Live from Pawnee: A Parks and Recreation Fan Rewatch Podcast

This week Mark and Allen break down the Episode where Ben has his first day as Pawnee City Manager! As Leslie returns to her position as Deputy Director of Parks and Rec on a full-time basis, she expects everything to be the same as it was when she left. However, she instead sees many differences: April is handling Animal Control with ease, and Tom's firing on all cylinders in his new role of Business Liaison. Tom mentions his project to enlist a juice company to run a lemonade stand in one of Pawnee's parks to replace a retiring hot stew chef, and states he will be pitching the idea to the Pawnee Small Business Coalition. While somewhat impressed with Tom's initiative, Leslie is NOT impressed with Tom's decision to do things HIS way, instead of following her presentation guidelines that have been a Parks Department staple for 10 years. Worried Tom will fail in his presentation, Leslie decides to convince the hot stew chef to NOT go into retirement, deciding to represent him, and ultimately planning to go head-to-head with Tom in front of the Small Business Coalition. Meanwhile, Ben has an open house on his first day as Pawnee City Manager. He attempts to show everyone (particularly April, Andy, and Donna) that he is very cool, calm, and laid back. However, he ALSO implements a number of new rules to assert his position as a no-nonsense boss. Sensing Ben is wound very tight, the trio decide to prank him with a false arrest to "lighten him up". Two Pawnee police officers end up escorting a terrified Ben down to the station, trumping up ridiculous charges the whole way, until Ben thinks he'll never see the light of day again ... until April, Andy, and Donna come to the police station and reveal the prank. Even though the trio thinks it's hilarious, Ben is NOT amused. Finally, in the middle of taking pictures around City Hall to show their unborn baby where they met, Chris and Ann consider their situation and their plans for the future, and spontaneously decide they should get married. They head to a jewelry store in Pawnee, where they begin shopping for an engagement ring. Listening to another engaged couple also shopping there, they realize how much forethought is typically put into something like this, and start to question not only whether or not they want to buy the ring, but whether or not they want to get married. As always, we tackle the tough questions, such as ... Can Tom get his lemonade stand idea going? Did Ben pee his pants at the police station? Will Ann and Chris decide to get married? What will happen to the hot stew stand? Will Ben try to do anything in retaliation? What will Ann and Chris buy at the jewelry store? Will Leslie be able to get back into the rhythm of things? Did Andy like the illegal french cheese? Will Jerry die of cracker-dust inhalation? Loyal viewers, Mark and Allen are really on their game during this episode - tune in and enjoy! This week I had the pleasure of interviewing Mark Berry who is my friend and personal trainer. We've known each other for years and every time I have a session with him, we end up deep in conversation and he is a real fountain of wisdom and life advice, as well as a great trainer.Growing up on a council estate in Wandsworth, Mark has always been committed to helping others (alongside his love of sport, mainly football). He started back in the 1990s doing care work in a residential care home. Along the way he's picked up a lot of knowledge working alongside physiotherapists, he trained as a personal trainer, gym instructor and aerobic instructor and has worked at One Trust for 32 years as a care worker for people with learning disabilities and complex and challenging needs. We know each other from his ‘side hustle' as a personal trainer in my local gym. His philosophy of training is that it is for everyone. ‘If someone wants to, we'll find a way' is what he says of this - he's all about ‘yes we can, not no we can't.'To mix things up, we recorded this from the gym, to give listeners a flavour of our relationship and the sort of conversations we have (in between rounds of boxing) - the sound quality is a little compromised but hopefully you can still enjoy Mark's wise words. In this episode we talk about the importance of taking time out, remaining calm and being patient. Mark opens up about his realisations of his self-worth and how he uses this learning to support and lift up others. We talk about training, how it's good to challenge yourself, and about the limitations put on us particularly in childhood by our upbringing, schooling, medical diagnoses, and we discuss how important it is to question and challenge these. As you can hear from the episode, people come in and out and its a true reflection of Mark's character and how friendly he is. I know, for me, my sessions with him provide me with mental health support as much as physical, and we talk about this, particularly for men, and how the gym can provide a safe space for men to talk and get things off their chests, under non-intimidating circumstances. You can follow Mark or Sophie on Instagram.

Back in the early ‘80s, Brooklynite Alisha Ann Itkin was pretty much your average American teenager. Outgoing yet a bit timid onstage, she shined as a cheerleader, and scored roles in school plays and functions. Oh, and she was also an outstanding vocalist who began training at the age of 8 with the support of her parents, Lillian and Al.As fate would have it, a demo of hers recorded with a rock band called The Babysitters landed in the lap of then Vanguard Records engineer and producer, Mark Berry, already established with his work on landmark records such as Carly Simon's “You're So Vain,” and Man Parrish's “Hip Hop (Be Bop)”.Berry chose Alisha to lay vocals on a track written by Rick Tarbox, featuring lyrics that seemed somewhat racy for a girl her age. Alisha's performance, however, embodied feelings of desire to full effect, coupled by an extravagant reverb-filled production that signaled a new era in Dance music.Recorded in the summer of 1983, and released in early 1984, “All Night Passion” was played in virtually every club in New York City, crossing the Atlantic with ease. Four decades later, it still withstands the test of time as one of the era's best freestyle jams.Show TracklistingCabaret (Alisha - Extract from "Alisha - The Rise of an '80s Icon" documentary)If You Read My Mind Demo (Alisha - Extract from "Alisha - The Rise of an '80s Icon" documentary)You're So Vain (Carly Simon)Hip Hop (Be Bop) (Man Parrish)All Night Passion - Album Version (Alisha)All Night Passion - Extended Remix (Alisha)(You Wanna Be A) Superstar (Alisha)Host and Producer: Diego MartinezExecutive Producer: Nicholas "NickFresh" PuzoAudio Engineer: Adam Fogel Follow us on social media: @choonspod

Let's face it, this time period has been hard! Many businesses have closed, many people have lost jobs, many people have gotten extremely sick, and we are all stressed.  This heightened stress has impacted how we communicate with each other, especially given the lack of in-person communication. We are now dependent upon virtual means from the asynchronous technology like email, testing, and social media; and the synchronous technologies like ZOOM, Teams, phone calls, etc. Distance has been put between business relationships and distance has created more tension on an already tense time period.  This podcast episode is dedicated to this discussion. Bobby Rettew and Mark Berry talk about how they are managing their own stress, communication with their partners and client, along with their complete focus of making sure everything we deliver is beyond expectations.

We are reviewing the Rode SC6-L Mobile Interview Kit. This is an exciting new, portable interview kit equipped with two lavaliere microphones that can be used with your iPhone lighting connection.  This episode focuses how this technology can support the healthcare marketer capturing quality audio while using very portable equipment for interviews inside a hospital or healthcare system. It also discusses how these devices make content collection easier along with strategies to maintain social distancing.  From the manufacturer: Bundled together for the convenience of iOS users, the Rode SC6-L Mobile Interview Kit includes the SC6-L Mobile Interface, two smartLav+ lapel microphones, and accessories such as storage pouches, mic clips, and windshields. The SC6-L interface facilitates the recording of 24-bit / 48 kHz broadcast-quality audio, giving you two TRRS inputs for the microphones, a 3.5mm headphone jack, and a lightning connector for your iOS device. The microphones record two interview subjects at a time, and the accessories allow you to affix the mics, fight against vocal plosives, and store the mics for later use. Mark Berry started flying as a teenager, and attended Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University, earning all of his General Aviation (GA) ratings by the time he graduated. Following graduation, he paid his dues in GA, and passed his Airline Transport Pilot written exam and Practical Test (check ride), but couldn't receive his ATP rating until he turned 23 years old. Flying Tigers Airline wanted to offer him employment, but couldn't hire him without an ATP. While he was waiting to "age" into his rating, he was hired by Trans World Airlines. His life was on track to a fantastic career, and he was engaged to his soul-mate, Suzanne. Suzanne was traveling to Rome on business, seated in First Class of TWA Flight 800. When Flight 800 crashed, Mark's world fell apart. Every day he went to work he saw aircraft in his airline's livery that were identical to the plane that carried Suzanne to her death. Mark had to take time off, and had to find a way to deal with his loss. In the long process of healing, Mark wrote two novels that explored survivor guilt. But he didn't deal with his own issues until, after much urging from family and publisher, he wrote his memoir, 13,700 Feet - My Personal Hole In The Sky. Mark eventually recovered, and returned to airline flying. When TWA went out of business, he ended up at another airline, and is now a Captain.

SINGER | SONGWRITER - This week our guest is DANIEL GRAY. Daniel is a singer/songwriter. As a former New Orleans resident, Daniel had to relocate during the destruction of Hurricane Katrina. He watched as everything was destroyed. But not even the harsh winds or pouring rain could take away his love and talent for music. Daniel used this event in his life as a source of inspiration to begin working on his first album titled "Invictus," which in Latin means "Unconquerable." His new album is categorized in the genre of Dance/Pop and it was produced by multi-platinum producer and engineer, Mark Berry. It is a combination of high energy and thought-provoking ballads. His song "Cast Away," is a reflection of the emotion and sorrow New Orleans residents experienced with Hurricane Katrina.
