"We'll see what happens. We'll all find out on Sunday.” A brief chat with Keira D'Amato, Emma Bates and Sara Hall before the 2024 Chicago Marathon. Unfortunately did not have the time to catch Betsy Saina. From our race preview on CITIUSMAG.com: The American showdown may become a chase for Emily Sisson's American record, as three of the five fastest women in U.S. history will be on the start line alongside 2021 Chicago runner-up Emma Bates, Chavez's pick to take down the record. Keira D'Amato, who held this record for just under nine months in 2022, will be racing 26.2 miles for the first time since moving to Utah to train with coach Ed Eyestone. We won't know until Sunday exactly what her and Eyestone's race plan looks like, but don't be surprised if she's in the mix for the top American crown. 2024 U.S. leader Betsy Saina, whose fifth-place finish in Tokyo in 2:19:17 was a huge leap forward, figures to be a prominent player as well. 2016 Olympic 1500m champion Matthew Centrowitz is set to be pacing this pack as they go after 2:18:29, so that will be something to keep an eye on even if the leaders are well ahead.

Hayward Field. Pre's Trail. The birthplace of Nike. From Bill Dellinger to Galen Rupp. And Andrew Wheating to Matthew Centrowitz. The men of the University of Oregon have a rich tradition, perhaps greater than any other team in the country. Current mid-distance star Elliott Cook is a fitting torch bearer for the Duck legacy. Originally from Dublin, Ohio, Elliott moved to the Pacific Northwest for school, and has punctuated his career so far with recent Pac 12 championships in the 800 and 1500 meters. He'll chase Oregon immortality this week at the NCAA Championships. And he'll do so on his home track with joy, a thoughtful approach, and immense reverence for his storied program. Elliott is our third guest in our series chronicling the journeys of local stars on their way to the upcoming Eugene Olympic Trials. Questions, comments, or show ideas? At 20 years old, Cole Hocker has put himself atop the United States middle distance scene. I profiled him for Sports Illustrated last July after he outkicked reigning Olympic champion Matthew Centrowitz for the win in the men's 1,500 meter final at the U.S. Olympic Trials – which was one of my favorite races to watch of the whole trials. Hocker's finishing speed is world-class. He went on to run 3:31.40 for sixth place in the Olympic 1,500 meter final. In September, he signed a professional contract with Nike and now sets his sights on his first professional indoor season, which includes headlining the men's 3,000 meters at the Millrose Games. In this episode, we discuss his plans for the new year, the decision to turn professional after just one full NCAA campaign at Oregon, thoughts on American records and much more. Chris, Kyle and Dana recap Day 7 of track and field at the Olympics which was highlighted by Katie Nageotte's gold medal in the women's pole vault, where she became just the third woman to win gold in the event at the Games. This was a true moment of redemption as she missed the 2016 Olympics, switched coaches and took a leap of faith to continue within the sport. She gets the Magical Performance of the Day honors. The men's 400 meter final was not as delightful for U.S. fans as Michael Cherry ran a personal best for fourth place and Michael Norman took fifth but Team USA was shut out of the medals for just the third time in history. We beg the question: Is the United States (particularly the men) having a bad Olympics and what's the possible cause. Also discussed in this episode: – If you're Damian Warner and you finally win gold in the decathlon after three Olympic cycles, do you keep going? – We still need a healthy and full-on KJT vs. Thiam heptathlon rivalry – Cole Hocker looked really good in the men's semifinals of the 1,500 meters; Reigning Olympic champion Matthew Centrowitz gets eliminated – Gutsiest performance of the day: Nick Willis runs his fastest time in four years in the semifinals of his fifth Olympics at 38 years old – A brief women's marathon preview + Much More TUNE IN AND LISTEN TO TORCH TALK WITH CHRIS, KYLE AND DANA. For the final episode of Trials Talk with Chris and Kyle, we dissect the wildest hour of track and field on U.S. soil in a while. In the men's 5,000m, Paul Chelimo toyed with the field and won a scorcher of a race in 13:26 ahead of Woody Kincaid and Grant FIsher. We had a bit of a weather delay where the meet was postponed due to extreme and record-setting heat. We had a world record in the women's 400m hurdles where Sydney McLaughlin took .26 seconds off Dalilah Muhammad's previous mark. Athing Mu did her thing with the second-fastest U.S. women's 800m mark of all-time to win the women's 800m over a loaded field. Ajee Wilson and Raevyn Rogers snuck in behind her for the other two spots to Tokyo. As if anything could follow those up, we saw one of the best 1,500 meter duels in recent history with Cole Hocker defeating the reigning Olympic champion Matthew Centrowitz. Noah Lyles closed out the show with a world-leading time in the men's 200m of 19.74. TUNE IN AND LISTEN TO TRIALS TALK WITH CHRIS AND KYLE. This week we devote the entire show to talking to Jim Ryun - the athlete that the LetsRun.com visitors recently voted as the Greatest American Distance Runner of All-Time. During our talk, Ryun talks about his entire career, during which he ran sub-4 and made the Olympics in high school before being named Sports Illustrated Sportsman of the Year during his freshman year of college as he broke the mile WR and met his future wife on the same day. Along the way we of course talk about the 1968 and 1972 Olympics. In 1968, Jim snagged the silver and we point out that if you convert his time for altitude, he ran the equivalent of 3:29 for 1500 in the process according to the NCAA. We also talk about current track and field stars and Jim talks about the relationship he's had with Alan Webb and Matthew Centrowitz. Details appear in the show notes below. The podcast is sponsored by TheFeed.com. They've got everything you need to perform at your best and try and stay healthy. LetsRun.com co-founder Weldon Johnson just got his goody back and is pumped. Show Notes: Start: Intro and then Jim reacts to being named the Greatest American Distance Runner of All-Time by LetsRun.com and talks about making the Olympics at age 17. 4:58 Jim talks about how he found running after being cut from the church baseball team and how he ran 100-mile weeks in HS. 9:15 We talk about Jim's 3:51.1 mile WR and wonder what it would have been on a modern synthetic track. Jim says it felt like one of the "easiest races of his life." 11:57 The talk turns to Ryun's training under Bob Timmons which included 4 workouts per week 15:20 The talk turns to running sub-4 miles in HS and Ryun talks about how after just his 4th HS race coach Timmons told him he thought he could be first US HS to break 4:00. 23:40 Jim talks about the one time he lost a high school track race 26:23 Jim talks about how he almost went to Oregon State. 31:25 Jim talks about how when he was in college freshman weren't allowed to compete in the NCAA but he still managed to be named Sports Illustrated Sportsman of the Year that year and how on the same day he set the WR in the mile, he met his future wife, only he didn't know it at the time. 34:43 Jim talks about the 1968 Olympics in Mexico City. He calls the decision to hold it at altitude was a mistake but says his silver medal run was one of his best runs ever. We point out that according to the NCAA he ran the equivalent of a 3:29 1500. 45:13 More 1968 talk as we ask Jim about how much his training was limited by Mono that year. 50:08 Jim talks about how he wanted to redshirt in 1969 but coach Timmons didn't let him. 56:17 Jim talks about the 1972 Olympics - a race Seb Coe thinks he would have won had he not been tripped 64:35 Does Jim still watch track and field these days? THE PRICE OF A MILE IS BACK. Moh Ahmed, Lopez Lomong and I sat down before the Portland 5,000 that took place at the Nike campus on Sept. 11. We were paced by Moh for a majority of the race before I finished in 12:58.10. Lopez ran 13:00.13 and Matthew Centrowitz ran 13:00.39. We all dipped under the 2020 Olympic standard of 13:13.50. This is sort of an audio diary about how we felt before that race, how we felt coming out of the training camp, gambling in the sport, their expectations for the world championships in Doha. These are just some of the thoughts before one of the greatest moments of our lives. Definitely mine. So this is a really special podcast for me. Oh...We also talk about the social media beef with Paul Chelimo. ▶ Follow us: twitter.com/CitiusMag instagram.com/citiusmag facebook.com/citiusmag ✩ Connect with Woody twitter.com/KincaidWoody twitter.com/POAMpod instagram.com/priceofamile

David Ribich joins the CITIUS MAG Podcast after wrapping up his NCAA career at Western Oregon, where he won back-to-back NCAA Division II Outdoor 1,500 meter titles. He also helped his Western Oregon squad win back-to-back DMR titles during the NCAA Division II Indoor Championship. Ribich plans to turn professional by signing a contract in the coming weeks ahead of the U.S. Outdoor Track and Field Championships in Des Moines. How did he get here? In this week's podcast we look at the leading Irish results from last weekend, before delving into our topic of discussion for this episode: the problem with potential and athlete development. We then go international to the Prefontaine Classic (31:30 into the podcast) with interviews with Matthew Centrowitz, Christian Coleman and Shelby Houlihan. This was the last time the event will be held in the original Hayward Field before it's demolished and rebuilt. Is it really that 'HISTORIC'? 'Centro' reflects on the Asbel Kiprop doping situation along with his favourite memories from Hayward Field. Coleman talks about his hiccups since winning the world indoors while Houlihan talks about her big breakthrough and the gold dust of the Jerry Schumacher/Bowerman Track Club regime. There were plenty of good performances from Irish athletes at home and abroad. Phil Healy was one of the headliners at the AAI Games while the juniors grabbed attention at the IFAM meeting in Oordegem - The women's U20 4x100m relay team set a new national record and Sarah Healy broke the youth 1500m record. This leads into our discussion on potential. Do we keep going back to the source when a talent hits a roadblock? Should we look at athletic scouts and identify those for the long game. It becomes a merry-go-round instead of developing what we have, which would create a consistent path for the next generation. Alternatively we keep going back to the 'talent.'
