Goal Setting and Climbing Your "Mountain" Nothing in life that's worth achieving is going to come easy. Working toward a goal, putting your best foot forward and sweating through it makes achieving it all the more sweet. Why would becoming an amputee be anything different? If you were active before your amputation, then you know what can be done with a lot of work, grit, and determination. It won't be easy. It'll test your resolve MANY times, but, when you get to the goal you set for yourself, you will feel such a sense of excitement and joy like you've never felt! Don't worry about what others are doing or achieving. Remember that comparison is the thief of joy. You focus on you! Do what you can do now, and each day try to be better than the last. The next thing you'll realize is how far you've come since you started. One step at a time has been my mantra since my amputation. I can't look at the big picture or I'll get nervous or doubt what I'm capable of. Instead I focus on putting one foot down at a time, at my pace, and what I can do in this moment. And each ,moment is different. Today I might be whipping around the neighborhood, feeling confident and without pain, and then tomorrow I could be struggling with just walking slowly around my home. All you can do, is work hard with what you have been given each day, but if you can honestly say that you gave it your all then I promise that you will see strides at reaching your goals. One step at a time is meant to be metaphorical, and also very literal, for us amputees. Don't think about walking all day in your prosthesis when you get up, and don't just tell yourself that you'll put it on for a little bit or later today. Put it on with the mindset that you'll wear it for all you can, however long that will be today, knowing that each day brings its own struggles and accomplishments, but you don't know what kind of day it will be until you are in the midst of it. Skiing on one leg is definitely a mind over matter exercise! Mindset matters! What you tell yourself first thing in the morning is how your day will go. When I wake up, I know I will put my leg on first then go through my day. Somedays I cannot get to the gym because it hurts too much so I do what I can at home, keeping it on, and building my tolerance up for wearing it. Other days, I put it on and get a burst of energy and hike 4 to 5 miles without even thinking about it. Mindset matters and what you tell yourself will be the direction your mind takes, and what your body believes. Always get moving with your best intentions and your heart and mind in the most positive place you can be and then see how your day unfolds. One step at a time. This week, it is pretty straight forward. This week I want you to remember to keep speaking positivity to yourself. Write down "ONE STEP AT A TIME" on post it notes and place them in places you spend a lot of time in and around your house to remind yourself to take your goals and your actual steps at YOUR pace and ONE AT A TIME. Hiking is my favorite activity. Every hike is different and challenges me to be focused and push myself. Set a goal. Wherever you are right now physically, mentally, and based on your weather and location and decide what it will take each day to break it down and work towards it at your pace. You can achieve anything you put your mind to if you set mini goals for yourself, or stepping stones to that goal. Make the steps small enough to find success, and big enough to challenge yourself. First time hiking on snow! And then watch yourself break the barriers that you thought were there because of your circumstance. I believe in you! I believe we are all born to fight for what we want and desire. THAT is a Warrior mentality. So, rise up warriors, and sieze this moment. You are not broken, or weak, or disabled.
Have you ever felt like quitting something you know you should be doing. The waves get too high. The pressure is too intense. The obstacles are too overwhelming. You can't quit. You can't. God has a plan for you and HE will help you succeed. Keep moving forward and see how God will take care of you.

Today's episode is all about taking it one step at a time. And it kind of came off of yesterday's episode and topic when I mentioned we all go through hardships, we all go through struggles in our life, those valleys, but it's remembering that those valleys are just a moment. It's just a single moment in our life. And like moments do, they pass. It's always going to pass. Those moments are always going to be here and then they're not here, they're gone, they're here and then they pass.
"When the initial excitement settled, we felt like planning an entire wedding seemed really expensive, overwhelming, and exhausting." Let me back up ... My now-husband John proposed in the summer of 2009, at the end of a 3-week trip we took through Europe. We were in Paris - our last stop - and we waited for hours to get to the lower platform of the Eiffel Tower, where he dropped to his knee with the sparking lights of the tower above us, and lit up city buildings & river boats in the distance. We never even had dinner that night because it got so late, but you know how it is with the crazy excitement you felt on your engagement day - dinner didn't even matter. We had just lived an incredibly powerful moment that was about to change our lives forever. Within weeks, my ring was resized and fit perfectly. We had shared the news with literally everyone we knew, and we started discussions about potential venues and dates, and of course, the elephant in the room - how we would pay for everything. * SPOILER ALERT * These conversations weren't very productive, and we didn't have any breakthrough revelations other than feeling like planning an entire wedding seemed really expensive, overwhelming, and exhausting. My mom, sister & best friends were incredibly excited, and couldn't wait to start planning showers, parties, dress shopping trips, and fun wedding projects. But underneath all the buzz and excitement? There was this nagging discomfort / doubt / anxiety that I just couldn't shake ... It had started as a passing thought, but was starting to grow bigger and harder to ignore. This is when I started to realize that John and I had never even discussed our actual wedding ideas before getting engaged, and the logistics and finances of planning and hosting everything were already incredibly overwhelming - And we really HADN'T EVEN GOTTEN STARTED, which multiplied that feeling by 10x. The cost of living in San Diego was sky high (as it still is, everywhere). We were working really hard to advance in our careers so that we could do and have ALL the fun things. We had some money saved, but not a ton … and we definitely didn't "plan" to spill over onto credit cards to pay for our wedding (trust me, no one "plans" to). So what did we do? PIVOT. We shifted into a completely different mindset. We STOPPED looking at our wedding through the lens of tradition and "what everyone else is doing", and we started thinking outside the box about ways we could create a truly unique experience for our loved ones that didn't look like every wedding we had already been to. A wedding that wouldn't be over in a matter of hours, and wouldn't require tens of thousands of dollars or credit card debt to pay for. Great, so we had made some progress, and we were SO EXCITED about the glimmer of a vision that was starting to come together ... but all of the actual logistics were still hanging over us, like a heavy cloud. Having a vision is one thing, but we had no idea what to focus on first .... A venue? Food & drinks? How do you know if you can afford one thing if you have no idea how much everything else costs? How do you make one decision knowing that it hinges on 27 other things that you can't pin down right this moment? Obviously I needed to find a wedding planner to help us sort out the next steps, because basic, you have to hire a wedding planner, right? I met with a handful of planners who all walked confidently into the Starbucks or bistro bar, high heels clicking, portfolio ready to share - FFWD thru 3 days + 3 meetings, and none of them were LISTENING TO ME. I talked about creative visions of fondue pots on small, intimate 4-top tables, renting a giant mansion for a long wedding weekend, hosting 3-4 separate parties & events, and having someone who could be there to organize and direct independently hired bartenders and servers and coordinate the weekend-of logistics for us. And I was met with blank stare after blank stare. Politely told that it wouldn't work because of A, B, C reason, and had we considered cookie cutter venue D, E, and F which works with preferred vendors X, Y and Z? The thought of paying someone thousands of dollars who clearly had no interest whatsoever in our wedding vision was clearly out of the question. I came home literally crying after interviewing the third planner on my list - she cut me off repeatedly, actually laughed at my fondue idea saying it would be impossible, left me with a list of her preferred vendors and a deadline to decide by Friday or else she was booking another client. Wow. And the bow on top is that she came highly recommended to me by a friend, which made the entire experience even more disappointing. If you've ever met with a pushy vendor who's so obviously just trying to book up their calendar as fast as possible, you know exactly what it feels like to have your ideas dismissed and to be completely unheard. In that moment, John and I were left with a choice. We could have eventually found an affordable enough venue, chosen the cheapest meal option, and gone broke paying for a top shelf open-bar (which incidentally, was one of John's "wedding non-negotiables"). We could have scrapped and saved and charged a few things on credit cards to bring it all together in a wedding that wouldn't be the best of the best, and definitely wouldn't be featured in any wedding magazines or blogs ... but hopefully our friends & family wouldn't be too judge-y and would understand the financial constraints of treating 100 of your closest loved ones to a nice dinner, bottomless drinks, and dancing. We'd check off all the boxes, run through all the traditions, and at the end of the day, we'd be married. After all, wasn't that the whole point? And in that critical moment, thank goodness we woke up and saw that NO - That's not ANYWHERE NEAR THE POINT. And I'm here today sharing this all with you because it scares the hell out of me to think of how close we were to NOT following our vision, and to just going through the motions, and I don't want that for you. And at the same time, it breaks my heart to think of how many engaged couples every single day are in the same position that we were, but who DON'T find the right resources and support and encouragement to follow their dream vision, and who aren't lucky enough to go on to design the wedding that they truly want. So back to the story - in this pivotal moment, John & I took a giant leap of faith, and committed to planning our wedding OUR WAY - to hell with narcissist wedding planners, cookie cutter checklists, outdated traditions, expectations, or worrying about what anyone else thought of our decisions. We got on the same page with this mindset, and we had deep discussions about the things that were most important to us. In the end, we rented a 7,000 square foot mansion, did our own catering - yes, we planned out, shopped for, and brought to life that giant fondue party that was so important to us - we spent 4 solid days hanging out with our 75 closest friends and family, eating, drinking, dancing, talking, staying up late, laughing, and we did it ALL for around $12,000 - for transparency sake, that was in 2010 so someone good at math and economics can adjust for inflation - or, you could trust the "inflation calculator" I found online and use the number $17,000 in today's world. EITHER WAY, for the overall value and priceless experience for everyone involved, I'm going to stand firm in saying that's pretty damn good!!! The couples who give up on the new approach to planning that we focus on here on the Wedding Planning Podcast will likely stay stuck exactly where I was in the story I just told, after meeting with the awful 3rd wedding planner. They'll do exactly what most couples do, and freak out over how much there is to do, how much things cost, and how complicated it feels to go off the beaten path … They'll cave when someone is critical of a fun idea, and pull back when they feel judged for something that they did or didn't do. John and I faced skeptical, judge-y eyes too many times to count throughout our entire planning process - but that's another story, for another time. And they'll fall back to the status quo wedding planners, the big corporate websites, and the free checklists to plan a cookie cutter wedding for them, without ever even knowing the priceless opportunity that has slipped away. The opportunity to design the wedding that YOU actually want, and to share a once-in-a-lifetime experience with your loved ones that leaves a lasting sense of love & connection for decades to come. And to miss out on that, is quite simply, heartbreaking. But here's the final, most important part of this very long email: Unforgettable, life-changing weddings don't just "happen". They don't just magically arise from the mountain of printouts and free checklists, and magazines, budget calculators and Pinterest boards and reels that you consume on loop. And just having a wedding vision isn't enough, without continued support, encouragement, and ongoing direction. The most meaningful & unforgettable wedding celebrations are planned carefully, ONE STEP AT A TIME using a 3-part framework that I've spent the past 12 years perfecting. And the best part is that it's all available for you to enjoy inside my signature planning package, The VAULT . A new MP3 sermon from Calvary Baptist Church is now available on SermonAudio with the following details: Title: One Step At A Time Speaker: David Walker Broadcaster: Calvary Baptist Church Event: Sunday - AM Date: 1/8/2023 Bible: Acts 3:1-11 Length: 45 min.
On today's show, I was joined by author and motivational speaker, Jeff Griffin. His story is motivating, inspiring and moving. He talks a lot about the three D's which are dream, desire and do. You will love this episode and it will give you such perspective. More about Jeff: His mother named him Jeffrey, but his friends call him Griff. He is currently in a wheelchair, but not forever! Jeff always dreamed of playing sports on the ‘big stage'! As a kid he envisioned playing college football as a receiver. He was one step closer to fulfilling his dream when a construction accident left him broken and paralyzed from the waist down. His life and dreams were shattered but not defeated. During those dark days he had a decision to make: he could stay down and quit or get back up and succeed. He chose the latter. As an ordinary man living life from a wheelchair, Jeff has accomplished some extraordinary things. He played in the 2004 Paralympic Games in Athens, Greece, and is a silver medalist for the USA men's wheelchair basketball team. Griff is a national champion who played for the Utah Wheelin' Jazz and is a four-time All-Star MVP. He was the number one men's wheelchair tennis player in the state of Utah, won the St. George Marathon, has two Guinness Book of World Records, and is the author of the award-winning book I'Mpossible: Desire. Dream. Do. He believes everyone has the power and potential to accomplish the impossible if they take the proper steps. During his 16-year career, Griffin's teaching style, humor, and personality have made him one of the most liked and sought-after teachers. He earned his master's degree in education and curriculum and created a worldwide peer-to-peer leadership program for Third-World countries that was recognized at the United Nations in New York City. Griff considers publishing his book one of his greatest accomplishments since he got a D- in English and was told he would never be able to write a coherent sentence. Griff started two successful businesses and created a nonprofit organization called the ‘Road to Recovery', which impacts thousands of injured vets and physically disabled persons. He is passionate about progress, enjoys mentoring youth, distributing wheelchairs to those in need, and giving hope through his humanitarian efforts. Griff married his best friend Emily and together they have four beautiful children. He enjoys eating pizza, playing games, and exercising. These successes, although impressive, do not define who Griff is. What really defines him is his ability to amplify your power and potential, as a Sherpa of sorts, by not only telling you how to turn the impossible into the possible, but by showing you – ONE STEP AT A TIME. https://griffinmotivation.com/ Get a Free Consultation – https://keynutrition.com/free-evaluation/ Free Community Circle -> https://calendly.com/michelleraines/breathe Podcast Q&A Submissions –> https://bit.ly/3c74i7A Cured Nutrition Discount code: Brad Order from Cured Nutrition -> https://bit.ly/3z0mkBv Discount code: keynutrition for 20% off your first Legion order. Today we talk with Marcia Moran, a stroke survivor who fought to live a productive life post stroke. Hearing Marcia's long battle to recovery is a true inspiration! She shares with us how she continued to fight for her ability to walk and talk again even after the insurance companies had discontinued her coverage.Marcia walks us through her entire experience and the thoughts and mindset she adapted to persevere through until she was fully recovered and able to live the life she wanted. We discuss the numerous treatments she sought out and paid for herself to help her speak and walk again.A year after the stroke Marcia began writing about her experience, and then decided she was going to use those experiences to help other stroke survivors in her situation by writing a book called Stroke Forward: How To Become Your Own Healthcare Advocate...One Step At A Time. We learned that Marcia not only had to learn how to walk and talk again, but she also had to learn how to read and spell again while she was in the process of writing her book. Moran not only became a successful author, but has become a life and health coach for other stroke and brain injury survivors. This week is all about taking ONE STEP AT A TIME. Let's be honest, we all have or have had a massive staircase in front of us that we have needed to climb..or are climbing. And the only way to stay encouraged and motivated (instead of overwhelmed) is by taking INTENTIONAL steps forward. One by one. We talk training, we talk true why moments, we talk adoption and having zero control over all our circumstances and about NOT giving up but giving into the concept of ONE. Thank you for listening, as always, we pray it encourages you! Please subscribe, review, screenshot, and share it to your socials and tag us! @bravebabespodcast @melissa_galamay @stephaniediehl_

On this episode we dive into: Getting off the hamster wheel that isn't serving a purpose for youListening to your body so that you can adopt a more intuitive lifestyleSelf-help and it's value in your lifeBreaking habits that align with a better version of yourself The community and spectrum of different tools strategies and tools that you can use to break cyclesThe Take Home:When we are living a fast-paced life, we don't have the time to think about how our body feels, or what we need in our relationships, career and finances.
