Episode 9 features the return of the Crime Courts and Public Safety update! It's overdue after being squeezed out by election news and our exclusive discussion with Andrew Marquess about beating City Hall in court- but with 5 murders piled up and some near-misses to reconstruct we get right down to business! Part 1 starts out with a review of our unique election content and interviews available at ActionLine.ca, and coming up - we've heard about some ridings being back in play. It seems the MSM has dialed back the 'doomed to lose' narrative about the Manitoba Conservatives. What are the possible reasons for the NDP to reconsider being connected to union honchos policing "parental rights of their own members? Voices on the ground, many usually sympathetic to the Orange, are warning of the rebound against Wab Kinew's stance on a landfill search- and of him calling people opposed to our schools keeping secrets from parents "divisive." Marty Gold then explains how the election campaign itself, is now part of the crime report. Vandalism of signs numbers in the thousands, in high-stakes ridings. A very low form of intimidation. * Will you help us expand our local reporting? We accept donations via  paypal.com/paypalme/MartyGoldMedia 19.00 - The Crime Courts and Public Safety Update is sponsored by JamRock Security The opening act this summer was a city-wide theft spree by 2 accused, fencing off high-priced eyewear. And now topping the bill - FIVE Murders in a row, by gunshot. Marty describes the criminal background of some of the accused, which seems to directly confirm what PC candidate Rejeanne Caron told us. Released on 'conditions' that are totally ignored, repeat offenders are let free under amendments to the Criminal Code made by the Trudeau government with federal NDP support. Who are the judges that released these pathological criminals who go on to ruthlessly kill? The media never tells us. And the body count could easily have exceeded a half-dozen, what with an unexploded IED discovered in the suite of one of the deceased. Who was the bomb for? TGCTS connects the locations street by street with their wards, and then with the councilors. How do these murders affect the surrounding neighbors? None of the councilors seem to ask. 31:10 - Two other violent assaults almost added to the body count. One was a 4 AM shooting in South Point Douglas (with a ghost gun) where a half-dozen court prohibitions proved useless. The other incident, in St. Boniface, was even more disturbing, as 3 teens were jumped walking to their car at 3 AM this weekend by a gang of 4 thugs, who remorselessly slashed and stabbed the victims. You'll wonder why St. B Councilor Matt Allard didn't immediately reassure the public, considering where they were jumped: Allard's highly-touted tourist destination at Tache and Provencher. Maybe he was busy trying to figure out how to spin the stalled Provencher bike lane plan as a public safety measure. Lastly, a listener took note of an essay by Police Chief Danny Smyth about downtown safety, and said that while Smyth points to New York tamping down crime years ago, Smyth doesn't comprehend the basic policing that underpinned that success. Instead, we get our own version of Gotham City. Coming up: an exclusive interview with a former MLA and MP, about growing Manitoba's economy and the election promises that have been made. A 31-year-old Colorado man was sentenced to 97 years behind bars for the fatal shooting of his sister and her boyfriend in their home last year. The unprovoked attack, captured on audio by one of the victims, led to a lengthy legal process that concluded with a stern verdict. Casey Devol, 31, pleaded guilty to two counts of second-degree murder in the deaths of his sister, Jessica Mitchell, 32, and her boyfriend, Bryan “Todd” Gray, 34, and one count of felony animal cruelty. The murders took place on February 8, 2022. Douglas County District Judge Patricia Herron handed down the sentence, ordering Devol to serve 97 years in a state correctional facility for the murders. The sentencing comes after an arduous legal battle that involved the compelling evidence provided by an audio recording made by Jessica Mitchell herself. District Attorney John Kellner emphasized the pivotal role played by the audio recording in ensuring justice was served. "When no eyewitnesses to these murders existed, a digital recorder device became a voice for the victims. Jessica likely sensed something was wrong, and her instincts to start a recording and archive the tragic turn of events helped detectives and my prosecutors piece this mystery together and bring justice to their families." He commended Jessica Mitchell's quick thinking to start recording, which helped law enforcement authorities piece together the tragic events leading up to the fatal shooting.   The initial response from law enforcement came on that fateful day when deputies from the Douglas County Sheriff's Office were dispatched to a residence on S. Russellville Road. Upon arrival, they discovered the lifeless bodies of Jessica Mitchell and Bryan Gray. Autopsies confirmed that both victims had died as a result of fatal gunshot wounds. Investigations quickly revealed surveillance footage capturing a suspect entering the victims' garage with multiple firearms. Subsequent information provided by a friend of Jessica Mitchell pointed to her brother, Casey Devol, as the likely perpetrator. Devol's resemblance to the suspect in the surveillance footage provided a strong lead for investigators. However, the unexpected discovery of a digital recording device on Jessica Mitchell's person during the autopsy truly unraveled the case. The audio recording, which started during a dinner conversation between the three individuals, offered chilling insights into the events leading up to the murder. "On the recording, you hear three people talking over dinner. The recording is unclear as to what the motive was behind the shooting. What is clear is that two of the three people having dinner that night were murdered and the only person who can answer ‘why' is Mr. Devol," shared Chief Deputy District Attorney Andrew Steers. Tragically, the audio recording captured Devol's chilling actions even after the fatal shootings. Mitchell's family members were compelled to address the court, revealing that they could hear Devol "staging and taunting the bodies" and even "beating their dog with a hammer" in the recording. The conversation before the incident was described as "jovial," further highlighting the senselessness of the attack. Want to listen to ALL of our podcasts AD-FREE? Last year, a man was arrested and charged with the murder of four Indigenous women in the Winnipeg area. When the charges were laid police said they believed the remains of two of the women would be found at the Prairie Green landfill, but that they wouldn't be searching for them. This sparked outrage from the victims families and the Indigenous community, and a push for a search began. Experts weighed in, the federal government was petitioned, costs and concerns were cited and last week Manitoba's provincial government decided not to allow a search, and the protests began. Why would the government prevent a search? What impact could this have on the case, and on families and community? And with protests not stopping anytime soon, what happens next?GUEST: Brittany Hobson, reporter, The Canadian Press

There have been emotional scenes this afternoon at the funerals of the two Sligo murder victims, Michael Snee and Aidan Moffitt. The funerals took place at the same time, in Sligo and in Lisacul in Co. Roscommon. In his homily at the Funeral Mass for Michael Snee, Fr Noel Rooney, parish priest of St. Joseph's Church in Ballytivnan, spoke of the sadness, grief, devastation, disbelief, and anger, at Michael's death He said it was important not to allow the horror of Michael's death define his beautiful life. He said Michael was a beautiful, kind, and gentle person. He was much-loved and had a heart filled with love. Fr Rooney said that last Tuesday, the day his body was discovered, he had cooked a stew for his family and phoned at 6.30pm that evening to ask if they had enjoyed it. He had planned a visit to Rosses Point with his nephew later that evening, but was cancelled because of the weather. And later that same night, around 10.30pm, his two nieces would make would make the grim discovery. Aaron Spring, nephew of Michael, spoke of Michael's love for his family, and said the Moffitt family were also in their thoughts at this time. Among those in attendance at the funeral was the aide-de-camp to An Taoiseach. Meanwhile, at the same time, Father Michael McManus, a close friend of the Moffitt family, was the chief celebrant at the Funeral Mass of Aidan Moffitt at Liscul in Co Roscommon. He said last Tuesday morning was one he would never forget, when he heard of Aidan's death. Words failed him at this time, he said. He prayed also for the family of Michael Snee. He said Aidan was a man of great faith and faith would help people get through this difficult time. While tributes were paid to Aidan by Martin McMahon. Listen to all four contributions here.

In August 1997, sixteen-year-old William Jenkins was on his second day of work at a fast-food restaurant in suburban Richmond, Virginia when the restaurant was robbed at closing time. While cooperating fully with the robber, William was shot and died instantly. His father, Bill Jenkins, quickly found that there were virtually no readily available resources that could answer his many questions as a survivor of a traumatic loss. He began looking for help and found it, after a fashion, scattered in the bookstores, on the Internet, and in support groups and agencies. But nowhere was there a single, concise, practical, and eminently useful resource for bereaved families written by victims for victims containing the advice and guidance that he and his family needed following their loss. Several months later, using the information he had collected for his own personal well-being, this experienced teacher and speaker sat down to write the book that he should have received the night he was notified of his son’s death, What to do When the Police Leave: A Guide to the First Days of Traumatic Loss. This landmark book on grief and bereavement quickly became an important resource for families dealing with the sudden or traumatic death of a loved one and the caregivers who work with them. Now, a recognized expert on victims and trauma, Bill has served on the boards of directors for Murder Victims for Human Rights, the National Coalition of Victims in Action, and is the founder, along with his wife, Jennifer Bishop, of IllinoisVictims.org, a statewide victim rights watchdog group. He is also active in many other victims’ rights and support activities and organizations, has been an instructor with the Virginia Institute of Forensic Science and Medicine, leads seminars on victims’ perspectives for national organizations such as the National Center for Victims of Crime, the National Organization of Victim Assistance, and Parents of Murdered Children and also addresses local and regional conferences for law enforcement and victim advocates. He and his wife also speak at victim impact panels for youthful offenders and in support of funding for programs for children and young people that are proven to decrease crime. In 2006, Bill received the Edith Surgan Victim Activist of the Year award from the National Organization of Victim Assistance, a singular honor that recognizes to his expertise in the field and his commitment to making society more sensitive to victims’ rights and needs. In 2019, he was awarded the prestigious John Gillis Leadership Award by Parents of Murdered Children. Bill has also written a full-length play, Hearts Full of Tears, that has been produced by two professional theatre companies so far. It deals with the emotional struggle of a family dealing with the shooting death of their teen-aged son. Critical and audience reviews have been very positive. Returning to his educational roots and love of biology, his latest research is in the neurobiology of trauma and stress, how our brains respond to traumatic experiences, and what treatments are most helpful to victims and their families. He hopes that his own personal perspective and unique voice using the latest authoritative scientific discoveries will help victims understand how their brains respond to crisis and inform caregivers how best to help trauma victims in their work. Bill is a professional artist and educator at the college level for over 25 years, he currently teaches and designs for the theatre program at Dominican University near Chicago, IL. You can buy the book What to do When the Police Leave: A Guide to the First Days of Traumatic Loss. By clicking on the title link.

Extreme Genes host/creator Scott Fisher opens the show with David Allen Lambert, Chief Genealogist of the New England Historic Genealogical Society and AmericanAncestors.org. Fisher begins by talking about his recent visit to St. Joseph, Missouri for the Northwest Missouri Genealogical Society where he gave four lectures. David visited a sale of ancestral clothing and other stuff in New York City that brought in millions. It was from the family of Babe Ruth!  The guys then talk about the importance of the recent email sent out by GEDMatch about law enforcement. Find out what you need to do to support authorities with your DNA.  Next, the guys talk about three World War I soldiers whose remains have been found in France. Two have been identified by DNA and have received military funerals along with the third a century after their deaths.  David then talks about NEHGS and their involvement in creating a website for descendants of the 272 Africans sold into slavery by Georgetown University. (They’re now up to 314.)  Hear more about the project.  David’s Blogger Spotlight this week shines on Angela Buckley of Victorian-supersleuth.com. David describes Angela’s fascinating blogs. Next, Fisher talks with Kristine Bartley of Des Moines, Iowa. Kristine explains how she came to spearhead a project to put tombstones on the graves of over 300 children in a local cemetery who died over a hundred years ago. Fisher then visits with Rebekah Heath, a Connecticut woman whose hobby is… er… unusual. She researches missing persons and tries to identify them. Recently, she had her first big success. Find out what she did. Then, The Archive Lady, Melissa Barker, joins Fisher for another Ask Us Anything session… this time on archive family history research. That’s all this week on Extreme Genes, America’s Family History Show!

The goal of The Transparency Project is to help families who are survivors of victims of murder or suspicious death, to gain access to police records related to the investigation of the death of their loved one. This will primarily involve making sure the police agency involved is complying in full with the Sunshine or Open Records laws in effect in their particular jurisdiction. It can include filing appeals when requests for records are denied, and/or recommending changes to existing laws that are overly restrictive.

When a city’s murder rate goes up and stays high for years, what do community activists working against violence do? How do they keep from losing hope? Back in 2010, State of the Re:Union visited New Orleans, Louisiana, and reported on community responses to urban violence. Among the places SOTRU visited was St. Anna’s Episcopal Church in the Treme neighborhood, which had come up with a novel way of documenting the city’s violence: something they called the Murder Board. This year, we sent reporter Nina Feldman back to St. Anna’s to see how the project is maintaining, these years later.VIEW PHOTOS AND MORE

In the late 1800s, the worlds of biology, photography and criminology came together to ask a tantalising question….might the human retina retain the final image a person sees before death…If so, with careful examination of the eyeball, surely this was a sure fire way of solving every murder…because the killers image would be imprinted in the victims eyes…if only investigators discovered the body within 24 hours.Tonight, we explore one of the most fascinating theories in police work…a notion that gripped optometrist, photographers and detectives alike.
