The US Open is in full swing, and injuries have knocked out some of the biggest athletes in the men's tournament. But there's no shortage of star power on the women's side: Filipina tennis sensation Alex Eala is on fire, inspiring “Eala-mania” all over the world. To get us up to speed on the tournament, we chat with Giri Nathan, senior correspondent at the tennis outlet The Second Serve. After that, we attempt to answer one of the inescapable questions of our time: Why are so many people obsessed with pickleball? Clare Frank was a firefighter for more than 30 years. When she retired, she stumbled into the game. At first, she didn't quite get the hype — but like so many retirees who came before her, Clare quickly became captivated by pickleball. In her latest book, “Just One More Game: A Pickleball Quest,” Clare dives headfirst into the world of pickleball to try to figure out how it has become the fastest-growing sport in the United States. Spoiler alert: It's not just your grandmother's game anymore.Show Notes Just One More Game: A Pickleball Quest by Clare Frank How Pickleball Got Its Name | USA Pickleball Wanna play? Why does Old Dominion continue to win at such a high level in college tennis?ODU Women's Tennis Head Coach Dom Manilla and ODU Men's Tennis Head Coach Dominik Mueller join Aaron and Mike for a wide-ranging conversation about the championship culture both programs have built — and what it takes to sustain that success as college athletics changes around them. The two Doms take us inside their different approaches to recruiting, roster construction, NIL and the transfer portal, including why Mueller believes the portal has actually opened doors for ODU to land better freshmen. They also tackle a much bigger issue facing college athletics: tennis programs around the country being eliminated as athletic departments face increasing financial pressure. Manilla explains why winning, fundraising, community support and running a first-class program have never been more important.Plus:

Apparently church growth now includes mergers and acquisitions.A large church in our area just spent several million dollars to acquire another church property and turn it into its newest campus. We're talking about what happened, what it means for the local church landscape, and why the whole thing feels just a little weird.Meanwhile, Safety Harbor suddenly has a LOT of empty space now that the preschool has moved out. And, as you might expect, everyone has an idea for what to do with it. Offices? Classrooms? Community space? New ministries? Pickleball courts? Okay, hopefully not pickleball courts. Andrew is learning that empty rooms don't stay hypothetical for very long when church people know they exist.Over at Lakeview, it was Move Up Sunday as kids and students moved into their new classes and ministries, officially signaling that summer is basically over. Both churches are now in full-on back-to-school mode. Calendars are filling, ministries are restarting, families are finding their routines again, and pastors everywhere are pretending they're ready for fall. It's mergers, acquisitions, empty buildings, moving kids, and figuring out what to do with the space God gives you, whether you paid several million dollars for it or just unexpectedly got the keys back.

Zane screamed at Casey Diamond and the internet had thoughts. We're not letting it slide — Zane walks through exactly what happened in the Palm Beach playoff match, whether he regrets it, and where the line on screaming actually is (spoiler: he found it by crossing it). Then we read the meanest comments the internet had for him, rank pickleball's biggest beefs, debate the Memes of Pickleball controversy, break down every MLP playoff series and the seeding picks, and draft fast food items to build an MLP team. Stick around to the end. Cameron Boltes joins us to share the story of his son Solomon and the memorial pickleball courts being built in his honor in eastern North Carolina. Send us Fan MailHoi An is undeniably touristy. But after a few days wandering its lantern-lit streets, eating our way through some of the most unique food we found in Vietnam, and soaking up its beautiful old-world charm, I came away thinking: this place is touristy for a reason. In this episode, we explore Hoi An's incredible food scene, from bánh bèo and white rose dumplings to cao lầu and endless cups of MOT herbal tea, while also navigating crowded markets, aggressive haggling, a somewhat questionable beach adventure, and some delightfully awkward interviews with local students. Come along to one of Vietnam's most popular destinations—and find out why, despite the crowds, I absolutely think Hoi An is worth the hype. Christine Hobson retired at 60. Two days later, she ran her first marathon. She has run more than 100 since. Every continent. A world record in Antarctica. And when she describes it, she does not lead with the marathons. She leads with what the first one taught her: she had been underestimating herself the whole time. That is the topic this week.We do this as humans. We try something, it does not go well, and we file it away as evidence. Enough of those and we start building a case against ourselves. I hear it constantly when I suggest pickleball to somebody. I'm too old. I'm too out of shape. I'm too late. Fill in the blank. There is a second story in the episode that lands the same point from a different angle. A woman on a date says, almost by accident, that in another universe she would be a stand-up comedian. She had never said it out loud before. Her date asks the obvious question back: why not in this universe? She gave him the list of reasons. He kept peeling them back. She became a stand-up comedian. So here is the pickleball version. You have a picture of yourself out on the court. The player who sees the game better, who puts the ball where they meant to put it, who feels good walking on. If that player is a 3.5 and you are a 2.5, there is nothing structural stopping you. Not tomorrow. Maybe not in six months. But in eighteen months, with a clear plan and a clear sense of what you are working on, absolutely. To be sure, some things really do impede you. Bad information impedes you. Bad guidance impedes you. Coming at the game from a purely technical angle, where you need to know the exact paddle angle and exactly where each toe points, impedes you, because that is not how the brain learns to play. Those are real.Everything else on your list, you put there. And to be clear, none of this is a directive. Nobody needs to reach a level. If you are happy playing exactly the way you play now, that is a fine place to be. But if there is a version of you out ahead that you actually want, do not be the one blocking the path.**The riff: two ways to handle adversity**Missing a shot is an adverse event. Small on the scale of adversity, but real inside the game.First situation. My partner and I are stacked. The return of serve comes back hard, with spin, into the far corner. He has to cover a lot of ground and hit a very difficult backhand. He catches the top of the net. Good effort, hard shot, no issue. He apologizes. I tell him there is nothing to apologize for, that it was a great return and a tough ask from that position, and that I am not upset. He apologizes again. Then he says it: I shouldn't miss that.He processed it the same way today that he processed it a few years ago. It is a loop, and it costs him something every time.Second situation. Last game of the day, court one, score somewhere in the fours, evenly matched. My focus wandered off. I do not know where it went, but it left. I missed a few shots I do not normally miss.I could have hunkered down and demanded that focus come back. But there is no switch to flip. Ebbs and flows in attention are the most natural thing in the world. They happen to full-time professional athletes in every sport. So I told my partner: pick me up, I'll be back in a few minutes. And I was. We lost that game, but we tightened it up and made it competitive down the stretch.Same category of event. Two very different relationships with it. The second one gives you a calmer mind, and a calmer mind sees the court better and hits the next ball better. That is not a soft benefit. That is the mechanism.**Extra coaching tip**Notice who your partner is apologizing to. When a player says sorry after a difficult miss, they are usually not apologizing to you. They are apologizing to the version of themselves who was supposed to make that shot. That is why reassurance from you does not land. You cannot answer an expectation you did not set. What you can do is name the difficulty of the shot out loud, once, and then move on to the next point with your own body language completely neutral. You are not arguing with their standard. You are just declining to feed it.Be well,Tony

Chris and Amy booked a last-minute week in Bora Bora that would have cost over $20,000, almost entirely on points. They break down how it came together, why they chose Bora Bora over Fiji, the Marriott award search quirk that hid available rooms, flying business class in both directions by mixing two airlines, and using card travel credits on the inter-island flights. Then, three nights in, they decided to abandon the deal and pay more to switch resorts. They compare and rank the major Bora Bora resorts, weigh points versus cash, and explain what makes French Polynesia one of the easiest long-haul trips from the West Coast. Megan shares her journey from first picking up a paddle to competing professionally, while reflecting on the friendships, family memories, and sense of community that keep players coming back. She also discusses how Sandals and Beaches Resorts have embraced the sport's rapid growth through on-resort clinics, official partnerships, and year-round programming. Nonetheless, I am happy to have at the very least monetized our misery. Comment down below your take on this situation, unless you have anything good to say about my husband. Are muscles deep... or shallow? In this episode of Deep & Shallow, Debbie and Jamie the Great tackle a topic that's far more complicated than it first appears. They dive into the pressure women face around body image, the rise of GLP-1 weight loss medications, the difference between pursuing health versus chasing thinness, and why strength matters so much more than the number on the scale. The conversation gets personal as they share stories about disordered eating, body dysmorphia, aging, Hollywood beauty standards, and how fitness has become a form of mental health—not punishment. Then, true to Deep & Shallow fashion, they lighten things up with Jersey Shore memories, fly traps, Love Island, hula hoops, ballet classes, pickleball, and why trying something new can reconnect you with the person you used to be.Whether you're navigating menopause, rebuilding your confidence, or simply trying to stay healthy in a world obsessed with being skinny, this episode is an honest reminder that taking care of yourself isn't vanity—it's longevity. In this episode we discuss:The cultural obsession with being thinGLP-1 medications and the changing conversation around weight lossBody image and body dysmorphiaMidlife wellness and women's healthThe mental health benefits of exerciseWhy doing hard things first changes your dayHeart health wake-up callsReturning to childhood passions like danceCreativity, movement, and getting out of your comfort zoneJersey Shore nostalgia and lifelong friendshipsPickleball, hula hoops, ballet, and finding joy in movementIf you've ever looked in the mirror and wondered whether you're chasing health—or perfection—this conversation is for you and your bestie! You put a filter on your kitchen sink. You don't want debris getting into your plumbing. So here's the question a Buddhist monk asked on a podcast recently: how many of us have a filter for our mind? This week we look at filtration. Not the sink kind. The kind that decides which pickleball information gets into your head and which information gets blocked at the door. There is a lot of content out there. Some of it is wrong. Some of it is incomplete. Some of it is fine, but not for you, not right now. Without a filter, all of it goes down the drain and clogs up your thinking.Tony walks through how to build a filtration system: start with a short list of trusted sources, then strengthen the filter as your understanding of the game grows. He also flags one of the easiest filters you can use today — what to do when the coaching starts with "this is what I do."Then in the riff: "What level is this camp for?" It sounds like a reasonable question. Tony makes the case that it is actually a filter working against you. We all play the same game. Same court. Same rules. Same fundamentals. Serve, return, volleys. The player who executes those better wins. That is true at 2.5 and it is true on the pro tour, which is why Anna Leigh Waters does not sleep on her fundamentals.Don't chase magic. There is no drawer of magic shots.Mentioned in this episode:Tap Into Your Flow — free 5-week coaching series, in progress now. THE DINK MOVIE REVIEW John McEnroe once said “I'm not a convert to pickleball, I think it sucks”.
