What may seem like a novelty video game accessory from the 1980s actually has a much deeper backstory. The Nintendo Power Glove, a game controller you wore on your arm, came out in 1989, but its roots go back to the 1970s. Before it was the "baddest" accessory around, the Power Glove started out as the Data Glove, a high-end instrument used by scientists, MIT, and even NASA. What began as a $10,000 instrument for a new world called "Virtual Reality" eventually entered the consumer market. Did the data glove have more novel applications? Could this unique device even become a toy...? But to make it a toy, a redesign and a MUCH lower price point were both critical, and that meant a lot of compromises in both materials and functionality. Even though the Power Glove was launched with a huge boom, did the at-home gaming experience live up to the hype...?  War Games movie review: Patreon.com/80s

A new Sinister Selection crash-lands on the scene and vows to dispense cosmic justice…just very slowly and on a budget. In 1987's Alien Private Eye, Earth is threatened by an odd combination of narcotics and nuclear weapons. Our only hope is Lemro, a super-cool alien who lives among us as a private detective. Aided by a mysterious woman and a pair of rival space cops, Lemro searches for the two halves of a powerful alien artifact. One half is currently in the possession of the villainous Kilgore, who's using it manufacturer a potent (and very confusing) drug called “soma.” We're not sure how Lemro intends to solve this case, but it'll definitely involve dancing, fighting, and a Nintendo Power Glove. In this episode, Tom Zimmerman remembers how his love for air guitar spawned the development of his groundbreaking VR technology that would morph into the Nintendo Power Glove. Then Bob Crockett tells the story of how a college dropout convinced him to start a VR company that could one day transform healthcare.  Tom's original glove was vital in helping build the VR industry in the 1980s, but it wasn't suited for gaming and would go down in history as one of the gaming industry's big flops. But where the Power Glove fell short, a new glove is reinventing the VR experience. Bob Crockett and Jake Rubin founded HaptX with the goal of creating a virtual experience that was indistinguishable from the real world. Their DK2 VR glove, which can replicate almost any kind of tactile sensation, has brought them one step closer to making that a reality.

Tom Zimmerman, AMY chip Tom Zimmerman worked at Atari from 1982-1984 where he was on the digital audio research team in Atari's Corporate Research Lab in Sunnyvale. There he worked on the AMY chip — a next-generation audio chip. Tom, one of four AMY team members, wrote the 8051 code to control the TTL prototype of the chip. The chip was never released. AMY, which stands for Additive Musical sYnthesis, was originally intended to be part of the Rainbow chipset, which was the core of Atari's next generation of 16-bit microcomputers. Those computers were never finished. Then, the AMY chip was announced to be the centerpiece of the Atari 65XEM, an Atari 8-bit computer with advanced sound capabilities. A prototype of the 65XEM was shown at the 1985 Consumer Electronics Show, but ultimately it was another computer that didn't make it to market. Also: in 1982 Tom filed a patent for a “Data Glove,” a glove with optical sensors to measure the bend of the wearer's fingers. He turned down a $10,000 offer from Atari to buy the rights to the Data Glove. The product would eventually end up at Nintendo, where it became the Nintendo Power Glove. Episode 34 - Dan Morgan 'THE MAN IN THE BOAT' BY DANIELLE DIAMOND Writer, musician, comedian and podcaster (among other things) Dan Morgan joins me as this weeks CO-HOST WITH THE MO-HOST and I have to say he nailed it! Some of you may know Dan from the extremely funny Comedy Geek Sketch Comedy Podcast (if you don't then you should), but we spend some time to get to know the real him. We discuss Dan's start in comedy, how Comedy Geek came to be, Dan's lifelong love of music as well as subjecting him to the usual games and non-sense. P.s. The film we talk about with the Nintendo Power Glove was called The Wizard (1989) and I cannot wait to actually sit down and watch this film. --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/most-best-podcast/message

The Nintendo Power Glove was an accessory for the NES that came out in 1989. They developed it using high-end technology and showed a lot of promise. There was huge hype around the release of the Power Glove including its use in the movie "The Wizard". Initial sales were strong until frustration set in over the functionality and poor controls and was discontinued after only one year. This is the story of the Power Glove and the amazing work that went into developing it along with some true intentions that went beyond just video games. Show Notes: Episode 11

This time on Tavern Talk:Luke hogs most of Tavern Talk to discuss Marvel and Star Wars trailers, and Netflix’s ‘Altered Carbon’… for real this time. Klab’s takes us on some android fueled adventures. Ted “the new kid” brings up VR in the medical community and why the heck is it not good yet, and we take that everywhere from the Nintendo Power Glove to Fallout 4. Bob is still reading Jay Kristoff, has finished the second book and NEEDS the third one published now! We spin off to talk about our love for the ‘Now Playing’ podcast, and talk video game movies.

"Despite all our rage, we're still just rats in a maze?!" Guest Eugene Cordero (Crazy Ex-Girlfriend, Kong: Skull Island) is NOT a fan... of the TNG credits sequence. But he DOES perform a stirring rendition of our popular segment, "A Non-Trekker Summarizes An Episode of Star Trek: The Next Generation." In this case, "Where Silence Has Lease." An excerpt: "Hornhead and Beard #1 are in some kind of jungle-y situation and Hornhead finds the Nintendo Power Glove." Honestly, these should replace the Memory Alpha summaries.SUPPORT TREKS AND THE CITY ON PATREON:www.patreon.com/treksandthecityFOLLOW TREKS AND THE CITY:https://www.instagram.com/treksandthecityhttps://www.twitter.com/treksandthecityTREKS AND THE CITY IS A FOREVER DOG PODCASThttps://foreverdogpodcasts.com/podcasts/treks-and-the-cityTreks and the City Theme Song by Matt Rubano

Jaron Lanier may not have sired the term virtual reality—that honor generally goes to French playwright Antonin Artaud in 1938—but he's one hell of a father figure. As the founder of legendary VR company VPL Research, he both popularized the term and helped create most of the enduring icons of early VR, from The Lawnmower Man's snazzy headset and gear to the ill-fated Nintendo Power Glove.
