's experience, his former employer paid too much overhead (i.e. rent, utilities), but the firm did not bring in as many clients which led to a lack of money being generated. There needs to be a formula that is followed to ensure clients are being brought in so a business can sustain itself. Another issue is time overhead, in which lawyers are working but the hours are not billable. This can cause lawyers to put in so much time and energy into work that they cannot be paid for.Gary delves into the creation of Lean Law, which is a company focused on streamlining law firm financial management through technology. Lean Law is the financial operating system for many law firms and helps firms process legal fees. It integrates Quickbooks, so firms can personalize their financial management to ensure fees flow in and out of the firm. It is a great tool for law firms to have so all finances are streamlined and money is in order.Take a listen!01:11 Lessons from Large Firm Failure03:27 Transition to a Healthier Firm10:57 Overhead Awareness and Cost Control 12:09 Transition to Legal Tech: The Spark for Lean Law 14:44 Vision for All-in-One Legal Software 30:58 AI Disrupting Legal Marketing and PPC Tune in to today's episode and checkout the full show notes here. This week, we welcome longtime friend and legal tech veteran Ken Crutchfield, founder of Spring Forward Consulting. Ken brings his extensive experience from major legal information vendors like Thomson Reuters, Bloomberg, and Wolters Kluwer into a timely and candid discussion about the current phase of artificial intelligence in the legal industry. Comparing today's generative AI surge to the American Industrial Revolution, Ken describes this moment as the “Wild West” era—full of promise, hype, overinvestment, and, critically, few rules.Drawing historical parallels to railroads, oil barons, and steel magnates, Ken illustrates how unchecked growth and technological innovation can outpace regulation until market forces or policy catch up. He notes the resurgence of large-scale infrastructure investment, now not in steel or steam, but in compute power and data centers. Just as J.P. Morgan helped stabilize chaotic markets in the 19th century, Ken suggests today's AI frontier needs a similar recalibration, and possibly new rules of engagement. The conversation shifts toward the practical realities of legal tech adoption. Ken emphasizes that law firms' expectations of perfection often collide with startups' resource limitations. Vendors need to rethink how they engage with firms by building credibility, focusing on integration, and delivering actual use-case wins. Firms, in turn, must move beyond the billable hour mindset and consider new metrics like Return on Experience. Adoption is no longer optional, it's strategic, competitive, and increasingly client-driven.Ken also unpacks the looming implications of content rights and data ownership in the age of AI. If firms aren't investing in data hygiene now, they risk being left behind when more sophisticated AI tools demand clean, structured, and secure datasets. AI isn't just about automating workflows, it's about being ready to plug into a future where interoperability, metadata, and permissions will dictate who thrives and who gets leapfrogged. Finally, Ken calls for scenario planning: not just reacting to what OpenAI or Anthropic might do next, but anticipating it. Firms and vendors alike should double down on what works, define success before launching new projects, and invest in meaningful adoption strategies. In a world moving this fast, it's no longer about who gets there first, it's about who gets there with a plan.Listen on mobile platforms: Apple Podcasts | Spotify | YouTube[Special Thanks to Legal Technology Hub for their sponsoring this episode.] Blue Sky: @geeklawblog.com @marlgebEmail: geekinreviewpodcast@gmail.comMusic: Jerry David DeCiccaTranscript
