It's true that you can liken recruiting to dating. There is a courting ritual that has to happen between two parties, where if a third party gets involved, there could be issues. Imagine doing this dance with 32 companies in one week!  This is something our guest on today's episode went through after being laid off and embarked on her job search. Alyssa Rhoda joins us today to walk us through how she tackled this monumental task and the struggles that came along with it. Alyssa Rhoda is the director of talent acquisition at a tech company based out of LA called Zephyr. She has been in recruiting for over a decade and is passionate about the candidate experience, company culture, and employee engagement. All reasons why recruiters were after her once she switched her status to “open to work” on LinkedIn.However, even after having a system of questions and points for each company, where Alyssa really put the time and effort into vetting each company in her interviews, the company she chose ended up being a bad fit. This led to her quitting in 45 days after being hired.  If this can happen to Alyssa, this can happen to anyone. So, we wanted to bring Alyssa on today's episode to discuss her experience and share the lessons she learned with our listeners so you have a better understanding and knowledge of how to choose a company most aligned with you. Tune in to hear helpful tips and advice for your current or next job search! Topics discussed in this episode: How Alyssa found her passion in recruiting Alyssa's messy job search experience after being laid off When Alyssa realized when her company wasn't actually a good fit for her The importance of leaning into trusting your gut when making career choices How Alyssa was misled during the interview process Having awareness of your fear and anxiety when searching for jobs Helpful advice Alyssa from lessons learned during this experience Connect with Alyssa Rhoda on LinkedIn! We have a letter from a listener who doesn't think they reacted properly when a colleague quit. They reacted with a big “Really? Why? I thought you liked it here!?!” and then felt like a bad colleague when the person looked visibly uncomfortable and showed them that they'd overstepped. For the colleague, we referenced Episode 55 “The Art of Quitting”. We discussed why the person might have quit that had nothing to do with the workplace or were reasons they didn't want to share. Things like a personal illness or illness of a family member, or maybe the person is being quietly harassed and wants to get away. Whatever the reason, it's that person's to tell and not ours to ask. So when a colleague quits, your response is, “Wow - I've really enjoyed working together, and I will miss having you on the team.” Use the opportunity to share words of appreciation and gratitude for how the person has supported you. Wish them well and offer to help with the transition. It's 100% up to the person who is quitting to share why they quit, where they are going, and how they came to the decision. No questions. No matter how curious you are. Ultimately, it's none of your business. AND, if it is a work issue that you don't know about, the knowledge could impact your work experience. What if it was a breakup, and they're sad about it and want to get away, but they never let anyone know they were dating a colleague? Being kind and supportive around your relationship with them is #1. They've given notice and made the decision, so it's not the time to convince them to stay. You want to help them move forward. Note to the quitters - have your story ready to go because people ARE going to ask, so you want to have an answer in order to minimize the drama. Our job as colleagues is to help someone exit gracefully and be a supportive colleague, figure out how to maintain the relationship and make it easy.

Knowing when to give up is often a challenge for business owners. But there are numerous benefits of quitting when it's clearly appropriate to do so. When we talk about quitting, it could be in terms of a staff member leaving, ending a project, or quitting a job. In all of these cases, it's important to recognize the point at which things just aren't going to get any better.Do you ever find yourself in the situation where something is missing? When this happens, quitting is often the best course of action because otherwise you're just going to continue to hurt your business. The problem, however, is that we have sunk cost bias. As humans we are biased toward focusing on losses rather than the benefits of quitting something. A great example is that you have a staff member and they're not doing a great job. By the time you realize it's a problem, you hesitate because you have all of this money and time invested in that person. In this case, knowing when to give up on that employee is crucial. When you finally let the person go, it's usually a relief for everyone. Trying to push things forward due to the fear of loss is not a great strategy. Quitting is not going to feel good. You're going to feel like you made a big mistake. But you need to look at it as a learning experience. Listen to that gut feeling. After all, why be wrong for longer?Knowing when to give up isn't a skill that comes naturally. But it's important to recognize the benefits of quitting so that when the time comes, you're ready to embrace it and move on.Connect with me on LinkedInWatch episodes on our YouTube Channel Watch this episode on our YouTube Channel Schedule a discovery call with me www.kaizenperformance.com
