Do you remember "Presidential Physical Fitness” testing from youth? Can you name all 6 of the “classic” tests it included? Fun fact: (according to a Feb. 2024 NYT article) Born of Cold War-era fears that America was becoming “soft,” the test was first introduced by President Lyndon Johnson in 1966.  The goal was to improve the fitness of the nation's youth for military service. The original test also included a softball throw, which mimicked throwing a grenade So if you don't have antiquated mid-century calisthenics metrics to tell you if you're fit/athletic, what can you use? How can you know if you're WINNING AT FITNESS?? What's an average human to do? Your Doctor Friends came across NYT article titled “This Test Might Be the Best Way to Track Fitness and Longevity” which focused on V02 max. The article presents the pros and cons of using V02 max as a valid, objective measure of cardiopulmonary fitness. Your Doctor Friends decided to reach out to our Exercise Physiology MASTER EXPERT, to break it down for y'all! Welcome, Philip Skiba, DO! Dr. Skiba is the outgoing Director of Sports Medicine/Fellowship Director for Advocate Health - Chicago, where he served for 12 years Dr. Skiba founded the Advocate Human Performance and Biomechanics Laboratories, helping amateur, elite and professional athletes explore their limits using state-of-the-art technology. Dr. Skiba was recently recruited to a professorship at Thomas Jefferson University Medical School in Philadelphia, where he will serve as Medical Director of Sports Medicine/Fellowship Director. Dr. Skiba serves on the medical boards of both USA Triathlon and USA Cycling and accompanied Team USA to the World Championships in Australia.  Unusual for a physician, he has also personally coached dozens of world-class athletes. Most notably, he was hired by Nike for the Breaking 2 project and helped train the fastest runners alive in pursuit of the first 2-hour marathon.  Dr. Skiba later appeared in and narrated portions of NatGeo's Cannes Award-Winning Documentary “Breaking2”. He remains a familiar presence in print and broadcast journalism.

El artículo es de 2023 y se titula: “The fourth dimension: physiological resilience as an independent determinant of endurance exercise performance.” Glenn McConell chats with Professor Andy Jones from the University of Exeter in England about the incredible Eliud Kipchoge and what it took for him to break 2 hr for the marathon distance. Professor Jones, who has an exception research track record, conducted a study with 16 world class marathon runners to determine what factors are required to run a marathon in 2 hr. He then used this data and other information he had to choose which runners would attempt Breaking2 in Monza in 2017. We discuss this attempt and Eliud Kipchoge's eventual breaking of 2 hr in Vienna in 2019. Andy outlines the contributions to the record-breaking run of VO2 max, lactate threshold /the highest percentage of V02 max one can hold and running economy. We also discuss the other factors such as the use of pacemakers, drafting, the crowd, nutritional strategies and of course his shoes. Andy also shares some personal Kipchoge anecdotes. He also talks about his 15 years of experience testing the previous world record holder in the women's marathon, Paula Radcliffe, and estimates what time she could run for a marathon if she had run under the conditions that Eliud Kipchoge had. A really fascinating discussion. Twitter: @Inside_exercise @AndyBeetroot @GlennMcConell1

Canale Telegram: https://t.me/da0a42Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/da0a42/Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/da0a42/Strava: https://www.strava.com/athletes/37970087Sito: https://da0a42.home.blogOppure contattami!Telegram: https://t.me/lorenzomaggianiE-Mail: dazeroaquarantadue@gmail.com----------------------Music credits: Feeling of Sunlight by Danosongs - https://danosongs.com

First, he explains how he worked to bring together the engagement and publicity elements of the Ineos 1:59 Challenge with the performance question at the heart of the project. Also on the conversational agenda were: - How the Ineos 1:59 Challenge differed from Nike and Kipchoge’s unsuccessful Breaking2 project in 2017 [ from 9:20]; - The steps taken once it was decided that Vienna’s Prater Park would make for the best venue [from 17:00]; - Brailsford’s work to get everyone on the team pulling in the same direction [from 26:50]; - The execution of the run by Kipchoge and Co. [from 32:50]; - What success meant to Brailsford and the future of marathon running [from 39:00]. Breaking2 was Nike's tremendously ambitious project to run a marathon in less than 2 hours. The project failed to reach its goal, but it came damn close. And in the process, the brand—and long-distance running more generally—learned new ways to shave time off future races. At the Cannes Lions, we sat down with leaders from Nike, Wieden + Kennedy and production house Dirty Robber to talk about the project's key takeaways. On May 6, 2017, three runners attempted to break the two-hour marathon barrier. Kenya's Eliud Kipchoge ran the fastest marathon in history at 2 hours and 25 seconds. Dr. Phillip Skiba was part of Nike's scientific team for the Breaking2 project. He is board certified in both family medicine and sports medicine, with a PhD in Exercise Physiology. He spent several years in the UK as Director of Sports Medicine at the University of Exeter, and developed the equations, algorithms and software systems used by the British Triathlon Federation in their successful quest for gold at the 2012 London Olympics. Skiba's work is now in use at several Olympic training centers and helps train the fastest runners in the world. If you haven't watched the Breaking2 movie, you can do so for free on Youtube. Although the target sub  2-hour goal wasn't achieved, the project shows us what is possible, and more importantly, how we can go about improving performance. There is so much to be learned in this episode. I hope you enjoy it as much as I did. We discuss: Is it possible to break the 2-hour barrier in the marathon? Why was this project important? The training variables they focused on with each runner. What he would do differently next time. Applications that can be used for every day mortals.
