This emerging, ongoing research project delves into the historical influence of class distinctions on cricket in Greater Manchester, focusing on grassroots cricketers and their connection to their playing kit. With a background as a Salford native, the researcher is intrigued by the interplay of sport and social class, especially through the lens of cricket attire. Leisure time is a realm where symbols can easily shape social status, offering temporary social mobility away from work (Joseph, 1986). This study delves into the cricket kit as a semiotic sign, unveiling hidden narratives about class identity and cricket, primarily in Greater Manchester. It also explores how urban cricket integrates into the local culture. Material methods, particularly material collections (Holmes and Hall, 2020), have significantly influenced the research. The project treats the cricket kit bag as a collection and seeks to reveal personal connections to cricketers' kits, shedding light on how identity and place inform this collection. A reflexive mode of documentary practice is employed to critically examine the researcher's role in shaping and representing the research. This approach involves self-awareness and scrutinizes the researcher's impact on the subject matter and its interpretation by the audience (Nichols, 2017). In summary, this research project aims to offer a diverse urban perspective on the intricate relationship between sport and social class by exploring the class connotations of the traditional cricket kit and its significance to Greater Manchester club cricketers. Danny Orwin is an Early Career Researcher and Fashion Film Lecturer at Manchester Fashion Institute, Manchester Metropolitan University. My research stems from an interest in the role of filmmaking in investigating fashion cultures, and how through exploration of this, themes of place and identity can be revealed.

On this episode of Scran we're fully embracing this time of year and investigating some of the more macabre elements of Scottish food and drink history. Earlier this year Rosalind was lucky enough to attend Whisky & Witches Presents Mythical Beasts, an immersive, mystical, musical whisky tasting produced and presented by Christine Kammerer and Jane Ross. The show touched on the history of women and whisky in Scotland and explained how women who distilled whisky were turned upon by the church and society. These alewives and brewsters were often framed as what we would now recognise as witches. Singer and composer Christine and whisky aficionado Jane who runs The Mother Superior in Leith, join Rosalind to talk all about how women became vilified for distilling and how even today there are challenges around being a woman in the whisky industry. Connotations of witchcraft and herbalism have gone hand in hand for centuries, and delving into the ancient art of herbology is a great way to explore some natural magic in the run up to Halloween. On the second half of the podcast Rosalind chats to Catherine Conway-Payne, author of Herbology- A Psychic Garden Pharmacy, a book being published by The Royal Botanic Garden Edinburgh in the coming weeks, which includes an illustrated guide that brings herbology to life. (rbgeshop.org) Catherine takes us back to a time when insects, frog spawn and basically all sorts was used in medicine and self care. She tells Rosalind all about how, even now, some of the remedies and uses from the past can be found in modern products such as snail slime in beauty products. She also shares some of the lessons to be learnt from the book including some brilliant uses for cleavers, more commonly known as sticky willy. DescriptionAaron Copland was an American composer, composition teacher, writer, and later a conductor of his own and other American music. Take a minute to get the scoop!Fun FactDuring the late 1940s, Copland became aware that Stravinsky and other fellow composers had begun to study Arnold Schoenberg's use of twelve-tone (serial) techniques. After he had been exposed to the works of French composer Pierre Boulez, he incorporated serial techniques into his Piano Quartet (1950), Piano Fantasy (1957), Connotations for orchestra (1961) and Inscape for orchestra (1967). Unlike Schoenberg, Copland used his tone rows in much the same fashion as his tonal material—as sources for melodies and harmonies, rather than as complete statements in their own right, except for crucial events from a structural point of view.About Steven, HostSteven is a Canadian composer living in Toronto. He creates a range of works, with an emphasis on the short-form genre—his muse being to offer the listener both the darker and more satiric shades of human existence. Synopsis By the 1960s, the prevailing trends dictated that modern music should be austere, brainy, complex, and preferably written in the 12-tone “serial” technique developed by Arnold Schoenberg and his pupils. Igor Stravinsky had started writing serial pieces in the 1950s, and even Aaron Copland had a go at writing a 12-tone piece in his “Connotations” for Orchestra, composed for the opening of the New York Philharmonic's new hall at Lincoln Center in 1962. Well, the American composer Henry Cowell was not one to be so easily pigeon-holed. In 1962 he composed an airy little quartet for flute, oboe, cello and harpsichord—a piece very much in the neo-classical style. Cowell then re-scored the harpsichord part for harp at the request of Mary Spalding Sevitzky, the harp-playing wife of the Russian émigré conductor Fabien Sevitzky, to whom the quartet was dedicated. Sevitzky's real last name was Koussevitzky, and, yes, he was the nephew of the famous Russian conductor and music patron Serge Kousseviztky. At his uncle's request, to avoid confusion, Fabien shorted his last name to Sevitzky when he became a conductor in his own right. He led the People's Symphony of Boston in the 1930s before becoming the director of the Indianapolis Symphony from 1937 to 1955. Like his more famous uncle, Fabien Sevitzky was a great champion of American composers. In his later years, he moved to Florida, where he taught and led the University of Miami Symphony. It was in Miami that a distinguished quartet—including Mrs. Sevitzky—premiered Henry Cowell's quartet on today's date in 1963. In the second half, we talk the new 2022 Subaru WRX and why it has the fanboy's all in a tizzy. 271 HP ain't bad, but what happened to the > 300 HP mark we were all expecting? Dealership inventories are still next to nothing, Adam proposes an idea for next year's meets, and we talk about the dwindling weeks left before the weather ruins the rest of 2021's car scene. The Newbies aren't eating this week due to very loud forks from last episode. And due to a busy week of auditions and callbacks for school plays/musicals for both Claire and Phoebe, the Newbies' Machelor conversation didn't take place until Thursday night but better late than never. We think? The episode almost didn't get recorded due to emotions running high on a gloomy rainy evening mainly because the Newbies are still dealing with the big transition of Claire being away at college. All that life-y stuff! Thank goodness we can count on the Bachelor to lift our spirits! This week topics include Chris' 3/4 zip hoodies, which "Daddies" are worthy of "Yum, Daddy", how mob mentality is connected to skinning buffalo during caveman/woman time, the confusing group date of the women literally "fighting for Matt's love" in the ring and how damn good we look in our squirrel suits! And more. :) No special guests but a special shout out to our loyal fans!
We discuss the historical revisionism abundant in the recent reappraisal of Dr Feelgood's 'Wilko-era' and almost getting caught by the rozzers (see 'busted by the filth') for blaring the Just My Luck soundtrack at 3am. We also learn the phrase 'historical revisionism' and abuse the PHUCK out of it. Raimi's Spiderman gets another dashing against the rocks of logic and a new segment rears its head and heads for our rears, it's 'Vaux Pas', which is all about singers cacking it live.
Yes, marketing involves messaging. At the same time, my view is that many less than moral or ethical marketing organizations will run with a service, product or business and bring that client to the public prior to the foundational messaging being in place.S7.E6.N119 Messaging before marketing to create a sound foundation is an authentic messaging and methodology perspective on the impact and the results of creating brand messaging as a first step. Of course, messaging will shift, move and motion, but in my experiences, I have seen both small and large organizations save a fortune when they can work from a messaging palette that is not just pretty words that hit the intention of the client and the marketing company, but also taking into consideration...Identity,Integrity,Oversaturation,Perceptions,Connotations,Comparatives,Competitive,Optics,Temperature,Timing,and more. The way many of the less than moral marketing types run to hype, pressure, spam and quickly shifting the message campaign by campaign, it ends up hurting the brands message, identity and validity. On the other hand, I’ve watched marketers, marketing companies and PR agencies have an easier time being able to reach further at a faster tempo and a reduced cost. And it is not about making the marketer less money, but allowing them to make more for their efforts and marketing strategies when the foundation is there.I feel there are some marketers that understand the aspects of messaging, but a smaller number as a whole.Still, it seems like so many are out there screaming from the mountain tops about how they will create popularity, opportunity and awareness, yet they throw expensive darts at a board or use unrelated metrics and templates to explain what needs to be done without really having a complete understanding of what they are saying. Then many position themselves to take no liability for their spending and their campaigns that were built on the hippest trend that might have no direct relation or application to the specific client. Or worse, the "I had all these big campaigns that worked 10, 20, 30 years ago" and the ever famous "Here is an example of an amazingly successful campaign I did" but that campaign had a budget ten times the size of the person they are pitching and a completely different product. That is why I have come to the perspective of Messaging before Marketing.S7.E6.N119 Messaging before marketing to create a sound foundation. *******The Brand Messaging Podcast Wait What Really OK is a methodical, comical and informational podcast sharing authentic brand messaging, optics approaches & strategies for honorable authority driven businesses. *******Host, Loren Weisman is a Brand Messaging Strategist and Contributor for FSG Messaging and Optics. *Explicit Content -- Curse Words*Matt, a local musician, artist and advocate, is chatting with me today about how the word "sensitive" is associated differently between men and women. For women, being sensitive is normal, but for men, it is perceived as "weakness." With the 'teens in the rearview, the Senior Staff are reflecting on the club tracks which defined the past decade. We're each picking five great club tracks from 2011-2020. Not our faves or personal go-tos, mind you, but the nigh-ubiquitous tracks that shaped the last ten years of life in dark clubs. In addition, we're introducing the third volume of our Telekompilation series of releases featuring tracks by members of our Slack community, which will be available tomorrow on Bandcamp to coincide with Bandcamp's NAACP fundraiser

An interview episode around disability, empowerment, accessibility, self-acceptance and connection. A champion for mental health and disability narratives, Rachael Mole is the Editor in Chief of the City Girl Network, a global social network helping women in their 20s and 30s call their cities ‘home’. As Editor of the City Girl Magazine, an online platform that combines content from all cities to create a one-stop base for finding out everything you need to know about each city. (11:09) Self-acceptance of living life around a disability rather than trying to live as somebody who isn’t disabled (12:30) The struggle of identity and the issue around a ‘non-visible’ disability and the need to either prove that you are or aren’t, including using a blue badge when there isn’t a visible disability (15:20) Connotations of the word ‘disabled’ and the difficulty of owning the word ‘disabled’ or attempting to adapt it to suit a more knowledgeable society (16:45) How society isn’t engineered for disabilities, particularly Rachael’s personal experiences growing up with a disability and how other people viewed it (20:00) The struggle of internalising the pain and the difficulty of putting words to it (22:15) Having role models to aspire to, leading to a change in mentality inspired by female family members (25:45) Viewing the past as traumatic and acknowledging it was traumatic, continually being told that your condition isn’t valid or real, the realisation of this coming with the offer of psychological therapy (27:47) The lack of accessibility for disabled people, even though arguably making businesses more accessible is more profitable. Things such as having braille or large print menus, for example, should be a regular accommodation (35:01) The City Girl Network, getting information out there in an accessible way (36:20) Self-advocacy, how knowledge is empowering and having that knowledge can allow you to make informed decisions for your own health (42:40) The benefits of Open University and the accessibility it gives those who may feel isolated (46:13) How disabled people constantly have to justify why they need certain things, the role that a society lacking in accessibility plays in the perception of disabilities (48:55) Another Bryn appearance, the process of getting employed as a disabled person and how having good intentions behind your questions can help everyone (55:10) The good that can come from being online, The Tired Girl Society, The City Girl Network and how social media helps those who feel isolated not feel alone (56:35) Closing comments Welcome to Dark Coffee, the podcast that starts engaging and approachable conversations around mental health. "Feedback is one of your best tools to meet your goals. Whether in business, leadership, or your personal life. Skillfully used, feedback becomes as an inexpensive and highly effective way to invest in your people. It drives engagement, strong team retention, and constant growth. When it’s handled poorly, feedback becomes your biggest danger. Emotions run high. People take everything personally. Nothing gets done. What was meant to be a source of improvement and engagement is now is a source of tension, frustration and often anxiety. The future belongs to coach-like managers, who focus on people development." These are the words of today's guest, Raf Baron "The F-word Coach". In our conversation, we covered topics like Servant leadership, Self-awareness (also in relationship with children), how to catch yourself and control yourself from exploding (by observing the patterns your body sends before it happens), lack of sleep and its effects, patience, the importance of explaining vs “do it because I said so” – from childhood to management. Fantasty, Science Fiction, Horror all in one exciting magazine! Tonight we will take a look at Speculative Fiction, what it is, what makes it different from other genre's and how it is growing in popularity. We are so pleased to have as our guest, Ms. Patti Hultstrand, a dedicated author, reader and Managing Editor of ConNotations NewsZine. Patti has been writing since the 7th grade when her English teacher took an active interest in her poetry and short story writing. Her first love became science-fiction when she was introduced to the works of Ray Bradbury. Fandom bit her when she actually met the man behind the works in 1987 at a special engagement speech in Phoenix, Arizona. Patti has been involved in the printing/publishing industry for nearly 18 years, including having published her own magazine on Arizona Graphics & Marketing. In 2008 she launched Az Publishing Services and has since published over 50 books. Her own writing has not languished, and her third book in the Chasing Time series was launched in 2011. Patti accepted the appointment to ConNotations in September of 2011, and has not looked back since. Click to view web-site - ConNotations
