POPULARITY
For this episode we welcome the extraordinary talents of Aaron J, Brooklyn's Sure Thing record label and podcast founder, known for hosting an immense list of explorative modern techno artists from around the globe. Altering our consciousness for the first time in 2023 with a particularly awe inspiring set at Sustain-Release, Aaron's deeply considered and intricate approach is something of sheer beauty, and coupled with masterful technical ability, his inspiring DJ sets allow for fully immersive dancefloor experiences. Here Aaron explores the softer edges of his expansive sound palette, meditative soundscapes and tranquil IDM converging in total harmony for what he describes as a 'recalibration of the senses'. @arn_j @sure_thing Q. What sounds or feelings did you draw upon when gathering inspiration for this mix, and what listening environments could you imagine it being best enjoyed in? A. Of all the mixes I've put together over the years, this one definitely feels the most vulnerable. The months I spent thinking about and working on this mix accompanied an intensely busy time in my life, and the process helped me stay in touch with the simple joy of listening as a way of stepping back and letting things go. There is a direct connection here between the music within and the emotions that live inside me. At the same time, I've tried my best to mix this as transparently as possible, so that the act of DJing takes a back seat and allows the music to take center stage. The inspiration behind the tracks I chose and the story of the mix is one of finding balance, so I hope listening to it feels like a casting off of the present day and a recalibration of the senses. I'd love for people to listen to the mix in a setting where they feel most protected from the changes and stressors of the outside world, whether that be sitting outside in nature or laying on a couch surrounded by the comforts of home. Q. Are there any songs in the mix that you were especially excited to share, and what is it about these tracks that resonate with you so much? A. There is a track in the mix by Autumn of Communion called “Goodbye PK” dedicated to the late Peter Kuhlmann, who many of your listeners will know as the legendary Pete Namlook of FAX +49-69/450464. It's an immensely moving track that manages to convey both the tragedy of his loss and the depth of the beauty he left with the world, and I feel we're so fortunate to have music and influences like this in our recent history. I included it early to set the tone of the rest of the mix, which is quite different than any I've done before, and to pay my respects to those who've inspired our scene from the very beginning. Q. I was lucky enough to witness your set at Sustain-Release in 2023 and was in awe of your ability to practice restraint while steadily building up tension and energy in the set with such clinical and seamless execution. Is this part of the DJ craft something you spend a lot of time planning and refining? A. That was such a life-changing moment for me, so I'm really glad you were there! You really nailed what I hoped to accomplish with that set, and I definitely spend a lot of time thinking about where my sets will begin, where I would like them to end up, and what sort of path I might take to get there. Understanding the minutiae of how a transition will affect someone's state of mind and how to propel someone forward without jarring them back to reality is something I'm always working to improve on. That said, the upward trajectory is not always the most interesting one, and there are so many other ways of charting a course through a set that I hope to be able to explore. For the mix I've made for you, it's not so much a set that builds energy as it is one that expands and contracts, hopefully in a gentle and purposeful way.
Daniel Pemberton is an Academy Award-nominated English composer and songwriter. In 1994, at the age of 16, he recorded an album in his bedroom using a multitrack cassette recorder. It caught the attention of the music producer Pete Namlook, who released it on his label, leading to a flurry of soundtrack commissions. In the years that followed, my guest wrote music for TV shows including Peep Show, The Dark Crystal, Enola Holmes, and Slow Horses. But it's his feature film work for which he is best known. He has collaborated with many of the world's leading directors, composing for Ridley Scott's The Counselor, Danny Boyle's Steve Jobs, Guy Ritchie's The Man from U.N.C.L.E., Michael Mann's Ferrari, and Aaron Sorkin's The Trial of the Chicago 7 –– for which he was nominated for an Oscar. He has also composed the soundtrack for the Oscar-winning Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse, and several video games including LittleBigPlanet and Concord. In 2009, the Guardian's Paul Moody said of my guest: “few know his name but millions hear his music almost every day.” Be attitude for gains. https://plus.acast.com/s/my-perfect-console. 5th Mix in my interludes series; building a mix from the tracks that sit between the tracks on artist's albums. Each track used is under 90 seconds in length with a focus on ambient electronic sounds. Includes tracks from HNNY, Symmetry, Radiohead, Steve Hauschildt, The Black Dog, FSOL, Murcof, DJ Healer, Kraftwerk, Pete Namlook, Anthony Naples, Petrichor, Max Graef, FUSE, Bioshpere, Boards of Canada, Nacht Plank ...but not in that order
The Deep Breakfast mix series has slowly (quite quickly compared to my isolatedmix efforts!) become one of the greatest ambient-leaning mix series around, pulling in some of the finest curators and artists to grace our small world. From well-known artists and DJs to passionate music collectors, it seems Francesco, the curator, is intent on hosting a series truly meant for every corner of the ambient spectrum. The name of the mix series gives you an idea of what to expect, and for my submission, I battled hard with what style to attempt in order to live up to the many great mixes that have been featured before. Breakfast to me - deep or not - can often be light and uplifting - chill or even dubtechno on some mornings. But similarly, a deep breakfast may also mean the edges of light at 4 or 5am… and this is more the route I went with this mix. Look out for some of the many upcoming ASIP tracks featured in this one!Big thanks to Francesco for the invite, and I hope you all enjoy the mix. Pete Namlook, “Power Supply II” from Namlook IV (1994 Fax +49-69/450464). “The music originated instinctively whilst being played live. There was no concept for the composition before, only a kaleidoscope of sounds stemming from the given instruments. The music of this CD is “dedicated” to the missing 220V power supply, the broken EMS Synthi which I dropped during the setting-up of my equipment, the SE-1 which instantly created its own sounds during the live recording and the Studio 440 with 2 faulty pads and a disk drive which had to be convinced to cooperate.” 5:00 05:16 2. Episode 122 Electronic Music for Babies Playlist Track Time Start Time Introduction –Thom Holmes 09:56 00:00 1. Raymond Scott, “Lullaby” (14:06) and “Sleepy Time” (4:25) from Soothing Sounds For Baby Volume I: 1 To 6 Months (1964 Epic). Monophonic recording. Mine includes the insert. 18:30 09:56 2. Raymond Scott, “Tempo Block” (3:15) and “The Happy Whistler” (10:45) from Soothing Sounds For Baby Volume II: 6 To 12 Months (1964 Epic). Monophonic recording. Mine includes the insert. 14:12 28:22 3. Raymond Scott, “Little Tin Soldier” (9:24) and “Little Miss Echo” (7:23) from Soothing Sounds For Baby Volume III: 12 To 18 Months (1964 Epic). Monophonic recording. Insert is missing. 17:10 42:17 4. Rosemary, “Undiscovered Island” from Rosemary And Little Andy, Lullaby From "Rosemary's Baby" (Sleep Safe And Warm) (45 RPM) (1968 Columbia). Written by, arranged and conducted by Stan Applebaum; Producer, Wally Gold. This single was not from the movie soundtrack to Rosemary's Baby, but was inspired by the movie and featured an alternative version of the lullaby from the film. I found that track to be a little too unsettling for a podcast about music for babies, but I did find that the B side, “Undiscovered Island” had a much more calming effect. I believe the instrument heard is a Moog Modular keyboard with the glide feature. Wally Gold, who produced this album, is known to have use the Moog Modular on other recordings. Monophonic recording. 02:57 59:17 5. Steven Halpern, “Brahams Lullaby Part 3” from Lullabies & Sweet Dreams (1984 Halpern Sounds). Grand Piano, String Synthesizer, Steven Halpern; Violin, Daniel Kobialka. I couldn't help but include a track from Steven Halpern, one of the founding fathers of new age music. As for electronics on this one, there is a string synthesizer. 02:25 01:02:21 6. Luke Slater, “Dreams of Children” from X-Tront Vol. 2 (1993 Peacefrog Records). This track is a little bit manic for relaxing babies, but it has a minimalist repetition that becomes trance-inducing. And one could find solace in that sound. 07:50 01:04:44 7. Howie B., “Music for Babies” from Music For Babies (1996 Polydor). Keyboards and treatments, Howie B. 05:27 01:12:24 8. N., Tracks 12, 19, 22, 23” from Memories From Before Being Born (2005 + Belligeranza). This is a solo work of one Davide Tozzoli, who lives in Italy. An unusual disc of glitch sounds, processed two empty tape recorders an echo machine, and minimal synthetic filters. I selected four of the more mesmerizing tracks and strung them together. “Two empty tape-recorders, one connected to the other, no sound if not the distortion produced by the tape-recorders themselves in play/rec. On this recording of Nothing the modulations of vintage analogic effects: emptied frequencies, prenatal sounds without any sonic grain, audio for a flat electroencephalogram. Memories from before being born," a possible conceptual-noize manifesto.” 05:41 01:17:41 9. Pete Namlook, Music for Babies (excerpt) from Music for Babies (2009 Fax +49-69/450464). On Christmas 2011 "Music For Babies" CD release without cover or catalog# was sent out as a give-away with orders directly from the label. All tracks written, mixed, and produced by Pete Namlook. We have hear prenatal heartbeats mixed with electronic music. Perfect! 15:39 01:23:18 10. Chris Kimbell, “Sleepwave” from Ultrasound / Sleep (2007 Pause). A mellow ambient tune but without any detectable prenatal ultrasounds, as the title might indicate to some. 11:04 01:38:50 11. Lee Rosevere, “Dreaming” from The Ambient Baby (2009 Kazoomzoom). Composed, performed, produced by Lee Rosevere. All original material designed specifically for infants from birth to about two years of age. “Little ones are engaged early on by rhythmic sounds at the start. The sounds then weave into a gentle and soothing environment to help babies fall asleep.” 05:59 01:49:50 12. Lullaby Movement, “Ru-Ru (Sleep Little Baby)” from David Holmes – LateNightTales (2016 LateNightTales). An eclectic mix of tracks from DJ David Holmes, includes this muted little lullaby with a haunting vocal. 03:55 01:55:42 13. Dana Falconberry, “Sea Stones” from Dreamland (Songs For Lulling) (2017 Not on label). Falconberry explains why she created the private recording: “Years ago, I made an album of lullabies for a friend of mine who had just had her first baby. She encouraged me to release a lullaby album to the public, since it helped her with her child so much, which was the main inspiration for this album (thanks Lisa!!). . . . People have been telling me for as long as I can remember that my voice puts them to sleep. Even more common has been fans approaching me at the merch table after a show and telling me that they use my albums to put their babies to sleep. Now, I can say that is a complicated thing for a songwriter to digest, but ok babies, I hear you, let's go. Here's a full album of songs to take you off to Dreamland.” 04:39 01:59:30 Opening background music: Pete Namlook, “Attracting Attention” and “The Womb” from Music for Babies (2009 Fax +49-69/450464). Excerpt (12:57) Opening and closing sequences voiced by Anne Benkovitz. Additional opening, closing, and other incidental music by Thom Holmes. Wind whips over ice, Fingers numb, breath clouds the air, Sun a pale, cold eye. First comes the snow, then the cold. Bitter cold. Ugh, remind me again why I live here. I couldn't resist a quick following up the snow mix with a frozen mix. Just like the snow mix, all the tracks here have cold words in their titles. I really liked putting two tracks from Harry Towell back-to-back. One new one from last year called Coldspell and then one from all the way back in 2010 that he released under his Spheruleus moniker called simply, Frozen. I was literally drinking hot coco with peppermint while mixing these tracks so I suggest you do the same while listening. Or maybe something a bit stronger. She performed all of the instruments on this album. The album was not immediately popular but seeded the nascent ambient movement that was growing in Japan at the time. Takashi Kokubo, “A Dream Sails Out To Sea - Scene 3” (2019 Light In The Attic). Originally released in 1987, this track was part of the new wave of Japanese ambient music. By that time, Kokubo was already reknown for his synthesizer skills on a part with Isao Tomita. He turned to sound design and ambient music and has been instrumental in addition to creating such sounds as the nationally-used mobile phone earthquake alert and credit card payment jingles. Yoichiro Yoshikawa, “Nube” from Cyprus (1988 Eastworld). Original sound track of Japanese TV program. Yoshikawa was already a reliable session musician when he acquired one of the first Phophet-5 synthesizers in Japan. He quickly became a go-to composer for television and other purposes, such as soundscapes for museum exhibitions. Tetsu Inoue, “Low of Vibration” from Ambiant Otaku (1994 Fax +49-69/450464). Before I met Tetsu around the year 2000, I was fascinated by music such as this which had all of the elements of ambient music—slow and forming harmonies, spatial rhythms rather than beats, and a sustained energy throughout—without sounding at all like something out of an Eno production. Produced and performed by Tetsu Inoue. Kenji Kawai, “Ghostdive” from Ghost in the Shell (Original Soundtrack) (1995 RCA). An ambient work from the popular movie soundtrack.Composed, Performed, Produced, Arranged, Keyboards, Instruments, Kenji Kawai; synthesizer, Hironori Houki. Engineer, Serge Modular Music System, Sonic Boom (Pete Kember). Some interesting modular synthesizer ambience. John Foxx and Harold Budd, “Raindust” from Translucence + Drift Music (2003 Edsel Records). Composed, produced, and performed by Harold Budd, John Foxx. John Foxx and Harold Budd, “Some Way Through All the Cities” from Translucence + Drift Music (2003 Edsel Records). Composed, produced, and performed by Harold Budd, John Foxx. Pete Namlook, Tetsu Inoue, “Ethereal Being” from 2350 Broadway 4 (2007 Fax +49-69/450464). Composed, produced, and performed by Pete Namlook, Tetsu Inoue. Recorded at Bretton Hall, New York and Klanglobor Hödeshof. Tetsu was an endless collaborator. Here he and the wondrous Pete Namlook wove some ambient magic. Tetsu Inoue, “Kaze” from Inland (2007 Fax +49-69/450464). Written, performed and produced by Tetsu Inoue. This was his post-glitch faze, which brought together, strangely enough, element so his earlier ambient work and glitch music for computers. Masuko Shinji, “Woven Music for Blue Steppe” from Woven Music (2011 Jagjaguwar). All music, vocals and guitar, 増子真二 (Shinji Masuko). This is a project by Masuko, who sometimes works with the Boredoms. It has a characteristic high but sustained energy level that flirts with the outer reaches of the ambient music concept. Caroline Park, “Grain 5” from Grain (2011 Private Chronology). This is a cassette release by Park, often known her for generative composition work and electronic improvisations based on parameters that she defines. Recorded, performed, and mixed between May 2010 and January 2011 in Los Angeles and Boston. Sarah Davachi, “First Cadence” from Antiphonals (2021 Late Music). Composed, Recorded, Performed, Mellotron (bass flute, recorder, oboe), Tape Echo, Sarah Davachi. A recent ambient work by this contemporary experimenter. In this episode Gary Mansfield speaks to Pure Evil (@pureevilgallery)Pure Evil was born Charles Uzzell Edwards in South Wales in 1968. He grew up in a world of art thanks to his father, Welsh painter John Uzzell Edwards . The father's artwork undoubtedly impacted his son, demonstrated in a range of influences from Cubism to Minimalism, from Picasso to Chagall. The physical and cultural landscape of the 1990's U.S. intrigued and beckoned the young Pure Evil, and upon completing his studies in graphics and fashion in London he picked up his skateboard and set off for California's West Coast. He established himself in San Francisco, working for the Anarchic Adjustment clothing label as a clothing designer / pattern cutter / graphic designer. He produced countless t-shirt graphics for screen printing, dropped in on the West Coast rave scene, and travelled to Japan where West Coast Streetwear was a hot item. Pure Evil also became involved in the musical fabric of San Francisco and DJ'ed and was an electronic recording artist for Pete Namlook's ambient electronic music label, FAX (based in Frankfurt, Germany). For more information on the work of Pure Evil go tohttps://pureevilgallery.com/To Support this podcast from as little as £3 per month: www.patreon/ministryofartsFor full line up of confirmed artists go to https://www.ministryofarts.orgEmail: ministryofartsorg@gmail.comSocial Media: @ministryofartsorg See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.

After a stellar week for premieres, we wrap up for this week with an amazing, high octane techno track, from hardware enthusiast Stefan Goldmann. Goldmann's music has been released on labels like Perlon, Innervisions, and others since 2001. In further years, Goldmann has created a tight relationship with Berlin's Berghain and Panorama Bar club, for which he publishes a column, is a co-author of its book, and is the creator of the Elektroakustischer Salon event series. Goldmann's label, Macro was founded by in 2007 and has released some legendary records from equally incredible artists. Its releases range from techno tracks to symphonic recordings. It has also been home to releases from artists such as KiNK, Maria Chavez, Peter Kruder, Pete Namlook, Raudive, Santiago Salazar and remixes by Pépé Bradock, Ricardo Villalobos and The Knife's Oni Ayhun. A series of three 7″ on records on Macro, sees Stefan Goldmann probing the upper temporal reaches of techno. Clocking in at 150 bpm, these tracks are bold and blazing signals for a collective return to highly energised club experiences. More bouncy than harsh, these tracks show impressively how different tempos allow for their own variety of joyful expression. Toady we premiere the track ‘Geared' which finishes out the 6 track release with raw voltage and sparks flying. The blistering yet functional techno bomb is driven by well crafted analogue tool. Bleep heaven at 150bpm, sounds good to me. Massimo Vivona on The DJ Sessions presents the "Virtual Sessions" 5/26/21 About Massimo Vivona - Massimo Vivona was born in Sicily Italy. He was young and impressionable during the explosion of electronic influence in music and was absolutely captivated by the 'other worldly' sounds that were able to be achieved through experimentation of electronic instrumentation. Groups such as Pink Floyd, Kraftwerk, Rockets and Mike Oldfield were all a huge inspiration for Massimo to go deeper into his passion for music production. Also influenced by funk, Massimo cites tremendous inspiration was sparked by artists such as Johnny Guitar Watson and James Brown. Massimo began Dj'ing at age 11 at events in Sicily and these events kept growing larger. Upon coming of age, Massimo moved to Germany to pursue music production further. When his first production "De Largo' was complete, he gave it to Pete Namlook of FAX RECORDS label in Frankfurt. Torsten Fenslau, the manager of club DORIAN GRAY in Frankfurt got a hold of the single and it was soon after placed at #1 on the club charts in Germany. This began Massimo's international DJ career. Massimo has over 65 releases, including 6 albums and has been featured on over 85 successful electronic dance compilations worldwide. His repertoire includes works published by Sony Music, BMG Ariola and has collaborated with Warner Chappell Music and Universal Music for licensing. Massimo Vivona founded Headzone Records in 1995 along with Andy Howard founder of Intergroove Distribution UK. Their focus was the worldwide distribution of vinyl and CD's of some of the most cutting edge electronic music artists. Massimo continues to have a deep appreciation for vinyl and to this day prefers playing his sets on vinyl. "Digital sounds sort of synthetic compared to vinyl, it does not have the sound quality that vinyl does; Vinyl has a much more warm sound and is the grandfather of digital music and should be respected." "Vinyl gives life to the music." Headzone Records is currently operating out of the U.S with the same mission of the distribution of exceptional electronic music on vinyl worldwide. "Special thanks to Pete Namlook for believing in my music RiP, and my brother Andy Howard and All Family of Intergroove for also believing in my creativity." Massimo Vivona.
Mysteries of the Deep Podcast, Chapter CXI by Claudio PRC (@claudioprc). Cover photo courtesy of Candace Price. 'With this mix I wanted to experiment with some of the folk music that I collected during these years of traveling around the globe. I wanted to combine a certain type of traditional world music, mainly Asian, with a raw and enveloping ambient and electro-acoustic background. Inside there are aspects of Mongolian, Japanese, Taiwanese and South Korean music culture, together with field-recordings by Hafdís Bjarnadóttir from Iceland and electronic compositions by Eliane Radigue, Pete Namlook, Carlo Giustini, Loscil and Music For Sleep.
