Laura Gainor’s background in pickleball is significant, as she was around the sport in some of its earlier days before it became a national phenomenon. During her time in marketing at USA Pickleball, she witnessed first-hand how the sport was taking off. Today, of course, the numbers speak for themselves. In last year’s Topline Participation Report produced by the Sports & Fitness Industry Association, the group’s researchers reported that pickleball grew 58 percent in participation in the previous year. And over the past three years, that participation has grown by some 223 percent. As a result, brands are looking to get involved with the sport any way they can and event organizers are searching for ways to activate a pickleball experience around their events as well. And development is coming in, too. Entire communities around the country are being planned with pickleball courts in mind to allow people more access to play. Gainor saw the writing on the wall for all these trends and launched Pickleball in the Sun as a way to help brands, event organizers and others navigate the fast-evolving world of pickleball. In this conversation, we discuss how those brands look different today, what you should know about including pickleball as a component of your event, where the sport is going and what, if anything, may slow its momentum.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Welcome to another episode of Game Plan! It has been a while since we have done one of these Game Plan episodes so to quickly review: These episodes are specifically designed for patients. They are designed to hopefully answer some of the questions you have about the most common sports medicine conditions, injury prevention and treatment options.Today we're talking about pickleball – the fastest growing sport in the United States. From 2019- 2021, the number of pickleball players increased from 3.3 to 4.8 million. The reason for the growth of the sport is likely multifactorial, including that it encompasses a wide variety of age ranges, it is easy to understand and it is inexpensive to play. However, with this steady growth has come a corresponding linear rise in pickleball injuries. And these injuries are not inexpensive, costing between 250 to 500 million dollars in 2023 alone.Pickleball is a paddle sport that takes aspects from tennis, badminton, and ping-pong. Now, we were going to try to explain the pickleball rules here, and how it differs from other racquet sports. But, USA Pickleball has a really nice 5-minute video on their website (usapickleball.org) that quickly summarizes the basic rules. If you are interested in learning more about this game, definitely check out their website. It should be noted that the rules and scoring system are currently variable. But as more competitions arise, more standardization to the game will likely follow, as is the trend with most sports.Today, we're reviewing an article published in the November 2024 issue of the yellow journal titled “Pickleball: A Standard Review of Injury Prevalence and Prevention in a Rapidly Growing Sport.” This study compiled data from retrospective studies containing emergency department data and case reports of specific injuries sustained while playing pickleball. The authors also utilized a customized survey to capture outpatient data of current pickleball players seen in outpatient orthopedic facilities and at local pickleball events.
Entrepreneurs are always looking for an edge to stand out from their competition. One of the best ways to do this is by attracting and retaining driven talent and building a culture and atmosphere that the teams and customers enjoy working with. And that's precisely what today's guest has been doing for over two decades. Veronique James is the CEO and founder of the James Agency, a full-service integrated marketing agency in Scottsdale, Arizona, where she's worked with clients like USA Pickleball, Northern Arizona University, Travel Costa Mesa, and the Phoenix Children's Foundation, to name just a few. She prides herself on building a respectful, honest, and ego-free environment and helps clients connect their brand to their audience with authenticity. In our conversation, she shared how she finds moments of calm in her hectic schedule, the hard lessons that helped her build a high-performance luxury agency that retains clients and talent, and the mistakes that so many businesses make when trying to find their ideal customers. In this podcast interview, you'll learn: How Veronique's first job at a marketing agency showed her what not to do as she started to build and grow her business. Why the James Agency avoids churning employees, stays lean, and maintains a strong culture even when scaling. Why customers are hungrier than ever for authenticity. How Veronique is using AI as a supplement–not a replacement–at work. What Veronique did during the COVID pandemic to avoid cutting a single employee, maintain culture, and keep up morale during what was otherwise a very challenging year for her business. How to screen prospective clients early on–and help a client that isn't a good fit leave on their own. MLS, NWSL and the WNBA all broke attendance records this past season, and DP & McGhee talked about the success these leagues have experienced and hope to continue into the new year. They also touched on the hot button topic of NIL and the impact college athletes have had on the changing landscape of collegiate sports. It's been a while, but David and Tim also talk about the recently announced media deal between QVC and USA Pickleball. Would you like to buy an exfoliant before the next match starts? They close out the episode by talking about the lawsuit brought by 23XI Racing and Front Row Motorsports against NASCAR. It's safe to say this won't be the last time the topic comes up.

On this week's Modern Retail Rundown, the editorial team discusses the latest Levi's earnings, including the potential sale of the under-performing Dockers brand. Meanwhile, QVC struck a deal with the USA Pickleball league for the rights to stream matches with and other shoppable pickleball content. Merriam-Webster's Word of the Day for June 2, 2024 is: incidence IN-suh-dunss noun Incidence refers to the number of times something happens or develops—in other words, the rate at which something occurs. // The neighborhood boasts excellent schools and a low incidence of crime. See the entry > Examples: "Pickleball, which is played with a perforated plastic ball and wooden paddles on a badminton-sized court, is the fastest growing sport in the U.S., with the number of players rising from 4.8 million in 2021 to 8.9 million in 2023, according to USA Pickleball. … A study co-authored by [Dr. Eric] Bowman that has not yet been published finds that between 2017 and 2022, the incidence of pickleball-related injuries rose faster than the growth of the sport's popularity." — Linda Carroll, NBC News, 12 Feb. 2024 Did you know? The words incident, incidence, and instance may seem similar (and, in fact, incident and incidence are closely related), but they are applied in different ways. In current use, incidence usually means "rate of occurrence" and is often qualified in some way ("a high incidence of bear sightings"). Incident usually refers to a particular event, often something unusual or unpleasant ("many such incidents go unreported"). Instance suggests a particular occurrence that is offered as an example ("another instance of a simple change bringing real improvement"); it can also be synonymous with case ("many instances/cases in which the wrong form was submitted"). The plural incidences sometimes occurs in such contexts as "several recent incidences of bear sightings," but this use is often criticized as incorrect.

Jose Moreno, the CMO of USA Pickleball, joins us in this episode to share USA Pickeball's journey from a small governing body (with just 4-5 employees a few years ago), to now leading the charge as the fastest-growing sport in America. How did they do this? - By building a strong sense of community around the sport. Jose emphasized the importance of constant listening and adapting to authentically 'build credibility' with their player base, instead of simply dictating from the top down. The brand built credibility in the niche through strategic partnerships with brands from other industries, like Fortune Tires and Skechers. Additionally, Jose shared insights on the challenges of prioritizing and executing as a small marketing team to keep up with the surging demand, cautioning against trying to be "all things to everybody". The conversation is full of useful tips and insights from USA Pickleball's journey to becoming the top contender in the rapidly growing pickleball world, highlighting the significance of community, authenticity, and strategic prioritization.Watch the video version of this podcast on YouTube
Stu Upson, CEO of USA Pickleball explains the sport.
Today I'm covering the second Beatitude in Matthew 5:4 which reads, "Blessed are those who mourn, for they will be comforted." (NRSVUE) Mourning is something many of us don't do well. There's a misconception among Christians that we should always be happy. Think about this, though: If you don't mourn you'll miss out on the blessing of being comforted. You also rob others of being a blessing when they comfort you. How Can We Apply This to Pickleball? You're going to lose some games. If you're like me, you're going to lose a lot of games. If I'm not playing well, I can really start feeling down on myself. When this happens, it's important for me to allow my partner or the group I'm playing with to comfort me. It's also a good time to consider any instructions or suggestions from others so that I can improve my game. News Steve Wong is the new Vice President of Competition at USA Pickleball. In a press release on their site, USA Pickleball said Wong "will oversee USA Pickleball's competition department with an emphasis on growing and streamlining all sanctioned tournament play, including National Championships, regional tournaments and general sanctioning." The Vulcan's VPRO FLIGHT Pickleball was named the official ball of the PPA Pro Tour. Pickleball Tip This week's pickleball tip comes from Briones Pickleball and it's about improving your serve. Have a pre-serve routine to help you focus on the point. Contact the ball in front of your body. America's fastest growing sport is feeling growing pains. Pickleball has exploded in popularity in the last few years, especially among older people looking for ways to socialize and keep in shape. Described as a mashup of tennis, badminton and ping-pong, the sport is relatively easy to learn and fun to play. In 2022, there were 8.9 million U.S. pickleball players over age six, according to a 2023 Sports & Fitness Industry Association report referenced by USA Pickleball, the sport's national governing body.To keep up with demand, cities across Minnesota have been adding pickleball courts. Life Time, the Chanhassen-based fitness chain, has built about 500 courts nationwide and plans to double that to 1,000 by the end of 2024. And private pickleball clubs are popping up to offer beginner classes, leagues and tournaments. But with popularity have come challenges, including injuries, complaints about noise from neighbors, fights over court time and a struggle to keep the game friendly and affordable for beginners. MPR News host Angela Davis talks about the popularity of pickleball and its future. Guests: Fuyei Xaykaothao is the founder of PikNinja Sports in Eagan, Minn., which makes pickleball gear and paddles. He's also a former college tennis player and a former associate director of the non-profit St. Paul Urban Tennis. Justin Hammerback is co-owner of Dropshot Pickleball Club in Shakopee, Minn., which opened nine indoor pickleball courts this summer. Trent Stensrud is a pickleball player and physical therapist with TRIA in Bloomington, Minn. He just self-published a book called “Pain-Free Pickleball” on how to avoid injuries. Pickleball, the madly popular sport embraced by all ages, is not without growing pains. Tim Almaguer Division Chief for Community Engagement & Strategic Partnerships at Baltimore City Recreation & Parks tells about efforts to meet demand. And Betsy Cunningham, pickleball fan, shares her grand vision for the sport: “It's a way to bring peace to our neighborhoods. First thing you do when you get on the court is you find out who you're playing with, and you say hello. And the goal of the game is not to win, the goal is to have a good time. And when you finish you congratulate the team for what a good game they played. So you win fairly, you lose fairly. I like that idea for peace, I think we could use that in Baltimore.” Links: Baltimore Pickleball, Baltimore City Recreation and Parks, USA Pickleball, Baltimore City Pickleball info.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

The Sports and Fitness Industry Association has made it official in its latest trends report: pickleball is the fastest-growing sport in the country. Over the past two years, participation is up 39 percent, including an increase of more than 20 percent from 2019 to 2020 when the pandemic helped drive the sport's appeal. Leading the charge on the sport's growth is USA Pickleball, which boasts 50,000 members and a robust events series that is also gaining momentum. Stu Upson, a veteran of the sports-events industry has been CEO since December 2020 and is leading the organization into the future with new sponsorship deals, broadcast deals for its largest events and a steady hand as the sport navigates questions of a gap in venues and a rapid rise of manufacturers and others wanting in on the action. In addition, professional leagues are sprouting, including some that are inking impressive hosting deals in some of the largest sports venues in the country. In this conversation with SportsTravel Executive Editor and Publisher Jason Gewirtz, Upson discusses what has accounted for the sport's growth in popularity, when venues will catch up with demand, what the event landscape looks like and what the biggest threats may be to the continued power of pickleball to gain new followers and fans.
