Cast your mind back, if you will, to the 1990s, when reality TV was new. Though the genre was young, many had already written off shows like The Real World as trash. But one young man saw an opportunity, and thought that maybe there was a way he could use television to save lives. His name was Pedro Zamora, and his work wound up changing the course of more lives than he could have possibly imagined. That story's the subject of a new video that I just posted this weekend — about Pedro, about MTV, and about a turning point in the fight against AIDS.When Pedro was on The Real World in 1994, one of his closest friends was an artist named Judd Winick. Judd very generously spoke to me about his time on The Real World for my video. I have excerpts from that interview in the video on YouTube. But Judd shared so many fascinating stories and insights that I wanted to make our full conversation available. So this week, for a special episode of the Sewers of Paris, you'll hear my full interview with Judd Winick. We chatted about getting onto The Real World, about befriending Pedro, and about becoming part of a movement that changed the course of history.Check the episode description for a link to my YouTube video about Pedro's work and legacy. And if you want to see more of Judd's work, I'm also including links to his book Pedro & Me; to the upcoming 11th book in Judd's HiLo series; and more information about the National AIDS Memorial and the Pedro Zamora Scholarship. My video about Pedro: https://youtu.be/o2Le9Bf_s3wPedro & Me: https://us.macmillan.com/books/9780805089646/pedroandme/ HiLo Book 11: https://www.penguinrandomhouse.com/books/741634/hilo-book-11-the-great-space-iguana-by-judd-winick/ The Pedro Zamora Scholarship: https://www.aidsmemorial.org/pedro-zamora-scholarship Donate to the National AIDS Memorial and the scholarship: https://www.aidsmemorial.org/donate-now
Judd Winick is an author, comic, cartoonist and pioneer of reality television having been a main cast member of MTV's “The Real World: San Francisco” in 1994. His children's graphic novel series “HILO” is on The New York Times Best Sellers List! This episode is jam-packed with laughter, nostalgia, emotion, and memories as they discuss the life and death of his MTV roommate, Pedro Zamora, and meeting his wife, Dr. Pam Ling, on the show! Hosts Beth Stolarczyk and Jon Brennan have a blast with their guest and fellow Real Worlder. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices
This is the true story... nope, that's a total hack intro for someone who has more than transcended his appearance on MTV's The Real World San Francisco. Yes, we're talking about Judd Winick: cartoonist, writer, and creator on some of the best comics in the last 30 years. We rewind all the way back before Real World, where he and someone named Brad Metzer were slumming it in Boston, trying to get their careers going. We talk about the development of Pedro & Me, his award winning first graphic novel about his time with AIDs activist and fellow RW cast member, Pedro Zamora. Then there's the Adventures of Barry Ween, Boy Genius, Green Lantern, Green Arrow, Batman, Exiles, and so many more! And if that ain't enough, his third act is as the engine behind the highly successful series of kids graphic novels, Hilo. We're tired just thinking about all the work he's done! You can follow Judd on X and Instagram @juddwinick. And look for Hilo Book 10 in 2024!_____________________Check out a video version of this episode on our YouTube channel: youtube.com/dollarbinbandits.If you like this podcast, please rate, review, and subscribe on Apple Podcasts. It's a pivotal moment in Bitch Talk herstory. We were able to "sit down" with Real World San Francisco cast members (and storytellers) Pam Ling and Judd Winick as well as directors Stacey Woefel and Bill Horner from the documentary Keep the Cameras Rolling: The Pedro Zamora Way.All of us at Bitch Talk were teenagers when this season of The Real World came out and it was a game changer. We were all affected by this season and knew deep down it was different. And, during San Francisco's Frameline Film Festival, you can see how an activist named Pedro Zamora changed the conversation about being a person who was living with HIV and then subsequently dies of AIDS. We spoke with Stacey, Bill, Pam, and Judd about why this film is coming out now, what they may have learned about Pedro that they didn't know while the doc was being made, landing a sit-down interview with President Bill Clinton, what it was like to know Pedro as a friend, how Pedro's family feels about the film, and so much more. It was and is an honor to have all of these folks on our show and to be able to talk about Pedro was healing. His presence was felt during this interview and we're moved to keep his memory and activism going -- even if it's just a small part. We walked away from the interview knowing we need more Pedros in this world. --You can see Keep the Camera's Rolling: The Pedro Zamora Way at the Frameline Film Festival on June 20 at the Castro Theater and streaming online on June 24 - June 30--Follow Keep the Cameras Rolling on IG , Twitter , Facebook, and their websiteFollow Stacey Woelfel on IG, Twitter, and FacebookFollow Bill Horner on IG and FacebookFollow Judd Winick on IG, Twitter, Facebook and at his websiteFollow Pam Ling on IG--Thanks for listening and for your support!
It's my absolute pleasure to share this very special chat with you in honor of World AIDS Day (December 1st). My guest today is none other than Judd Winick from Season 3 of The Real World San Francisco or as many remember, Pedro Zamora's close friend and roommate. JUDD WINICK grew up on Long Island, where he spent countless hours doodling, reading X-Men comics and the newspaper strip Bloom County, and watching Looney Tunes. Today, Judd lives in San Francisco with his wife, Pam Ling; their two kids; and their cats, Chaka and Sleestak. When Judd isn’t collecting far more action figures and vinyl toys than a normal adult, he is a screenwriter and an award-winning cartoonist. Judd has scripted issues of bestselling comic series, including Batman, Green Lantern, Green Arrow, Justice League, and Star Wars, and has also been head writer on the Hulu network’s animated series, The Awesomes. Judd also appeared as a cast member of MTV’s The Real World: San Francisco and is the author of the highly acclaimed graphic novel Pedro and Me, about his Real World roommate and friend, AIDS activist Pedro Zamora. Visit Judd and Hilo online at www.juddwinick.com or find him on Twitter at @JuddWinick. Ross Rojek talks with Winick about his newest release, HILO: Book 3.
Today we start getting real about the show that started it all. We talk about how The Real World came to be, reminisce about the early episodes, and we talk about how the show has evolved. We also interview Judd Winick who starred on the ground-breaking San Francisco season, married one of his cast mates, and became close with Pedro Zamora. We also find out what Judd is up to now, and how he is living his dream as a New York Times' best-selling author/illustrator. We didn't realize when we started this episode that we were going to do more, but after we taped it we had so much left to say. So, this is part 1 in a series about the show and how it changed TV and our lives.
