It's those American rugby knuckleheads, here to entertain you, possibly better than some matches. On this episode, we look back at the final weekend of Rugby World Cup 2023 and all that unfolded. We also pick out XV of the tournament, some names will shock you, others, less so. We also have a look back at round 3 of the Premiership and ask, where the hell has this team been for a certain team in black? Over the past 6 weeks, we've been watching the games and keeping a temperature on the early part of the 2021 MLR season. On Saturday night, Bt and Tommy NoPiks sat down to take in 3 games at once (4 games if you count the 2nd half of the Cali Cup). Much to the chagrin of our dear friend (the 2020 "Blogger of the Year" RPA winner) and seasoned rugby reporter Bryan Ray, the MLR decided to load up Saturday night's slate of games. While Bryan prefers the game schedule to be laid out over the course of an entire weekend, we strongly disagree... What could be better than 3 games on, all at once?! We saw a great opportunity to binge some games and thanks to a generous TV donation by The Rugby Network, we built a triple screen masterpiece. Final Scores and thoughts from a great Saturday night MLR binge (winners in bold): LA Giltinis - 26 SD Legion - 13 Commentary Booth: Gareth Rees (play by play) Mike Tolkin (color) A poorly timed yellow card in the 60th minute killed San Diego's chances to level the score. They just couldn't seem to get the ball over the try line despite many appearances down in LA's 22. Luke White continues his rampage as one of the best scrummaging props in the MLR. Billy Meakes (better known as "Sir William Meakes" in Rugby PickEm circles) was MOTM. Meakes in an absolute GUN! Austin Gilgronis - 17 New England FreeJacks - 25 Commentary Booth: Kit McConico (play by play) Jim ___? (color) Some people disagreed with the call that went against Mason Pederson and cancelled Austin's late try to bring the game close, but the bottom line is that New England scored and defended when they needed to. They walk away with a massive win on the road, and rested some starters too. Zach Bastres scored his first MLR try coming off the bench to help seal the game. NOLA Gold - 17 Rugby New York - 30 Commentary Booth: Ian McNulty (play by play) Geoff Ormsby (color) We we're pulling hard for NOLA to get their 3rd straight win and jump back into contention in the East ... but it wasn't meant to be. New York was in control throughout the majority of the game. Ed Fidow continues to be a master class for the New York backline, running through anything to get his team on the front foot. NOLA has some lengthy tries late in the match, but too little too late for NOLA. They are 0-4 at home to begin the year. Dallas Jackals - 12 Seattle Seawolves - 34 Commentary Booth: Matt McCarthy (play by play) Marc Scterbina (color) An early red card saw Dallas up against it at Choctaw Stadium. The team continues to have moments of play that are magnificent, but a lack of defensive cohesion lead to a litany of Seattle tries that put it out of reach. Dallas will get their first W before the season ends, it's just a matter of which team takes them too lightly. Seattle ends a three game slide and will have to front against the defending champs next weekend. What a fantastic Saturday night of MLR action! Stay tuned for more Rugby PickEm to follow in the coming weeks! PICKEM!
The word "Bayou" derives its origins from Choctaw (bayuk) and Louisiana French. If there's one travel date that is set in stone each year for Rugby PickEm, it's our trip to the Bayou to complete the pilgrimage to one of the great US-based rugby-specific stadiums. This year had to be the Texas Cup. As the RP "Boots on the Ground" 2021 Tour continued in the nation's 4th largest city (population), Sabercat die hard fans Franky Ruggs and Holly Hoops could barely contain their excitement as the group waited for an Uber to Aveva. Frank lives and dies with the ups and downs of being a Houston sports fan, but he loves his teams dearly and one of those teams is his beloved Cats. Hats off to TJ Onyet and the Sabercats front office for making the gameday experience truly memorable. Houston strategically planned this weekend and aligned a USA rugby identification & scouting camp early on in the AM, followed by a multitude of games leading into the Texas Cup to round out the night. Special thanks to Paul Mabry, who in his short interview with Rugby PickEm (if you're reading this, listen to the above audio) mentioned there were teams from Mexico, Kansas City, and just about anywhere in the state of Texas. I know I saw a good amount of Dallas based Regis Jesuit fans in the stands, supporting their head coach Mikey "Bistro" Brown who started at hooker for the Cats. Strategic planning like this is what make a game atmosphere really great. It's hard to just open up your doors and expect people to start pouring in ... you have to work at it, and plan, and follow up with people, and efficiently market your gameday experience ... and you can never stop, because there's always more tickets to be sold. As far as the game went, the first 15 minutes of a 0-0 stalemate was some of the more exciting rugby I've seen. The term "on the edge of your seat" was in full effect, as Franky Ruggs was practically ripping his hair out calling for his beloved Cats to "hold the line!". He did take offense when he laid on eyes the Dallas Jackal mascot (must be trying to make an early splash before the actual team debuts?) .... to quote Frank "This is Houston, not Dallas buddy ...". Maybe the Jackal and Scratch were able to put their differences aside on this day and "get along" for the kids ;) But Austin pulled away in the end, and the Cats just couldn't find the try line. There were fantastic phases of play by both sides, and LaRome White's 20 meter scamper would soon go viral thanks to whatever social media intern runs The Rugby Network's accounts (my guess is it's one of Gilly's people). The Cats can take solace in the fact that their U18 Rugby HTX team defeated the Austin Outlaws U18 team in the curtain raiser. Special thanks to Reggie Harrison for the short interview .... in his words "it was a good shift from the boys". Can't beat the Cat Den for environment. They were rocking all night and the bar was packed to the teeth. Also, an unlimited supply of free tequila (no matter how warm) is always welcome. As you can see by the picture above, they pulled out all of the stops on the marketing front. Skin tight cat suits, full costumed luchadores, and most importantly, great live music. A mariachi band wrapped up the night as Jodie from San Diego managed to sneak into the player food line and gorge on fajitas courtesy of the Cats. It was a truly an experience you can't forget. Regardless of the final score, or how the Cats' first couple of seasons have played out in the league standings .... there's just no beating the Cat Den environment. This franchise will right the ship and before long the wins will be flowing like the Veneno tequila was Saturday night. The Texas Cup stays in Austin until next year. PICKEM!
There's no shortage of Major League Rugby content these days. Not just on The Rugby Network (which we have sincerely and thoroughly enjoyed each week since the season started), but all over the Rugby Media Industrial Complex (RMIC). This week's media review has to be ... The Rugby Clubhouse. The rugby world could not have been blessed with better complimenting accents for this show set in a rugby pub (via the internet ... but it still looks like a sweet set and after a while it just feels like you're having out with Fodes and Mikey). Commish was a guest for The Rugby Clubhouse. He has been making the rounds and I love it. A couple things I learned ...., he's definitely on the same page with Rugby PickEm's #operation2031 and he knows that a confirmed hosting of the 2031 RWC would shoot this league into the stratosphere. He also acknowledged that the league has to generate more revenue in order to increase the teams' salary caps. That's done by maximizing your traditional gameday revenue (asses in seats, merch flying of the shelf, and providing real exposure for your long term sponsors). Provide value. To the die hard fan, to the average fan, to the sponsor partners, to the league as a whole. That should be the front office goals around the league. He is also pushing the teams to have the players last names on the back of the jersey. I'm all for anything that helps engage the average American sporting fan, but the rugby traditionalist (apparently Tommy No Piks is one of them) will roll in their graves when they see something that's different and straying from the norm. But why pass up easy opportunities to boost revenues. We gotta turn these quirky international footy stars (aka the Giltinis roster) into mega stars over here in the states ... where sports fanaticism has no bounds. "To A Man" (a Killebrew classic line), he is a phenomenal commissioner, and we're happy that he's steering the helm of the League. After all, you only get one shot at launching a pro rugby league .... (Sorry Dougie, but we can never forget). Every time I hear Commish talk, I learn something new and insightful. We are fully behind our Commish and hope he continues his media tour pretty much forever. Some other great MLR podcasts that I'd currently recommend are Road to Glory and W Nation. PICKEM!
After a wild opening weekend Dan and Pete sit down to discuss the Opening Weekend of Major League Rugby. The weekend defied expectations of putting on a spectacle for Rugby in North America as well as delivering four Rugby matches into the homes of the North American Rugby fans via The Rugby Network. Danny Tusitala was selected as Player of the Week after his performance for Old Glory DC v. the NOLA Gold. With electric, heads up play, he scored twelve points for his side. Tusitala, talks about the difficult preparation Old Glory had heading into their match against NOLA as well his time with Otago in the fall of 2020. Of course we cover the action from the 6 Nations including what happened in Rome, at Twickenham and at Murrayfield.
