Talmage Boston holds a live cross-examination style interview of Ronald C. White, historian and author of A. Lincoln, American Ulysses, and his new book On Great Fields: The Life and Unlikely Heroism of Joshua Lawrence Chamberlain. On Great Fields is a comprehensive biography of an American soldier and leader who deserves to be known for more than his heroism in the Civil War.
Before 1862, Joshua Lawrence Chamberlain had rarely left his home state of Maine, where he was a trained minister and mild-mannered professor at Bowdoin College. His colleagues were shocked when he volunteered for the Union army, but he was undeterred and later became known as one of the North's greatest heroes: On the second day at Gettysburg, after running out of ammunition at Little Round Top, he ordered his men to wield their bayonets in a desperate charge down a rocky slope that routed the Confederate attackers. Despite being wounded at Petersburg—and told by two surgeons he would die—Chamberlain survived the war, going on to be elected governor of Maine four times and serve as president of Bowdoin College. How did a stuttering young boy come to be fluent in nine languages and even teach speech and rhetoric? How did a trained minister find his way to the battlefield? To explore Chamberlain's fascinating story is today's guest, Ronald White, author of “On Great Fields: The Life and Unlikely Heroism of Joshua Lawrence Chamberlain.” He is presented from cradle-to-grave in all his ideals, tenacity, and contradictions. This show is part of the Spreaker Prime Network, if you are interested in advertising on this podcast, contact us at https://www.spreaker.com/show/3101278/advertisement
Ron White is the author of "JFK: Scorpio Rising" which deals with the Kennedy assassination such as why was President Kennedy assassinated? The Warren Commission said a lone-nut Lee Oswald wanted him dead. In the late 1970's, the House Subcommittee on Assassinations concluded that JFK's, Martin Luther King's, Robert Kennedy's and Malcolm X's assassinations were all conspiracies but failed to identify conspirators. The passage of an event into history changes our perspective as the immediate need for answers disappears. Still the human need to understand why something happened lingers. The question changes from "Whodunnit" to "What can we learn about why it happened?" Ron's book is intended to spark the kindling of accumulated curiosity by posing relevant historical questions and providing historically informed answers. --- Support this podcast: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/out-of-the-blank-podcast/support

When Berry Gordy's Motown Record Corporation began, the first group signed was The Miracles, also known as Smokey Robinson and the Miracles from 1965 to 1972. The group was also the first of Motown's million-selling recording artists, and the first Motown act to appear on American Bandstand. The group would have a nineteen-year run on the American music charts, with over fifty hits, sixteen within the top 20 of the Billboard Hot 100. Smokey Robinson led the group from its start in 1955 as “The Five Chimes” until he retired from the group in 1972 to take a larger tole as Motown's vice president. Other members included Robinson's wife Claudette, Ronald White, Marv Tarplin, Pete Moore, and Bobby Rogers. In addition to their chart success, Smokey Robinson and the Miracles would have a profound affect on rock and roll, with many of the Miracles' hits being covered by groups like the Zombies, the Who, the Rolling Stones, the Hollies, and the Beatles.Robinson, whose first name is William, got the name “Smokey” from his uncle. Young William Robinson loved cowboy movies, and his uncle started calling him “Smokey Joe” as a cowboy name. Everyone called him that until he was about 12 years old, at which time he dropped the “Joe” part.Going to a Go-Go is the first Miracles album to use the name “Smokey Robinson and the Miracles.” It is also the only studio album by the group to chart in the top 10 of Billboards 200 albums chart, peaking at number 8. Smokey Robinson produced the album, and wrote or co-wrote all but one of the songs on it. We're sure you will enjoy this blast from the past. Ooo, Baby BabyThe Funk Brothers provide the instrumentals for this pleading song about a man who cheated on his woman and begs forgiveness. It was listed as number 266 on Rolling Stone Magazine's list of “The 500 Greatest Songs of All Time.”Tracks of My TearsThis iconic song is another of “The 500 Greatest Songs of All Time,” coming in at number 50. The song itself is about putting on a good face for others after a breakup. “Baby take a good look at my face, you'll see my smile looks out of place. Yeah, just look closer, it's easy to trace the tracks of my tears.”My Girl Has GoneMarv Tarplin plays a 12-string guitar on this song that tries to put a positive spin on a breakup. “Don't you cry, hold your head up high. Don't give up, give love one more try, ‘cause there’s a right girl for every guy.”Going to a Go-GoThe up-temp dance song was covered by the Rolling Stones on their 1982 album “Still Life.” Miracles member and co-writer Bobby Rogers said that the song was inspired by the success of the “go-go” clubs that were popular throughout the United States in the 1960's. ENTERTAINMENT TRACK:The theme from the television series “Combat!”This drama series started in black and white and switched to color during its run from 1962 to 1967, and focused on a World War II American squad fighting Germans in France. Today, we hear, to begin with, a portion of a recently released documentary about President Gerald R. Ford. The documentary premiered on National Geographic. The portion we are about to hear was presented to a packed audience at the Hauenstein Center on October 3, 2017, as part of the Center’s Character and the Presidency Series. A sponsor of that series is also a producer of the Ford documentary: he’s former ambassador to Italy Peter Secchia. Secchia and President Ford were friends. Following the screening, Secchia gave brief remarks about President Ford’s character; he says he’s always thought that Ford’s presidency should be taken a bit more seriously by historians, and that Ford’s decision to pardon Nixon was a testament, in fact, to his character. That’s the view explored in the documentary. After Secchia’s address, we hear from David Brooks, who needs no introduction—everyone’s familiar with his widely read column in the New York Times as well as his bestselling book The Road to Character. Brooks talks with presidential historian Ronald White about character and the presidency generally. They ask what qualities a good leader, a good president, should have. Their discussion is moderated by Gleaves Whitney, director of the Hauenstein Center.

TAH.org's first Documents in Detail webinar aired on Wednesday, 25 January 2017, focusing on Abraham Lincoln's Second Inaugural Address. Professors John Moser, Eric Sands, and Joe Fornieri discussed a number of perspectives on the document, from the prominence of Biblical language throughout, to the political impact of and reaction to the address. The scholars also discussed a counter-factual question regarding how Lincoln might have navigated the minefield of Reconstruction differently - and perhaps more successfully - than his successor, Andrew Johnson. Suggested further reading is Lincoln's Greatest Speech: The Second Inaugural, by Ronald White. Access the full archive of the program, and related documents, here. Access our podcast here. Note: there is a slight echo on one scholar's voice at about the 34-minute mark, which lasts for about 20 seconds. It is the only place where this audio issue came up during the program. The post Documents in Detail: Lincoln’s Second Inaugural appeared first on Teaching American History.
