In this episode of Redefining CyberSecurity, Sean Martin is joined by Frida Torkelsen, a Solution Architect, and Maged Helmy, a professor of AI, to explore how law firms and in-house counsel are applying AI agents to reduce costs, improve efficiency, and unlock strategic capabilities—while navigating critical privacy and security concerns.Frida explains how large firms are seeking to extract value from their troves of historical legal data through bespoke AI agents designed to automate workflows and improve institutional knowledge sharing. Smaller firms, on the other hand, benefit by building narrow, purpose-driven agents that automate core functions and give them a tactical edge. This democratization of capability—fueled by faster iteration and reduced development cost—could be a strategic win for niche firms that are disciplined in their focus.Maged emphasizes the architectural shift AI agents introduce. Unlike static queries to large language models with fixed knowledge, agents access tools, data, and live systems to execute tasks dynamically. This expands the use case potential—but also the risk. Because agentic systems operate probabilistically, consistent outputs aren't guaranteed, and testing becomes more about evaluating outcomes across a range of inputs than expecting deterministic results.Security risk looms large. Maged shares how a single oversight in permissions allowed an agent to make system-wide changes that corrupted his environment. Frida cautions against over-permissive access, noting that agents tapping into shared calendars or HR databases must respect internal boundaries and compliance obligations. Both guests agree that human-in-the-loop validation is essential, especially in environments with strict data governance needs.Law firms must reassess both internal information architecture and team readiness before implementing agentic systems. Start with a clear understanding of the business problem, validate access scopes, and track outcomes for accuracy, speed, and cost. A conversation with Yelena Shkolnik, a partner at Jump Capital, a venture capital firm with growing interest in legal tech companies. Yelena shares her journey from investment banking and entertainment finance to the world of venture capital, highlighting her focus on identifying transformative technologies. The conversation delves into Jump Capital's investment philosophy, particularly their thematic approach and focus on Series A and B funding rounds. Yelena articulates what makes a legal tech company attractive to Jump, emphasizing the importance of demonstrated traction, a strong team dynamic, and a deep understanding of the specific challenges and opportunities within the legal industry. Yelena provides a nuanced perspective on the billable hour model and the potential for technology, including AI, to reshape legal workflows and access to justice. She also shares her thoughts on the necessity of legal background for founders and whether legal tech will eventually just become "tech". Key Takeaways: A deep understanding of the legal industry's nuances and specific problems is crucial for attracting legal tech investment. While AI presents significant opportunities, the entrenched nature of law firms and the complexities of legal workflows require thoughtful and targeted solutions. The rise of legal operations within enterprises is driving demand for technologies that enhance efficiency and manage risk. The consumer side of legal tech holds significant potential for expanding access to justice.

In this episode, we sit down with Andy Seavers, CEO and co-founder of Case Status, a groundbreaking client engagement platform built to transform how law firms communicate with their clients. From his early days chasing a record deal with his high school band to becoming a tech-savvy entrepreneur deeply entrenched in legal innovation, Andy shares a candid and inspiring journey of resilience, creativity, and business insight. He opens up about the origin story of Case Status, born out of real pain points in the legal world, and how they pushed against industry resistance to bring modern, client-centered solutions to law firms across the country. Andy dives into how Case Status leverages AI, data, and sentiment analysis to improve client satisfaction and streamline legal operations—without cutting corners on care or compliance. He also talks about building a company culture that's “RAD” (Radically Disruptive, Actively Curious, and Dedicated to the Team), the lessons learned from startup life and raising over $30 million in funding, and the personal rhythms that keep him grounded—whether that's flying a plane, playing guitar, or hitting the golf course. This conversation is packed with wisdom for entrepreneurs, technologists, and legal professionals alike. Takeaways: The legal industry, traditionally resistant to change, is now embracing technology—especially in client engagement and communication—as a necessary step toward improving service and efficiency.Providing transparency, timely communication, and proactive service is no longer optional. Law firms are being challenged to match the accessibility and visibility clients expect from other industries, like banking.Artificial intelligence is not about eliminating jobs in law; it's about enhancing communication, improving response quality, and enabling legal teams to focus on complex tasks by handling repetitive ones more efficiently. Some of the most impactful tech advancements happen in industries others overlook. By identifying real pain points in legal client communication, significant business opportunities can emerge.Building a strong internal culture with clear values—like being radically disruptive, actively curious, and team-oriented—can align a team, fuel innovation, and maintain motivation through challenges.Operating frameworks like EOS (Entrepreneurial Operating System) help teams align around long-term goals, make smarter decisions, and stay focused on impactful work across all departments.Creating separation between work and home, building in-person culture hubs, and carving out personal time for hobbies or passions can be essential for avoiding burnout—especially in high-growth startup environments.
Niki Black, Principal Legal Insights Strategist at AffiniPay, elaborates on the transformative impact of generative AI on the legal profession. She asserts that AI's ability to enhance efficiencies and predict pricing structures will lead to the eventual demise of the billable hour, suggesting that AI's integration will soon become indispensable in legal practices. According to Niki, sophisticated consumers of legal services like insurance companies and in-house counsels will drive the adoption of AI by expecting faster, more cost-effective solutions. These market pressures, alongside AI's ability to provide insightful data analysis and predictive analytics, will compel law firms, especially boutique and midsize firms, to adapt or face being outcompeted.Niki also touches on the ethical implications and potential risks of not adopting AI, likening future generative AI's indispensability to past shifts like the adoption of cloud computing and social media awareness. She argues that AI will lead to more competitive and client-centered pricing strategies while alleviating some of the negative client experiences associated with hourly billing. Additionally, Niki highlights the emerging trend where AI's capabilities in legal practice management and billing software enable law firms to leverage their internal data for more profitable and efficient operations, emphasizing the rapid pace at which AI is expected to transform legal services.__________________________Check out my other show, the Law for Kids Podcast.Get Connected with SixFifty, a business and employment legal document automation tool.Sign up for Gavel, an automation platform for law firms.Visit Law Subscribed to subscribe to the Substack newsletter to get notified about every episode, listen from your web browser, and for additional content.Follow @lawsubscribed everywhere.Sign up for the Subscription Seminar waitlist at subscriptionseminar.com.Check out Mathew Kerbis' law firm Subscription Attorney LLC. In January, a merciless firestorm swept through the Pacific Palisades and surrounding areas of Los Angeles, becoming the most destructive wildfire in the city's history. Driven by hurricane-force Santa Ana winds and fueled by record-dry conditions, the Palisades Fire destroyed over 6,800 structures, burned nearly 24,000 acres, and dramatically altered the lives of thousands of residents. Among them were three individuals with deep ties to the legal tech community, each of whom lost their home to the fire. This week on LawNext, we speak with those three individuals: Valerie Chan, founder of the legal PR firm Platform PR. Rick Merrill, former founder of Gavalytics and current COO of Bridgeline Solutions. Adam Camras, co-founder of Lawgical, longtime CEO of the Legal Talk Network, and chief collaboration officer at InfoTrack. These three legal tech leaders share their harrowing experiences as the flames approached, the devastating aftermath of losing their homes, and their ongoing journey of recovery and rebuilding. Their stories offer a rare and intimate glimpse into how even those with resources and professional expertise face overwhelming challenges when confronted with natural disaster. From the initial evacuation decisions to battles with insurance companies and uncertain rebuilding timelines, this conversation reveals both the practical realities and profound emotional impact of sudden, catastrophic loss. We also want to mention a related project, California Fires Legal Resources, in which the legal tech community, spearheaded by Clio, worked together to launch a website devoted to providing legal resources related to the LA fires, both for victims of the fires and legal professionals working on behalf of those victims. In the second episode of our Legalweek series, Laura and Kevin sit down with Matt Berry and Greg Anderson from QuikData, a company challenging the status quo in the legal tech space. Matt shares QuikData's mission to offer low-cost, on-premise eDiscovery solutions, bucking the industry's shift toward cloud-only platforms. Alongside him, Greg, VP of Product and Client Services, brings his 20+ years of legal tech experience to the conversation, offering insights into how QuikData prioritizes security, affordability, and convenience for corporations and law firms. We learn about their origin story, tracing back to their first venture, Lateral Data, and the development of Viewpoint, an eDiscovery platform ultimately acquired by Xerox. Matt and Greg discuss how those early experiences shaped their vision for QuikData. We also discuss the role of AI in the industry, how it's reshaping workflows, and QuikData's practical approach to leveraging AI to enhance, not replace human decision-making in complex legal processes. This episode delivers a refreshing perspective on innovation, security, and the power of going against the grain.Matt Berry is an attorney, serial entrepreneur, and co-founder of QuikData, a platform rethinking how legal teams manage eDiscovery and secure collaboration. Before QuikData, Matt co-founded Lateral Data, where he and his team developed Viewpoint, an end-to-end eDiscovery solution focused on on-premises and enterprise deployments. Earlier in his career, Matt co-founded Diamed with his wife Simone—a mail delivery medical supply company that served over 30,000 patients nationwide with diabetes testing supplies and related products. A graduate of Rice University, Matt is also a former Division I tennis player and still finds time to stay active on the court. His diverse background across industries informs his thoughtful approach to building tools that solve real-world problems.Greg Anderson serves as the Vice President of Product and Client Services at QuikData. With over twenty years of experience in legal technology, he specializes in the design and application of E-Discovery solutions, enjoying the challenge of problem solving by leveraging both traditional and non-traditional approaches to address complex or unique problems. His background includes key product management roles at Lateral Data and Conduent, and prior to joining QuikData, he led an E-Discovery Project Management team at Norton Rose Fulbright, where he focused on multinational matters.QuikData is a software development company specializing in eDiscovery and data room solutions for legal service providers, law firms, corporate legal departments, and financial institutions. Founded in 2016 and headquartered in Houston, Texas, QuikData offers intuitive and powerful tools designed to streamline complex legal data management tasks. Their flagship product, Quik E-Discovery, is an end-to-end platform that facilitates the entire electronic discovery process, including data processing, analysis, review, and production.
This week, we sit down with Sam Flynn, COO and co-founder of Josef, to separate substance from hype in the rapidly evolving world of legal tech. Sam shares his passionate stance that “RAG is not dead,” defending Retrieval-Augmented Generation (RAG) as a foundational and still deeply relevant method for deploying AI in the legal industry—despite the flashy allure of agentic AI. His nuanced take reminds listeners that success in this space depends not only on the sophistication of the technology, but on doing the “boring” foundational work: ensuring data integrity, context-aware chunking, and responsible workflows.Throughout the discussion, Sam champions the idea that great legal technology should not just enhance expert workflows but make legal information accessible to non-experts. With examples from Josef's clients like L'Oréal, Bumble, and Bupa, Sam illustrates how Josef's tools allow legal departments to offload routine work through reliable self-service systems—freeing up time for more strategic thinking while improving speed, compliance, and consistency across organizations. He makes the case that empowering end users with trustworthy tools isn't just good tech—it's a new model for scaling legal and compliance services.A key highlight is Josef's Roxanne project, developed in collaboration with Housing Court Answers and NYU. Roxanne is an AI-powered tool designed to help tenants in New York navigate the complexities of housing law. Sam outlines the safeguards that ensure Roxanne's answers are accurate and compliant, such as closed-domain data sources, human-in-the-loop validation, and smart escalation workflows. The conversation touches on the broader access to justice (A2J) implications of this technology—arguing that when designed carefully, AI can amplify the reach and impact of legal aid organizations by orders of magnitude. The episode doesn't shy away from the tensions legal professionals feel when automation enters their domain. Sam offers a powerful reframing: instead of seeing these tools as a threat, lawyers should view them as opportunities to offload low-value tasks and expand their influence. The goal, he says, is not to cut jobs—but to redefine the kind of work legal professionals do, making space for more proactive, strategic, and meaningful engagements within organizations and communities. As the conversation wraps, Sam shares his optimism about the future—tempered by a clear-eyed understanding of the human factors that will determine success. While the technology is ready, the question is whether legal professionals will step up and take the lead. His call to action is clear: focus less on the hype, and more on the systems, safety, and trust that make tech transformative. Whether you're a legal technologist, innovator, or cautious observer, this episode offers a grounded and inspiring look at what it takes to build legal tech that actually works.Listen on mobile platforms: Apple Podcasts | Spotify | YouTubeSpecial Thanks to Legal Technology Hub for their sponsoring this episode. In this episode, host Tyson has a conversation with Dr. Cain Elliott, the Chief Legal Futurist at Filevine, about the evolving landscape of legal technology. Dr. Elliott discusses his role in developing innovative legal tools, emphasizing the importance of historical trends and user feedback in shaping future advancements. As technology develops, the legal space can lean on it to create better processes and ways of working. Dr. Elliott shares some insight on how to develop legal tools while meeting client demands. It is important to understand what you want out of a legal tool. Are you looking for a tool that fits within a specific infrastructure? Do you want a tool that creates a better flow for communication or client intake? This has to be understood from both the firm and the technology company that is helping design or manage a tool.Dr. Elliott delves into the importance of those in the technology space to think about what can be done to raise standards or help outcomes. For most law firms, this is what legal tools and technology are used for. There might be conflicts within firms or even between a firm and a company as ideas are flowing or tools are being created.
