In this episode of 'Past Tens: A Top 10 Time Machine,' hosts Dave and Milt explore the Billboard Top 10 hits from October 1974. They spotlight tracks like Bad Company's 'Can't Get Enough,' Elton John's 'The Bitch is Back,' and Stevie Wonder's 'You Haven't Done Nothin'. The episode is peppered with personal stories, plans for Disney World, a shout-out to a devoted listener Tom Carey, and a playful segment on songs named after days of the week. The hosts provide interesting snippets about artists like Cat Stevens and Cheech and Chong, and offer a comedic take on the quirky 70s TV variety show moments. They also critique the era's music, including Olivia Newton-John's soulless bowl of crap 'I Honestly Love You' and Billy Preston's awesome 'Nothing from Nothing,' while reminiscing about variety show misfires like the Star Wars Christmas Special.Topics01:19 Disney World Excitement02:46 Shoutouts and Listener Appreciation06:16 Time Machine: October 12th, 197425:14 Cheech and Chong's Top 10 Hit38:11 Nostalgic Podcast Ideas39:13 Elton John's Iconic Hits39:46 The Bitch is Back: Lyrics and Legacy41:37 Controversial Lyrics and Radio Censorship42:20 Songs with 'Bitch' in the Title50:30 Cat Stevens: From Pop Star to Yusuf Islam57:43 Songs with Days of the Week Quiz01:05:09 Stevie Wonder's Political Anthem01:09:42 Cringeworthy 70s Variety Shows01:14:04 The Beach Boys and First Class01:18:14 The Knickerbockers and Beatles Knockoffs01:19:59 Dionne Warwick's Comeback with The Spinners01:28:05 Billy Preston: The Fifth Beatle01:33:29 Olivia Newton-John's Chart-Topping Hit01:39:01 Recap and Reflections
It's the Baker's Dozen for Breakdown The Universe, and we discuss... nothing overly important, but this episode is a little bit special. On top of being our thirteenth episode, this is our six month anniversary of doing the podcast (insert celebration noises here). Outside of discussing May the Fourth, The Star Wars Christmas Special, live action Disney, and how much it costs to make your own lightsaber, Blaze introduces a new game; who would win between all of the franchises we have discussed? The answers may (or may not) shock you.
This week the Regular Joes check out the recent documentary A Disturbance in The Force (available on disc or stream) which provides the best explanation to date on how and why the 1978 Star Wars Christmas Special came to be. As part of their rigorous preparation the Joes also dug up and watched the first episode of season three of the Donnie and Marie show from 1977, which included a Star Wars skit. This provided much needed context and forced Tod to come clean on his childhood Marie Osmond crush. If all of this does not seem compelling there's also a lengthy discussion about Dave's sports apparel peccadillos. Barry, heavily medicated, did not admit anything embarrassing. At this point it's traditional to note, there's also Random Topics, but the randomness of the aforementioned content makes this seem somehow redundant. Thanks for listening … and happy Life Day!

We get back to covering actual Worst Picture Winners with 1998's An Alan Smithee Film: Burn, Hollywood, Burn, winner at the 19th Annual Golden Raspberry Awards! You can tell how excited we were to talk about this one by how long we talk about whether Batman's a fascist in the opening. We break down what did and didn't work about the movie, marvel at how anyone could possible cast Harvey Weinstein in an on-screen role, dig into what went wrong with this film's bizarre soundtrack, lambast Joe Esterhaz's lazy writing while defending his Wookiee-like appearance, and try to grasp how a movie like this can be so bad that the director took an Alan Smithee credit himself unironically. We come up with film aliases for ourselves, Jack recounts a bathroom crime, and Joe struggles and fails to remember the title of Comedy Central's single-season adult animated series Kid Notorious about producer Robert Evans. A long time ago... from a great 70's movie franchise called Star Wars, it's creator, George Lucas penned a mysteriously helmeted bounty hunter named Boba Fett as an animated short on the painfully received televised Star Wars Christmas Special. Eventually, this character had made it to the big screen debuting a live action Fett collecting on his bounty by successfully capturing the hero Han Solo thereby bringing a grim conclusion to the original trilogy's second installment, Empire Strikes Back. Following with the sequel, Return of the Jedi, Fett, not really living up to his legend, is immediately vanquished (or so it seemed) by Luke Skywalker during Han's rescue fray. And for decades it had been assumed that Fett had perished, end of story. Nevertheless, there had been non canonical tales of Fett's survival and expansion of his people, the Mandalorians during the years of Star Wars wilderness in comic books. Until Disney acquired Lucasfilm and then years followed leading up to the second season of The Mandalorian (2020) on Disney Plus, where we finally see the return of Boba Fett, portrayed by the franchise's prequel vet, Temuera Morrison who cemented his cinematic status as Boba's dad, Jando and it's clones nearly two decades prior. It was then announced that fans would get an additional series called The Book of Boba Fett leaving fans scratching heads on whether this was something new or a continuation to the widely successful Mandalorian series. On this podcast episode TBC_afp delves and evaluates on how TBOBF faired. So strap in and Slave... err Firespray away. #nodisintergrations #iambobafett

Back in 1978, something truly horrifying happened. Following the worldwide, blockbuster success of the original Star Wars in 1977 (which we now lovingly refer to as A New Hope), audiences waited for what was next. And while The Empire Strikes Back arrived in 1980 and set the world ablaze, there were a few stops along the way, and one of them was almost impossibly ill-advised, in hindsight. The Star Wars Christmas Special aired only one time that holiday season, and it's widely-considered to be the single worst piece of Star Wars anything, ever. (Colin contends it's arguably the worst piece of entertainment ever created.) Not even the original movie's cast and some timely guest stars could save this coke-addled variety show. It's no wonder -- apart from its Boba Fett cartoon -- that it's been completely disowned and disavowed. And yet, we couldn't help ourselves. Enjoy. Learn more about your ad choices. There are several lines that allude to their blindness and growing weakness, but the major one is where Mace Windu states in “Attack of the Clones” that their connection with the force is waning.“Star Wars Episode II - Attack of the Clones - Obi-Wan Kenobi reports to Yoda and Mace” - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dTFWEHW_REs The Verbivore references the 1970s Star Wars Christmas Special. MEP EP#255: Fifth Annual MacroFab Star Wars Christmas Special - Neo JediParker SPACE TRASH in Star Wars Recently ESA commissioned the world’s first space debris removal ClearSpace-1 which will launch in 2025 Would space trash be a concern for the galaxy far far away? I don’t think the Empire cares all too much about space garbage since they just jettison everything before jumping to hyperspace as seen in Empires Strikes Back. If it was merely a case of if space was just big enough that dumping trash didn't matter then this wouldn't be a problem. The universe is “infinite” thus infinite space for GARBAGE! Maybe space trash ends up collecting into large space planets of trash like the floating trash islands on Earth’s oceans. In the legends or non canon StarWars literature you have the Squibs The imperials provided Squib salvage vessels with the locations of Imperial dumpsites so it can be collected Traveling through the planets CORE Boss Nass sends our heroes through the core of Naboo as it is the fastest way to get to the other side of the planet with the Trade Federation on the surface Could there be a water filled tunnel through the core of a planet to facilitate faster travel? Better call Elon and the Boring Company Limit on the depth of a liquid water ocean? Phase change diagram of water Liquid water transforms to solid ice around 92000 psi At a depth of 1200 miles the weight of the water would turn the water into solid ice given the specifications of an Earth size planet. Deepest point on Earth is 6.8 miles so James Cameron has a bit of ways to go Naboo has a radius of 7456 miles so water would pressure solid if Naboo was a “water core” world Stephen Star wars and the matrix are the same universe Perhaps a different version of matrix In the matrix revolutions and the matrix reloaded 6 different versions of the matrix before they landed on 1999 Faster than light travel Fundamental forces different The force is a glitch? Ancient religion - this was a method of understanding People could openly demonstrate their “force” because it had a religious aspect to it. Lucas, Jacob and Tony take a crack at ranking all 9 of the main Star Wars movies. Lucas and Jacob fight over the Star Wars Christmas Special, Jacob gets outnumbered in his rankings, and Tony revels in his victory in last week's Sandwich Fantasy Draft. Also, Lucas challenges a friend of the show to a future trivia episode, which may or may not result in a much needed humbling. PS. Lucas experienced some mic issues throughout recording, so his mic quality was not as good as it could be Follow us on Twitter!: @theitilpod
Disney+ has been up and running for two months now and everything is broken! Well maybe not everything, but if you have a Samsung Smart TV built in 2016 or earlier, UHD or not, forget your ability to use a convenient little app to access your new favorite platform. Sorry my Parliament Pals, the UK won't be able to scope out a single one of the 7,500 titles until March 2020. The Mandalorian is walking away with the title for raddest show of the year, but let's not forget the Imagineering Story featuring the one and the only, Bob Gurr! But with all this, and Forky from Pixar's Toy Story handing down life lessons, Disney Plus couldn't keep the identity thieves away for long. Allegedly, thousands of user accounts were hacked in the early hours of the platform's release. That said, it was a Washington Post article - meaning sources are scarce and writer credentials unclear. All things considered, Bob Iger's Disney+ is leading to more binge-worthy evenings of show watchin' and dare we say, we're not mad at that! The Kingdom Cable covers everything from the new Solar Farm in Orlando on the Disney World property, to the new Disney Store within a store model - view-able at a Target Store near you. Disneyland Cast Members can have bushy beards, flashy performance eye wear and long, daringly dangly earrings! Scar talks about French Fry rock formations in Tomorrowland, his harrowing escape when the Rocket Rods flung him into the foliage below back in the early turn o' the millennium, and the type of weapon he'd use if he were a ghost hunter. Star Wars Fans! Didn't you all love the Star Wars Christmas Special featuring Life Day? No? Very funny, of course you did. Well, some of the production cats involved in that feat of creative majesty helped with Mandalorian - so you know it's good. Baby Yoda can be found chugging soup and having some laughs, all while a guy that looks like Boba Fett risks it all to slay an angry old galactic rhino. It's no Solo, but we'll use it to tie us over in the meantime. The full Simpson's catalog can be found, albeit with a wonky aspect ratio. Coincidence? Maybe, but I believe the padding and polishing chiefs are working those kinks out as we speak to smooth things over with disgruntled fans everywhere. Big fan of puppets? Miss that Jim Henson touch? Fear not, Earth to Ned is a brand-new Disney Plus original, featuring a Muppet-packed talk show. Did that not push you to open a new tab and start your subscription? Ease on over to this little piece for a 3-hour tour of the platform, sure to get you over the fence just like Ross Perot did with his late-night infomercials: https://www.digitaltrends.com/movies/disney-plus-launch-lineup-three-hour-trailer/ - or - want to just see a complete list of Disney+ Titles? Check it: https://www.digitaltrends.com/home-theater/everything-on-disney-plus-when-it-launches/ Ladies and Gentlemen, we've got you covered! Sit back, relax, pause Waking Sleeping Beauty for two seconds, and give the boys a listen! Don't forget to leave a comment - good, bad, or ugly - we'll take em all! Last time, the backlotboys talked about a new Neil deGrasse Tyson attraction coming to Disneyland in California - give it a listen here: https://anchor.fm/backlotboys/episodes/Is-Neil-deGrasse-Tyson-coming-to-Disneyland-e4cs2m
The Drunken Odyssey with John King: A Podcast About the Writing Life
In this week's episode, Tod Caviness, Julian Chambliss, Dianne Turgeon Richardson, and Jared Silvia join me in a roundtable discussion of the Star Wars Christmas Special of 1978 and maybe got a few other topics in there as well.
