This episode we get into a new JAMA Ophthalmology study takes a hard look at pickleball-related eye injuries, and the numbers are… not great. Retinal detachments, hyphemas, orbital fractures, and even open globes are showing up more and more, especially as the sport explodes in popularity among older adults. I break down exactly how these injuries happen, which ones are true emergencies, and why I am once again begging you, politely, but firmly, to wear eye protection while playing pickleball Takeaways: Why pickleball-related eye injuries have surged dramatically in the last few years and why 2024 alone accounted for a huge chunk of them. How a single blunt hit from a pickleball can lead to retinal tears, detachments, or bleeding inside the eye. The most common orbital fracture caused by blunt eye trauma and why age actually changes how dangerous it is. When blood in the eye (hyphema) turns from “watch and wait” into a full-on pants-on emergency. The simplest, cheapest way to avoid becoming an ophthalmology case study: wear safety glasses, especially if your reaction time isn't what it used to be. PicklePod 2.0 is presented by Marek Health. Use our code THEDINK for 10% off your $299 Intake Assessment at https://MarekHealth.com/ Chaos in Minnesota, a brand-new singles court experiment, a potential “pickleball competitor” sport, and one of the wildest medical timeout moments we've seen on tour… this episode has it all. Zane and Nico break down everything that went down at the PPA Minnesota Challenger, including huge upsets, the rise of 14-year-old phenom Cam Chaffin, and why the new narrowed singles court could fundamentally change the way singles pickleball is played. They also debate whether shrinking the court is the right solution, what the PPA is really trying to accomplish with singles, and if we're headed toward a future with fewer (or no) triple crowns. Plus, the guys react to the viral medical timeout involving Andre and Gabe, discuss the unwritten rules of being a good pickleball partner, unpack the buzz around the new sport “Tipti,” and hit Guess My Duper, Pickleball Court, and more. If you like hot takes, rule debates, and behind-the-scenes pro tour stories, you're in the right place.
Brian Montgomery shares one of the most powerful transformation stories in the pickleball community. After reaching nearly 390 pounds and avoiding the doctor out of fear, Brian began with one simple goal: 5,000 steps a day. Step by step, he built momentum, changed his relationship with food, and ultimately lost more than 190 pounds, while also reversing Type 2 diabetes. In this episode, Brian opens up about the emotional moments that made the change real, including seeing how his kids experienced his transformation. He also shares how pickleball became the “sneaky exercise” that brought joy, accountability, and a whole new community into his life.If you're feeling stuck, overwhelmed, or waiting for “next Monday,” Brian's story will inspire you to start today, one small decision at a time.ProDrive Pickleball (affiliate): https://prodrivepickleball.com/?ref=BRIANMONTGOMERY PickleStrong: https://picklestrong.com/https://www.instagram.com/briantmontgomery?igsh=ZXJib2w2MXA0ZmY5TikTok: @brianmontgomery01Music gifted to us by Ian Pedersen: @ianpedersen Contact us: www.lifelessonsfrompickleball@gmail.com Social Media Links:https://www.lifelessonsfrompickleballpodcast.comhttps://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=61557275391316https://www.instagram.com/lifelessonsfrompickleball/https://www.youtube.com/@LifeLessonsFromPickleballPodThanks for listening and you can also watch us on Youtube.

Step into Episode 196 of On The Delo as Delo sits down with Arizona PR powerhouse Melissa DiGianfilippo, founder of Proof Publicity, for an honest conversation about building credibility, navigating crisis communication, and what it really takes to grow a business on your own terms. From firing clients who waste time to leveraging AI for faster content creation without losing the human touch, Melissa pulls back the curtain on how PR actually works—and why relationships still matter more than most entrepreneurs realize. If you're running a business, launching a concept, or trying to get real attention in a noisy market, this episode is packed with practical insights you can use right now.Hear how Melissa went from a 25-year-old agency owner in 2008 to running a lean, intentional PR firm that only works with clients she believes in—and how she's learned to be ruthless with feedback, flexible with change, and crystal clear on what moves the needle. She breaks down why PR isn't just press releases, how newsjacking gets more coverage than any planned pitch, and what it takes to onboard a new client (spoiler: it starts with 90 minutes of deep questions). The conversation also dives into how Arizona's hospitality scene is exploding right now, from downtown Phoenix popping off to brand collaborations becoming the fastest way to expand your audience, and why authentic storytelling beats viral gimmicks every time.Melissa also gets candid about balancing motherhood with two daughters (10 and 13) while building a business that feels like a third child, why she pays for help so she can stay focused, and how she's unlearning some pandemic-era fears around being direct with her team. You'll hear about crisis situations she's handled—from student housing disasters to media showing up at a property's door with cameras—and why staying calm, responsive, and human is the only way through. From her morning news podcast ritual to hiring blunt Gen Z employees who don't want fluff, Melissa's approach is equal parts strategic and refreshingly real.Chapter Guide Timestamps:0:00 – 2:48 – Intro, Birthday Coincidence, and Built Different Community Overview2:49 – 5:09 – Americano Event Recap and the Power of Networking with Purpose5:10 – 8:06 – Origin Story: Wisconsin to Kent State, PR Degree, and the Professor Who Changed Everything8:07 – 12:40 – First Job at Martz Agency, Learning Ruthlessness, and Starting a Business at 2512:41 – 14:20 – Why She Started Proof Publicity and What the Name Really Means14:21 – 16:53 – Why Women Excel in PR, Listening Over Ego, and Crisis Control Stories16:54 – 20:52 – Newsjacking, Media Relationships, and Why the Landscape Has Changed20:53 – 25:02 – Being a Good Boss, Patience, Directness, and Learning from Gen Z25:03 – 26:47 – Balancing Motherhood, Business, and Paying for Help Without Apology26:48 – 29:53 – Arizona Hospitality Boom, Downtown Phoenix, and Brand Collaborations29:54 – 32:19 – How AI is Changing PR, Building Client Projects in ChatGPT, and Staying Human32:20 – 36:08 – The Onboarding Process: 90 Minutes of Deep Questions and Delivering Results36:09 – 38:18 – Firing Clients Who Waste Time and Protecting Media Relationships38:19 – 40:45 – Hobbies, Travel, Pickleball, Peloton, and Being a Picky Eater40:46 – 43:10 – Rapid Fire: Pizza vs. Sushi, Wine vs. Coffee, PR Myths, and Big Wins43:11 – 47:44 – More Rapid Fire, Music Preferences, and Episode Wrap-UpIf this conversation about PR, building intentional businesses, and navigating Arizona's hospitality boom resonated with you, hit Subscribe for more deep dives on business, relationships, and growth. Frank's pickleball career is off to a rough start, but what can he learn from Naomi Osaka and Jannik Sinner after the pair caused controversies at the Australian Open? NFL Teams are making quick appointments to fill head coaching positions, but Eddie isn't convinced that Robert Saleh or Mike McCarthy were the right hires. And we make our previews and predictions for the NFC and AFC Championship games. Can the Broncos find a way past the Patriots with a backup quarterback? And will the Seahawks be able to stop the Rams and the best offense in the NFL? Plus, Indiana wins the College Football National Championship, Eddie thinks athletes can relax about making money, and 'The Pitt' season 2 builds towards a climax.
Jann, Caitlin, and Sarah start with a little positivity with some personal updates. Jann is recording from Reykjavik, working on her book, while Caitlin recounts heartwarming moments from her son's playdates, and Sarah shares her excitement about winning a Canadian Choice Award for Women in Media Network. The trio also touches on Alzheimer's Awareness Month, discussing a unique restaurant in Tokyo that employs servers with dementia, creating a space for empathy and understanding. Caitlin details the concept of 'choppelganger,' a humorous take on lookalikes, and the amusing experiences of being mistaken for someone else. The trio also dives into a Reddit thread discussing common misconceptions and habits that are actually universal. Does the sun make you sneeze? Are you someone who doesn't get goosebumps? The also hosts dive into the surprisingly dangerous world of seemingly harmless sports, sharing personal anecdotes; Jann recounts her painful experience with pickleball and even feeding the deer in her yard. Finally, they consider how they'd feel if they were mislead to believe someone who had hair was actually bald, discussing a man who was sued by his wife for being secretly bald. Would you sue? Use our code THEDINK for 10% off your $299 Intake Assessment at https://MarekHealth.com/ On this episode of The PicklePod, we break down the biggest story in the sport right now: Anna Leigh Waters signing with Nike—why it's bigger than any paddle deal, what it means for the PPA, and how it could completely reshape pickleball's place in pop culture. Is she officially the face of the sport? And who's actually happier about the deal than Anna Leigh herself? Plus, Nico returns for episode two and wastes zero time making enemies. We dive into bold 2026 over/under predictions, including: - Will Ben Johns ever win another singles gold? - How many matches will Anna Leigh actually lose this year? - Are contract terminations finally slowing down? - Can Jack Sock (or any former tennis star) win a PPA title? We also react to YouTube and Twitter comments roasting the show, debate pickleball media beefs, preview the Masters, blind-rank the best tournaments in the world, and somehow end up talking about fist fights, venison sticks, and why pickleball Twitter might be the worst place on the internet. As always, it's pickleball analysis you won't hear anywhere else—equal parts hot takes, insider perspective, and chaos.

Next time you see a piggy bank at a Goodwill store, buy it! Tara Reid's claim that someone spiked her drink doesn't make any sense. Pickleball has taken over America, and I give you the unhappiest workers in the country and where they live. What jobs are harder than most people think, and details on the latest concept is that a college degree simply isn't worth the money or the time. An 86-year-old man got a ticket for spitting, plus the latest in airlines is they are thinking of putting seats in the wings of the plane, and I'm not kidding. If you steal a car and then abandon it, make sure to get all your shit out of it before you leave it. A man paid crazy money for the Ohtani home run ball, and a guy was sitting in the waiting area to board his plane when he caught on fire. A company was sending out end of the year bonuses when they accidentally sent one employee a check for $87,000 dollars, and the employee refuses to give it back. We share a list of all the items that were pulled out of people's asses in 2025, which is a great way to END things. See what I did there? We take a look at what the year ahead of us might bring, plus a good round of songs I'm embarrassed to admit that I love, and we take a quick look at wildcard weekend. Don't judge…I'm old!

They also talk about the upcoming CNPL draft combine, what teams are looking for, and how the Toronto United tournament hosted by APA fits into the bigger picture of growing the game. If you're into pickleball, whether as a player, fan, or someone curious about the business side of the sport, this episode is for you.

Enjoyed this episode or the podcast in general? Send me a text message:Imagine launching a jet from a space smaller than a pickleball court and sending it 2,100 nautical miles to jam, scout, and fight—without a pilot on board. That's XBat: a VTOL, fighter-powered, AI-driven aircraft that challenges everything we assume about runways, range, and risk.We walk through why a GE F100 fighter engine is a game-changer in an uncrewed jet: it delivers thrust for high-altitude endurance and supersonic dashes, plus the electrical power to run an embedded electronic warfare suite on par with a two-seat Growler. We unpack how full 3D thrust vectoring enables precise vertical recovery and extreme maneuvering with no worries about G-LOC, and why a protected launch system turns improvised pads and ship decks into instant micro airfields. At 55,000 feet, XBat sips fuel and supercharges missile performance; when it needs to, it accelerates, shoots, and slips back to a low-observable profile. The autonomy is the quiet revolution. Shield AI's Hivemind, proven in GPS-denied and comms-degraded combat environments, fuses radar, passive sensors, and EO feeds to plan, adapt, and execute with mission intent. Operating as a swarm, multiple XBats multiply jamming effects, create false signatures, and force adversaries into bad choices. That's where manned-uncrewed teaming shines: an F-35 can orchestrate from standoff as four or five XBats scout, suppress air defenses, engage fighters, and keep jamming after expending munitions. Internally, XBat carries four AMRAAMs for stealth; externally, it scales to smart bombs, cruise missiles, and anti-ship weapons for missions from SEAD to maritime strike. This isn't pilot replacement; it's pilot amplification. By shifting risk to autonomous jets and dispersing launch sites inside standard shipping containers, airpower becomes mobile, layered, and far harder to kill. If you care about next-gen air combat, distributed basing, and the future of F-35 teaming, this deep dive connects the hardware, autonomy, and tactics that make XBat more than another drone—it's a blueprint for resilient air dominance.Enjoyed the conversation?

Rick is joined by Daren Hornig of CourtsApp. CourtsApp, the first AI-powered marketing and booking platform built to modernize court marketing and reservations across the red-hot racquet sports industry, has announced its official launch throughout the New York tri-state area. Founded by New York entrepreneur and real estate developer Daren Hornig and creative executive Kate Daggett, CourtsApp is designed to eliminate the frustration and friction that have long plagued the tennis and pickleball communities, making it now seamless and easy to reserve a court in any racquet and paddle sport. CourtsApp also helps facilities grow. By making every court discoverable and bookable, the platform turns unused inventory into real revenue and delivers a steady stream of high-intent players to clubs. With seamless integrations with existing court management systems, full control over pricing and rules, CourtsApp gives operators a simple and efficient way to fill courts and expand their reach. CourtsApp provides its software to the facilities for free and makes a commission on the courts it books. Currently live to players with more than 1,500 courts across 150+ facilities already signed on throughout New York, New Jersey, and Connecticut, CourtsApp will expand from Maine to Florida by the first quarter of 2026 before expanding market-by-market as club density increases. Additional play-in markets, including Southern California, Texas, and the Pacific Northwest, are expected to come online throughout 2026. Clubs such as the John McEnroe Academy's flagship location at Sportime Randalls Island, Pickleball America, Padel Haus, all Sportime Pickleball locations and more are currently available for players to reserve courts. “CourtsApp was born from pure frustration,” said Hornig, Chief Executive Officer of CourtsApp and an avid tennis and pickleball player. “For years, me and my friends struggled to find open courts in real time and near where I wanted to play. We wanted a simple, reliable solution that matched how people already book restaurants, travel, or fitness. Now, with CourtsApp, they finally have one.” Hornig called CourtsApp the “OpenTable for courts. The Expedia of racquet sports,” and added, “Beyond convenience, CourtsApp connects people; helping friends meet to play, helping communities stay active, and making racquet sports more accessible to everyone. It is also a critical marketing tool for facility owners. Most operators lack the funds and expertise to market effectively in today’s complex digital environment, and CourtsApp does this for them and more. Our goal is to get players on the courts and help clubs keep their courts full. It's really a win-win scenario for all.” Daggett, CourtsApp's Chief Marketing Officer, resides in Connecticut and, like Hornig, is among the 25.7 million Americans who played tennis in 2024, according to the most recent statistics reported by the United States Tennis Association (USTA), which was an all-time high and a surge of 1.9 million more than 2023. Pickleball has been consistently named the fastest-growing sport in the nation with an estimated 22.7 million players, an increase of more than 45 percent over the previous year. There are more than 68,000 dedicated pickleball courts in the U.S. “Racquet sports are booming, but the technology that supports them has not kept up,” commented Daggett. “Players expect the same ease they get everywhere else, and clubs need tools that help them grow. CourtsApp brings both sides together in a modern, intuitive experience that gets more people on the court, more often.” CourtsApp is also forging integrations with the leading court-management systems nationwide, enabling instant court bookings at participating facilities. CourtsApp is continuing to roll out integrations with leading pickleball and racquet-sport technology platforms. One of the first is DUPR, the pickleball rating system used by more than 1.6 million players and 8,000 clubs. This integration will allow players to bring their verified rating directly into the CourtsApp ecosystem and for players to book courts within DUPR. A Win for Both Players and Clubs For clubs, CourtsApp functions as a free, performance-based marketing channel. Facilities can join at no cost, with CourtsApp earning a commission on court time bookings. For players, CourtsApp provides: Easy search functions across tennis, pickleball, padel facilities, as well as table tennis, squash, badminton and racquetball Real-time booking confirmations Map View Secure payment via Stripe and Apple Pay A familiar, “OpenTable-style” user experience Players and clubs can learn more or join the platform at CourtsApp.com and download CourtsApp from the Apple App Store for iOS and Google Play Store for Android. Also… A Smarter Match: CourtsApp and DUPR Form Partnership To Power Verified Pickleball Play Everywhere Local Courts to Access National-Level Ranking Infrastructure, Building a More Connected Pickleball Ecosystem Where Every Match Counts CourtsApp also announced a strategic partnership with DUPR (Dynamic Universal Pickleball Rating), the global standard for pickleball ratings and verified match data. Together, the companies are building a more connected ecosystem for racquet sports, one where every match can count toward verified player progress and help clubs attract more engaged, repeat players. DUPR and CourtsApp share a common mission: reduce friction for players and facilities by connecting access, performance, and community in one integrated environment. “DUPR has become the gold standard for measuring skill in pickleball, and together we're making that progress visible right where the game happens, on the court,” said Daren Hornig, CourtsApp founder and CEO. “Clubs are the engine of that growth, and as CourtsApp continues expanding from the NY Tristate area into new markets in 2026, our work with more than 150 clubs and 1,500 courts shows how verified play helps clubs boost utilization and revenue without changing how they operate.” Through this partnership, CourtsApp will integrate DUPR's universal rating system directly into its platform, enabling players to: • Connect DUPR accounts through CourtsApp • Book courts on DUPR, powered by CourtsApp's real-time availability engine • Record match results automatically, creating verified rating histories • Receive enhanced matchmaking and performance insights over time For racquet sport facilities, the CourtsApp-DUPR collaboration unlocks new opportunities to: • Seamlessly integrate CourtsApp's AI-driven marketing and booking tools across 8,000-plus DUPR partner facilities nationwide • Host DUPR-eligible matches and Open Plays • Tap into DUPR's 1.5 million engaged pickleball players to drive visibility and participation • Leverage data-driven insights to boost pickleball court utilization and player retention • Drive incremental revenue as DUPR-engaged players seek more opportunities to play and log verified matches DUPR CEO Tio Machado said that CourtsApp is building the digital infrastructure that helps the sport grow. “We're excited to align on the shared mission of connecting players and verified play everywhere,” he said. Hornig added that when CourtsApp evaluates partnerships, the focus is on partnering with the very best companies in their respective spaces. “The alignment with DUPR is a trifecta as they work with facilities and players, which is the exact audience that CourtsApp focuses on, and within the CourtsApp platform we're able to add DUPR's rating to our expanding network of players,” he explained. Integration work is already underway, with new functionality expected to launch in an upcoming product release. The partnership represents a pivotal step toward a unified racquet sport ecosystem that connects access, performance, community, and technology while helping clubs grow with rising demand for verified play. DUPR announced it was partnering with USA Pickleball as the official ratings system of all USA Pickleball-owned events. CourtsApp is available for free in the northeastern United States with more than 150 facilities and 1,500 courts onboarded and accepting bookings for tennis, pickleball and padel courts. CourtsApp will extend from Maine to Florida by the first quarter of 2026 before expanding market-by-market as club density increases. Additional play-in markets, including Southern California, Texas, and the Pacific Northwest, are expected to come online throughout 2026.

I spent three and a half hours taking pro pickleball lessons and walked away realizing how many of the problems people are having in business have nothing to do with talent, luck, or effort. They come down to mindset, fundamentals, and who's pushing you to show up. In this episode, Lori and I break down 4 lessons that translate directly to business and leadership, why opportunities don't go to the hardest workers, why fundamentals always scale better than raw talent, and why staring at the scoreboard instead of working the plan is keeping so many people stuck. Get ready to be more prepared, more disciplined, and surrounded by the right people. HIGHLIGHTS Why assuming the opportunity is coming to you changes everything. The mindset shift that makes you faster to act and win. How two men in their 70s destroyed talent with fundamentals. The pickleball lesson that changed how we think about business. Why staring at the score never grows your business. Why accountability partners matter more than motivation. How the right people force you into action when you'd normally procrastinate. In this episode, the world's #1 pickleball player, Ben Johns, joins Anders Varner, Doug Larson, Travis Mash, and Dr. Mike Lane to unpack what it really takes to stay at the top of one of the fastest-growing sports on the planet. Ben walks through the insane travel schedule, the perpetual in-season demands, and the growing physical toll of a sport played in deep athletic stances, high-velocity lateral movements, and multi-hour tournament days. For the past year, Ben has partnered with RAPID Health Optimization to build a data-driven system around sleep, recovery, hydration, nutrition, and personalized strength and conditioning giving him a competitive edge in a sport where consistency and longevity are becoming just as important as pure skill. The team breaks down how RAPID reverse-engineered the physiology of pickleball by analyzing metabolic demands, movement patterns, travel stress, and tournament structure. Ben shares what has changed the most: HRV-driven sleep routines, hydration and electrolyte protocols, rapid-turnaround nutrition systems during six-day competition blocks, and gym programming that prioritizes leg strength, acceleration, deceleration, rotational power, and the ability to repeatedly produce peak output with minimal fatigue. With only an eight-week "off-season" each year, Ben's entire training plan now revolves around precision dosing of fatigue, auto-regulation, and strategic recovery backed by data from Oura, lab analysis (blood, stool, saliva, urine) and the RAPID coaching team. Finally, the conversation moves into the strategic side of dominance: pattern recognition, the metagame of adjustments, and the ability to keep learning in a young sport where the rules of mastery are still being written. Ben explains how having a full-stack performance team allows him to focus on playing, developing new skills, and outlasting opponents who aren't managing sleep, travel, workload, or recovery with the same level of precision. If you want an inside look at how the best player in the world trains, prepares, and stays healthy and how RAPID Health Optimization builds elite longevity systems for professional athletes this episode is a must-listen.
