What makes the 800-meter race one of the most challenging and intriguing events in track and field? Tom Brumlik, the driving force behind the coaching of 800-meter athletes for Under Armour's Mission Run Team, has the answers to this question. Alongside host Brad Miles, they discuss the complexities of coaching this event, explore the philosophies behind Tom's approach and the strategies he has implemented to enhance his athletes' performances. From his initial days coaching at the high school level to playing a significant role at American University under Coach Matt Centrowitz, Tom shares his journey and the founding of the District Track Club. He acknowledges the impact that mentors like Matt Centrowitz and Drew Mearns have had on his career, shaping his views on coaching and athlete development. Tom's coaching ethos–rooted in a passion for competition and helping athletes achieve their highest potential–truly shines through when he discusses coaching the 800-meter. Detailing a week in his training program, he reveals the delicate balance between aerobic base building, endurance work, sprint sessions, and essential recovery periods. A key component in this regimen is the Lever Movement system that enabled his athletes to increase their training volume without the wear and tear. This is exemplified by the improvements in both aerobic capacity and race times of one of his athletes. Quotes "I've always just been attracted to the complexity of the event, the amount of difference, the amount of different skills and knowledge that you have to have to understand the event. Cause again, you gotta be a sprint coach and you have to be a distance coach." (22:13 | Tom Brumlik) "We found a lot of good success in getting athletes to be able to get a lot of volume on those Monday base work days with the lever." (25:34 | Tom Brumlik) "If you're not aerobically fit, you're not going to put together a good 800.” (39:10 | Tom Brumlik) "In general, our athletes have developed a lot aerobically because of utilizing the lever and we have eight athletes right now. A couple of them are due to the program. But with that group specifically, we've just been able to get in a lot of really, really high-level aerobic work, keep it in the right parameters, make sure it's truly something that's going to help you develop aerobically.” (39:26 | Tom Brumlik) Links Connect with Tom Brumlik: https://www.instagram.com/missionrun_balt800/ https://twitter.com/TH_Brumlik https://www.instagram.com/levermovement/ https://www.instagram.com/bradmiles/ https://levermovement.com/ Podcast production and show notes provided by HiveCast.fm

“Especially this year, what I want to do is be better than last year. I feel like my mentality in the fall and winter was to run better than I did last year. Even though maybe I didn't have the position results I wanted, I PR'ed in every single event. I've accomplished those goals and now for the outdoor season, I just want to win races and be one of the best in the world.” Mario Garcia Romo is a professional middle-distance runner representing Spain and the On Athletics Club. Last year was a massive season for him. He won the NCAA indoor mile title with Ole Miss and then has a disappointing showing at the NCAA Outdoor Championships but many people forgot about it when he ended up winning the Spanish 1500m title and then finished fourth at the World Championships in the 1500m in 3:30.20. It was a big personal best and he moved from seventh to fourth in the final 100 meters. He missed that bronze medal by just three-hundredths of a second. He went on to earn a bronze medal at the European Championships before fully joining the OAC in Boulder in the fall. This past indoor season, he broke the Spanish indoor mile record in 3:51.79 at the Millrose Games. In this conversation, you'll hear about his goals for the upcoming outdoor season to try and improve upon last year, being a student of the sport watching Matt Centrowitz videos to become a master tactician, his roots in Spain and much more. As Andre Williams saw it, there were only two options for men in his family - join the military or become a drug dealer on the streets of his hometown Richmond, Virginia. But sports presented another option – basketball was his first choice – and he wanted to use cross country as conditioning for it. However, he quickly fell in love with his newly adopted sport and showed promise: skyrocketing into national prominence, winning the Virginia State cross country title, setting the course record, and winning the Kinney southeast region cross country championships. This rising star earned a trip on his first-ever flight to San Diego for the National Championships, where he finished 19th—earning All-American honors. He received an athletic scholarship to the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill – where he initially struggled academically due to gaps in his earlier education. But Andre began absorbing information - a habit that was reinforced by his daily newspaper reading. This daily literary habit transferred into a curiosity that he maintains to this day. During his collegiate career, he earned All-American honors, was a three-time ACC conference champion, and was team Captain of the two-time ACC Champion Tar Heels track teams. Feeling he had more to give in his sport, he accepted an invitation to join the prestigious Enclave Track Club, a professional running club sponsored by Reebok. After two years of hard work, countless grueling high mileage days and intense track workouts, and finally watching his teammates board their flight to the 1996 Olympic Trials---he considered hanging up his spikes. Andre's coach, former American Record holder Matt Centrowitz urged him to stick with it for one more year. This paid huge dividends; he committed to staying the course and adopted a strength regimen to stabilize his trunk imbalances and began placing more emphasis on flexibility, recovery, and rest. This hard-working warrior from river city was ranked in the top ten in the country from 1997-2001 in the 5,000-meter run, with a personal best of 13:28*. Today this tireless life learner has risen to the top of his field in Information Technology and Mobility for the AT & T corporation. We warmly welcome my longtime friend Andre to this episode of Intrinsic Drive™. *PBST (Pre-Bionic/Boingo Shoe Time)
Devon Allen is a US champion and two-time Olympian in the 110m hurdles (5th in Rio 2016, 4th in Tokyo 2020) with his sights set on Gold in Paris 2024. Not only is Devon world-class in track & field, he was also a leading football wide receiver during his time at University of Oregon. We ask Devon about balancing football and track while at UO and why he ultimately went pro in track over football. We also get into party stories from his time in college and at the Olympics, such as his epic beer pong game at Rio 2016, partying with Usain Bolt, and whether football players or distance runners go the hardest. Devon is down to give the beer mile a go, so you better believe we are gonna hold him to that and get something organized in 2022. Gordon and Kevin react to Matt Centrowitz's AR mile attempt and breakdown every women's running event at the 2021 Olympic Games.
We have one cool cat on the show today and one of the best middle distance runners in the United States and the World. Craig Engels is only 26 years old, but already has an impressive resume as a world-class middle distance runner. He is the 2019 USATF 1500m National Champion in a race where battled the reigning Olympic Gold Medalist, Matt Centrowitz, to the line winning by .04 seconds. He went on to make the IAAF World Championship final that year in the 1500m, where he finished 10th, just .20 seconds off his personal best of 3:34.04. Craig started off 2019 with another USATF title in the mile at the USATF Indoor Championships. Another major highlight of his professional career includes a 7th place finish at the World Indoor Championships in the 1500m in 2018. He also has a personal best of 1:44.68 in the 800m. Craig is coached by Pete Julian and runs for Nike. Mr. Engels attended Ole Miss for a majority of his collegiate career after transferring from North Carolina State University. At Ole Miss, he was a multiple-time NCAA All-American, the first SEC Champion in the 1500m from Ole Miss, and the school-record holder in the 1500m. His senior season he finished 7th at the NCAA Championships in the 1500m, but just a few weeks later at the 2016 Olympic Trials he burst onto the national scene placing 4th in the 800m and 5th in the 1500m, nearly making the Olympic team. He was born and raised in North Carolina and attended Ronald W. Reagan High School in Pfafftown. He set school records in the 800m, mile, and 3200m and also won the best hair award at his high school. Craig's reputation as being cooler than the other side of the pillow held up in this pod. We hope you all enjoy it as much as we did recording it. Thanks Craig! Keira D’Amato is a world class runner who broke the American record in the 10 mile and clocked an incredible 2:22 at the Marathon Project this past December, but incredibly, she’s a full-time realtor and running is her side gig. Keira, an unsponsored Realtor and mom of two from Virginia, unexpectedly placed 15th at the Olympic Marathon Trials last February, emerging onto the American running radar after a comeback mission that spanned over a decade. Keira was a rising star at D1 American University, even beating future Olympians Molly Huddle and Amy Cragg. Then an ankle injury and subsequent surgery seemingly ended her running career for good. Switching gears, Keira started working at her mom’s real estate company, started a family, and called herself a “hobby jogger.” She started training hard again to fulfill her life-long dream of becoming an Olympian, continuing to get faster and faster even as the pandemic shut down the world and Tokyo postponed the Olympics. In 2020, Keira got an unofficial Olympic standard in the 5K, ran a blisteringly fast 4:33 mile, and in November, Keira became the fastest American woman in the 10 mile. To cap off the year, Keira clocked a truly world-class time of 2:22 at the Marathon Project last December, coming in second place behind Sara Hall, a 12-minute improvement over her time at the trials. As remarkable as all that is, running is still a hobby for Keira. She remains a professional realtor, not a professional runner. She talks to Coach Claire about running at an elite level while being a full-time realtor and mom, what 2020 was like for her, including the Marathon Project and her PRs, and how she trains for both speed and distance. As a bonus, this fun and inspiring episode even includes some corny mom jokes! Enjoy! Questions Keira is asked: 4:14 What an amazing year 2020 turned out for you in running! After what you call a decade of "hobby jogging" you have emerged as one of the best American distance runners, breaking the American record in the 10 mile and clocking an incredible 2:22 at the Marathon Project in December. Can you talk about what last year was like for you? 5:43 It’s easy to think that you just came out of nowhere, but you ran Division I in college, you were coached by Matt Centrowitz, even beating out a few future Olympians in races back then. What were your plans for your running career back then? 7:06 I imagine it must be such a mind shift to think, “Okay, my life is headed in a certain direction,” and you get injured. “Well, my life is not going in that direction.” And then to get a second chance. Not many people get a second chance like you got. 9:39 You have become one of the distance moms. The field of American female distance runners right now is so deep, and most of them are moms which would be unheard of not that long ago. How do you feel that motherhood has intertwined with your running? Do you think there’s something to do with it that makes you a better runner? 11:34 When your kids were younger, did you do the running stroller thing? 12:46 Let’s talk about the Marathon Project last month. You had a massive PR and came in second place. What about your training said that “Hey, I can do this. I can get a sub-2:30. I can get close to 2:20.” What kind of workouts, what kind of things were going on in your mind that told you, “Yeah, I’m a contender?” 14:22 Did you have any thoughts of running out with Sara Hall and going for the American record at the time? 15:13 Not only did you kill it in the marathon but you got a new 5K PR and a mile PR this year. How does training for those shorter distances, or at least testing yourself at those shorter distances, how does that relate to your marathon, and what would you say to that 20-yr-old girl that you used to be that you’re pretty much beating all the time now? 17:57 Would your advice to somebody who is let’s say plateauing in the marathon be to do track work? What would be your number one tip to get a breakthrough like you had? 18:45 Speaking of your training, you are on Strava and your Strava feed is like a corny mom’s joke, so I would love to hear what’s your favorite corny mom joke? 20:16 We have something else in common besides running. You are a realtor. I’ve been a realtor for almost 19 years now so I can relate to that. You still work full time as a realtor and you’re not sponsored as a pro runner. Tell me about that. 22:35 That’s a great point. You think, “Oh, you’re an elite runner, you should just get signed and have running, running, running all over your life,” but the fact that you can be riskier because you have real estate as your income source, running isn’t about money for you. 23:58 I read somewhere that you do real estate negotiations while you’re on a run, on an easy run. 25:06 You said multiple times in this conversation that you are going to be an Olympian, so what’s next for you? 25:29 You’ve hit the Olympic standard in the 5K, right, but it was unofficial? Is that correct? Questions I ask everyone: 26:30 If you could go back and talk to yourself when you started running, what advice would you give? 27:41 What is the greatest gift running has given you? 28:27 Where can listeners connect with you? Quotes by Keira: “I think through all the chaos, and all the hurt, and pain, and just everything that happened in the negative space in 2020, I really clung to running to be my hope, to be my good time, to be my goals.” “It’s important to keep the mileage up and to make sure you’re getting your long runs and your tempo runs too, but I think just developing your speed. Like when I first did a marathon, I think that was like my 5K pace too, and then I’ve been able to drag my 5K pace down so much that now I feel really comfortable running marathon pace, so I think that that’s the key.” “I live, I train, everything about me is elite athlete. If you look at my life, I have a very similar structured life to the elite athletes but just instead of taking as many naps or having some downtime and going on Netflix binges, I’m doing my real job.” Take a Listen on Your Next Run Want more awesome interviews and advice? Us distance runners are used to metering out our effort, cautiously sipping fuel to conserve energy, and waiting for the perfect moment to strike. We're creatures of patience, willing to grind for miles and execute a well-planned pacing strategy over the course of a race. But none of that happens in the 800m. In the half mile - possibly the "perfect" middle distance event - caution and patience are liabilities. Sipping fuel would be competitive suicide; blasting the after-burners is the only way to race it. And such a fast, aggressive race demands training that's very different from what distance runners are used to. In fact, 800m training looks like a blend of sprint and distance work: long runs and speed training, traditional track workouts with more strides, drills, and top-end speed reps. During my track days, I certainly didn't do any 800m training. But I raced a lot of 800's in a few situations: As a second race during a track meet (the 1500m / 800m double is particularly taxing) At the end of a season if you haven't qualified for the championship meets During a 4x800m relay (putting four distance runners in a relay and watching them struggle with a mid-distance race is especially hilarious) And while I'm firmly a distance runner (and distance coach), I love the 800m race. It's a beautiful expression of speed. So I brought a middle-distance coach on the podcast to discuss this distance, 800m training, and how adult runners can get started with shorter, faster races. Please welcome Tom Brumlik to the Strength Running Podcast (this is an excerpt from Team Strength Running). Tom is an 800m specialist coach for the District Track Club in Washington, DC. He used to hold the General Manager role as well but is now working exclusively in a coaching capacity. The DTC was started (and is still directed) by Matt Centrowitz, Sr. (father to Olympic Gold Medalist Matt Centrowitz) and features a range of elite middle distance runners. Tom is on the podcast today to discuss how an elite running club like the DTC works (its funding, how it recruits members, and its origin) and the intricacies of 800m training. He'll be answering questions like: What kind of mileage levels do 800m runners run? How long do these mid-distance runners go for their long runs? What speed development workouts are required for 800m training? Do runners from sprint or endurance backgrounds fair better in the 800? We also discuss how to find all-comers track meets (there needs to be more of these!) so you can test yourself at the 800m distance.

Alan Webb, the American record holder in the mile, joins the CITIUS MAG Podcast to take a trip down memory lane and catch up on what he's up to nowadays. Webb retired from track in 2014 and then made a run for the 2016 Olympics in the triathlon. The triathlon chapter did not pan out as planned and he now owns a truck repair business in Oregon. "For me, I started to kind of take on a different mentality," Webb says. "I started to enjoy watching others be in that moment. You kind of know when someone is building that momentum and seeing it...You just have a genuine appreciation of someone going through something you felt...It changed for me and that's when I started to know that it was time to step away." "It became hard to genuinely give it everything I had," Webb adds. "I couldn't dig down deep like I used to. That's when I was like 'You're not digging!' It was hard. It was honestly hard mentally to dig down deep. I wasn't what I would recommend to someone else. If I was coaching I wouldn't want them to do what I was doing...I would give up sometimes. That was hard. Knowing I was doing that." We delve into the magic of that 2007 season and what the impact was of that 3:46.91 at a tiny meet in in Brasschaat, Belgium. We did start to think about how long does he think the record will stand. The closest someone has come is 3:50.53 by Matt Centrowitz in May 2014 and that’s still 4 seconds off. Among the questions explored: What was it like stepping off the track at the Millrose Games and retiring at 31 years old? Does he believe in the idea that runners who thrive so early in their careers simply can’t maintain that peak? We get the full rundown on Webb's weight room training including how much he would bench before his races and what his routine was. What's the deepest that he's ever had to dig for a race? As he begins his coaching career soon, what coach from his career does he think he may resonate the most with? He was coached by Scott Raczko, Alberto Salazar, Ron Warhurst, Jason Vigilante, Jerry Schumacher and Jon Marcus in his career. Whose career would you rather have: Webb's, Ryan Hall's, or Dathan Ritzenhein's? Can Webb make the case for why they should pick him? Or does he have a different opinion? We take a few listener questions and more. ------- This episode was brought to you by Maurten. Coogan's, America's most iconic track and field bar, is set to shutter its doors in May due to exorbitant rent increases in the Washington Heights neighborhood of New York City. Jojo is joined by Kevin Sully, the newest member of the FloTrack content team, to interview co-owner Peter Walsh about plans to save the bar, excitement for one final blow-out Millrose Games after-party, what they're going to do with all of the track and field memorabilia that covers the walls, and how a dying bar in a working-class neighborhood is perhaps analogous to the status of track in the greater sports world. We also discuss which dessert on the menu is most popular - the Carl Lewis or the Matt Centrowitz, the Alan Webb or the Drew Hunter?
We kick off 2018 on the CITIUS MAG Podcast by chatting at length with two-time Olympian and three-time NCAA champion Andrew Wheating. He announced his retirement from professional running on Thursday afternoon with a letter to professional running. We caught up on Friday morning for a long conversation looking back at his career and what comes next for him. We discuss Wheating's magical 2010 season, where he ran 3:30.90 at the Monaco Diamond League. (There's some good first-person recounting of that race.) The time now ranks as the fifth-fastest by an American of all-time. But we take a look at some of the runners that have run that fast and what happened afterward in their career. Running 3:30 is no joke but does it take a toll on the future? "I remember telling a friend of mine to respect what you've run because it may not happen again," Wheating says. "To take it for granted, you can really miss out on opportunity. Keep that open-minded spirit. 3:30 is not something to joke about and I kept thinking 'Eh, it can be something that I can do forever.' Once you turn it into that, it starts to get a little harder and disappointment starts to creep in. I'm not quite sure why it never happened again. These things just happen. It's just a day I'll never forget." Of course we discuss the NCAA 1,500 meter sweep and the 2008 U.S. Olympic Trials. We'll break out a few more quotes from Wheating in the coming days but that was one that really stood out. Among the other topics discussed on the podcast: - Wheating's relationship with Vin Lannana and how it changed over time - What it's like for him to re-watch the 2008 U.S. Olympic Trials 800m race and what he prefers instead - An attempt to fake a rivalry between him and Matt Centrowitz - The hardest workout that he's ever run before that 3:30 in Monaco - Kobe Bryant at the 2008 Olympic Opening Ceremonies - The pressure that comes with a big contract - Wheating does race commentary on a hypthetical all-time U.S. 1,500m race between him, Matt Centrowitz, Bernard Lagat, Alan Webb, Sydney Maree and Leo Manzano. - His Mt. Rushmore of Oregon distance runners Wheating also takes questions from the listeners including a campaign for us to bring back puka shell necklaces. All that and more on the latest episode of The CITIUS MAG Podcast. ------- ------ This episode was brought to you by Maurten.
