“Counseling helped me befriend my nervous system.” - Brooke Seiz Did you know we only need one teaspoon of sugar in our body at a time? During today's episode, Dr. Robin invites Brooke Seiz to unpack why sugar can oftentimes be a culprit for anxiety. Brooke shares what inspired her to become a counselor and functional medicine practitioner for others, including her own bout with anxiety, an eating disorder, and other mental health challenges. She goes on to describe why there can often be many root causes of anxiety, but when our blood sugar levels are too high or low, our cortisol levels (stress response) get activated and we easily enter that fight or flight mode. Brooke also covers how sugar is often disguised on labels, and how fast our bodies can experience inflammation (even pain) after we consume too much sugar. By the end of the episode, she'll provide some ways you can test if sugar may be causing problems. She'll also provide what foods can help aid in regulating sugar levels. "Life is really simple but we insist on making it complicated." - Confucius In this episode of the Small Changes Big Shifts podcast, we are joined by board-certified psychiatrist, acupuncturist and yoga teacher, Dr. Ellen Vora who has also authored the chapter on Complementary and Alternative Medicine in Psychiatry in the textbook Mount Sinai Expert Guides: Psychiatry. Dr. Vora takes a functional medicine approach to mental health, considering the whole person and addressing the problem at the root, rather than reflexively prescribing medication to suppress symptoms. She also takes the whole person into consideration, focusing on everything from physical health, sleep, nutrition, digestion, thought patterns, relationships and community to our connection with nature and creativity, and the ways we find meaning in life. Ash she sits down with Dr. Michelle, we learn what drew Dr. Vora to learn more about holistic approach and other trainings to heal the human body such as Chinese medicine, movement, nutrition, and acupuncture. By 2003 she had transitioned to secondary progressive multiple sclerosis. In December 2007, she began the Wahls Protocol™. Ron is the author of “SAME KIND OF DIFFERENT AS ME.” Now turned into a movie, it is the story of an international art dealer Ron Hall (Greg Kinnear) who must befriend a dangerous homeless man (Djimon Hounsou) in order to save his struggling marriage to his wife (Renée Zellweger), a woman whose dreams will lead all three of them on the most remarkable journey of their lives. Jon Voight plays Hall's father, with whom he reconciles thanks to the revelations of his new life. Ron Hall's life was centered around a successful career as an international art dealer and a passion for his Rocky Top ranch on the Brazos River. All this changed in 1998 as a result of an encounter with a homeless man who was threatening to kill everyone in sight in the homeless shelter where Ron and his wife Deborah had begun to volunteer two weeks earlier. This life-changing encounter, featured on many television and radio shows, inspired Ron to write his first book SAME KIND OF DIFFERENT AS ME, a story of hope and redemption. The word-of-mouth hit became a New York Times platinum bestseller and stayed on the list for more than three and one-half years. In 2007, President Bush appointed Ron to the State Department Cultural Property Committee to advise the President on diplomatic matters regarding international art and antiquities. He served through December 2011. Ron is a screenwriter and producer of the movie version of his book SAME KIND OF DIFFERENT AS ME. I want to share a personal journey with you, one that led me to discover the power of making small yet impactful changes to see big shifts within my anxiety. It all started with a previous small trauma that triggered a snowball effect, leading to panic attacks and anxiety, feeling like I was slowly witnessing a car accident unfold before me. As someone who helps others with self-awareness, I knew what I needed to do, but I had to take the leap and make changes to support this transformation. The first step was asking for help, breaking the fear of feeling and diving into somatic practices to regulate my nervous system. Tune in and join me as I explain all the changes that I made through this anxiety-ridden journey and how simple yet impactful changes can help transform your anxious state and bring a new level of healing and energy into your life. “There's something about these kids just getting on the field or court because it's their turn to try.”   - Raegan Shurr Research shows that early intervention for kids with autism spectrum disorder can significantly improve their quality of life as they grow older. In today's episode, Dr. Michelle Robin invites Raegan Schurr to share how the YMCA of Greater Kansas City has built something called the Challenger Program that helps these kids fulfill some of those critical early intervention needs through sports and teamwork. Raegan explains why they have cultivated an environment that helps parents let their guard down and watch their kids explore and grow by learning about patience, why it's important to show up on time, how to be a good teammate, and so much more. With over 300 volunteers across Kansas City who are giving their time to impact these kids' lives, the Challenger Program has multiple benefits for early intervention learning opportunities. While kids may be different from one another, parents are still able to speak the same language and navigate similar things happening in their lives. However, raising a child with autism spectrum disorder or other special needs can be a different experience for a parent – one that comes with a realization that you aren't speaking the same language as everybody else. These parents say isolation can be the hardest part of the journey. In today's episode, Dr. Michelle Robin invites Diana Toman to tell her story about raising her son who is on the spectrum, graduating high school, and soon entering college. “Counseling helped me befriend my nervous system.” - Brooke Seiz Did you know we only need one teaspoon of sugar in our body at a time? During today's episode, Dr. Robin invites Brooke Seiz to unpack why sugar can oftentimes be a culprit for anxiety. Brooke shares what inspired her to become a counselor and functional medicine practitioner for others, including her own bout with anxiety, an eating disorder, and other mental health challenges. She goes on to describe why there can often be many root causes of anxiety, but when our blood sugar levels are too high or low, our cortisol levels (stress response) get activated and we easily enter that fight or flight mode. Brooke also covers how sugar is often disguised on labels, and how fast our bodies can experience inflammation (even pain) after we consume too much sugar. By the end of the episode, she'll provide some ways you can test if sugar may be causing problems. She'll also provide what foods can help aid in regulating sugar levels. If I were to distil what makes a holistic approach to healthcare successful or not, it would come down to habits. The most perfect treatment plan means nothing if there is no system or structure in which to implement and ground it into the routines of our daily life. A big part of my practice as a naturopath has been to work out the best ways to help folks (and myself) develop habits that support health and to reduce habits that harm our health. Tiny positive shifts and 1% changes really do add in the long term and can catalyse much more significant transformations. I recently read the popular “Atomic Habits” by James Clear, and I was SUPER impressed. James masterfully gathers and distils the science and practice of habit cultivation and behavioural change. He neatly summarises what took me years to figure out plus some. To continue with the theme of mental health this season, I’d love to share some of the key ideas of the book. And share with you some ways you can gently tend to your mental health on the daily and perhaps inspire you to read the book in its entirety.
