Will the rapid growth in independent eye care services put patients with more complex eye conditions at greater risk of losing their sight? With increasing numbers of NHS Eye consultants taking on more private work such as cataract operations this could mean fewer NHS appointments being available for patients with more complex conditions such as glaucoma or macular degeneration which in turn could cause a crisis point in eye care services. RNIB Connect Radio's Toby Davey was joined by Ben Burton, Consultant Ophthalmologist and President of The Royal College of Ophthalmologists to discuss some of the concerns the College has about the growth of independent practices taking on more cataract work and what this means for patients with complex eye conditions who need more urgent eye appointments which would in turn prevent more people from losing their sight and what can be done to stop this potential crisis point in eye care services. Today we are talking with a doc who is celebrating getting back on track after some financial mistakes. He made the same mistake so many of us have and ended up with a bad financial advisor. His advisor sold him a disability policy that was overpriced and not a good product. Once he had his financial awakening he realized he could do this on his own. He fired his advisor and dropped the crappy policy. He took on his student loans in a new way and got rid of those too. He talked about the process of forgiving himself for his mistakes and celebrated the things he did do well. We love this story that shows us that making mistakes is part of the deal and you can always take control of your financial life and get back on track. A video made and posted by Stranger Things actor Millie Bobby Brown has gone viral. In it she criticises the recent press articles about her appearance, saying "this isn't journalism, this is bullying". The 21-year-old posted a three-minute monologue on her Instagram page, in which she called out article headlines and the names of the reporters who wrote them. Anita Rani is joined by Anita Bhagwandas, beauty journalist and author of Ugly, Olivia Petter, journalist with the Independent and Morgan Fargo, Beauty and Wellness Editor British Vogue to talk about the impact of Millie calling this behaviour out.Today the General Medical Council has announced that for the first time since their records began, women doctors practising medicine in the UK are greater in number than their male counterparts in the UK. It is an historic moment, but the announcement also acknowledges that women are more likely to be affected by discriminatory behaviour during their medical training and some specialisms still have relatively low numbers of women. To discuss the challenges faced by women doctors, Anita is joined by Professor Dame Carrie MacEwan, a consultant Ophthalmologist and Chair of the GMC and Dr Leanne Armitage, a locum doctor working in General Medicine and co-founder of the Armitage Foundation for young people from under-represented backgrounds who want to study medicine.Obsessive Compulsive Disorder (OCD) is a mental health condition that affects less than 2 percent of the population. For as long as the actor and star of Downton Abbey Tuppence Middleton can remember, she has had recurring unwanted intrusive thoughts that led to compulsions such as mental counting, checking and handwashing. She also has emetophobia, an intense fear of vomiting. Tuppence joins Anita to discuss her memoir ‘Scorpions,' which explores nearly thirty years of living with OCD and the impact it has had on her daily life. As the beauty brand Lush marks 30 years Anita is joined by one of the co-founders and product designer, Rowena Bird. Starting with one shop in Dorset, Lush now has over 800 stores in 51 countries, so how do they balance their ethical credentials with their global reach?Presenter: Anita Rani Producer: Rebecca Myatt

RESTORING AND MAINTAINING EYESIGHT. Professor Sheng Lim is an internationally renowned ophthalmologist and consultant at St Thomas' Hospital in London. He was trained in the UK and also spent one year as the International Glaucoma Association's postdoctoral fellow at the Mayo Clinic, Minnesota. He was promoted to Professor of Ophthalmology (Glaucoma Studies) at King's College London in 2020, in recognition of his contribution towards ophthalmology research. He is currently the head of ophthalmology research at St Thomas', and founder of their KCL Frost Eye Research Department, one of the largest ophthalmology clinical trial units in the UK. “My ultimate goal, as a professor in glaucoma research, is to find a cure for glaucoma and prevent blindness.” “Vision is probably one of the most intimate and important sensory organs that a human being has.” “In the UK and Europe we have more choices, better suited for the patients, than they have in America.”
Did you know that the more you wear your glasses, the stronger prescription you'll need?Contrast sensitivity loss is an eye problem doctors don't commonly check for. This condition affects the ability to differentiate between shades of grey, causing blurry vision, especially in low light. Carotenoids are antioxidants that protect the eyes against blue light, chemicals, damage from diabetes, and more. However, as we age, carotenoids decrease, so eye protection also decreases. Full-spectrum light can be helpful but will not solve the problem. To improve eyesight, you need to increase the efficiency of the retina. Sunlight is vital for eye and retina health. It allows UV and infrared light into the eye and can also help build up the eye's melatonin. You can increase carotenoids in the eye by consuming foods with lutein and zeaxanthin. Both carotenoids are found in egg yolks. If you choose supplements with lutein and zeaxanthin, look for one with at least 10 mg of lutein and 2 mg of zeaxanthin. Research has shown significant improvement in macular degeneration and contrast sensitivity loss in people who took lutein and zeaxanthin for 12 weeks. Ophthalmologist Dr. Chris Knobbe stresses the importance of removing seed oils from the diet and moving towards an ancestral diet for improved eyesight and eye health. Fatty fish like salmon contain omega-3s, which support eye health and reduce inflammation. DHA is vital for the brain and retina and is found in fish oil and cod liver oil.Vitamin D is critical for every part of the eye and can help with conditions like glaucoma, macular degeneration, and retinopathy. Take at least 10,000 IU of vitamin D every day. Vitamin A is essential, especially for night vision. Zinc can also help!DATA:https://www.sciencedirect.com/science... As preservative-free eye drops become more common, one has to wonder why it is so important to reduce our use of preservatives. What kind of toxicity do preservatives wreak on the eye? And without preservatives, are eye drops still as effective and resistant to infection? Acanthamoeba keratitis can be one of the most devastating diagnoses in ophthalmology, as it can wreak havoc on the cornea unlike few other microbes. On the same token, if caught early, acanthamoeba can be treated quite efficiently and effectively, and patients can have minimal, if any, long-term visual sequelae. Given acanthamoeba is such a dreaded diagnosis, just the thought of it can invoke fear into the ophthalmologist. And while many of us might have a basic approach to acanthamoeba, we also surely have blind spots in our diagnosis and management of this condition, as evidenced by many patients being diagnosed weeks after it occurs. In this episode we bring another Ophthalmologist into the mix with Dr. Andrew Lam, a retina surgeon, professor, and acclaimed author. We explore the intricate details of retina surgery, including magnets used for extracting metal from the eye and the resilience of the human body in recovering from trauma. Dr. Lam shares his journey from growing up with a cardiologist father to combining his love for history and medicine into bestselling books like Saving Sight and Masters of Medicine. Takeaways: Retina surgery requires precision and resilience, often compared to using “the Force” due to its delicate and intricate nature. Medical complications happen to all surgeons, and addressing them with professionalism and teamwork is key to maintaining patient outcomes. Magnets in ophthalmology can be used to extract intraocular foreign bodies, showcasing the intersection of creativity and medicine. Blending passions in medicine, like Dr. Lam's love for history and ophthalmology, can lead to fulfilling and impactful careers. In this episode I dive into my list of the top five things I would never do as an ophthalmologist, from using Visine to playing with fireworks. I also explores the critical connection between nutrition and eye health, detailing how vitamin deficiencies like B1 and vitamin A can lead to conditions such as Wernicke's encephalopathy and xerophthalmia. Takeaways: Top 5 Things Ophthalmologists Avoid: Dr. Flannery shares his professional no-nos, including using Visine, playing with fireworks, using bungee cords, sleeping in contact lenses, and delaying cataract surgery, all of which carry significant risks to eye health. The Dangers of Vitamin A Deficiency: A lack of vitamin A can lead to night blindness, xerophthalmia, and corneal scarring, underscoring the importance of a vitamin-rich diet. B Vitamins and Eye Health: Dr. Flannery explains how deficiencies in thiamine (B1) and folate (B9) can cause nutritional optic neuropathy and Wernicke's encephalopathy, both of which may result in vision loss. Humor Meets Eye Safety: True to his style, Dr. Flannery uses humor to explain the dangers of fireworks, bungee cords, and other seemingly harmless activities that can cause serious eye injuries. Ever wondered what makes your eyes pop when you see someone attractive? In this rib-tickling episode of Join the Docs, our dynamic duo, Professor Jonathan Sackier and Doctor Nigel Guest, dive deep into the eye-opening world of dilated pupils and attraction. The Docs hilariously dissect how Renaissance women, in their quest for beauty, resorted to using atropine extracted from the belladonna plant to dilate their pupils. Imagine the scene: women with eyes wide open, stumbling around like they've just walked out of a funhouse mirror maze, thanks to the atropine-induced blurred vision. Talk about beauty being in the eye of the beholder—if only they could see clearly! Why did Renaissance women risk it all for dilated pupils? The Docs paint a vivid and comical picture of these women accumulating bruises while endeavouring to look alluring. Picture them trying to navigate a crowded marketplace, squinting at apples and mistaking them for oranges, or worse, bumping into their crush and mistaking him for a lamppost. It's a wonder they didn't end up with more than just a few bruised egos! The lengths people go to for beauty—it's enough to make you blink twice. What about the modern uses of this eye-popping substance? Jonathan and Nigel don't just stop at the Renaissance; they fast-forward to today, where atropine is still making waves, albeit in a more controlled manner. The Docs discuss its role in eye exams, where it helps doctors get a good look at the back of the eye, and in treating certain types of poisonings. Imagine going to the eye doctor and having your pupils dilated, only to walk out feeling like you've just stepped into a Salvador Dalí painting. But wait, there's more! The Docs also delve into the psychology behind why dilated pupils are considered attractive. They explain that larger pupils can signal arousal and interest, making a person appear more appealing. Jonathan and Nigel can't resist poking fun at the idea, imagining a world where everyone walks around with artificially dilated pupils, leading to a society of perpetually surprised and overly interested individuals. In the end, Join the Docs isn't just about learning; it's about laughing and seeing the world through a slightly more dilated lens. So, whether you're a history buff, a science geek, or just someone who loves a good laugh, this episode is sure to leave you with a twinkle in your eye and a chuckle in your heart.—--DISCLAIMER: The views and opinions expressed on Join the Docs are those of Dr. Nigel Guest, Jonathan Sackier and other people on our show. Watch our interview on YouTube here https://youtu.be/GwR82IYJTbE EPISODE #343 with Dr. Sui Wong on “Unlocking Brain Health: Insights from a Leading Neuro-Ophlamologist we will cover: ✔ Dr. Sui Wong's career path in medicine, that led her to write 4 books to help her patients (and the world) improve their brain health. ✔ How understanding our eye health can help us to prevent neurological disorders (like Alzheimer's Disease) in the future. ✔ What we should all understand about our eye health for improved health and longevity. ✔ What common neuro-ophthalmology cases she sees. ✔ Why did she introduce Mindfulness into a study on Visual Snow Syndrome? ✔ What would Dr. Wong add to our list of Top 6 Health Staples? ✔ How to learn from Dr. Wong, and find her books. On today's episode #343 we meet with Dr. Sui H. Wong, a Neurologist and Neuro-Ophthalmologist based in London, United Kingdom. In addition to her clinical work as a medical doctor and physician, Dr. Wong is an active neuroscience researcher, who translates pertinent and clinically relevant questions into research, to improve person-centred patient outcomes. Additionally, she has the qualifications and experience to consider a broader spectrum of lifestyle-specific interventions. Dr Wong's holistic approach in empowering patients has been recognized with many awards, and this is just the beginning for her. When I was introduced to Dr. Wong, an active neuroscience researcher with a mission of translating important clinically relevant questions into research for improved person-centred patient outcomes, I knew I had to speak with her. She is a widely published author and researcher with over 110+ peer-reviewed publications in medical journals, chapters and conference abstracts, to date. I looked at the articles Dr. Wong has published, and one caught my eye. She's done extensive research that you can find in Ophthalmology Journals, like a recent article that I'm going to paraphrase, but it was called Visual Snow Syndrome (which is a neurological condition where individuals see persistent flickering white, black, transparent or colored dots across the whole visual field) After Mindfulness-Based Cognitive Therapy.[i] We have spent some time on this podcast walking through Pubmed.gov, and if you go there, and put Mindfulness into the search bar, you will come up with over 30,000 results. Let's meet Dr. Sui Wong, and see what we can learn from her decades of research and her thoughts on what lifestyle-specific interventions she recommends. Welcome Dr. Wong, thank you for coming on the podcast today, and meeting me, all the way from the UK (where I was born)(Worthing, Sussex). Welcome. Q1: Can you give us an overview of why you chose this path and ended up in Neuro-Ophthalmology with an explanation of what you do with your work? Q2: How can understanding our eye health help us to prevent neurological disorders in the future? We've covered Alzheimer's Prevention strategies and I wonder what you would with the importance of our brain health? Q3: I listened to a recent podcast you did on Neuro Podcases and while I don't have a case for you, I'll tell you I had a scary eye experience years ago? It turned out to be an ocular migraine, but I seriously thought I was going blind. Before I spoke to my doctor, I had no idea what this was, and that it was nothing to worry about. What do you recommend we ALL learn and understand about our eye health for improved health and longevity? Q3B: Is there a connection between migraines in our head, and our gut-brain axis? Q4: What are some common neuro-ophthalmology cases you see? Q5: I looked at your research and one of your publications drew my attention. It was the Visual Snow Syndrome study that improved with Mindfulness-Based Cognitive Therapy. Since we talk about Mindfulness often on this podcast, can you share what this study revealed? What can we all take away from the power of Mindfulness? Q6: What advice would you give us outside of this list that we've created from all our interviews, of the TOP 6 health staples to boost our physical, and mental heath, helping us to age gracefully, and how much of our health do you think has to do our brain health? Q7: For people to reach you, what is the best way? What services do you provide? Q8: Anything I have missed? Dr. Wong, I want to thank you for your time, meeting with me today, and helping us to all make the connection with our brain health, and longevity. RESOURCES AND CONNECT WITH DR. Julie Chung is an ophthalmologist and the co-founder of the hair-tool company T3. Even while in med school to become a glaucoma and cataract surgeon, Chung always put effort into her hair in the mornings. However, her go-to hair dryer was ineffective and heavy. As a gift to Chung, her now-husband Kent Yu took it upon himself to create a lighter, sleeker model with innovative technology to combat frizz. Realizing the white space in haircare, Chung then designed a marketing strategy that positioned the hair dryer as a beautiful, luxe item. Thus, T3 was born and was an immediate success. The brand sold out multiple times and eventually had retailers who'd shunned it at first calling to stock its product. In the years that followed, Chung and Yu designed flat irons, curling irons, and other products, all in T3's signature polished style. This year, they celebrated 20 years of T3 and launched their first hot-air styler, the T3 Aire 360. Chung still practices medicine but is increasing her time with T3 as she looks to the future of her independently owned brand.See Privacy Policy at https://art19.com/privacy and California Privacy Notice at https://art19.com/privacy#do-not-sell-my-info.
