Today's guest deejay is Martyn Palmer AKA Broken Chip. I came across Martyn while scouring Bandcamp for new music, a modern treasure hunt. Immersed in his album The Quiet Garden, I found myself drawn into its depths. I asked Martyn to share a mix with us. Martyn is an Australian musician and sound artist, a creator of serene soundscapes. His works have graced labels such as Flaming Pines (UK), Feral Media (AU), King Deluxe (CA), and A Future Without (UK). His music, often built on looped sounds, crafts a tranquil, contemplative atmosphere. His latest work, Landscapes, exemplifies this gentle electronic ambience, captivating listeners with its peaceful stillness. The name “Broken Chip” arose from his trials with a malfunctioning Roland Juno 106 synthesizer. The 80017a VCF/VCA voice chips began to fail, producing a detuned, raspy sound. Martyn wove this brokenness into his music, finding beauty in imperfection. Though the synthesizer eventually became unusable, the broken sound it produced inspired the name of his project. Martyn hopes his music serves as ambient background sound, suitable for homes, planes, or trains. Once released, he seldom reflects on its reception, preferring to let listeners discover and experience it on their own. His initial promotion is brief; he avoids persistent self-promotion, letting the music speak for itself. Martyn has two albums coming out on Home Normal later this year. A single produced from the soundtrack of the David Lynch film version of Dune (1984). Toto, with its big synthesizers, created most of the soundtrack, although Brian Eno, Roger Eno and Daniel Lanois had one track (included later in this podcast). Bass, David Hungate; Drums, Percussion, Jeff Porcaro; Guitar, Steve Lukather; Keyboards, David Paich, Steve Porcaro. 6:36 David Matthews, “Part I: Arrakis,” “Part II: Sandworms,” “Part III: Song Of The Bene Gesserit,” “Part IV: Muad'Dib” from Dune (1977 CTI Records). Arranged by David Matthews and produced by Creed Taylor for his CTI jazz label, this was an extended work inspired by the novel by Frank Herbert. Cliff Carter plays the solo synth (mini-Moog?) on the first track and other places. The work is jazz with bits of electronic music blended into the instrumentation. It remains an interesting artifact partly because of the legal problems CTI faced once they released the album. Because CTI had not secured writer Frank Herbert's authorization to use his novel Dune as the thematic center piece for the album, Herbert filed a law suit against CTI and won, forcing the label to delete it from catalog. For this reason, that interesting album was never reissued in the USA. Enjoy. The recording of Herbert was made at the height of the Dune craze, the late 1970s. When David Lynch made his film for release in 1984, he was working with Splet who is not credited by whom may have contributed some electronic and ambient sounds. This track appears to confirm that and I've combined it with the Herbert reading. 5:07 Brian Eno, Roger Eno and Daniel Lanois, “Prophecy Theme” from Dune (Original Soundtrack Recording) (1984 Polydor). This little track was the only one that remained of Eno's contributions to the Dune soundtrack, although he reportedly composed an entire movie's worth of music for the film. Cassette release from this Australian rapper, electronic musician, model and actress.This is a famous quote from Herbert's Dune and seemed fitting to have it represented by a musician for the podcast. 0:36 Klaus Schulze, “Dune” from Dune (1979 Brain). Yes, Schulze, too, was infected with the Dune craze and created this ambitious 30-minute work to acknowledge it. This is a truly lovely electronic work from those days when Schulze was largely still working analog synthesis, and synthesize voices and orchestral sounds, much like his earlier album X. The cello is played by Wolfgang Tiepold, produced by and all keyboards by Klaus Schulze. The first side comprises the piece called Dune and the second side features an unrelated work with vocals by Arthur Brown. An intriguing album all around! 30:05 Graeme Revell & The City Of Prague Philharmonic, “Seduction” from Frank Herbert's Dune (Original Soundtrack From The Sci-Fi Channel Mini Series) (2001 GNP Cresendo). Composed by Graeme Revell; executive producer, Neil Norman; orchestra, chorus, The City Of Prague Philharmonic. This is the soundtrack for a Sci Fi channel mini-series back in 2001. The music is primarily orchestral, being performed in the Czech Republic and arranged by Neil Norman, Hollywood veteran of science fiction films. But Revell did compose it and there are a few tracks, such as the one featured here, that have clearly electronic elements that stand out. 1:51 Grimes, “Caladan” from Geidi Primes (2011 No Pain in Pop). Grimes' first album was a concept album based on Frank Herbert's novel Dune and David Lynch's 1984 film adaptation of the book. This track is about the fictional home planet of the Atreides, the protagonist clan in the novel. Produced by, written by, played by Grimes. She used relatively simple sounds, overdubs, and interesting vocal mixes to tell these tales. 2:23 Kurt Stenzel, “Parallel World” (1:42), “Parallel World (Outro)” (1:04), “Leap Of Faith” (0:43), “Time And Space” (2:04), “Optical World” (2:56), “Nebula” (2:26), and “Invitation” (excerpt) from Jodorowsky's Dune (Original Motion Picture Soundtrack) (2014 Cinewax). This is a bit of a side-hustle because Alejandro Jodorowsky's much hyped film version of Dune, which he sought to make in the 1970s, does not exist. It is one of the most famous movies that never existed. Still, the Chilean-French film director, producer, composer, actor stuck with the idea for quite some time until the David Lynch movie was produced in the 1980s and sucked all of the available Dune oxygen out of the room. But Jodorowsky's passion for the project inspired others, including guitarist and synthesist Stenzel who produced this soundtrack to a 2014 documentary about Jodorowsky and the ill-fated project. Stenzel composed music inspired by the book. This double LP has 33 tracks and I focused on a selection of connected synth tracks from the first album. Dune remained a lifelong source of fascination for Schulze. This, his final album, was also inspired by the novel he loved so well. This is a three-LP set, but the first LP is single-sided. Because of his ill health, Schulze knew that this might be his final project. In the liner notes he wrote directly to his fans, saying, “Thank you for your great support over all these years. This is for you! May the spice be with you. Zimmer composed the soundtrack for the Denis Villeneuve released in 2021. Villeneuve has praised Zimmer's work on the film and that he had spent,"months and months creating new instruments, defining, creating, and seeking new sounds, pushing the envelope." In addition to a soundtrack for the film itself, Zimmer released two companion releases that provide an extended listen to the sounds and experiments that were created for the project. Three albums were released for the film by WaterTower Music, including The Dune Sketchbook (Music from the Soundtrack), Dune (Original Motion Picture Soundtrack), and The Art and Soul of Dune on September 3, September 17, and October 22, 2021, respectively. Recommended Records, the UK-based record maker, released this compilation of tracks taken from all three of those records. The group Wha Ha Ha ended at that point but its four principle members went on to varied musical careers. Akira Sakata is an alto saxophonist, Kiyohiko Semba is a percussionist, Mishio Ogawa is a vocalist, and Shuichi Chino is a keyboardist and electronic musician. 10:08 Merzbow, “Untitled 1” from Material Action for Two Microphone (sp) (2nd version) (1984 artist cassette). Masami Akita is one of my long-time favorite Japanese electronic/noise practitioners. He would send me cassettes back in the 1980s and I've always tried to keep up with him. This prolific Japanese noise artist has released over 500 recordings since 1979.Recorded at Merzbau. George Michael loved Christmas. For years, he would have a big, boozy dinner party with about 25 of his closest friends on Christmas Eve. Some years, they’d even go out carolling after dinner. Imagine: George Michael showing up at your front door at 10 o’clock on Christmas Eve singing Silent Night. It should be no surprise that a guy who loved celebrating the season so much would write a future classic. This is the story of #LastChristmas. Behind the Christmas Hits is Presented by Pizza Pizza! George & Wham! partner Andrew Ridgeley were watching soccer together at Michaels’ parents’ house when the inspiration struck. Andrew Ridgeley recalled in an interview with British newspaper The Mail on Sunday, that they were having a bite to eat during the game when, almost unnoticed, George went upstairs and didn’t return for about an hour. When he did, Ridgeley said he was so excited, it was like he struck gold…which, in a way, he had. George didn’t live with his parents, but his old keyboard was still there…and he used it to write Last Christmas. The two went back upstairs and George played the chorus for Andrew, who described it as a moment of wonder. The timing of this inspiration came at a critical time for Wham! Earlier in ‘84, after a legal dispute with their original record label, Inner Vision, George and Andrew signed with Epic Records and had more creative control. And George…took full control. When recording the song Everything She Wants, George and sound engineer, Chris Porter, wound up in a studio in Paris with no band and no producer. Chris says that’s when George realized he could do everything himself. Later, when recording Last Christmas in August of ’84, not even Andrew Ridgeley was allowed in the studio. That’s right – it’s another Wham! song where Andrew Ridgeley is nowhere to be found. George played a Roland Juno-60 synth and a LinnDrumm drum machine himself. Porter has said he wanted to play the sleigh bells but George wouldn’t even let him do that – if it was going to be on the record, George had to play it. The video for Last Christmas was the last time George appeared on camera without a beard. You know, based on what Andrew Ridgeley wrote in his book Wham, George Michael & Me, we could do an entire episode on the making of the video alone. All of the people in it were real life friends of George & Andrew’s. Wham’s back-up singers Pepsi & Shirley were there as was Martin Kemp, the bass player for Spandau Ballet. They went on an absolute tear. On their first night at the chalet, Andrew says everyone jumped naked into a swimming pool. One unnamed friend swallowed half a gallon of water and got terribly sick…in the pool. While Last Christmas has been one of the most popular Christmas songs of the last 40 years, it has never reached #1. Christmas 1984 was the same year Band Aid’s Do They Know It’s Christmas was released and it was the song to dominate the charts that season. George, of course, sang on that song – but Andrew no-showed the recording session. He dismissed a vaguely worded FAX from their management team as being of little importance, so while George, Bono, Boy George and the rest of British pop royalty were making history, Ridgeley says he was at home having a bacon and egg sandwich. Ridgeley said in his book that he and George were conflicted about the fact Last Christmas was kept out of the #1 spot by Band Aid. Chart success was important to George, especially as he was planning his solo career. All proceeds from Last Christmas were also donated to African famine relief efforts that year, but this undertow of disappointment was real. A disappointment that the song had become what Andrew describes as a “Trivial Pursuit” answer to the question: what is the biggest-selling single NOT to get to #1 in the UK. And right now Der Goldene Reiter is launching his own balearic tape label called Tropical Europe (@tropical-europe). Der Goldene Reiter made a Christmas gift for our listeners. It has become a little less balearic soft-house and gone more into the direction of "drum'n'haze", how he likes to call it”.

This week, a special conversation with the founder and sonic visionary behind one of the America's most beloved and underrated roots-and-noise-rock groups, Grandaddy: Jason Lytle. Starting from humble beginnings as a trio of skateboarding friends in Modesto, CA in the early 1990s, Grandaddy put out a series of daring, deeply weird records all produced and written by Lytle that first caught fire in Europe, and by the turn of the Millennium, the band found themselves headlining rock festivals like Glastonbury in the UK and crashing late night TV in the US with the cool kids. But Jason wasn't cut out for traditional cookie-cutter stardom. Grandaddy broke up for six years, and after disappearing into the Montana wilderness, the soft spoken multi-instrumentalist mountain-crazy songwriter kept his devoted fanbase coming back by creating oddly-titled solo records of cinematically rich soundscapes that encircled whacked anti-heroes and telling poetic, campfire-ready short story songs that still make us worried kids feel heard and seen but also constantly keep us guessing. His latest “NylonAndJuno”, which dropped in August on Dangerbird Records, is an experimental instrumental album made entirely with a nylon string guitar and a vintage Roland Juno synthesizer. Zach was able to catch up with Jason before a rare and recent solo show in LA.

Packed with talent and lots of experience in Techno and House music. His skills and interests are combining acoustic sounds like the piano with hardware to create his own house and techno sound. From a young age he was inspired by music such as Jazz, Soul, Blues and Funk that made him start to play the piano. While discovering his love for techno music and for house music a long time ago, he also found his love for hardware, producing and performing. A big talent with lots of experience. Hungarian producer Kovary joins us on the Producer Podcast this week! Tell us a little about yourself and the type of music you produce. I’m a musician for more than 20 years. I was born in a small town in Hungary. When I was a kid I formed a rock band with my brother, we played blues rooted retro rock in the late 90’s. Originally I’m a guitar player. In 2003. I joined NEO, a successful Hungarian electro pop band. We made an original soundtrack for a famous Hungarian movie called ‘Kontrol’, directed by Hollywood based director Nimrod Antal. It was his first movie, and it was a huge success in Europe. The ost. won tons of awards, we toured all over Europe in the mid 2000’s. We supported bands like Duran Duran, Kasabian, Massive Attack etc.. Besides I started my own dj career around 2006. I was always into funk and disco. I play the mixture of house, funk, disco and electro, with a little French touch and techno. As a producer I produce nu disco/indie dance and house. How did you get started in electronic music production? In the 90’s I played live rock music. When electronic acts like The Prodigy and The Chemical Brothers were topping the charts in the mid 90’s I was amazed by them, and started build my own home studio. I started to produce music on the computer around 2000. What is your DAW of choice? Cubase. I started on Cubase and Nuendo. Now I use Cubase 7 with Propellerhead Reason Rewire. Tell us about your workflow? How do you write a song? It’s very different in every occasion. In the past I always write songs on the guitar, now on keyboards. Sometimes I have a good melody in my mind, and I build the song around it. Sometimes I make a groovy bass line first. It depends on my mood. Can you tell us your favorite production tips? I don’t have. I love to try new things over and over again. I don’t like routines. Favorite softsynth? I’m an analogue hardware synth fan. I have 9 synths at my home studio (Moog Little Phatty, Sequential Circuits Prophet 600, Roland Juno 106, Korg Polysix etc) Besides I love Arturia softsynths, I have their analogue factory stuff. Favorite effect plug-in? I use UAD plugins. The best on the market. I love them. Favorite piece of hardware? Roland Juno 106. Roland SRE-555 Chorus Echo. SC Prophet 600. Anything else in your studio that you love? My Mackie 1402-VLZ3 mixer. Where do you go to personally learn and improve your production skills? I listen to a lot of music. Mostly funk and disco from the 70’s. All my favourite producers are from that era. I always try to figure out how did they do their job. Sometimes I read magazines like Sound On Sound and Future Music. What is the highlight of your music career thus far? I shared the decks with almost all of my favourite producers. Lot of them supports my music. I had a dozen Beatport Top 100 tracks. I played in front of thousands of people. What really helped your career along? Faith in music. What is the most effective way you have found to market your music? Soundcloud/Facebook/Beatport What is the best gig you ever played? This year in Budapest Akvarium Club, with 2many Djs (Soulwax), in front of 2000 people. What’s the best piece of advice you could give to an aspiring producer right now? Follow your intuitions.
