Host Marcia Franklin talks with Dr. Abraham Verghese, a professor at the Stanford School of Medicine and an author of both fiction and non-fiction works. They discuss not only the themes of his work, but also his thoughts on healthcare reform and ways for doctors to establish better working relationships with their patients. Verghese's first book, My Own Country, was a poignant chronicle of how his life was changed by working with AIDS patients in rural Tennessee. It was a finalist for the National Book Critics Circle Award. He went on to pen another non-fiction work called The Tennis Partner, about a doctor's struggle with mental illness and drug addiction. He is also a frequent contributor to magazines and journals, writing articles about medical ethics. In his first novel, Verghese turned his focus to a work of fiction, Cutting for Stone. It is set in Ethopia, where he grew up. The expansive book follows the saga of two Indian brothers as they learn more about their past. With medicine as its backdrop, it also allows Verghese to explore some of what he views as the best and worst aspects of his profession. We conclude our season with a topic that gets far too little attention in the mainstream media: the history of the U.S. military’s involvement in Somalia, a country deeply mired in terrorism, poverty, and war. Mark sits down with Nairobi-based journalist Amanda Sperber and anthropologist Catherine Besteman to unpack why the United States is waging an unofficial drone war in Somalia and explores the history and human costs of this conflict. They discuss the evolution of Al-Shabaab (an affiliate of Al-Qaeda), civilian casualties from U.S. airstrikes, and how Somalia exemplifies what many consider to be the strategic and moral failings of America’s global war on terror. Have a listen, let us know what you think, and we’ll see you in August when we return for Season 2.   Amanda Sperber is a Nairobi-based award-winning investigative journalist, foreign correspondent, and multimedia storyteller. Her work focuses on East Africa, specifically on Somalia, and the consequences of U.S. drone strikes. She is the author of “Ilhan Omar Demands Answers on Civilian Deaths in Somalia” in The Daily Beast. @hysperbole   Catherine Besteman is Francis F. Bartlett and Ruth K. Ethiopia is seeking debt relief and emergency budgetary support for African countries to boost their response to the coronavirus outbreak. In its three-point submission to the G20 group of countries, Ethiopia is proposing a 150-billion-dollar emergency health financing and budgetary support from the World Bank. Ethiopia is also seeking support from the World Health Organization to strengthen public health delivery and emergency preparedness in Africa. In seeking debt relief, Ethiopia says Africa’s ability to cushion its firms and workers from the impact of the pandemic is constrained by its debt burden. --- Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/newscast-africa/support Learn more about your ad choices. Below you will find Pastor Jason Cruise’s “Sermon Gauntlet”Find out more about Pastor Jason Cruise at jasoncruise.com Description For Web Title: Scripture: Series Engine Keywords: YouTube Description: Working Title: Passage: Supporting Passages: Tuesday: Heart Preparation through meditation Wednesday: Head Preparation through study Thursday: Hands Preparation through arrangement Friday:  Close it out. Exegetical: []Step 1:  Pray For Illumination “I’m not looking for someone who knows what they are doing. I’m looking for someone who knows what I am doing.” -  from Dave Sylvester in York  as the Lord spoke to him in sermon prep Ask for insight. Ask for clarity. Ask for Spirit power to hear His voice. God give me the ability to see this passage as You meant for it to be seen. To understand it as You meant for it to be understood. To apply it in a way that moves people into living practically in Your power. Refuse to chase the information first. Chase His heart about the passage first. Prepare my heart first with His heart Prepare my head next through study Prepare my hands for outline and delivery and digital imagery []Step 2:  Read it, re-read it []Step 3: Read it with an interlinear and break it down []Step 4: Read multiple translations []Step 5: Draw Out Dominant Thoughts ARRANGE: []Step 6: Pray over the arranging that it would make sense Pray for the introduction Pray for the arranging Pray for the closing - for the ability to bring it home. []Step 7: Choose The Communication Model []Step 8: Arrange it in a skeleton - get the bones laid out TYPEOUT: []Step 9: Type Out Sections []Step 10: Write the intro []Step 11: Write the conclusion Images: []Step 12: Craft The Images Background Work: If I was standing there when this passage was unfolding what would I see ? What would I feel ? About what does the passage talk? What is the driving Biblical principle - the timeless truth? What was The Spirit’s intent for inspiring this passage? What does it reveal? What core doctrine does this sermon address? Does This Passage Contain Any: Recurring words? Loud adjectives? Word Pictures? What did it mean to the people when the author wrote it? what the biblical writer was saying to the biblical audience it can never mean what it never meant Is this a story or parable ? If so, briefly describe the characters. Look at it from their position: Is there tension anywhere in this passage? Find the tension and you have a real story. Theological tension? Relational tension? Does the passage itself create tension in me or in the world around me? If this passage were a town, what’s the Main Street? How does this find its fulfillment in Jesus “In every village and hamlet in England there is a road that leads to London.” - Spurgeon Why does this issue matter to God? The Shouting Line: DO NOT REST until I can put this sermon - not the exegesis - into one simple thought. What’s the shouting line? If they drug me off the stage and I had to shout something to remember - what is it? Bridge Work: What does it say now to the people who read it today - in timelessness generally? What does this passage teach me about who God is? What does this teach me about who man is? What is this telling me to do? What Do They Need To Know? What’s the one thing? Why Do They Need To Know It? What Do They Need To Do? Why Do They Need To Do It? Imagine what would happen if we actually did this. Example:  If you actually made a list of debt for people that you owe gratitude and you told them what would happen? What will happen to the person who never discovers the truth or principle you are about to address? What Can I Do To Help Them Remember What’s Being Taught? Is there one core phrase I can use to describe this passage in a single sentence? Is there a compare/contrast to explain the dominant thought? “A life devoted to self ultimately leaves you alone.” Is there a metaphor that can describe the passage? Is there a rhyme to make the domain thought more sticky? "You can be tender without surrender" Is there are structure or a rhythm to the passage? Blessed is the man who does not walk in the counsel of counsel of the wicked, or stand in the path of sinners, or sit in the seat of scoffers (Psalm 1) Why this story ?? Of all the ones that could be chosen, why this one? Application Work: []What’s the goal of this sermon? What do I want them to think, feel, or do … when it’s over? [] If I actually did what this passage is saying how would my life look differently daily ? If I had hidden shame how would this passage affect me? If I were chasing status how would this passage affect me? If I were divorced how would this passage affect me? If I was a teenager how would this passage affect me? If God is only a part of my life but not the authority of my life how would this affect me? []Where can I show God’s mercy in this situation? Exegetical Notes: ARRANGE THE SERMON FOR HEARING: what’s the most effective way to package the sermon so that it can be heard? What Model Am I Using? []Problem. Agitate. Solve. (PAS) Get them to agree with me on a problem or an issue. Agitate it. Stir it up. Solve it with Scripture. []Picture, Promise, Prove, Push Paint a picture of what it could be like or gets attention Capture the promise of the passage Prove it with other Scripture Push for a commitment or action []Hero, Story, Solution The hero/villain goes through a problem and here’s how they solved it or here’s how they failed []PASTOR Person. Start with a person, problem, or pain Amplify the consequences of NOT solving it Story. Insert story, solution, or a system Testimony Offer Response []Before, After, Bridge Before:  here’s your world now After: imagine having this thing gone or solved Bridge:  here’s how to get there []Introduction []How can I be as visual as possible to engage their mind immediately in the beginning? []The Contrast: Positive - Negative - Positive We all want to ___________ (positive) but the problem is _______________ (negative) the good news is that _________________ []If … then []If you don’t do anything, it gets worse []What most people do … []Imagine … []If the only thing you got is … “if the only thing you got from this sermon today was a better understanding of God’s heart for Ethopia, it would be worth it.” []Don’t let this happen to you: []What if … []You’re standing at the crossroads. KEY TRUTH TRANSITION: []Ask them to write down the key truth []Closing What’s the CTA? What do I want them to think, feel, or do? What’s the take-home in all of this? As a former 33rd degree Freemason, ranking member of the p2 lodge and born from a lineage of aristocratic Illuminati blood, Leo has acute knowledge of the powerful network consisting nefarious elite and and exactly what their future plans entail. After years of grooming by the powers that be, in 2006 Leo dissolved many of his alliances and started exposing their members and agendas. Author of works such as Confessions of an Illuminati Vol. 2: The Time of Revelation and Tribulation Leading Up to 2020, Leo offers an authentic insights into what we can expect in years to come. We know that only a privileged, nefarious few truly make the big decisions of the world. Referred to as the Illuminati, they are a powerful network made up of royal bloodlines, secret societies, occult orders, shady banksters, and corporate oligarchs. 2:10 Greg and Leo start by breaking down his story for newcomers by defining the Illuminati and elaborating on his history with them. Listen as Leo describes how the Illuminati is a fragmented group of secret societies that recently unified their intentions to work together for the dawn of a new era. 6:00 Listen as Leo explains the barriers and challenges he's had to overcome in order to bring this information to the public. Listen as Leo outlines his works and details his aristocratic family lineage. 15:42 Listen as Leo details the Masonic roots of the Rastafarian movement, dating back to the Ancient Mystic Order of Ethopia. 16:50 Leo elaborates on another theme found in his book, the rise of freemasonry throughout China, or what he calls the rise of the dragon. 20:00 Listen as Greg and Leo discuss the ethnicity of the power pyramid. As Leo states, when you come from these bloodlines and view it in your daily life it becomes very obvious. And for a person in his position, gatherings with these people can become quite controversial. Leo goes onto describe a manifesto written by a new movement of Rosicrucians that emerged in the early 2000s and their core belief in the resurrection of Christ and that true Christianity it not merely a question of but racial karma.   26:00 Leo discusses a past interview with Project Camelot in which he mentions both Zecharia Sitchin and Balducci. He brings us up-to-date on where his most recent level of research into this topic has led him. 28:30 Join Greg and Leo as the detail for listeners that the Vatican is hiding what they're doing in Mount Graham and how the New World Order is hiding the alien agenda because of their involvement in it. 34:42 Listen as Leo details how the worldwide conspiracy is happening now with the US elections. Leo walks us through the specifics of the relationship between the elites and entities they use as well as tips for psychic defense. 44:42 Join Greg and Leo and they detail the sighting of the Holy Mary of Medjugorje. With bizarre circumstances circulating around these visions, the Pope has dismissed any notion of it's legitimacy, and several mysterious disappearances, including a priest have started happening. 47:00 The United Nations building in New York curiously has a room for mediation  which Leo contends is where the New World Order occult direct their egregore as  part of a project for the New World Order. Satanism and theosophy are deeply entrenched beliefs of many elites in the UN and Illuminati. 56:00 Listen as Greg and Leo elaborate on the future calamities humanity faces. In this episode, the poet, editor and translator Chris Beckett talks to Niall Munro about his latest book, "Tenderfoot". Chris discusses growing up in Ethiopia and questions of privilege, perceptions of Ethiopia and a responsibility he feels to write about the place and its people. Chris also talks about how he portrays his nascent sexuality and how he reflects on Ethopia then and now after numerous trips back to the country in recent years. Chris has published two collections with Carcanet, “Ethiopia Boy” in 2013, a sequence of praise poems about his childhood crush Abebe, and “Tenderfoot” in July this year. He co-translated and edited the first ever anthology of Ethiopian Amharic poetry, “Songs We Learn from Trees”, also out from Carcanet earlier this year. Chris's partner is Japanese painter and sculptor, Isao Miura. Together they published a book of drawings and poems in 2014, “Sketches from the Poem Road", after Matsuo Basho's Narrow Road to the Deep North” which was shortlisted for the Ted Hughes Award and led to a wonderful exhibition of sculpture, paintings and paper installation at the Glass Tank at Oxford Brookes University in 2016. You can find the poems that Chris discusses on the Poetry Centre's Podcast page, where there is also more information about Chris and his work.
