Pickleball is the fastest growing sport in America. It may also be the most hated. Tennis and basketball players are complaining about losing court space because of an “invasion” of pickleballers. Residents are losing sleep because of the incessant noise. Fights over pickleball have led to a slew of petitions, calls to the police, and even lawsuits. So why do pickleball players love this sport so much? Just how annoying is it to everyone else? And what will it take for everyone to just get along? Producer Felix Poon visits one of the most popular courts in Boston to see how the drama is unfolding there. This episode was originally reported in 2025. Van Buren, Maine, had a problem no town wants: it owned more than half of its downtown buildings through tax acquisition. When Luke Dyer became town manager after a long career in law enforcement, he was facing vacant storefronts, deteriorating buildings, flood-damaged land, and a downtown that had lost traffic after the port of entry moved away from Main Street. In this episode, Dyer shares how Van Buren began putting buildings back into productive use, turning an underused ice rink into pickleball courts, growing trees for Main Street in a community greenhouse, and converting its old town office into a business incubator. Host: Darryl S. Chutka, M.D. Guest: Joshua M. Romero, M.D. Pickleball has become one of the fastest growing sports in the U.S., especially among older adults. This rapid rise in popularity has also resulted in a significant number and variety of sports-related injuries. It's important for primary care clinicians to recognize the most common injuries and their risk factors. We should also discuss preventive strategies with our patients to reduce their risk of injury. Is pickleball so dangerous or do the many injuries result from the popularity of the sport? What health conditions often seen in older individuals place them at increased risk of injury? What are some practical preventive strategies we can recommend to our patients who are planning to start playing the sport? I'll get answers to these questions from my guest, Dr. Joshua Romero, a sports medicine physician in the Department of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation at the Mayo Clinic. Connect with us! Then St. Louis Shock star Kate Fahey joins to talk her MVP weekend (top Player Impact Rating in the field), the art of playing "squishy" on defense, her breakdown of Sofia Sewing and Tina Pisnik's breakout run, and an honest conversation about on-court anxiety, working with a sports psychologist, and the line between competitive fire and burnout. Plus: Zane and Nico draft an all-time Blue Card team, and the crew tries to guess a duper's rating.

Rob Nelson interviews Greg Roeder of Fort Collins, Colorado, who shares how he built a thriving real estate business by creating community around his passions rather than relying on traditional prospecting. A pivotal moment came when he invited a struggling homeowner to join a pickleball game, helping him realize he could offer more than real estate services—he could create meaningful connections. Greg began organizing what he calls strategic gatherings and signature events, including pickleball leagues, wellness events, coffee tastings, and other experiences that bring people together around shared interests. These gatherings naturally deepen relationships, generate referrals, and make live flow inevitable. He complements these events with highly targeted content and newsletters designed specifically for his ideal clients. Over three years, Greg grew his business from roughly $12 million in volume to $40 million while becoming one of the most recognized luxury agents in his market. His story demonstrates that when you build authentic community and create value beyond real estate, business growth follows naturally. Key Takeaways The best prospecting often starts with your passions, not traditional networking Strategic gatherings create natural opportunities for relationship building and referrals People connect more deeply through shared experiences than through real estate conversations Content should be designed for your ideal client, not for the masses Combining authentic live flow with targeted auto flow creates powerful momentum Building community positions you as the trusted hub of a growing network Memorable Quotes "I could be more than somebody who just lists and sells houses." "Stop trying to serve everyone." "You need to find your people." "The first time I'd laughed in six months." "Why are we waiting for somebody else to create it?" What happens when a lifelong inventor falls in love with pickleball and decides the sport deserves something better? In this episode, we talk with Mae Romero, an inventor, entrepreneur, lifelong problem solver, and founder of Okto Pickleball. Mae shares how growing up on a farm and learning to weld at just seven years old helped shape her confidence, creativity, and ability to figure things out for herself. She has spent her life building things, both literally and creatively, and over the years has taken multiple products from concept to national retail. When pickleball entered her life, it sparked a whole new chapter. For Mae, invention and pickleball have a lot in common — both require resilience, adaptability, and the willingness to keep solving problems in front of you.Mae talks about how her love for the game led her to create Okto, a brand focused on gear that is not only functional, but intentional and empowering for pickleball players. She shares what it looks like to move from seeing a need to designing a solution, and how her life as an inventor has shaped the way she approaches the game. Along the way, we explore creativity, entrepreneurship, confidence, and what it means to trust your own ideas enough to bring them into the world. This is an inspiring conversation about pickleball, invention, entrepreneurship, women in business, creativity, resilience, product design, Okto Pickleball, innovation, confidence, and the life lessons that remind us to trust ourselves, stay curious, and keep building what we wish existed.https://oktogear.com/

When was the last time you started a new job? Do you remember what the onboarding was like? The paperwork, the benefits forms, the direct deposit setup, the login credentials that didn’t work yet? Today there’s a whole industry built around making that whole process way less painful — and my first guest today runs one of those companies, right here in Baton Rouge. Craig Broome is a Baton Rouge native who thought he was going to law school. He got interested in employment law at LSU and ended up in human resources instead — landing an HR role at a chemical plant during his senior year. That turned into a career, which eventually led him to a Baton Rouge HR and payroll company called ESS. And then in 2016, he partnered with the Sternberg family to launch Highflyer HR. Along the way Craig served in the Marine Corps Reserve from 1994 to 2001 as a heavy machine gunner — which is not a detail you expect from someone who runs a payroll company, but there it is. Highflyer processes payroll for roughly 25,000 employees a week. It serves about 500 clients across 40 states, and has grown from Craig working alone to a 25-person team. The company works with businesses from five employees to over 5,000 — their range includes everything from restaurants and retailers to fire departments and industrial operations. Craig says the goal was never to just sell payroll software. It was to figure out where a business’s people systems were breaking down and fix theme. Another way people connect and gather is over their love of sports. I'm thinking of pickleball. If you haven’t played it yet, you probably know someone who can’t stop talking about it. Xander Triay is the Founder of Baton Rouge’s only pickleball facility - it’s called Electric Pickle. Electric Pickle opened in late 2025 with six outdoor pickleball courts. Open play sessions regularly draw 30 to 40 people. The venue welcomes about a thousand visitors a month. The restaurant and bar menu is built around a few signature items, including a roast beef po-boy based on a family recipe and, yes, house-made pickles. Xander grew up on the Northshore, near Fontainebleau State Park, and spent almost ten years with Chick-fil-A — in leadership roles, working on corporate initiatives, traveling the country to help open new locations. His plan was to eventually run his own store. But that path required a lot of travel, and Xander wanted to stay closer to family. His sister is in Baton Rouge, and when developer Dyke Nelson reached out about a new concept coming to Electric Depot in Mid City, Xander was in. Xander will tell you he’s not really a pickleball person — he’s an operations person. But he’s pretty clear about what Electric Pickle is actually for: it’s a neighborhood place that happens to have courts, not a sports facility that happens to have a bar. Out to Lunch is recorded live over lunch at Mansurs on the Boulevard. Welcome back to the podcast! Today's episode started with something that might seem small but actually sparked a much bigger conversation. Melissa recently hit a milestone that she's incredibly proud of—51 consecutive weeks of completing at least one workout every single week. Almost an entire year of consistency. And while the achievement itself is worth celebrating, what really got us talking was what it reveals about how meaningful change actually happens in our lives. For years, Melissa has worked out on and off, but this season has felt different. Part of that comes from seeing the results of consistent effort—not just physically, but in everyday life. Feeling stronger. Having more energy. Being able to play volleyball, jump, run, and keep up with our kids. It's not really about a workout app or even fitness itself. It's about seeing firsthand what happens when you commit to something and keep showing up, especially on the days when you don't feel like it. That led us into a conversation about a phrase we hear all the time: "must be nice." You know the one. Someone shares a vacation, a business success, a healthy relationship, a fitness goal, or an accomplishment, and the immediate reaction is, "Well, that must be nice." The problem is that phrase usually shuts down curiosity. It assumes the result simply happened to someone instead of asking what sacrifices, discipline, consistency, or effort may have gone into creating it. And if we're not careful, it can keep us stuck focusing on what we don't have instead of learning from people who have created something we admire. One of the ideas we explored is that every achievement leaves clues. Instead of asking, "Why do they have that and I don't?" a more useful question might be, "What did they do to create that?" Whether it's health, finances, relationships, faith, or personal growth, the formula is surprisingly similar. Get clear on what you want, commit to it, and stay consistent long enough to see results. It sounds simple, but most of the things we admire in others are often built quietly through daily actions that nobody sees. At the end of the day, this episode is really about personal responsibility and possibility. We all have moments where comparison creeps in or where it feels easier to become frustrated by someone else's success. But what if instead of being threatened by it, we allowed ourselves to be inspired by it? What if someone else's consistency became proof of what's possible rather than evidence of what's unfair? Because the truth is, you're capable of far more than you probably give yourself credit for. And the life you want is usually built the same way Melissa built 51 weeks of workouts—one choice, one day, and one act of consistency at a time. Medford has opened a new 19-court pickleball complex at Howard Memorial Sports Park. City officials say the $2 million facility is the largest municipal pickleball complex in Oregon.
The Memphis Redbirds sent out a press release addressing the recent statements made by Councilman Chase Carlisle about Memphis moving on from the Redbirds. “The world has changed…people are playing pickleball. They’re not going to baseball games. They are sure as heck not going to minor league games.” Are the Redbirds in the right? Also on the show: New York might be gone if the Knicks win the Finals after the legendary Game 4, Jake almost agrees with Jemelle Hill on Karmelo Anthony, and Mexico wins the first World Cup game against South Africa. ABOUT A PICKLEBALL CHRISTMAS Tennis star Luke Hollis heads home for Christmas and discovers his family's racquet club is about to be sold. Along with Caroline, the club's pickleball coach, Luke agrees to compete in a holiday tournament that could save the club. AIR DATE & NETWORK FOR A PICKLEBALL CHRISTMAS December 20, 2025 | Lifetime CAST & CREW OF A PICKLEBALL CHRISTMAS Director: Monika Mitchell Writer: Blake Rutledge Cast: James Lafferty as Luke Hollis Zibby Allen as Caroline BRAN'S MOVIE SYNOPSIS We meet pro tennis player Luke Hollis. He is an angry boy. But he wins a big tournament and then promptly quits. He's moving to Florida and his agent can't stop him! We then meet Caroline. She works at a Racquet club. They've recently converted the courts to pickleball to capitalize on the trend. Will it be enough to save the club by Christmas? Because if not, it's over!!!! Luke gets home for Christmas. His dad is the owner of said Racquet club. And Luke pitches him letting him take over the club - call it the Luke Hollis Champions Center. They tell him the bad news about probably losing the center. He gets to the club the next day and is super mad to find out that his tennis court has been turned into a pickleball court! But when he finds out that this Christmas day pickleball tournament might be the club's last chance to save it, he tries to figure out how to help. He finds a partner to help broadcast the tournament. The problem is the money they're going to spend isn't going to the club, rather to the winner of the tournament. That prize money is enough to save the club, so Luke decides he's going to compete. So Caroline agrees to help him learn this sport and next thing you know, they're hooking up in the shed. At the club holiday party, Caroline and Luke go together, and his parents make an announcement naming Luke the next club owner, if they're able to make it another week. Somehow, Caroline gets the idea that Luke is going to get rid of pickleball. She leaves the party and then avoids him until the Christmas day tournament. He realizes that something is up and just says lock it in. But she can't do it anymore. During the championship, she tries to throw the match! Luke tells her that she misunderstood! They put on matching shirts and go out there and WIN!!! Cut to one year later, the club is thriving. Luke's sister comes to get Caroline saying that Luke's injured and needs her to come quick. It's a fake injury! And he proposes with the ring inside of a pickleball. Watch the show on Youtube - www.deckthehallmark.com/youtubeInterested in advertising on the show? In this special episode, Tony sits down with Neely Sullivan and Natasha Linton, the co-hosts of the Real Housewives of Pickleball podcast, for a conversation on how they each came to pickleball, what Neely and Natasha took away from their recent interview with Anna Bright (especially her use of the word "conscious"), and why focusing on one or two things per rec session is more useful than trying to fix everything at once.
