Based on detailed guest surveys and market research, the company has developed a new concept for its cruises to meet the changing needs of its guests.More than 200 improvements – large and small – will ensure that A-ROSA, currently a premium operator, becomes a ‘PremiumPLUS' operator from the 2023 season onwards. Taking into account the entire customer journey – before, during and after travel – the company will focus on making its cruises more customizable, as well as providing even better service, improving its culinary offering, becoming more family-friendly and developing its well-being portfolio. A-ROSA also plans to place greater importance on sustainability and on offering authentic experiences at its destinations.Authentic, personalised experiences in the cruise regionsAnother new area of focus for A-ROSA's city breaks by ship is helping guests experience the different destinations in an authentic way. They'll have the opportunity to get to know chefs, artists and local people from the various regions. A-ROSA will also introduce Destination Scouts. This innovative idea involves locals advising guests visiting their hometown on how to get the most out of their trip. “We'll be looking for people from the cities we call at who can give our guests insider tips about the best places to eat or shop and the best current exhibitions, concerts and events,” explained Eichler. “This will give our guests a really in-depth experience of the region and provide insight into local life beyond the tourist areas.”When it comes to excursions, there will also be a focus on personalised experiences. With 500 different excursions available, there will be something for everyone. Guests who book excursions in the new ‘exclusive tours' category will enjoy individual tours with a vehicle and driver plus their own tour guide. One particular highlight is the half-day excursion with dinner, which will be included in the cruise price from 2023 and guarantees guests an unforgettable evening.More entertainment and relaxationA-ROSA's onboard entertainment programme is set to provide even more value from 2023. Cruises with a duration of five nights or more will include an evening concert, while cruises lasting seven nights or more will feature two. Cruises of nine nights or longer will also have a subject-matter expert on board to give lectures about the destinations. The musical artists will either come from or be influenced by the cruise regions. Through their music – whether traditional songs or global hits – they'll convey the artistic flair of their homeland to the guests.A-ROSA is also responding to its guests' desire for more relaxation and well-being by widening the range of activities available. The SPA-ROSA will provide new treatments and massages, while yoga and fitness classes will be added to the onboard programme. As well as going on guided bike tours, guests will also be able to borrow e-bikes and explore destinations on their own. What's more, as the industry's only provider of family cruises, A-ROSA will also be extending its offering for children. “As well as running dedicated family cruises during the school holidays, we'll provide a Kids Club with organised activities on almost all our ships if there are more than ten children on board,” explained Eichler.Focusing on sustainability“When we were working on our realignment plan, it quickly became clear that sustainability would play a central role,” said Eichler. “A-ROSA has always been involved in environmental and social actions, but taking responsibility will be a special area of focus for us in the future.” With this in mind, A-ROSA opened its own sustainability department on 1 February 2022. Department head Sandra Wendland introduced herself at the press conference. “We've brought a high-level partner on board – the Fraunhofer Institute for Systems and Innovation Research – and we'll be working together to develop an integrated, long-term sustainability strategy for A-ROSA,” explained Wendland. The plan for the next twelve months is to determine A-ROSA's current sustainability footprint and, on the basis of field analyses and stakeholder surveys, create a clear roadmap to 2030, which will set out indicators, actions to take and targets. “We'll be presenting the entire development and implementation process in a transparent way, and the roadmap will be unveiled at the start of the 2023 season,” concluded Wendland.Viking Mississippi Floats Viking® celebrated the new 386-guest Viking Mississippi® was “floated out” in Louisiana, marking a major construction milestone and the first time the ship has touched water. Agulhas II, owned by the Department of Forestry, Fisheries and Environment and under Master, Capt. Knowledge Bengu, using Saab's Sabertooth hybrid underwater search vehicles. We're back with an infamous book written in part by Armin Shimerman about how he had wished DS9 had addressed the way people treat the Ferengi in Star Trek. Absolutely a thing someone should have done. Does this book manage to tackle it with courage and conviction? Well, yeah. Mostly. Does it manage to stick talking about the racism inherent in Star Trek in a way that's considered? Weeeeeellllll, that's a complicated question. One we get into! SPOILERS for some of Voyager's world state, Picard's premise, and DS9 broadly If you would like to get exclusive podcasts please visit patreon.com/abnormalmapping to support us and find out how!Send any questions or comments about this or any other Trek-related thing to abnormalmappingpodcast@gmail.com, and we'll read them on air!The BookThe 34th Rule
Charles Lightoller was the Second Officer on board the ill-fated maiden voyage of the H.M.S. Titanic. Only saved by an exploding boiler, he went on to a notable life and may have been responsible for saving hundreds of lives during the World War II evacuation of Dunkirk. In this episode, we talk about the Titanic, Charles Lightoller and the heroic actions in Dunkirk, France. Then we invite Comedian and Circus Performer Jonathan Burns on to play the quick quiz! Ashkr was raised vegetarian until age seven, when he began eating seafood. He had quite a nomadic upbringing, travelling around Australia while being home schooled, until his family decided to call Melbourne home at age 10. Ashkr always loved cooking and undertook a chef apprenticeship during year 11 and 12 VCAL. During this time, he organised a food stall at a local school and raised money for Sea Shepherd. He became so passionate about Sea Shepherd's work, that he joined their Onshore Crew and assisted every weekend during year 12. After completing high school, Ashkr applied to become a Deck Hand and very quickly learnt about Sea Shepherd's operation. Ashkr was invited to go on his first campaign "Operation Ice Fish" aimed at disrupting illegal fishing operations in the Antarctic. Ashkr was part of a team who removed 72km of gill nets over three weeks and was later involved in the rescue of over 40 crew members from an illegal fishing vessel Thunder. Ashkr has been involved in more than five Sea Shepherd campaigns, starting as an Onshore Crew member, moving to a Deck Hand, Cook, Quartermaster, Third Officer and Second Officer. He later went on to complete commercial qualifications, which allows him to gain employment in the maritime industry. In this episode, Ashkr shares his passion for marine conservation, his experiences on Sea Shepherd expeditions, his personal development journey and developing support networks for young men.Ashkr's Instagram https://www.instagram.com/ashkraudet/Ashkr's Facebook https://www.facebook.com/ashkr.audetSea Shepherd https://www.seashepherdglobal.org/Sam Simon Retrieves Illegal Gill Net Abandoned by Poachers https://youtu.be/_ZWp1exeKdoThunder: A Poaching Vessel Goes Down https://youtu.be/M3dRSE4j8zQOcean Warriors - Chasing The Thunder Trailer https://www.vulcanproductions.com/our-work/ocean-warriorsOcean Warrior - Chasing The Thunder Download https://www.waterbear.com/Operation Nemesis https://youtu.be/3MQdqoQcMpc

Nobody can say when the intrepid Trek fans returned to history, but that is really the question we’ve come to discuss. Who has constructed this history, and for what purposes? A second person arrested in connection to the fatal shooting of a police officer in west Auckland is due to appear in court today. Constable Matthew Hunt, 28, was killed during a routine traffic stop on Friday morning. RNZ understands the other police officer that was shot in the incident on Friday was shot at more than a dozen times. According to sources, Matthew Hunt was in the front passenger seat of the police car and the second officer was driving. They had attempted to pull over a vehicle which didn't stop straight away but eventually pulled alongside and opened fire almost immediately. Assistant Police Commissioner Richard Chambers says they aren't looking for anyone else in relation to the shooting. Reporter Mackenzie Smith is in the area.
We’re back after a long hiatus to … enjoy the worst Star Trek movie ever made! Join us as we take the trek into darkness and come out the other side confused as to why you’d even build a warp core like that, why Khan is even a bad guy in this universe, and what anyone’s motivation actually is. Also, we talk about the trailers for both Discovery season 3 and Picard! Thank you everyone who has ever said you enjoyed this show. We will always be out there, ready to return when the time is right. The MovieStar Trek Into Darkness
Star Trek Discovery is finished (for now), and so are we (for now). Of all the souls we have met in our journeys, this was the most television.
In the penultimate episode of Discovery season 2, Tilly’s girlfriend returns, everyone gets a goodbye, everyone gets another goodbye, and nothing really happens. Sorry for a downer one, it will be over soon. The article about the design of the Enterprise Em mentions: Design Secrets of Discovery’s New USS Enterprise Bridge
We’re so very, very tired in this, the prepenultimate episode of Discovery season 2. Live long and prosper.
Finally Discovery rights itself and we have what we both consider to just be a good episode of Star Trek. Given that it involves forgetting major character motivations and making one of the characters a literal terminator, are we perhaps just forced to lower our standards? Or is it true that the only thing that we like more than good Trek is bad Trek? Time will tell as we have until the 32nd century to find the answer in this, the latest Discovery episode.
The Discovery solves several mysteries as another giant one opens before them in this episode that splits us in two on what exactly we want or are willing to accept from modern Star Trek. One thing’s for sure, Georgiou would NEVER sleep with Stammets in any universe. The intensity of nonsense ramps up … now!
Wasted potential and piss poor writing does not a good episode make, but we do our best to talk through exactly why this episode of Discovery set a new low for this show. Sorry for the downer one, folks, hopefully next week picks back up!
We’re back to the very beginning as Spock and Burnham go to Talos IV, Christopher Pike actually gets a character arc 50 years later, and Saru reveals that he might never actually be fit for command now that he’s evolved. All this and more as we come into the back half of season 2 and try hard not to just talk about Enterprise again.
We finally spend most of the episode talking about the actual episode of Star Trek, which means Sarek must be involved! But don’t worry, we get a little bit of time to yell about Enterprise, as is our wont. Also, a shocking revelation about the mirror universe that changes everything forever.
The only thing better than good Star Trek is bad Star Trek.- Gene Roddenberry, 1961
Light spoilers for a bunch of DS9 and Enterprise in this episode. What happens when Discovery has its most dramatic story yet? We find time to talk about everything but the actual events of this episode. Combadges, tachyon particles, hair choices, prime Lorca, and many other things besides dominate this especially tangential episode. Don’t worry, everything is saved with a kiss. It’s good, actually.
Saru gets sick, Number One gets a burg, and Stamets gets high af in our fourth episode of Discovery season 2! We cover the ups and downs of this episode, and finally get around to disagreeing on Discovery for maybe the first time? Please enjoy the adventure with us!
It’s time for the Klingons! What does it mean for Star Trek to be bad when there’s so much interesting stuff to talk about? We find out in this amazing mess of an episode!
Discovery gets down and dirty with discussions of religion and the prime dir-oh, excuse me, General Order One, as we delve into the true joys of episodic Star Trek television. This episode isn’t our longest, but it might be our happiest. Please come along with us to the stars, to a new earth, and to the surprising reveal of the ghost parade.
Discovery is back, and so are we! With the Enterprise out of commission, King Cop himself Christopher Pike is here to usher in a new era of fun space adventure. Does he succeed? Well, it’s only the pilot, but so far we’ve definitely ruffled a few feathers. Please enjoy the return of our weekly Discovery recaps!
Short Treks are back! This is the week Discovery season 2 starts! The train never stops and we’re climbing on and not letting go. Tholians, imperialism, racial dynamics of the Federation and more define what might be the best Discovery book yet! Ready For Takeoff - Turn Your Aviation Passion Into A Career
I first attended the 23-acre United Airlines Flight Training Center in 1978. At the time, it was still a fairly-new facility, with the initial four buildings constructed in 1968. After completing my Initial Flight Officer training, I was invited to remain on campus as a B-727 instructor for a year before assuming my duties as a B-727 Second Officer (flight engineer) in San Francisco. Throughout my employment at United, I spent half my career - 13 years out of 26 - as an instructor at the Training Center. I saw numerous changes, including the closure of nearby Stapleton airport and the construction of the "new" F building, which housed additional offices and simulators. After retirement, I occasionally returned to the Training Center to administer simulator training as a private consultant for other companies. The last time I was there for work was about three years ago. I have to admit, the building was starting to look a bit long in the tooth. Last week I attended a New Pilot Expo at the United Flight Training Center, for the Metropolitan State University of Denver Aviation Department, where I teach. From the outside, the campus looks pretty much the same, except for some construction on the south side. Once I entered, I was blown away. Captain Mike McCasky, the Managing Director at United, made an impressive presentation, and every attendee was inspired to become a pilot with United. At the end of the presentations, we all received a tour, and were given the opportunity to see the simulators, flight training devices, and classrooms. The entire facility has been renovated, and it looks awesome! I recognized the hallways, but was completely lost among the new offices and state-of-the-art classrooms. There are currently 31 full flight simulators and 10 flight training devices in operation. Another 8 simulators and 4 flight training devices are planned. When the additional construction is complete, the Flight Training Center will be the largest airline training facility in the world. United will be conducting sixty thousand training events this year, and will use over one hundred thousand hotel rooms for trainees. In addition to pilot training, United conducts pilot interviews, flight attendant recurrent training, and Tech Ops training at the facility.
The Dominion War is over, but the rhythms of war will never be purged from the Klingon heart! Join us as we return to the decade of Klingon politics as we watch the rise of Gowron, the challenge of the Duras, and the arrival of Martok onto the stage of history. Bat’leth will bleed as we toast to all those who cross Worf and find themselves in Sto-Vo-Kor for their troubles. Join us in a song for the ages, a song of the alien culture that refuses to ever play nice with the rest of Star Trek. We take a break from Star Trek for a duo of media inspired by Trek and taking it on as a sort of meta-parody with one of the best Star Trek movies and a well-regarded Trek-adjacent book! Ready For Takeoff - Turn Your Aviation Passion Into A Career
Emilio Corsetti took a flight in an airplane as a teenager, and he was hooked! He started taking flying lessons, and received his Private Pilot license before his driver's license. He paid his dues at numerous flying jobs after becoming a CFI, and flew night check deliveries for four years before getting hired as an airline pilot. During his journey, Emilio was unemployed a total of ten years as he moved from one company to the next, experiencing terminations and furloughs numerous times. His major airline flying, at TWA, started out in the Second Officer (flight engineer) position on the 727. While a new-hire at TWA, he became fascinated by the story of the first turbojet airliner to ditch in open water. During his furlough he researched the event, interviewing crew members, survivors, rescuers, and air traffic controllers, as well as researching NTSB records. The resulting book, 35 Miles From Shore, was an immediate success. His next book, Scapegoat, chronicles the 10-year battle of a b727 crew to clear their names.
There's a mistake in the timeline! We ditch our book and episodes for a month due to scheduling and instead turn our eyes to a little, forgotten corner of Star Trek lore. Once upon a time, a man named J J Abrams was given the keys to make a new vision of Star Trek. What we got wasn't exactly fresh, nor was it particilarly visionary, which means we get to enjoy tearing it apart! James Kirk is dead. Once, on the Enterprise-B, sacrificing himself to save a ship of strangers. Twice, on Veridian III, giving his life to save a planet of unknown aliens. And now? Well ... there are always possibilities, especially when the actor playing you is both wildly infamously egotistical and knows how to write books. Thus, The Return, William Shatner's second foray into writing the further adventures of James T Kirk. Because why would Kirk ever let a little thing like dying twice stop him? It didn't stop Spock to die, did it?We are, as always, a Patreon supported show. The finale of Discovery is here! We talk about the very final episode of Star Trek's return to television (on the internet), and after a season of ups and downs it all comes down to one question: will they stick the landing?Yes. Yes they absolutely do. Spoilers.
The USS Discovery is back in the Prime universe, and the war has gone very badly. What beacon of hope can we turn to in these moments of peril? Surely not the leader of the evil space fascists. That wouldn't make sense. No sir. But here, in the penultimate episode, all sorts of bullshit will go down as we scream into the ending of this, the first season of Star Trek in over a decade.
It's a bit of a down week here in Second Officer Slog but we're still bringing Star Trek Discovery takes to the people. Last time, we were wrong about literally everything that it is possible to be wrong about, and this time the possibility space closes up and we watch everyone punch each other.
The Mirror Universe spins off in complicated directions as we ponder the possibilities of existence and Em tries very hard to not say that Kelpians probably taste delicious. A lot happens as we begin to head to the end of this season!
Second Officer Slog makes a glorious return as we begin the epic journey that is The Shatnerverse. In this month's book we deal with Kirk's Horny Middle Aged Crisis and greatly relish in the thinly veiled metaphor it all is for the difficulty of being William Shatner. It's a really good podcast and it's spoiler free for DS9 and most important Star Trek so if you've been cautious about listening there has literally never been a better time to jump in!This Month's BookThe Ashes of Eden by William Shatner, Judith & Garfield Reeves-StevensNext Month's BookThe Return by William Shatner, Judith & Garfield Reeves-StevensThis Month's EpisodesTOS S1E3 - "Mudd's Women"TOS S1E19 - "Arena"Next Month's EpisodesTOS S1E26 - "The Devil in The Dark"TOS S2E05 - "Amok Time"
In this week's Discovery, everything happens at once, and in this raucous episode of SOS, we stumble upon some of the most troubling deep lore possibilities yet. Here's the IGN article we talked about this week!
It is a turbulent time for Abnormal Mapping, but we just had to talk about the latest Star Trek: Discovery. It's a fucking stealth sequel to an episode of Enterprise, it could not possibly be more atop its bullshit if it tried, come on in and enjoy the return of everyone's favourite show. Here's the buzzfeed article that we referenced in this episode. And here's the GoFundMe if you want to help out Em's situation.
Second Officer Slog, December 2017, we're here at the very beginning of Star Trek to talk about both the pilot that started it all and the latest book about the very latest Trek. Vulcan nonsense, the aesthetics of the pre-Kirk Enterprise, and the politics of the Federation in the 23rd Century take the stage in this big episode about just how much we enjoy what Discovery has done to change the tenor of the original series as an idea. Please, join us for this very good ride as Captain Pike and Captain Georgiou square off! Here's the clip from Patrick Stewart on Extras, mentioned in this episode. To support our shows, suggest topics, and vote on games, please check out our Patreon. We're here at the end of all things, where the Pahvans misstepped and made a terrible mistake, where the Discovery makes a daring gambit to take the next step forward, and we all boldly go for one last time in 2017 as the first half of the season comes to a dramatic conclusion. Join us for "Into the Forest I Go", and thoughts from listeners on what they've enjoyed from Discovery so far.Support this and all the other Abnormal Mapping shows on patreon.com/abnormalmapping!
Hello friends, and welcome back to our continuing Discovery coverage. Today we talk about "Si Vis Pacem, Para Bellum," the penultimate episode of the fall half of this season. The table is set and Saru gets owned as we wonder about Cornwell and talk about how nice it is to have Trek book sensibilities on a show like this. Please support us on patreon.com/abnormalmapping if you can!
Discovery barrels through the first half of the season but we still have books to read, and this week we complete our journey through the Mission Gamma series! It is one of the most wild books we have read in sheer terms of holy shit moments per page, and specifically tuned to the stuff we love about Trek. It is a very, very good time. This episode was brought to you by our patrons. To support our shows, suggest topics, and vote on shows, please check out our Patreon. Hello everyone! Welcome back to our Discovery recaps! We're here to talk about episode 7, "Magic to Make the Sanest Man Go Mad", and deviate into our thoughts on Tilly, Mudd in DIS versus ToS, our hopes for the show, and the Ash Tyler problem. It's a good show, even if we're very punchy from recording our Book Club right before (which will be up next week). Please support us on patreon.com/abnormalmapping if you can!Jackson's preferred Discovery Recap they shout out can be found here.
We go on for ages about this week's Discovery, which is the most deep lore nonsense for episode six of a brand new star trek show! Sarek's Brain! Lorca's Scars! Klingon Spies! It's all kicking off, and we're just along for the ride.
We're back for another journey down Discovery lane, as we reach a conclusion to the Tardigrade saga, open a door into possibilities dark and mysterious, and contemplate a real speed bump in the timeline of the show we've been presented with so far. Please enjoy this talk of Discover episode 5, "Choose Your Pain"
In which the ship spins, twists, and goes where no man has gone before—Corvan II! No really, this episode involves Tardigrade friendship, Klingon uneasiness, and all the Tilly/Burnham shipping you can shake a stick at. Please enjoy this recap of Episode 4, "The Butcher's Knife Cares not for the Lamb's Cry"! See y'all next week.
As Discovery brings Star Trek back to our screens, we have not neglected the regular monthly episodes! This time we continue with our journey through the Deep Space Nine relaunch, and after last week's disappointing entry we're back to much more enjoyable Star Trek. Discovery returns, The Discovery appears, and we're here to talk about both. Our journey through weekly Trek episodes continues with our discussion of episode 3 "Context is for Kings".Thanks everyone, and see you next week for Discovery episode 4 and a normal book-focused SOS episode.
Discovery is here! We're going to bring you our takes every week the show is going, and that starts now. You don't have to be watching Discovery to enjoy these takes, but we are going full spoiler with the show so don't listen if you intend to get around to it and care about that sort of thing. These episodes are going to be much more informal so expect a goofier, more earnest, messier time. It begins here, with the two part pilot! "The Vulcan Hello" and "Battle of the Binary Stars" are today's episodes!
After the best Star Trek book we have yet read, today we are tragically brought here to tackle one of the worst. But luckily, this is Second Officer Slog, and we have read it so you don't have to! It leads to a very rowdy and fun discussion of the myriad ways that Bad Star Trek manifests throughout the series, and the ways we react to them individually and combined. In addition, we watch two episodes of The Original Series and have a fantastic, fantastic time. This episode was brought to you by our patrons. Welcome to the first in our irregular series of episodes focused around Star Trek comics! No episodes this time, it's a much shorter and looser affair, as we take you through on a journey of a random Star Trek comic we picked off the digital shelf. This time, we are reading Perchance to Dream, a comic from 2000 set on the Enterprise-D between the events of All Good Things and Generations. It is extremely, extremely bad, and we had a great time experiencing the trainwreck. It's the much delayed maiden voyage of the latest and not-so-greatest ship of the fleet as M and Jackson launch Second Officer Slog. This book club podcast attempts to be a window into Star Trek's expanded universe through laughter and explaining just what the hell happens when the cameras stop rolling on DS9 and a bunch of authors descend on the remains of the show. Thus we begin with the DS9 relaunch in book form, discussing prophecy, Bajor, and the mechanics of space flight. Listen NowOver the past few years the lines between health care payers and health care providers have been blurring. Some say these health care industry silos, insurance companies and acute and post-acute providers, will eventually merge. For cost purposes, health care plans are ever-increasingly interested in improving their relationship with patients in order to provide more efficient and effective care. Health care providers want to better control their revenue streams and be more competitive. CareConnect, formed last year by North Shore-Long Island Jewish Health System, is New York State's first provider-owned commercial health insurance plan. During this 21-minute interview Mr. Alan Murray discusses the reasons CareConnect was formed, how it's structured, its patient population, how its physicians deliver care within the CareConnect network and what it is doing to improve its patient and service community's population health. Mr. Alan Murray is the Co-Founder, President and Chief Executive Officer of North Shore-LIJ CareConnect, the first provider owned health plan in New York State. Mr. Murray is also currently President and CEO of North Shore-LIJ Health Plan whose offerings include a managed long-term care plan for Medicaid recipients. Previously, Mr. Murray was VP of Managed Care for North Shore-LIJ Health System. Mr. Murray also served for five years as a Vice President for UnitedHealthcare in New York and previously still as at WellPoint/Empire BlueCross BlueShield). Mr. Murray's background also includes serving for over five years as a Second Officer in the British Merchant Navy. For more on CareConnect see: http://www.nslijcareconnect.com/ This is a public episode.
